GMM 1225.3: Does Your Name Determine What You Look Like?

( music playing ) And we’re back! Mythical beasts, when I say the word “instrument,” what jumps into your head? – Saxophone? – Tambourine? – Didgeridoo. – Well, those are the three most obvious choices, but perhaps it’s time we expand that list because today we ask, is this an instrument? Hm? I’m pretty excited about this because the world is our oyster and there’s lots of– – Okay. – And, and– But an oyster is not an instrument. Well, what better soundtrack to being in an oyster? Or being an oyster. I don’t even know how the oyster thing works. Let’s just forget about that. – Here’s what’s gonna happen. – Yeah, right. We’re gonna be given about something that is typically not thought of as a musical instrument. We do not know what it is, and then we’re going to– through a series of, uh– – Rigorous tests. – Rigorous tests. – Very rigorous. – We are going to determine if it is an instrument for your musical benefit. Okay, so let’s close our eyes and Chase is going to place the instrument in our hands. We don’t know if it’s an instrument. But it is in our hands so eyes are closed, and we’re gonna open ’em. Warning, we’re about to open our eyes. – Stand back. – Three, Both: Two, one. Oh! Okay. It’s, uh, it’s a nose hair trimmer or ear hair trimmer. Oh, nose hair trimmer, okay, so, this is great because I lost the key piece to my nose hair trimmer at home and I’ve really built ’em up. They’re really starting to “forestate.” Well, you can take care of that as part of this process. Now, the first thing I think we should probably do is just see if it makes a note of any kind. Well, it makes a noise. Is it a sing-able note? Are they making the same note? Are they calibrated exactly the same? Yes. ( both humming ) Let’s get the head resonance. ( both humming ) ( coughs ) Ooh. I like it, I like it. You don’t like it? – It tickles so bad. – ( humming ) This is not like mine. I actually do this sometimes with things that I, like– vibrating things that I put around my head. ( coughing ) I’m sorry, that came out wrong. – ( humming ) – I like to assume the note. Why is it so hard for you? – It’s making me cough. – Really? My eye, look at my eye, it waters. ( humming ) Hit a harmony note. ( humming melodically ) It kinda has a slight didgeridooishness to it. – ( imitates didgeridoo ) – Never use that as an adjective. – Um, okay. – Next, we need to determine, uh, what time of instrument this would be. Is it a brass? Is it a string? – There’s no strings. – Not a brass. Woodwind, is it keyboard? Percussion? – It’s not a keyboard. – It’s definitely an electronic instrument. – Yeah. – It’s like an electronic keyboard. – Uh-oh. I disengaged it. – That’s what I was trying to say, But it’s percussive though, isn’t it? Is a didgeridoo a percussive– percussion instrument? – No. – Because it’s got a similar– A didgeridoo is a horn-ish thing… – ( laughter ) – Like a rain stick for your mouth. ( imitating didgeridoo ) It’s a– it’s a woodwind. – Let’s actually– – Let’s focus on this. – Let’s– let’s– test it to– – We’re undermining our ability to determine if this is an instrument by not knowing what a didgeridoo is. Well, let’s just– it just sounds didgeridooish. Let’s test this with an actual song. We don’t know what’s gonna happen, but let’s play the first song and see what happens. ( music playing ) Very outbackish. ( trimmers vibrate to song ) Oh, and it kind of has a nice resonance to it. ( vocalizing with song ) – All right, cut it. – ( music stops ) But let’s, uh, try a different genre. You had to supplement it with your voice. – That’s not a good sign. – Well, that’s– You felt the need to go ( vocalizing ) You can play guitar and sing. – Yeah. – All right, give me another genre. – ( dance music plays ) – Ooh. Oh, some EDM. ( chuckles ) It really works with this. – ( trimmers vibrate ) – ( deep voice) Yeah. It’s an added level of difficulty. It’s like, I– You’re like, uh, uh. You’re like missing your nose. I feel like I’m gonna stab my brain. – ( laughs ) – That one actually did work. But the ultimate test for any potential instrument is the greatest sing-along song of all time. “Camptown Races,” hit it! Oh, my goodness! The instrument broke in my nose! Is it in there? – Is it up in there? – ( chuckles ) No, it’s there. – Oh, my God. – Um, are you okay? – Do you care? – No. ( laughs ) Oh. Well, here’s the question: is it an instrument? I am okay. I think it kind of worked kind of okay with the EDM, but… I don’t– it is an instrument in that it’s just like an instrument to use on nose hairs. – It’s not– – But is it a musical instrument? It’s not a musical instrument, guys. – I don’t think a nose hair trimmer – I’m sorry. is a musical instrument. This is a fail. Thank you for liking, comment, and subscribing.
