(upbeat music) – And we’re back. – Mythical Beasts, when I say the word instrument, what jumps into your head? – Saxophone? – Tambourine? – Didgeridoo. – Well those are the three most obvious choices. But perhaps it’s time we expand that list, because today we ask: is this an instrument? – I’m pretty excited about this, because the world is our oyster and there’s lots of– – But an oyster is not an instrument. – What better soundtrack to being in an oyster, or being an oyster. I don’t even know how the oyster thing works. Let’s just forget about that. Here’s what’s gonna happen. We’re gonna be given something that’s typically not thought of as a musical instrument. We do not know what it is. And then we’re going to, through a series of– – Rigorous tests. – Rigorous tests. – Very rigorous. – We’re gonna determine if it is an instrument for your musical benefit. – Okay, so let’s close our eyes and Chase is going to place the instrument in our hands. – We don’t know if it’s an instrument, but it is in our hands. So our eyes are closed, we’re gonna open ’em. Warning, we’re about to open our eyes. Stand back. – Three– – [Both] Two, one. – It’s a little nose hair trimmer or ear hair trimmer. – Oh, nose hair trimmer, okay. So this is great, because I lost the key piece to my nose hair trimmer at home and I’ve really built ’em up, they’re really starting to forest-ate. – Well, you can take care of that as part of this process. Now the first thing I think we should probably do, is just see if it makes a note of anything. – Well it makes a noise. – Is it a singable note, are they making the same note? Are they calibrated exactly the same? – Yep. (humming) It does get the head resonance. – I like it, I like it. – Gosh, it’s– – You don’t like it? – It tickles so bad, this is not like mine. – I actually do this sometimes with things that, like vibrating things that I put around my head. (audience laughing) I like, I’m sorry that came out wrong. I like to assume the note. Why is it so hard for you? – It’s making me cough. Look at my eyes, it’s watering. (humming) – Hit a harmony note. (humming in harmony) It kinda has a slight didgeridoo-ishness to it, never use that as an adjective. – Next we need to determine what type of instrument this would be, is it a brass, is it a string, there’s no strings. – This is not brass. – Woodwind? Is it keyboard, percussion? – It’s not a keyboard. – It’s definitely an electronic instrument, it’s like an electronic keyboard is what I was trying to say. – I disengaged it. But it’s percussive though, isn’t it? Is a didgeridoo a percussion instrument? – No, a didgeridoo is a horn-ish thing, like a rain stick for your mouth. It’s a woodwind. – Let’s test– – We’re undermining our ability to determine if this is an instrument by not knowing what a didgeridoo is. – It just sounds didgeridoo-ish. Let’s test this with an actual song. We don’t know what’s gonna happen, but let’s play the first song and see what happens. (lively music) – Very outback-ish. (whirring and lively music) – It kinda has a nice rhythm to it. (Link singing) – Alright, cut it, but let’s try a different genre. – You had to supplement it with your voice, that’s not a good sign. You felt the need to go (singing). – You can play guitar and sing. Alright, gimme another genre. (electronic dance music) – Some EDM. It really works with this. (whirring and electronic dance music) – It’s an added level of difficulty. You’re like missin’ your nose– – I feel like I’m gonna stab my brain. That one actually did work, but the ultimate test for any potential instrument is the greatest sing-a-long song of all time, Camptown Races, hit it! Is it up in there? – No, it’s there. Are you okay? – Do you care? – No. (laughing) – Well, here’s the question, is it an instrument? I am okay. – I think it worked kinda okay with the EDM, but I don’t, it is an instrument in that it’s just like an instrument to use on nose hairs. But is it a musical instrument? – It’s not a musical instrument, guys. – I don’t think a nose hair trimmer– – I’m sorry. – Is a musical instrument, this is a fail. – Thank you for liking, commenting and subscribing. – You know what time it is. – I’m Gina. – And I’m Tiffany. – And we just celebrated Book Character Day. – And now it’s time to spin… – [Both] The Wheel of Mythicality. – Click the bottom link to watch today’s episode from the beginning. – And click the top link to watch us play What Made Them Puke with the GMM crew and more! – And to find out where the Wheel of Mythicality is going to land.
