BFBA 16: Burn Baby Burn (Me A CD)

ramble [Music] welcome to best friends back all right the show where two high school best friends try the best friend thing again i’m nakeen homaifad and i’m stevie nguyen levine and today we are doing a deep dive into nostalgia with some music we’re gonna we’re gonna go through our past music catalogs uh we’ve each kind of uh picked a handful of songs that bring us back to that that special moment and uh we’re gonna trade stories i’m so excited to show you the cd i burned for this you what [Laughter] we were talking the other day anytime someone mentions cd i’m immediately brought back to my sister borrowing my britney spears cd and then stepping on it breaking it in half and it was a big uh debatable debatable yeah um come on girl luckily there was a boy in my class that was trying to make friends via burning people cds and he did burn me a new britney spears cd from like limewire or napster or something these were in your shula meet days right oh for sure for sure this was like uh this was hit me baby one more time oh uh gosh that song that music video was one of my first i think that’s one of the first like music videos i remember watching and being like ah she’s doing that yeah i have a few britney spears videos in my in my head slave for you uh was a big one there was a lot of fake sweat uh all over everyone in that particular video yeah how have you been i’ve been great i have some very exciting things happening this weekend the short film i’m always in is going to be screening before jordan peele’s movie yeah amazing movie nope i won’t be able to see it because i don’t live in the places where the theater or the where the movie is screening but i’m hoping that to live vicariously through people who do you can imagine what the experience would be you can go to your uh local movie theater and then like 30 minutes before a random screening and maybe play the short film like on your iphone or something yeah that’s a great idea right like external speakers bluetooth that thing yes that’s totally allowed no one will mind um that’s so cool dude awesome have you ever seen yourself on the big screen before just at uh the festival yeah oh yes but that was like a yeah but not like in a movie theater what do you oh like in a movie theater that normal normal moviegoers are going to i mean yeah yeah yeah because the festival was like just huge room but not like theater style scene okay there was no popcorn there you know yeah i have seen myself on the big screen it was myself in um i believe ninth grade it was wow yes i went to uh an acting camp at ucla i’m pretty positive between middle school and uh and high school and um at this camp we redid scenes from famous movies and we redid a scene from clueless but i had never seen clueless because i’m pretty sure i was not of age to see clueless at the time so yeah it must have been that you know eighth grade time period you are the virgin who can’t drive and i had i had braces on um you don’t want to see yourself on the big screen at that age i’ll just put it that way okay you may have had braces but i bet you had perfect skin no i don’t recall that i don’t recall that i recall an ill-fitting american eagle polo braces it wasn’t great speaking of uh dental things i also had this week okay i find that people fall on either side of this argument but i had what is in my mind a horrific experience this week because okay in your relationship with zach do you have a side and by that i mean like at the bed side of the bed yes but like side of like you’re getting to you’re preparing your dinner your bowl is always on the right or you’re getting waters your water’s always on the right like there’s certain things where there are two of something and i always know i’m on the right side and cassie’s on the left side i i we don’t we just have is this a typical okay it’s not typical in my household one of the things that there’s a right side and a left side for is our toothbrushes oh you’ve heard about the toothbrushes oh no and yes yes and apparently only i have been living by this i’m on the right side you’re on a mess because cassie called out this week i think you’ve been using my toothbrush and i was like oh my god i’m going to die gross that’s great okay so some people are like whatever like if i’m with someone i can share their tooth toothbrush i think that is insane i don’t understand that at all like that is the most disgusting intimate possible thing to share yeah i 100 agree with you oh god listen it’s fine everything do you use the same string of floss oh my god i don’t even want to i can’t i i just want to erase it i just want to erase it from my mind did you not notice that it was that the bristles were wet no i was i was the first one to use it that day okay so it wasn’t noticed she noticed the bristles were wet how long was she letting this happen i don’t know she’s she she that’s not her forte calling out things like that i’m sure it was going on for too long it’s horrific it’s so terrible oh yeah yeah no offense to cassie’s mouth but i agree that that’s yeah and then she like that she was offended that i was so disgusted not like it’s not about you it’s not about you but it is about you yes you know what’s funny i was at the dentist this week and i thought how interesting that our cycles have synced up that we’re going to the dentist at the same time but no it seems like you had a different dental dental issue no no our dental cycles have not synced do you like going to the dentist [  ] no who you like going to the dentist come on i was hoping we could agree are you kidding me no why do you like going to the dentist i love leaving the dentist and being like my mouth is freaking pristine i love them like just digging through brushing it i love having my teeth flossed by another person oh that’s your case oh you know uh music at the dentist that’s my transition and i was just gonna transition into you know what you know what what what was your transition it was just a hey you know what was also fun this week yeah going through a rabbit hole of my old spotify mixes what is the time span on your side because like you know we’ve each picked a handful of songs like what’s the how how far back in your memories are we going today we go far back yes same in my childhood same yeah but this was so much fun and i’m very excited i’m very excited to see do you want to play one first because we we also decided to do like somewhat of a which we don’t have to keep up the whole time but somewhat of a quiz of sorts so like one of us is going to play a song and then the other person person’s going to try and kind of guess generally uh what that song might remind that person of um and or perhaps because logan’s the only one that knows the songs that we each picked out maybe there’s maybe we have a memory associated with the song that the other person’s gonna play that’s right that’s right why don’t you go first because i i’m just a little nervous to get started so will you do it okay yeah i’m kicking things off with a light-hearted um oh yeah should i this is like a radio dj situation yes welcome to 1075 kzl greensboro’s hottest station yes all right let’s kick things off with this beautiful little ditty [Laughter] this is one of those songs you put your finger on your ears [Music] i mean it just it makes you want to dance right oh i’ve got the words all wrong that’s it this is a different part of the song he laughs okay do you remember who this is i have no idea who it is but i know exactly what my hair looked like when i listened to it like a crimping situation yes it was like curled uh like turned over curled hair in like four sections wow yep i didn’t think a little bit style uh oh butterfly clip yes yes yes um this is dream oh do you remember now that i say that name so there was and i don’t remember the specifics but my little like diddy thing was a nod because this was one of i think he at the time was going by puff daddy this is one of uh puff daddy’s like make a band situation yes i loved that show do you have any idea do i think do you have any idea what yeah yeah i think that this could be a song that was played while you and popular girl number two were getting for a school dance in the seventh grade we’re getting ready for school dance um that is that is a great guess that you have the time period correct can i give you some options sure does this song remind me of a a sleepover gone wrong b a lip sync performance gone wrong or c a chance encounter at the airport gone wrong it’s b why do you think it’s b because i could see you singing this song because i saw you singing this song when it just played and i felt like that was just a flashback okay yes you were right so it was uh we had in middle school and i think this was one year only and this was like you know jewish day school days so like right we had a lip sync uh contest because like i said on one of the other episodes uh that show with fergie and the great pretenders the lip sync show was super popular at the time and so we had a lip sync contest and it wasn’t i don’t think it was popular girl number two i think it was i know it was definitely lucinda melvin but we you know the the one thing about that song is like it makes you want to dance and i know there was there was a particular dance associated with it and um i just remember rehearsing it the the contest was in the gym i remember i think we were wearing like spaghetti strap like tight shirts you know what it wasn’t one year only because i think another year is when i wore the nsync fleece vest situation and i got to be a dude which uh was much better for me but uh yes so and then the other thing is where popular girl number two does come in is i remember um i was like on a trip and i want to say it was like i was in florida or something and i had a um discman right that’s what you call the cd player version this cd was non-stop the entire trip and i had told popular girl number two that when i was finished with it i’d give it to her to listen to and so we were just obsessed with dream and talking about them all the time maybe she was in the lip sync dance because that would make sense but like i can see the cd oh my gosh in my player and you would clean it right it would like get like stopped up and you could yeah pull it out oh the cd player was one of the it kind of looked like those original macs that had like a glazed color but then you can see through it yeah it was blue and you could see the mechanics through it yeah so it was basically like science at the same time yeah yeah yeah totally uh and i’m totally not gay at all what what a jam dude what a joke when i hope comes back because that that kind of that kind of music could really lift a generation i didn’t look into where dream was now because i didn’t want to go into a possible sinkhole of depression because i have a feeling that at least one of the four or five stories would lead i mean to a to to a bad place yeah so yeah let’s kick things off on a really high note i love that okay all right well logan i have a lot to compete with but you let a rip on my song and we’ll go [Music] yeah you’re taking it down wow this is like o.g emo you still don’t know who it is oh my god i’m kicking myself for not immediately knowing who it is but i know the song i can’t believe oh gwen stefani no doubt yeah yeah don’t speak yeah speak oh my god you picked like the saddest part of the song you pick like the most emotional like yeah build up of the song too i think what is amazing about this song is that the beginning of it the first like 20 seconds are so iconic it was yeah i mean iconic for me i guess every time i hear the beginning of a song i really love i know exactly what it is yeah yeah maybe not someone else but don’t i was obsessed with no doubt this song takes me back well i guess before i tell you where it takes me back to do you want to tell me or do you want me to give you some clues okay so i’m feeling one i cannot pinpoint the exact year okay but i know like i’m seeing like dyed hair for gwen stefani in my mind and some maybe some like leopard print you know highlights there was this like era or this time period of music that um like looking out a window while it was raining outside was like the motif you know like and i remember like a hilary duff song that was okay i’m sorry i’m sorry i’m sorry we’re not going to water down this amazing song with a disney channel listen hillary duff had some good music my goodness all right i’m gonna give you some clues yeah i don’t know exactly but i feel like you were in your feels possibly for this song okay great was it a date gone wrong no a slow dance gone right or a custom ring tone for someone i liked oh my gosh remember those ringtone okay i know it was not a date unless and excuse me unless your definition of date is like very loose oh my gosh is it a date and i’m calling you out i don’t think it was a date and i don’t think it was a slow dance i think it was a ringtone you’re wrong it was a slow dance it was a slow dance but i kind of tricked you because yeah romantic slow dance so what is that supposed to mean you’re dancing it was an independent slow dance so this song i i remember listening to in the 90s okay yeah what was the year my memory i don’t know when it came out but this is 96 is when i have the most vivid memory of this song okay okay so this is when i was probably like seven eight years old and i was obsessed with dancing to music in my living room i would come up with i would choreograph dances they were like interpretive dances okay that all involved some level of acrobatics because i had learned recently to do how to do a round off which is like the cartwheel no two feet together down at the same time oh no yeah what have you always well because i’m i’m picturing i remember your house that at least i knew you in were you always in that house because i’m looking i’m picturing the living room and i’m saying to myself this sounds not okay i would not attempt a round off in your living room but remember i was also really small so like negin now is not that much bigger than nikki you do your round off elsewhere yeah but it was basically there was runway for one round off and then so i’d basically go in a straight line and do these interpretive dances in a line back and forth back and forth to all kinds of music but especially don’t speak okay but the summer of 96 my family goes to iran okay for the summer to visit friends and family and i don’t know what came over me what kind of confidence i had but i hijacked a party okay i hijacked a party and decided that this iranian-american girl was going to perform oh my god both of our first songs are about like perfect bad performances okay and so for four minutes and 23 seconds i am in the middle of a much larger living room going back and forth doing an interpretive dance to no doubts don’t speak and this is on video this is on video oh okay guys and my cousin sent it to me recently he’s like you remember this like and it was really good wasn’t it did you nail the round off nailed the round off see there are all these women in the video there are like some much older women there that have they weren’t seven that have their like head covering on everyone’s just like staring there’s no like in my mind this was such an incredible performance everybody was wowed by my flexibility and people are just staring and probably like this american [  ] needs to stop all right so i love that we both started in in the middle yeah yeah no no it was middle school years and yeah yeah yeah yeah i was seven or eight so we started yeah i i did not go in chronological order because i didn’t want you to start guessing a pattern here because we’re keeping points okay let’s play uh my next one [Music] mariah i didn’t know you like this kind of music good girl good girl i’m trying not to sing because i know it’s not gonna sound good oh it does not sound good yeah when i do it uh-huh sure [Music] oh such a hit yes cassie thought when i told her what we were doing today she thought that we weren’t playing the songs but we were singing not without mouth you’re not absolutely not you’re filthy now okay yes it’s mariah carey you know do you remember year title anything come to mind for you um mariah carey was it called baby always be my baby always be my baby yeah and then oh i i can’t tell you the year but it’s it seems like it’s before dream certainly the other major female artist that you referenced yeah it’s 95 so we’re mid 90s here this is something you and mrs levine would just belt out in the cards going through the green that’s true it’s it that is a fact that’s not the memory that i’m i’m referencing specifically but that is true my mom and i uh bonded over this particular album and we both loved this cd we shared we shared the cd version of it but here are your options my first crush my after school tutor or my cousin’s pop mitzvah oh okay i’m gonna say it was a slo it was like your cousin’s butt mitts that was not a slow dance you’re watching people slow down it was an independent slow dance when i went to iran okay so you’re going back mitzvah yeah that’s that’s believable right i threw i threw a little jewish in there and so that’s what you went for it was a trap it was a jewish it was it was a trap yeah that’s what we’re known for um no the answer is my after-school tutor wow oh my god was it a woman and you had a crush on her no okay so in second grade i went to i went to public school until like up through second grade uh now north carolina public school don’t knock down north carolina public school i went to it and look at me now well that’s that’s true i don’t i don’t know how you you did that because for me my parents had to get me after school tutoring because i was too bored and too too good at school because oh yeah so smart um so i would go to after school tutoring to learn more because i was complaining to my parents that i wasn’t learning enough yeah and so all of second grade i i would go to this after-school tutor that was uh well actually more towards your house so it was like a little bit of a little bit of a journey for me and throwback to the discman i was just talking about i had a walkman i don’t know what i mean like yeah it’s a cassette tape yeah um and the only cassette that i played was this album from mariah carey and so i would listen to it over and over again and and you know since it was a cassette you’d have to remind it every time and um i also like obviously didn’t have much of a personality i guess because i made that cassette tape my personality and i would talk about it constantly i would talk about mariah carey all the time as a second grader yes and also the other thing when i think about mariah carey did you see her mtv cribs oh amazing hey i i thought like did we even talk about this that’s how often i think about that in tv crips honestly mariah come on the show come on the show honestly dr nas puts herself in the same category as yeah yeah yeah remember like she like got in her bathtub she filled up her bathtub in that episode and got in with like a silk robe and she was like this is my bathtub and i think it had like flowers floating on top of it and also i think she it was a new york city like yes situation and she’s like i only have six floors or whatever and they did i believe they used to do multiple uh people in an mtv cribs episode and this episode was only mariah carey because the house was so freaking big do you think if mtv asked to do a cribs episode at your house how would you feel about it it’d be about two minutes long so my house is so they’re like we’re doing a tick tock cribs video yeah yeah yeah i’m like here’s where the grout is missing for half of my kitchen tile well are you ready for the next one yes okay logan at first we started [Applause] okay our vibes are still coming from the same happy place yep even though even we’re still happy in this moment yes no no doubt one had had fields but this is bringing me back to dream times have the audacity to even come up with me yeah some money from me so who is it destiny’s child 100 right what’s the song called i didn’t play the chorus on purpose because that would take me give it away [Music] i don’t know it’s escaping me for some reason bill’s bills bills okay yeah yeah yeah yep yep yep okay interesting okay so destiny’s child i totally get it bills bill’s bills very specific i was a mature deep cut steep cut gosh where could this for some reason for me and this is so specific and i don’t even know what it’s attached to because sometimes does it i i picture a location in my mind sometimes yeah for different songs that makes sense i’m like on market street and greensboro for this i don’t know why i’m like at that point where you could like where market street and friendly kind of get a little bit close together because you know they run parallel yeah that’s where i am and we’re back to kind of cg area i don’t know why i have no idea wow okay well this memory is located in greensboro north carolina okay so it makes me feel better about my weird ass thing is this is this a girl’s trip to the four seasons mall is it a real life john tucker must die moment or was it a school presentation school presentation ding-a-lang girl yeah you got it right what kind of school presentation did you do you think it was um well here’s the thing and i don’t want to spoil the song i’m pr i’m thinking about because if we do this in a future episode because i’m having a lot of fun but i do remember there was a period of time in middle school where you would do school presentations and there would be like a music track so that’s why i went with school presentation because i have one that that we constructed a whole bunch oh my god so good but it’s what kind of it was a sixth grade talent show wait oh oh oh you were using the term loosely one hundred percent reasonably loosely give it all away and the thing okay that was very confusing that was very my sixth grade talent show so similar to you a few of my friends and i decided to do a little a little fun thing a fun little ditty for our school for the talent show but unlike you we did not lip sync yet no we choreographed it we just did it straight up dance okay okay you didn’t sing no no no that’s what i thought i was like oh my god they tried to sing destiny’s childhood kelly rowland i would do a whole episode with you and all of your music oh my god so talented and so so nice god love her i also feel like destiny’s child like beyonce and kelly in particular have felt like the older sister i wish i had you know like we’ve known them for sure why what about michelle why are you leaving michelle out well because michelle is like the half sister because she came later she came later right so it’s like first family like we’re like like beyonce and kelly could not catch a [  ] break michelle is out there working and working her she’s off and she’s a hard worker good work ethic talented but beyonce and kelly are like you know your biological sister and kelly’s the half anyway so back to this talent show okay um my mom wasn’t a huge fan of me just imagine signing up to sing and dance to this song i don’t think she had the same like appreciation for destiny’s child at that moment that developed later in her life but she like i fought and fought and she finally let me do this with a few of my friends but the compromise was oh no that i could only go to like 50 of practice not 100 of practice for the talent show she was like she would just be like okay that’s enough she’s like i’ll let you do it but i’ll but you’re going to be a little bit worse than everyone else exactly she’s like you can’t be too sexy so i’m going to i was going to ask what are the outfits what what so the outfits yeah i also fought this fought her on this red sophie shorts and white tank tops that is an interesting destiny’s child choice well what would you recommend um i remember a lot of like neutral tones on destiny’s child neutral are yeah they were all about jewel tones no they had uh what was their hit that was they were wearing like kind of um like almost like desert like army stuff for one of their big songs that’s much later there i think that’s okay with three people okay so you recall destiny’s child in red sophie shorts no we had it was i remember it going off without a hitch but i remember being very i mean of course it tracks right i did an independent slow dance and i thought it was amazing but destiny’s child my gosh i love it all right i’m here i’m excited for i’m excited for your next one let’s see if we stay in the pre-pubescent we’re not we’re we’re not going to i’ll just put that out there right now let’s uh let’s see [Music] [Music] [Music] this is such a good driving song [Music] okay i will admit well the song is called horchata yeah right i don’t remember the name of the band that’s escaping me vampire weekend yes i remember like i feel like vampire weekend was one of those bands that like if you were a fan if you knew their music it made you like cool like oh cool you have some good music taste you know it’s not just what was top 40 yeah right it’s like indie but mainstream yeah you know it’s very mainstream adjacent in a lot of ways 107.5 is not play okay so what do i yeah give me some clues i’ll give you the year it was 2010. so we’re not talking you know childhood here does it remind me of a drunken halloween a drunken afternoon by the pool or a drunken malibu dinner if it wasn’t a drunken pool memory then you need to make it one because this is a perfect song for that yeah when you said this is a great song for driving completely agree the thing about the song is like it makes me so happy like it feels like light and yep and it feels very socal like it feels like sunny and like carefree and oh yeah kind of surfy vibes and you’re just just a little bit tan you’re just a little bit me now you’re just burnt yeah exactly no the answer is a drunken halloween and this would have been my second halloween in los angeles because i moved out to la in uh 2009 and so this is second halloween and um i was dressed as max from where the wild things are which i think that like the live-action movie had come out recently or something or like it was going to come out like there was a reason that i was dressed as thinking max so i had like a white uh one-piece pj set situation and a tail and a crown and uh chucks on the checks i’m i’m wearing today no no holier checks and there are some there’s some photo evidence of this night but like this was a time period of extreme drunkenness and also all my friends are older than me and um i of course there was there was a designated driver or something anyway we were going to multiple parties this was in the time of multiple parties yes and we went to this party in chinatown and it was this really cool big loft and we walked in and uh from what i recall um it was like oh there’s gonna be a band playing so i was like okay cool and the band was vampire weekend yes oh my god so was this you seeing vampire weekend for the first time knowing it was them or you were like exposed to them and this was just a cool you know i’m going to be honest with you as i said i had imbibed quite a bit of alcohol so the details are a little bit fuzzy i just remember i of course i knew who vampire weekend was i i already was a fan i just like and you know what when it comes to bands like that i could not tell you what a single one of them looks like i also have for sure i’m like dude i don’t care sing for me but i really don’t care what you look like and i could not recall any of that so but yeah i i i remember thinking oh this is this is really cool i’m in chinatown at a surprise vampire weekend uh show this is a very la situation um but oh man i love that album so much it still makes me so so happy to listen yeah that song all right well let’s go to la proxima cancion [Music] just you just [Music] wow it’s kind of amazing the genres we’re selecting are lining up [Music] yep stick to lip syncing baby girl [Laughter] [Music] oh yeah another really great driving song yeah good like road trip song funny you say that one of them is that is that the memory no one of my quiz options was epic road trip okay so i’m taking that out of the um of the equation uh it’s not as happy of a song as uh the vampire weekend track there’s again you’re bringing a little bit of feels with your songs today [Music] i could not tell you who this was if i had to guess and this is all wrong like matchbox 20 creed what what that’s that is rude that you i knew you would say that take it take it back maroon is five okay honestly yeah another white band yes yeah yeah yeah temper trap and the song is sweet disposition okay so your choices are that are left are it’s a email romance or is it a run through the marsh at dusk when the sky is orange and the pelicans are flying in the distance otherwise known as where the crawdads sing i don’t know if you read that book or know about the movie that’s just coming out wow all of your like options have had some kind of like semi-romantic thing to them an email romance or run through a marsh at dawn at dusk i don’t know at dusk i’m not waking up early i didn’t say a marsh a marsh i don’t know no it’s not it’s an email romance but i was thinking if i was going to shoot a movie like this is the kind of song that i might post oh oh yes this is center cinematic yeah yeah yeah cinema but that seems like there’s a lot of danger there like you could step on a lot of things uh yeah would you be wearing shoes i don’t it’s absolutely well that’s why it’s aspirational that’s why it’s in a movie and not my real life because i always wonder about those things when i see i’m like are they wearing shoes what about ticks what about oh what about kicks what about tanks um email romance so this was what was this like 2008 earlier 2004. i actually think that is when the song came out that’s spot on okay well last time you said wow and then you told me i was wrong so i need to always hang on after your wow to see what your wow is more okay so this song takes me to a romantic place because uh it was shared by like a guy that i had a crush on so when i was in college i think this was my senior year i went to some social whatever some party where alumni were coming back and this guy was like four or five years older than me i met him there we hid it off and of course he didn’t go to college with me so i didn’t see him ever again but we continued like the conversation and the flirting over email and the way that we would interact was we were sharing music so this was in the days of like you know you weren’t an idiot and you weren’t downloading songs illegally you were doing it illegally this is post napster and limewire but this was like did you ever use the hype machine no the website okay it was a website that like showcased really cool but songs that were off most people’s radars and that for me was like that’s when you really showed somebody if you had like great taste in music it’s like how deep could you go how unrecognizable could the song or the band be and that would somehow sing yeah you had good taste right yeah so this guy and i for one month stevie i went back to look at my gmail records there was one month of over 100 emails that we had exchanged where we were just saying like you know oh have you heard of this song this makes me think of x y and c just back and forth and we had each of us we were attaching illegal songs attachments to our emails and i tried to see if one of the links was still live but it wasn’t it was a dead link now wait so you never saw him again never saw him again so how did it end it fizzled you sent a bad song i must have sent a bad song but i was totally cringing as i was going through this exchange a couple days ago because yeah ah i was reading what i was writing and i was like i know i thought i sounded so clever then but i don’t think i was like oh it was so uncomfortable and then i have records of me forwarding the emails and then copying and pasting our g g chats and sending it to my sister dr nas and my doctor one of my other best friends andres i’m just sending him these conversations and emails and being like what do you think what do you think right that was pretty funny right that’s pretty good right oh and so just this song always makes me think of like me having a crush a little a little too hard yeah what’s the band name temper temper trap yeah temper trap did you have that phase where you were you like and tried to impress a crush with your music or you would make them uh i don’t know about music but certainly tried to impress uh someone with like my my online wit you know yeah and then like i would never go and and look at whatever was said because i’m sure i don’t understand half of it okay that was a good one this one is uh this one’s a little bit different cigarettes and chocolate milk these are just a couple of my cravings everything it seems i like’s a little bit stronger a little bit thicker a little bit for me wait is this rhett’s newest single [Laughter] you know this is not a single clue this is rufus wainwright oh does that does that ring any bells yes totally rings bell i would have to look up what his like top hit was to remember him i don’t know if he had a top hit necessarily he had a cover of hallelujah that would also really make you cry here are your options does this song remind me of being homesick being an angsty teen or being gay i feel like this is the homesex song wow you’re wrong [Laughter] [Music] um okay so this song cigarettes and chocolate milk came out in 2001 and it actually was a song that art school boy played for me and uh we used to hang out at his house by ourselves all the time uh and just talking and whatever and he played me this song and he was like yeah he’s gay rufus wainwright’s gay and i was like oh like at the time that was like a notable thing like he said it because it was notable and it just like sparked something for me like okay this is a gay singer songwriter which is a little bit crazy to think now in 2022 like i don’t feel as if people are as like oh that’s a gay singer so much as like oh do you know so and so you know so yeah so whenever i hear the song i think about that conversation that i have with art school boy and how significant it was to be an out gay singer-songwriter yeah um and you know if you listen to the lyrics of the whole song uh he’s he’s openly gay so he makes uh references but just that idea alone um at the time in 2001 was so eye-opening and so like memorable for me that that was kind of the first openly gay you know singer-songwriter i i listened to [Music] my next song also reflects a connection a little bit different than the one that you felt but play it for us logan [Music] i’m thinking massage this literally it’s making me tear up already i’m thinking like religion [Music] okay keep going nothing’s pinging for me [Music] i would be surprised if you knew uh the name of the group is the album leaf and the song is the light are there words are there lyrics to this there are no lyrics to this song there are no lyrics to the song i like i like a lot of music without lyrics one of those yep um hey you’re lucky that i didn’t put classical music on this otherwise spoiler alert [Laughter] all right okay so this song makes me want to cry every time i hear it does it make you think of a breakup a hangover the day after your 27th birthday when you realize you still don’t got it and pulling an all-nighter before your thesis is due well you said it makes you want to cry and i doubt all of those things make me want to cry well but like pulling out i mean they’re different types of crying and i don’t feel like you’d like recall a stressful cry now and like be like yeah i want a stressful cry to this necessarily i don’t know yeah i mean the waiting over here is just crying yeah i have no idea again it to me it sounded like like spiritual meets massage and i didn’t get into the um tearful part so it’s obviously like okay very much a memory to you so that’s why i’m i i’m leaning towards breakup because it seems like the most like emotionally charged of the options but i don’t know yes you would be correct okay and yeah i wasn’t giving you much to work with the clip i kept it short because you know time but i do recommend that everybody listen to this song if you want to access grief or you need a good cry so i first came across this song because i was a huge fan of scandal okay carrie washington the tv show okay yeah the tv show okay amazing show got a little bit crazy in the later seasons but it’s the show about a woman who’s like a political fixer and uh the president of the united states who is not her husband because he has a wife but her lover right they have this like unrequited love and they play this song anytime there’s this really tender moment between the two of them where it’s obvious wait a second wait a second this is not in your own life this is this is a scandal this is a t i didn’t network tv show okay this is again the power of freaking music is that it made it feel like it was my memory but there’s more there’s more this song was just always so amazing if you’re a scandal fan you’ll know this song for the first few seconds of it so i cannot wait to hear about all of the people who were taken back because i did do i did do a little bit of research to be like does anybody know what the song is or is this going to be one of those duds girl people are all over it on youtube you read the the comments and people are like oh my god does anybody else cry when they hear the song scandal fits olivia pope oh why couldn’t they ever be together anyway the fun thing the way that i tie it back to my life is that this song was playing when i broke up with my first serious boyfriend like in what context it wasn’t playing as we as we broke up but like i was listening to music after we broke up and this was a song that like was seared into my memory and i always associate it with a breakup so much so that when zach and i broke up we broke up for like a couple of months yeah got back together right but we had we we dated for a couple months broke up and i was so sad that i put this song on to help me cry yeah and process and i remember sitting on my couch he had just you know left my place and i’m like wait i need to go put spotify on [Laughter] i need to go find the album leave school song for the light and i was like holding back my tears so that they could come out while the song played yeah you know i know you need to set the scene yeah do you have yes i had to set the scene and the tone and i wanted i guess i wanted it to be cinematic for me yeah i i don’t know myself for like when i was going through my like master list of things there were certainly some songs from particular movies that stuck out in my mind and it was like you know i remember the time period in which that movie came out and why that song in that movie was was you know monumental so i don’t fault you for that but you don’t play that song you don’t play that song to break up your own uh no they’re not they’re not breakup songs uh but i i totally get that i i get it it is interesting coming from the perspective of never having watched scandal and listening to that song because if if you are coming from that perspective it does sound like an ambient massage song so it’s interesting how they really took it and made it into something because i’m curious i’d be curious to see if that was the intention of the album leaf when they wrote the song or was it just like the music supervisor going this works well with this scene let’s bring it back and then they are the ones that kind of created this meaning behind the song this meaning yeah yes yeah that’s a really good question that i don’t have the answer for but i want you to listen after this i do want you to listen to the whole song and get back to me with whether or not you still think it’s a massage song because massage songs always have a little bit of ding ding ding in the background that i don’t like okay so all right let’s go on to the next song before i continue crying this is my finale song um on my end and i didn’t i mean it is the last song on my list i did not set it up to be like a finale so take your expectations down a little bit and uh take a listen okay [Music] such a good message [Music] okay i know the song i don’t know who’s saying it yeah i think that’s okay i mean it was the eagles take it easy it’s it’s oh there you go yeah it’s in it it’s in like a ambiguous like time period of uh like fleetwood mac etc so like did your parents listen to them is that how you were exposed well you’ve hit in the right area you’ve hit in the general vicinity i was gonna say vicinity which is not a word um because this i mean it’s a song from way back in in 1972 is when this album came out but it’s kind of one of those just like classic i wouldn’t say soft rock necessarily american classic rock songs so your options are my mom’s bloody mary’s my mom’s 50th birthday or my mom’s first visit to l.a we’ve talked about your mom and mariah carey but that was kind of an unexpected memory that you brought to it so maybe you were trying to bring your mom onto this list and this has something to do with your god all of your answers have to do with it yeah they’re all i was gonna say like you’re not narrowing anything down they’re all my mom was it my bloody mary’s 50th birthday our first visit to l.a it’s it’s the first visit to l.a it does sound like a great lie right like i’m very good at putting these multiple choice things together because that’s not true that’s not that’s not the right answer okay so what was your mom’s 50th birthday no it’s my mom’s bloody mary’s why wasn’t your mom making those bloody marys for school okay when we went to your house so yes my parents love the eagles and i i associate like kind of those americana outdoor moments in my life with the eagles and now that my parents live in the mountains you know being in the mountains and listening to the eagles on the porch or whatever is like in my mind perfection like i just like hit something for me um and they did a large tour and they put out a special and uh my parents have this kind of like makeshift movie theater in the basement of their house now where there’s like a projection screen that comes down and so uh we put on this taped tour live special of the eagles now whenever i came home uh to visit my parents my mom would have like a special cocktail that she’s like really into and she’s gonna make for me and during this time period that was bloody mary’s those put me right to sleep well here’s the thing my mom likes a strong drink and i am a little little baby and uh so i remember having like a couple of these bloody marys and then something like taking a hold of me so that i was just glued to this special for the entirety of the special not realizing that no one else was in the entire basement they just like left me down there to watch the eagles special by myself very drunk on my mother’s bloody grace it’s an education she should be by herself um and so yeah and then the next morning i got very very sick because i consumed too much alcohol so i have that memory associated with it yeah but just like there’s something about the eagles that feels like home for me it really feels like you know reliable consistent generally good good feeling uh i just love the eagles i love the eagles alrighty here is my finale song [Music] unintentionally [Music] smile cry you’re really crazy oh i’m not really crying yes i did just wipe my eyes but i was really just concerned that my um concealer had gotten into my wrinkles uh and i was trying to smooth it out yeah this is it’s romantic it reminds me of an italian dinner um like with candlelight why are you making a face that says like maybe i’m in an area that no i was laughing because it’s lovey and rose is originally a french song so the italian of it all makes it eurocentric yeah which is not incorrect okay what else i mean get uh do i have options here am i in the right area i could give you options yeah it’s a romantic walk in the park without mosquitoes it’s a huge dinner with mosquitoes without mosquitoes with no mosquitoes okay i’m just gonna tell you what it is i’m gonna skip the thing since you’re being so judgmental i’m sorry you are going to feel like [  ] when i tell you what this reminds me of okay because it’s a really beautiful moment that you’re ruining your first option was a romantic walk without mosquitoes that’s what you said right do you know how bad the mosquito situation is right now on the east coast okay i’m gonna tell you i’m gonna tell you the answer this song reminds me of the night that zach proposed to me for our proposal we were in we were in tunisia okay and we were driving from the airport to uh what i thought was the airbnb that i had booked and after about an hour of driving i’m looking around i’m like this doesn’t look like the neighborhood or the area you know i had kind of mapped it this doesn’t look right is this cab driver trying to pull a fastball yes it’s a long trip so i’m getting a little bit antsy but we finally we finally pull up to this like beautiful boutique hotel that’s on the top of this hill that’s by the atrium uh i i forget what sea is right there but one of the seas there and zach looks to me and he’s like happy anniversary honey it was our third anniversary that night um happy anniversary like i got us this place instead as just a little treat so i was like oh so sweet thank you and we walk in we get into our room and he’s like okay i’ve made us dinner plans and you have to dress up you have to look really nice for it because it’s a very fancy it’s a very fancy restaurant and we just come come from a wedding of course um so we had weddings we had we had fancy clothes in our in our luggage but i’m like honey what are you wearing he’s like i’m going to wear my tux your tux honey there’s no way that this restaurant is that fancy okay can i see can you give me the name let me look it up let me see he’s like no i just trust me it’s a fancy restaurant just look nice so i throw on a dress that i hadn’t worn yet and we go we get into a cab and again this cab five minutes later i’m like we are passing the same freaking building again how are these cabs all trying to trick us and zach’s just talking to me talking to me he’s being really sweet and then we pull up in front of our hotel again okay so we’re back at the hotel i’m like is this the restaurant that we’re going to in the hotel why are we in this car so we get out and i’m like oh okay we’re going to the hotel restaurant fine no he’s like no we’re going to her room i’m like okay we’re having dinner in our room great at this point yeah the sheets are going to smell you don’t have you don’t have any idea no it’s our third anniversary girl i know but like you don’t when he like snapped at you like no don’t look at the restaurant i’m wearing a tux you were like this is normal behavior haver to be fair zach’s version of snapping is being like no honey just trust me it’s very calm and collected i’m the one that snapped okay okay he’s totally cool and so anyway okay so we go to our room i open the door all of the lights are off there are candles everywhere someone has put flower petals on every surface of this room and i’m like wow honey nice anniversary present at which point he tells me later that that mortified him that i thought all of this was just for an anniversary oh he’s like as if i hope you’re not expecting this for our future anniversaries and so we walk in and there’s violin music playing and it’s a huge it’s like a 6’5 violinist on a small balcony playing lovey and rose okay it was so romantic i go out to the balcony i turn around and he’s on one knee and i’m actually very surprised so it was a huge surprise but we’re sitting there now actually having dinner and this violinist is still there he’s just playing tunes it’s a tight space if we’ve just had this very intimate you know intimate moment we want to call our family but we don’t want to be rude so like after five songs i look at him and i’m like thank you so much sir he also only speaks french because it’s tunisia i don’t speak french and spanish obviously is not gonna get me anywhere excuse me um sir you’re so talented i think that will be it for tonight [Laughter] thank you so much please let me know if there’s anything i could do to help you like clean up oh so finally this guy leaves the next day though the the receptionist of the hotel who helped put like to find him she was like excuse me sir madam um was there an issue last night with the musician we’re like no he was he was wonderful they’re like oh you dismissed him so quickly that he thought oh maybe you didn’t think he was doing a good job no and we were mortified we’re like no it was just you know tight he had like an amp he had an amp connected to his violin yeah like we’re right it was next to you we are in the coven six feet sir but i was like this is really pretty but honey um how did you choose that song he was like what do you mean that’s our song and then we’re like what do you mean that’s our song he’s like yeah that’s that’s our couple song it’s like i don’t remember that being our song love you so then we had a disagreement i was like it’s really beautiful but i don’t remember it being your song honey and then and then he was i was like i’ll just give this one to him he did put so much work into this beautiful proposal and so we ended up dancing to it at our wedding too so that became it’s now he’s now wedged it into being our song but it brings me very very cute that’s kind of a fairy tale perfect proposal i think your advice to our friends listening is if they are going to copycat the proposal please inquire about the size of the violinist um that will be incorporated and you want someone exactly who it can compactly fit into a tight space exactly exactly and only in a 10-minute timeline i think this is a perfect like awkward moment of the week yeah well i was gonna transition the advice because i i had a course i had uh many an awkward social moment so i was hoping i’m excited to hear yeah i was hoping to get your advice on this one for our final segment you know we we’ve we’ve been in this world of zoom meetings you know for for almost three years now like it’s been it’s been it’s been a long time and and there’s still awkward exchanges awkward moments of you’re on mute you’re on mute oh you’re you know that type of thing um rampant um but i committed a cardinal awkward uh sin this past week um because i was in a uh a weekly group meeting internal only uh thankfully it’s our meeting where we talk about um promos in case you need that detail um and there’s about 15 people in that meeting i believe and i was working from home and you know when it’s a larger meeting like that that i’m i’m not necessarily leading cassie had popped her head into my office because it was lunchtime and so i was like okay i’ll just turn off the camera and the mic and just briefly talk to cassie about this gossip with cassie about the people on the call well i turned off my camera but i didn’t turn off my mind oh no and listen it could have been a lot worse essentially the conversation was i’m really hungry i said that i was like i’m really hungry uh what’s what’s for what’s for lunch are you okay cause she seemed like a little bit sad is this when she tells you i think we’ve been using the same thing so everybody found out no and then and then i said like well i love you or something and then i turn back to my computer and i saw that my mic was on and i saw a slack from from someone being like oh steve your mic’s on and then i just kind of the meeting was proceeding uh with my mic on but i just got on and and i said like i oh i’m sorry about my mic being on in case you didn’t know i really love cassie is what i said but then i sat there going oh my god what did i really say what did i say in the in in you know other than that and um i found it to be really embarrassing like the type of thing that i thought about going to sleep at night and cassie was like you’re being so ridiculous you didn’t say anything embarrassing you could have talked about like your [  ] of the day or something like really intimate or weird you could have gone into like extreme baby talk or you know there’s so many things that you could have done that you could have been like oh [  ] logan’s on this call i’m so tired of [  ] logan yeah they’re so many things that could have happened so i’m very grateful yeah but i don’t know there’s just something about me being like i’m really hungry i love you that i was like this is not stevie in this situation and i just i was a little bit mortified that it had happened but i felt like i had a semi-okay save of acknowledgement well honestly i gotta tell you i think the save was that you had a totally appropriate and sweet conversation yeah that was a save i don’t even think you needed to did you stop the meeting and say it out loud i didn’t or did you stop the meeting but i did say it out loud excuse me everyone stop talking i as you might know my mic was not muted i wanted to acknowledge what i have done and ask for your forgiveness no oh you should have brought cassie on and been like cassie what do we have to say for ourselves hungry who’s really hungry it’s me you know what i totally get that is an embarrassing moment because it makes you think of all the things you could have said yeah and that you may have said if you said it was like not work stevie exactly you being really no but you being sweet and loving is a great thing for your colleagues to see i think they’ll be like oh stevie’s not a stone cold steve austin like that’s she loves that’s a nice way of saying [  ] yeah yeah i like that she’s just a sweet woman it’s one of those like brings color to my cheeks i’m talking about my face cheeks uh situations but sure i get it it wasn’t as embarrassing as it could have been it was just awkward it was just awkward it was one of those i’ve done it again it was yeah moments all right well i’m so glad that you weren’t on mute for this conversation oh bringing [Applause] needed two people to do this yeah justice this has been really fun i really like going through like a record listening
