ramble [Music] [Applause] [Music] welcome to best friends back all right the show where two High School best friends try the best friend thing again I’m Negan homai fad and I’m Stevie Wynn Levine and boy has it been an interesting uh few weeks since the two of us last saw each other not to spoil the production magic but it’s been a hot minute how have you been I’ve been good I uh I have just ended a intense social week where I went to not only one wedding no but two oh my two in one week they were on opposite sides of the country are you taking like do you have a wedding Journal where you write down like every wedding you’ve been to and do you have to like do you get new outfits it’s called Instagram yeah uh for the most part I’m wearing different things but I repeat outfits but not in the same year well not in the same year no what if you have a December wedding in a January Wedding are you saying is it a calendar year or is it in the the past 12 months that you keep thinking of yeah so it does depend on who the audience not the audience are no no let’s be real everyone’s there to see you um yes is it the same guests similar group of people or if it’s not if it’s very different I have no problem repeating yeah but I I’m not gonna lie do think about the fact that this might be photographed and oh my God how embarrassing would it be oh so embarrassing it wasn’t two places with the same amount I mean if people only knew that you kept your clothing for more than one where I do I did know a girl in high school she went to a high school in Florida she never wore any piece of clothing more than once that’s disrespectful to the Mother Earth can you believe that I can believe it but there’s something about leading with she went to high school in Florida that makes it a little bit unbelievable it makes it believable I think oh okay um was the wedding you went to you you had two separate locations yes East Coast so where where so the first one was an aspen oh my ski is oh it gets better the second one was it Upstate New York in the Adirondacks so two Mountain locations but a magnificent and slightly scary life-defying thing happened to me while we were in Aspen uh okay so knock on wood I’m still here we’re doing this conversation okay but you said magnificent but now I’m thinking it’s it’s a like you near death come come to Jesus moment kind of yeah so after the first event wedding event on Friday Zach and I walking back to our Airbnb we’re walking down like I don’t know what it was called but like Main Street right the middle of town we’re doing we’re looking through the windows of the shops we’re talking about the event that we just went through obviously and we hear a car beep a couple seconds later I look to my left Zach is on my left he looks at me his eyes are wide and he’s like come here and of course when I hear come here I think like go there do the opposite of what Sac says my my instincts are not to actually follow him so I Veer to the right instead of going to the left and I think I think I feel something on the right of my on the right of my arm upper arm kind of brushed by not not violently but just brushed by and in my head I think there must be a rat behind us because of course anything that’s on the street is like a rat in my mind you know my phobia I’m like like there’s like an animal wrap yeah thinking logically and as I turn the corner up this thing I’m like I scream because I don’t know what it is half a block ahead of me there is a black bear running up the block away from me a black bear brushed my arm rounded the corner and ran ahead most likely because I scared it with my scream at one point Zach said that the bear was right like when he looked at me with those wide eyes is when the bear was right next to me and he said it was like Kiss fish like walking right by us like just like a normal day in Aspen like the bear was also window shopping on Main Street like of all the things can you believe this a baby black bear I feel like you need to coach Zach through like how to like handle those situations okay yes what would you have suggested perhaps like a straightforward bear you know that would work nicely like there’s a bear behind you uh or or or not even no words a grab and just a hole that is what I told him when he said come here why did you go away that’s that’s my issue it’s clearly my issue and we have to work through that you know what’s funny is that I just got into not a fight with Cassie but I feel like when there’s a bump in the night I’m the one that’s gonna handle the situation and she always like Waits a few seconds and I was like you know what I feel very unprotected by you because I’m the one who’s gonna like take care of the robber or whatever and she said or the robber’s gonna take care of you I guess well right like you would be the first victim you don’t know my tasering skills uh but she said the reason that I don’t react the way that you do is because I know that you’re not in danger and that you’re overreacting and I was like that is complete [ ] but I think we you and I might be in a little bit of the same way it’s not a good wavelength no it’s not you know in intense situations like that it would behoove me to respond correctly to him to do what he says but we’ve been in this situation before I kind of I will freeze in moments like this and even when like I’m walking the dog and I’ve seen a rat scurry and my instinct it’s so bad it’s to drop the leash and then fend for yourself dog see I thought that I had had a a life-threatening couple of weeks with all the Good Mythical evenings but you’re still here you’re still here how are you feeling I will tell you that after the nightmare of our first attempt um and of course those listening who uh have followed the gme Saga know that we did not go live the night we were supposed to go live and it was not because uh of anything in our control the following week we were supposed to shoot and on location um series of videos that I won’t spoil and the place that we were going to go shoot that morning uh started to be evacuated because it caught on fire no oh my gosh so we had to scramble and find somewhere else to go to this overnight shoot that we were supposed to do oh gosh um so all that drama is captured in in this series uh that’s coming out let’s catch a break yeah then of course um you know we actually do do gme and it’s just been it’s been a little bit exhausting uh yeah you feel like you’re over the hill I don’t want to say that I am but I but let’s hope so let’s knock on all the wood knock on all the wood okay well today uh we are talking about time and more specifically we’re talking about time travel which I’ll get into but I did want to say that this is the season two finale um we’re going on a very short break we’re gonna be back with season three on October 14th but um you’re gonna have to hold on for a couple of Fridays without us highly recommend going back and listening to episodes that you haven’t already or episodes that are just your favorite or you could time travel to the third season and if you do please let us know but um I’m not going to say the origin of this was me watching A League of Their Own um instead I’m gonna say I’ll say the origin of this was Stevie watching I’ll leave on their own well I saw this dude on Tick Tock which is the other way I get all of my inspiration yeah and I searched for him after I mentioned this to y’all and I I couldn’t find him again so if anyone listening knows who I’m talking about please uh tweet at me and and we’ll add this to the description but this dude he he wore a GoPro and other like 360 cameras for an entire year of his life documenting every single moment of his life with the plan to upload all of it into a VR experience so that he could time travel back in time of his own life for the past year and I just thought that was such a well I’ll say cool such a cool thing and it sparked for me just like time travel in general and that paired with A League of Their Own and like really wanting to um be there for multiple reasons I thought hey if a time travel Genie came to both of us and said you can travel I’m a Genie in a Bottle said that and you can travel to three different time periods but only three and you had to narrow it down to three which would you pick and then also like the ground rules of this is not like a to change history situation there’s no history changing um and there’s no thinking about time travel in ways that make scientific sense this is just for fun where would you go where would you go and and why and what would you do there I will say I struggled with this prompt because everything in the past seems really dirty dirty inconvenient like like in terms of Faith or unhygienic unhygienic and everything in the future is like dystopian or underwater yeah so yeah it’s scary it is scary but you’re only visiting like you you can you can like dictate the period of time that you’d like to stay in these I understand but it did just it there was a little bit of like God dang yeah I I’m pretty happy with where with where I’m at right now okay so I also was like doing some Googling of course like if you Google like what time period is best to live in and things like that you get some weird responses but there were a bunch of articles that were like we are living in the optimal time and I was like yeah that’s [ ] up man that is crazy right right now is the best time that’s just as good as it gets terrible well and that was also a big question is like one when I was thinking about things I was like how many things have been over romanticized in media that like actually if you were to travel there you’d be really disappointed in in what’s up and then also like yeah do I put in my top three something in the future knowing that like Climate Change is Gonna really destroy everything right and then I think the other thing is that like being conscious of time periods for CIS had men white men versus um you know women people of color lgbtq like you know it was a different experience for everyone so like that’s where my head went to in terms of like okay you you’re transported somewhere you show up on a street corner yeah and you’re you and so like you know if if like I could transform into like a straight white man I guess the time travel experience would be a little bit different the world is at your history is at your fingertips yeah yeah exactly okay but I didn’t choose to shape shift for any of my things right you also went back as yourself I did but you know what I was thinking was like if I were allowed like 3.25 time travel trips I would travel back in time like to when I was like 25 24 25 and then I would do my time traveling because like a lot of my things that I picked were like hey this would be really fun and let’s be honest like we are what was our fun type low-key we are low-key fun in our mid 30s and I feel like in order to have maximum amount of fun we need to be like mid-20s or at least yeah that’s what I was thinking so if that’s allowed in the scheme I was kind of thinking like Stevie at 25 right right I guess it wasn’t allowed so we’re not gonna hear it well do you want to go first or well I want to tell you when I told Zach about about this prompt and and my choices he was stunned he was like are you kidding me well I’m gonna I’m gonna give something away I’m gonna give something away he was like all three of mine would be in the future really yeah which I think is such a reflection of his type of person he’s a very optimistic very hopeful person so he only thinks things can get better or more interesting and so I was like damn you’re wrong so like you think this relationship is gonna get better I ran my decades by Cassie well I didn’t I asked her the question as well and surprisingly she did choose similar time periods but okay she was actually the opposite of Zach in which she she didn’t she does not want to go to the Future at all um she doesn’t want to go to tomorrow really yeah okay well I can I can kick it off because maybe maybe mine will also take us back the furthest in time I’m sure they will and I think yours will be a lot smarter choices than mine because my best guess I don’t know because I went for just like off like I just went for fun mostly like I didn’t go for like this is this would be good to learn this lesson or like anything like I didn’t go through a history book or anything and I and so yeah that’s my assumption but also uh do you have a like is your order and like this is my number one place I would go okay it’s just random they seem pretty different from each other okay go for it the first one I thought of um I thought of because you know we’re getting close to Hollow wean and growing up my mom would force us all like if you want a costume you have to get creative at home she was not going to buy us an outfit just for the day so we had to make do with what we had at home and I was also not a crafty kid so like I wasn’t cutting [ ] up and put pasting it together and I wasn’t going to do a ghost right it wasn’t that basic so I would go into her closet and pull outfits that I felt like I could wear and so often that meant that I was taking her like negliges and silk lingerie and wearing those to be like Aphrodite or Cleopatra so I was very often Cleopatra and this is like I’m telling you I was Cleopatra in elementary school wearing my mom’s negligee to Summerfield Elementary School and it was directing the holiday holiday parade exactly and it’s like the only time I was ever allowed to wear makeup too was during Halloween and so I have thought about Cleopatra throughout my life and um so I’m taking us back to the before Christ era okay girl you’re really showing me up here already her lifetime is purported to be 70 BC to 30 BC my God talk about dirty exactly okay but what was interesting about this is that the Egyptians or at least Egyptian like royalty and Pharaohs were perhaps some of the cleanest because they were into all of the skincare and the perfumes and I mean I guess they’re covering the smell not necessarily cleaning well I thought that like yeah like this like Spa life was like the life yeah luxury like rich people were like rich people like rich people yeah and yeah yeah I mean this is also a time of like you know slavery ownership yeah there’s a lot of there are a lot of trade-offs to this lifestyle and I’m not choosing to go back to be Cleopatra well that’s not an option right you’re right you’re right I decided that I would go back to watch her skincare routine first of all I have to say there are so many questions I have about Cleopatra and just so you don’t feel like this is an intellectual like Endeavor I want you to know I was thinking very superficially like was she really the greatest beauty of the world yeah right they had like they just had like you know chalk and carvings like like right like how fine were those edges and also I found out that um like this whole idea of her being so seductive and beautiful was kind of like a campaign a smear campaign that the Romans put out there when they were trying to prove that she was this woman that turned Julius Caesar and Marc Anthony the Roman emperors against their own Empire like she was so beautiful that she made them oh it was loyal to evil Beauty it’s an evil Beauty right so I don’t know maybe she was that sounds like every woman in in power yeah 100 all those [ ] [ ] so intelligent yeah right so I’m like was she actually beautiful there was a description written of her that I found amazing I’m gonna read it to you they described her as quote alive rather than beautiful with a sensitive mouth firm chin ew liquid eyes broad forehead and a prominent nose Okay a couple of those things are descriptive or like you’re like okay I can get the forehead at the nose and put a liquid eye and a sensitive mouth is that just a thin lip ew I I don’t like that I don’t it sounds comfortable right her mouth yeah so I have no idea what she actually looked like but apparently she had a great like skincare regimen and so one of the one of the big things that Cleopatra would do and I want to I don’t want to watch her get into a bath okay but I wanna I wanna one of the things that she did was she would bathe in goat’s milk okay so every night she would bathe in goat’s milk because apparently lactic acid is good for your body and so I’m just curious like I want to know the whole process I want to know how many like how many goats milk how many days of goat’s milk is needed to fill a tub that has a woman in it right because she’s probably sitting in it the broad forehead in it with a broad forehead in it so you need like a few extra inches just to account for her okay so wait you show up you show up in yeah okay you say it say it where am I showing up yeah exactly like what’s your plan to get into Cleopatra’s like grouping of people like what is it oh honey I just I was like I’m there I show up I’m there I actually wasn’t envisioning myself as like a someone interacting with her I was just watching girl okay cool you’re just gonna be awesome maybe the walls of the maybe I was like a lady in waiting okay right you’re gonna work your way into that I’m gonna work your way I’m not trying to be deceptive I’m just trying to be an observer yeah okay so she had this Milk Bath that she used another interesting thing is that they use dead sea salts right like big big big uh surprise the Dead Sea is right there oh yeah that’s how everyone talks about the Dead Sea big surprise Dead Sea is right there this website that I found some of this information at would give like air quotes facts about what she would use and then they would end each section with get a 10 discount [Laughter] [Music] so it’s legit so it’s legit so this is all legit information yeah um she loved to use honey on her face okay bacterial properties I I’m watching because okay so by the way I’m going to my first um appointment with the esthetician this Wednesday I’ve never I’ve gotten like me I’ve maybe gotten one facial before but it was whatever like I don’t think I’ve ever yeah I haven’t this is my first time going and girl it is expensive yeah so I’m reading this really some things that Cleopatra does I’m like maybe I should just be taking a milk bath instead maybe that would be cheaper she would wash her face many times a day that’s not good that’s not good oil and chalk oh oil and lime oil and chalk oil and lime she would probably Am Pm it right I think she’s doing all of the right things I don’t know very much about what’s the right thing to do but you hear of people using like acidic things on their astringents and oils and things like that okay she would use something called you’ve probably probably heard of coal it’s like the basically the eyeliner of the past that’s still it’s black eyeliner um and I always thought it was just a makeup thing but apparently it also protects or protected the eye from the Sun it protected it from infections are you you said cold like cold k-o oh sorry k-o-h-l oh which by the by the way by the way yeah it actually hold before cold might actually be part coal too I might sure um and then you know she was into the natural nail polish which is henna you’ve seen henna yeah so she would dye her fingernails and her and her skin with henna and so she’s putting oils in she’s putting milk on her body and honey and I just I would love to go back and see how long does that process take right this is a 12-step routine specific like when you hear what I have to say you’re like you you’re like I’m there’s a purpose to why it’s a fact-finding mission how long do you think would you say like a week no no no no no I’m going back for hopefully this thing does not take more than an hour I’m going back for just a just that so how are you going to see the AM PM you gotta stay a day and what does she wear at night you gotta at least and let me tell you is the milk bath a daily routine or a weekly routine I’m gonna say weekly they said it was daily I would say we I would say weekly for like a run-of-the-mill rich person yeah but she was the [ ] Egyptian pharaoh that’s true they were rolling in it so I think she I think she was submerged okay so why only an hour was your like you’re are you scared to time travel I’m getting some hesitancy it’s I mean I told you I was I was scared but I also thought you know she’s a busy woman I don’t need to I don’t need to impose let me throw something on her eye cow I was going back for a reason I also find that I mean especially that time seems so so scary people were being killed left and right human life did not seem to be valued as much I mean she lived to 40 years old she killed she killed herself oh I didn’t know that yeah she killed herself because her husband or her lover Mark Anthony died and he thought she was dead so he killed himself it was like a Romeo and Juliet situation this dude’s name was Mark Anthony yeah he’s from Puerto Rico he’s an amazing singer yeah okay all right well I feel like that’s an hour to a day uh with Cleopatra yeah I do appreciate you bringing up I did care about the AM PM routine travel is so basic and I want to just say well because like I I didn’t give it much thought Beyond like that’d be cool uh and and my first like that’d be cool is um the 1950s and I would say like mid to late 1950s it’s so stylized I think that like a lot of my understanding in this particular decade does come from TV shows and movies I think that one movie I always think about and I think I even mentioned when I was talking about this this prompt is Pleasantville where you know they’re in the 90s and then they get sucked into this kind of 1950s sitcom world and the whole plot for our friends who haven’t seen it please go see it I don’t understand why you’re not it’s it’s um Reese Witherspoon Toby Maguire but you know from the 90s they’re like bringing color into Pleasantville so it goes from black and white to color and so would you when you go back to the 50s would you want to be there I guess you would be there in the colored version yeah I would not be there in the sitcom version um but also like it was it was like a decade of it was like an economic boom decade right so so World War II had just ended yes you have like the Red Scare of kind of the impending Cold War and everyone is you know anti-communism um but you also have this like Rebellion that’s going on you have like movies like Greece and The Outsiders kind of depict this like greasery World of leather jackets and then also like if you look at a movie like Back to the Future they go back to the 50s again because it’s this iconic period of time blast from the past with Brendan Fraser I think is like an early 60s thing but we’re talking about around the same time period and then of course on the lesbian movie side we have Carol one of the best lesbian movies of all time and then last night um I watched uh this movie called tell it to the bees that has Anna Paquin in it and it’s it’s also this 1950s gosh I love how so much of this is informed and I think this will be the case with your other History Month 100 it’s so informed by movies yeah well I love that it is interesting as we’re when I tried on the other time periods I want to go back to there’s more media that picture that depicts this 50s 60s time period and oftentimes I think we confuse uh mid late 50s with early 60s because you have like marvelous Miss maisel starts in in the late 50s and now I believe is in the early 60s Masters of Sex is in the 50s and then Mad Men is in the early 60s but it kind of feels very oh God as well the style of that era is magnificent yeah and it’s so like defined and specific and like other than that like little Loop into the early 60s like you don’t really confuse many time periods for like an iconic 50s time period um did you think about what you would wear well when you were back there I did for everything I was thinking about being a gay woman and also like limited periods of time obviously like I’d only go back and visit for a month um or or whatever but also like geographic location I thought about out for each thing so I think for this time period I would want to be kind of in the Hollywood LA area because it’s also when a lot of movie stars at the time now looking back like they were all freaking gay or having some kind of bisexual pansexual experience yeah um before it was like you know it became uh more like homophobic thing which they call the lavender scare which was happening at the same time that the red sphere was happening so like they had a lot of oh this actor’s a commie and you know and and then like this actor is gay and like that was a big thing is like keeping everything secret but like we talked about in the League of Their Own there were all of these secret gay bars um and it wasn’t as if like it didn’t exist or it wasn’t going on it was just like how people colored it but um there’s also this King princess song that was one of their first uh big hits called 1950s and the lyrics are I love it when we play 1950 so cold that your stairs about to kill me I’m surprised when you kiss me so like their whole song is about this idea of being out in public and like having this like cold separation because you have to yeah but this like sexual tension yes and then also like the actual media in the 1950s it was the first decade in which most household had television and towards the end of the decade is when they started to have color television but you had like I Love Lucy which is just like so iconic we grew up watching that oh yeah like at night oh absolutely um Leave it to Beaver which really depicts this like you know iconic Suburbia um and then Lassie which is also something that I grew up watching that kind of depicts like more of a more of a country um you know type of experience science dog life in the 90s you know they’re they’re all iconic and then you had in the late 50s like American Bandstand mid 50s you had Elvis like the birth of rock and roll this like rebellion and music kind of going from this more like jazz pop Place into this like you know youth disturbing um conservative you know ideals I guess um you had Audrey Hepburn Marilyn Monroe James Dean Frank Sinatra Marlon Brando um Dean Martin Grace Kelly that that’s why I think like being in Hollywood at that particular time would be awesome so you would go back as a person who interacts with these people yeah yeah okay mid-20s mid-20s Stevie but you didn’t tell me I need to know what would mid-20 Stevie be wearing are you wearing like the pleated 50s pant no no no I’m wearing I’m wearing a dress skirt situation I’m pointing in in the daytime I’m doing the keyboard and then at night yeah doing the king princess thing for sure okay also in the 50s that’s when the Space Race started and that’s when NASA was founded so you have this like you know big leap and scientific discovery going on that the whole world is tuned into and watching you have TV kind of for the first time and you like it feels like this energy of everything changing and also um pop art too that’s when pop art started so like this idea of popular culture being an art form which was so anti-establishment right also was concentrated around the 50s so it’s this big like revolutionary time period but then there’s also this like forever pressure of like being perfect and not straying from this like perfect family structure or Suburbia so which is interesting because in some ways you’re saying like you want to go to this this era of like it’s felt like like cultural opulence like all the CR like the stars and all this stuff is happening but it’s also the most tense right because you have to like hide yeah well part of me which is depicted more in Pleasantville is like in the 50s that’s when Suburbia became a thing like that’s when people were going out to the suburbs and like okay you know you have this like slower life this Family Focus you have like most meals are that whole like the protein the vegetable the starch the women stay at home in the kitchen like there’s all these like this is how you are perfect this is how you’re clean this is how your clothes are supposed to look Etc and I have this stupid like that seems great to me but then if you take all that and you put it in Hollywood in this place where also like the good stuff was going on seems even better yes that’s that’s Perfection um so I was like damn that would be a good month like that would be a good month what I’m hearing is you need a break and Cassie needs to yeah oh yeah we’re talking let you live that life yeah oh yeah yeah I didn’t I think that there’s like a hall pass scenario when it comes to time travel too oh yeah and also like let’s talk about having a Milkman that would be awesome like you just have like a daily opportunity I don’t even like milk but I like the idea of having a Milkman I assumed that when you said you want a Milkman you would take it making the sexual because normally you do I thought so Milkman are you going back is it like a milk woman that’s coming to you no I’m going back in time and I’m gonna become straight and single only oh God if oh God straight and single yeah also just to touch a little bit on Race as well like the 50s was also when like in mainstream Americana the discussion about like anti-segregation was on like a daily basis everywhere in America so like brown V Board of Education was 1954. Rosa Parks was 1955. so it wasn’t like those things weren’t being discussed like that was a really big Crux in the Civil Rights Movement so again it’s like you I would think that being in Los Angeles you you’re surrounded by people who have the same kind of ideals kind of like fighting against the establishment and that in that particular way but anyway it’s just so I mean the 50s that’s so cool man that was a great that was a great moment in time to go back to for one month yeah for one month for only for one month yes well my next one uh comes comes at a good time you set me up well because my next moment in history is based in the city where I spend a lot of time as well at Washington DC I want to be a person in the crowd for MLK’s iconic I Have a Dream speech man one up to me again you know again fun and I probably could hook up with secret gay celebrities we just we just thought I thought in terms of days and events and you thought in terms of periods of time sure it’s just a different approach so I I have gone by the Lincoln Memorial so many times it’s Majestic and just Grand on its own but to be there when it was filled with people listening to MLK I thought would be so incredible so he gave the speech in August end of August 1963 in Washington and it happened um it was like the last speech there were 10 speeches that day as part of something called the March on Washington for jobs and freedom 10 speeches that day by different civil rights activists members of uh various like religious sex from there was like a really famous Jewish rabbi who spoke right before MLK Jewish rabbi nobody remembers his speech though because MLK MLK really freaking stole the show so you’d get there after the rabbi’s speech I’d want to be there for the whole thing because I think context is important but the speech was um the details around that day were really interesting I didn’t know about them until I did a little bit of research I just like the idea that I was like and let me read let me read some King princess lyrics and you’re like of course we’ve got we’ve got speaking of King speaking with King we’re just going to take this to the to a different different place um so as you were saying right in the 50s there was all of you know all of this kind of there was tons of racial tension and in the 1960s you see it coming to a head and not I mean it’s coming to a head in the 60s because uh for months they are planning this March on Washington which many people were worried many white people were worried that it was going to be this violent demonstration right even like the Kennedy administration like the FBI was watching out for tons of people they thought this could be like really dangerous of course it wasn’t people were they spent weeks getting themselves to Washington DC so just as a little bit of context there were 250 000 people in the crowd that day like that’s a lot of people now yeah but when I think about people moving around like trying to get around back then that’s why it took them like weeks or months to get themselves to Washington DC so the effort of it I didn’t really think about what I be a person that was spending weeks or months getting there I was really thinking about myself showing up yeah I was just in the crowd right okay so the speech is televised it’s on the the only or the three major networks at that time were CBS NBC and ABC right so it’s televised to you know hundreds of thousands of more people and right before uh all of the speeches were about to start the sound they’ve realized that the sound system this very expensive sound system that they had installed had been sabotaged somebody had [ ] with the sound and you’re taking me back to my last couple weeks yep and the name of the sound company was moment and but you know the Attorney General at the time was able to have it you know get some engineers in and have it fixed so that they could everybody could hear this speech and each person had seven minutes you said everybody could hear this [ ] oh [Laughter] um okay so there are um so every person has about seven minutes to give their speech Dr King’s Speech was about 16 minutes long and it was 16 minutes long because I mean he was like a Baptist preacher is it a preacher or Minister a Baptist man I don’t I don’t ever know the designation and the wrong person he was a Baptist Rabbi and at the near the end of his prepared remarks it’s rumored that Mahalia Jackson who was this famous gospel singer of the time yelled at him in the crowd and was like tell them about the dream tell them about the dream Martin really oh I just get chills yeah I got chills too only on the right side of my body so I really might have to check that out later I’m on the front too I’m on the front too um and she knows about the dream because months earlier he had given a speech that kind of referenced the dream before so it wasn’t all new but she was like tell them about this thing it’s so effective and apparently his advisors had told him let’s not reuse that material basically ditch the dream ditch the dream and talk about something new his advisor said ditch the dream let’s do something else but she was like no Martin do tell them about the dream and so he finishes prepared remarks and then he starts speaking extemporaneously okay and that’s when like the I Have a Dream part of the speech comes it almost wasn’t it almost wasn’t shared you could you could stand by her in the crowd you could that that that could be actually yes yes yeah because I would if I heard her saying that I’d be like shh girl don’t distract him God you’re so embarrassing yeah and then he would do it and be like no girl you were actually you were right you were right I can just see you like time traveling you have your iPhone out like it’s like have you seen those like time traveler photos where they’re like they take an old photo from history and they like Circle someone in the background they’re like that’s an iPhone I’ll just record this one for myself yeah you would hear [Laughter] is on and you know you know that um I really love to know about smells and and tastes what are you what are you tasting here no I didn’t I find anything I could taste I looked but I did look up like it’s end of August oh in DC it’s nasty it is a nasty time of day and so apparently on August 28th 1963 it was a actually kind of a normal set normal day it wasn’t too it wasn’t too humid oh you looked at the weather oh yeah that’s awesome I looked at the weather you’re like if I’m in a time travel the weather’s gotta be nice I don’t care if it’s his speech do I need dress pads do I need what kind of antiperspirant are we working with and by the way for Cleopatra it was obvious that like I had no control over what I was gonna do so for this one for 1963 apparently was it was kind of a normal hot day but because there were over 250 000 people there are it created an even hotter more humid environment so people they’re pictures of people like putting their feet in the reflecting pool in front of the Lincoln Memorial like trying to cool themselves off so you’re gonna wear flip-flops yeah well okay well this is the last thing I’ll say about this time you just said that like you know people looked super cool and very distinct people were dressed up yeah right they weren’t casual they were wearing suits they were wearing dresses and they were either doing that because this was like a you know people cared about what they looked like especially at this March or because back then you really couldn’t be casual there were kind of just two modes you know or what what looks like casual to them still looks dressed up to us in this age I I think it was it was the first time also of like commercial Jet Airlines was around that time period and you know the people like used to get dressed up to go on a flight like people used to look nice to go on a flight yeah I think it’s that same mentality as like you you look nice for an event that you’re forever too yeah if it’s hot it doesn’t matter it’s a jacket and tie type of situation yeah yeah so 1963. that’s a good one okay yeah that’s awesome so you would just to clarify it would just be for that it was a day it was a day you’re going back for sure very short period of time efficiently yeah you know I was like he is a month too long in the 50s like am I gonna get too attached but you know I think you could always choose to stay longer I thought a month was a nice period of time you establish yourself yeah you make a couple friends yeah you make a couple of friends you get to um the hot bisexual actresses of the time and then you’re good and you’re good yeah [Music] okay my next one is also just about having fun uh and it is the 1920s The Roaring Twenties ooh yes specifically New York City and specifically the holiday time is when I would be going so I’m going for like a Thanksgiving through Christmas time New York City are you there for the parade I’m there for the parade which started 1924 was the first Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade look it’s like you’re nodding as if you knew that’s correct that is correct it was nice are you there for the first or for the third I’m gonna wait a little bit yeah I’m going to work out the Kinks yeah the 1920s again were like post-world War here were pretty Great Depression so we’re in like a very specific period of time the height of wastefulness yeah I think I would go for like uh 1926 27 okay it’s also prohibition time but there’s a [ ] ton of speakeasies and also again it’s this time of rebellion because that’s when you have like the flapper and you know the flapper really represented like this woman who was going like anti um you know yeah traditional tropes like she was smoking she was drinking she had a short haircut she was wearing like skimpier clothing and yeah it was also like the big push of the feminist movement because women had just gained the right to vote and so there was this like Groundswell also it was a big time for Harlem and Greenwich Village when it comes to uh people of color and gay people and there was this like big um I don’t want to say Renaissance but like it was also the Jazz Age as well and 35 of the population in New York were all immigrants so it was this like wow really big Melting Pot of all these new ideas all these new cultures and it was also a short period of time in which of course again there are gay people always but there was like a celebrated um uh it wasn’t like drag per se um it was called the pansy craze and that was more like in like 1930 but there was this like it was still this underground for gays world but it was like really awesome like masquerade balls with like thousands of people and costumes drag shows the Speakeasy thing because it was already behind the scenes you there’s more opportunity for speakeasies only for gay people um and so you had this like again this energy of newness and then also on the like more Square side it was also the best time for like the Yankees in the World Series and Babe Ruth and and just like sports in general and that’s when like Baseball fans yeah and like Nathan’s Hot Dog no just wait are you actually a baseball fan I’m not a baseball fan so much it’s like um I I you know I’ll go to a game Spirit like you like the spirit of the game yeah I like the spirit of the game um so all this like it was like such a prime time for New York City specifically and it was also pre-television it was all like whatever was on the radio was like the coolest thing so Jazz was was really big in the art scene Art Deco was like the architecture of choice I don’t know it just seems like there’s like a lot going on um but this is the one that I was like I would think that there were more TV shows depicting The Roaring 20s because it was such a funny time but um Boardwalk Empire you know is a big one Chicago um American Horror Story Hotel those are all in this this particular world but yeah I’m gonna stay for for the holidays I thought you were gonna say The Great Gatsby movie great gaps Gatsby that gapsby movie was really it’s like when I think about grapefruit uh I always have to question if it’s grapefruit or grapefruit and then I’m like no it’s great that’s a great fruit that’s probably like a a marketing slogan on the floor somewhere yeah grapefruit is grapefruit yeah the board the American Board of uh grapefruit Farmers yes but yeah I thought that would be so fun it would be so fun I The Great Gatsby movie for me was like that is one of the most fun movies I’ve seen I’m going for a good time you know well speaking of good times do I have a good time for you I’m taking you forward we’re fast forward okay okay to the 1970s okay okay [Music] I’m so glad I thought for a moment like were we gonna pick some of the same things but the answer is no and no yeah okay tell me what historic memorable day in the 70s also like a party and I’m taking you to a three-day period not a one hour wow okay so we’re going to Timber it’s a long weekend October 12th through October 16 1971. this is the 2500 Year celebration of the Persian Empire that was hosted by the Shah of Iran all right I have been to a lot of weddings I’ve been to a lot of amazing Weddings But you know you can always do better and I felt like this was the party of the Century I wanted to be a part I wanted to be a part of it and it’s a little bit contentious because I’ll say from the start it’s contentious because the Shah of Iran is no longer in power he fled the country and many people say that this party it was so opulent so ostentatious it’s like the perfect encapsulation of him being out of touch with the reality the economic and political reality of Iran so there’s a really fun party oh this party was rumored to be anywhere from like 22 million dollars to two billion dollars I don’t even understand what you like what that yeah like what did the party have like what did he spend the money on yeah yeah a lot of drugs you know I did not find any information about drugs but that had to have been I bet there was a lot of seven there yeah some LSD situation okay so this was like the the party of the century it might still be like the biggest party ever recorded like most expensive party ever but it celebrated like I said the 2500th anniversary of the Persian Empire and it was located it was this big like tent city that they built in the desert in the south of Iran in a place called persepolis which is the seat which was like the seat of the Persian Empire so if you go there today you see all of these um like stone structures that are remaining from the actual Palace that was there but it was bombed or not bombed that’s it was bombed it’s two it’s two technologically advanced it was like burnt down by Alexander the Great burning man yeah it’s like a Luxe Burning Man where you’re not bartering because everything’s everything’s provided and so anyway they built this tent city um there were 500 guests not everyone stayed there but they they created 50 at least 50 um cabin tents right it’s like glamping okay and each of these tents uh they were pre-fabricated Apartments basically they were too bad too bath there was an office there was a living room that could fit 12 people in it because you know people want to just like socialize a little bit after the party in an intimate setting one of the presents that they gave the guests was a customized portrait of that head of state put onto a silk carpet a customized yeah like they made it so Persian carpets silk carpets are like known um to be one of oh it was Iran’s greatest exports but it was made of their face oh the guests face okay okay the head of state that was staying there yeah it was not like a and then they had like they they um this was a weird part of it right so this was a celebration of the Persian Empire but like all of the food all of the drink was French or european so I think part of the crazy cost of it was they imported everything um at the time the number one restaurant in the world was this place called maxims in Paris okay and they shut that restaurant down for two weeks which was you know unheard of then and they took the entire staff and the chef to Iran to create the menu and and you know the the meals and so you know they’re serving like peacock and duck and the only thing that was from Iran was the caviar everything else was imported which was a little bit ridiculous because Iran’s known for fantastic food but you know whatever peacock peacock right what do you think the peacock tastes like let me you think it’s more turkey or chicken I’m gonna say more like turkey well it it tastes like chicken some claim that once brined the meat will taste like a turkey While others will compare the meat to a guinea fowl never tried a guinea fowl huh oh set some context for this time it was a whole era of like people versus Power so at that time Mao was the leader in China Franco was the dictator in Spain Nixon was just about to Watergate so like it wasn’t as a verb yes it was an intense time like you know the Socialists and and and I think one of the one of the reasons the shop put on this big party was he was trying to contrast kind of the public image of Iran at that point was becoming about socialists and religious clerics who were trying to take over the monarchy and he was trying to cement it as like you know modern modern Renaissance kind of country he was doing the whole like he was trying like the other moms yeah I do not like the other bobs and so anyway he hired all of these French Architects and decorators and all of that he was obsessed with a French I want to be at this party because even though it represents maybe some some ish bad things I want to be there I want to begin even though everyone there is probably shitty they did have peacock they had peacock and they had a nice ass tent I would love to go camping and not be like oh yeah totally obliterated by the end have a rug of your face man I I don’t know if like we never talked about the rules of time travel like can you put stuff in your can you keep it yeah like can you roll up that rug bring it back you know I think yes I think you can but I think you have to accept that it’s going to change it’s going to age the distance of time that you go oh well you know vintage is really an okay yeah I think that’s a good call yeah so like how would you work your way onto that invite list I would I would definitely be a monarch or a head of state I’m not going as a helper got it no because the the accounts of like what it felt like to be a staff member there are terrible it was like Yelp reviews they’re like some of the people that were there I think recently only recently died it was just like terrible conditions they were working a 500 person party like a three day 24 hours a day I found a person party of like the most demanding terrible people in the world so yeah it’s gonna be tough that that’s a good one I was contemplating my like alt and I guess in fourth place I was thinking maybe about like the wild west like 1890s period of time very dangerous time dangerous but also dirty to your point and like I was thinking like what would I do when I get there like play with guns so boring and I can’t like even get like a prostitute because I’m a 25 year old woman like there’s nothing for me to do you know really that wasn’t a I feel like you could have I guess I could have I could have gone and gotten you could have gone into a brothel yeah you could have infiltrated a brothel yeah and had easy access yeah all the time well okay so what are you gonna do instead well interestingly enough the the like one show that came to mind when I was contemplating the wild west which has the desert tide to what you were just talking about is um Westworld I actually I chose the other side of Westworld because I too was like do I even go to the Future it sounds terrible but I convinced myself that I’m only there for a short period of time my safety in my mind is insured I’m just there to like check things out and also I contemplated picking a year that like I certainly won’t live to like I already know we’re [ ] and like I know that like you know when we die I wrote down we’ll probably die in like 2080 ish like around around that time of the two like yeah like yeah yeah yeah yeah um not us as like a human population um Logan will have like 10 more years yeah you think that 40 years from now we’re gonna be dead that’s 60 years 60 years from now oh sorry 60 years from now we’re going to be um yeah probably maybe a little bit longer but I was playing it safe with the 2080. um but let’s say okay you know we’re mid 90s we’re mid 90s that point like it’s not great it’s just not good you know yeah it’s not a good life but so I was thinking like if someone were to time travel from 150 years ago to now that would kind of be like the 1880 to now yes like that would be like whoa like I mean sure you know we are the Wild West yeah so then I was like okay now take that 150-ish years and that’s when I would want to travel to get that same kind of whoa like fish out of water like this is completely different so like we’re talking like 2170 ish okay so that’s my chosen third destination is that we’re going 150-ish years into the future and everything’s gonna be completely different and so I tried to Google like what are like you know scientific predictions uh for the future I wouldn’t recommend it because like it’s pretty bleak like like I of course like with climate change New Orleans won’t be there anymore Miami won’t be any there anymore I’m sure Sandy L.A such a shame Nothing’s Gonna yeah like we’re we’re moving inwards um by that point but also we’re moving upwards so a lot of people think that um because of the rising water we’re going to start investing in these like you know above ground yeah um situations and then also this like jetson-esque idea of like floating cities as well which you know uh yeah I believe it when I see it when I when I go there um but then also like space travel like commercial space travel is going to be you know really happen but then there’s also some scientists that think that we’re gonna have a um elevator into space that we use like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory yeah which I can’t completely grasp my head around but um yeah do you think your ears like they would have done something so your ears don’t pop as much well so we won’t have any like external computers personal computers and cell phones in the same way it’s all going to be neural implants oh so like the way that we communicate also they think that like instead of Googling something you’re just gonna know it like so we’re gonna become this like super computer machine yeah because if you think about it like if you have this implant that kind of just like gives you the answer to something before you know as if you’re doing a very quick Google search and then the information is going into your head like that’s where it’s going there’s also like surprisingly I thought that there was going to be this whole like the robots take over and there’s like a war between the robots and and you know and Ai and humans but there’s actually like a nice Outlook from the majority of articles that I read that like were going to well it’s not really a nice Outlook per se but like we’re going to merge closer together so it’s not so much that like we’re gonna get in this like Epic World War with AI or robots so much as like we’re going to become them in a lot of ways okay have you ever seen um Gattaca the movie Gattaca no highly recommend it’s uh Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman it takes place in the future I don’t know what year it takes place it could have it was it was it came out in the nine it probably is like now 22. yeah exactly but in this future they’ve made so much um there have been so many advancements in like the biological medical industry that essentially it plays around with this idea of eugenics that people can pick and choose their unborn children like like eyesight making sure their eyesight is perfect and like they’re the smartest they can be in like all these choices that you make before you have a kid so your kid comes out and is like perfect in every possible way and the story the protagonist um their parents chose not to do that so he’s like living in the world where he is imperfect and trying to fit into a world of like that’s like a purple section but they say that like that is very much the way that we’re going with all the the medical and biological I mean right now you can do a lot of that and that we our lifespans will will practically double by that time period so we’ll you’ll at least live to be 150 years old but between 150 and 200 years old fascinating I like the idea of having that kind of fish out of water experience where you go somewhere and you’re like what yeah and so that’s why I was like I gotta go I gotta go that far into the future and if it’s really Bleak and and terrible then like sucks for you but I’m gonna die in 2080 so um they’re gonna play this clip at my funeral she predicted her own death I like it I like that I like that one a lot did you ever have when you were doing these historical whatever moments that you like look down at your body to see what it was like did I ever look down at my crotch when I was pretend time traveling no honey I said I said body but if your crotch is large enough to see from oh I got a large crotch one thing everyone knows about me BCD big crotch energy I guess the student could stand for something else oh my gosh speaking of C I had a moment thinking about little coochies this weekend where I was wearing high-waisted pants and the inseam of these jeans is is kind of thick so when you sit down it camel toe honestly didn’t make a camel toe because it was a thick seam it just pinched it just went up against my coochie and I thought this is the first time in my life where I thought huh maybe that’s why guys open their legs so much when they’re sitting down maybe it’s because the seam of their pants is pushing up against their junk and it was the first time I empathized empathized with a man because I had to open my legs to sit comfortably I had to sit and look like a wild wild west cowboy Oh in order to comfortably fit like I like to make it known about my big Gucci energy wait so I am speaking of big coochies when when Zach told you all three of his yeah in the future did he have specific like years that he marked or no I did I didn’t once he said that I was like no but he he believes that we’re going to live much longer yeah that we’re going to live longer healthier lives too yeah right so he’s not worried about this like I don’t he’s just not worried about death or maybe he doesn’t care about the death and destruction he’s just more curious about what it looks like that’s where I am I’ll report back okay that’s that’ll be on the the scene season three okay well I guess we both know where we’re time traveling if we get that time travel Genie in a Bottle to come and ask us where we want to go uh did you have any awkward moments this week well I had a terrifying moment that I started with so I’m Gonna Let You lets you round us off with a strong strong the setup’s bad because surprisingly there weren’t a lot of awkward moments in my life but I will set perhaps the start of a mystery series that maybe at the end of next year season will have solved um we’re back to my neighborhood the only place I go and um I there’s several uh Trail Journeys and walks that I take that have different nicknames that only Cassie and I use that no one else would understand what we’re saying but one of them is called the water fountain walk because at a certain point uh there’s a nice elderly woman who has taken like a bird feeder and planted a bunch of really beautiful plants on it and it’s at the corner so like the water walk is like you go to that corner and then you come back and on this path there is a Prius that’s always parked on the right side of the road and on the hood or I guess like it’s the hood to windshield it’s like where are the windshield crevices it’s a Crest yes yeah there’s always a sealed plastic bag and the plastic bag changes from time to time but is it it is opaque so you cannot see what’s inside of the plastic bag I feel like it’s a joint no no no this is like this is Grocery Store bag size this is like packed a lunch for myself size bag the changes that lives here sometimes and and this is only sometimes if the Prius is not there you can see the bag on the like side of the road like and then sometimes it’s not there but whenever the Prius is there there’s always a bat is there a house next to this Prius yes I believe the owner of the Prius does live in not the home across the street and here’s the thing my curiosity is very peaked but I don’t know if I can overcome like opening the bag in the presence of the owner because also like there’s a lot of windows to this to this house and I don’t know I have some theories about what the bag is like part of me just thinks yeah what do you think I think part of me thinks it’s a social experiment in which like this woman sits and watches to see if someone’s gonna open the bag on her Prius because at first I was like is she leaving something in this bag for someone else like a key for something I don’t know but now since it’s always there and it sometimes changes the bag itself changes I just have no freaking idea I have an idea okay I have one idea of what it could be and I have an idea for what you could do to figure out what it is the idea for what it is is maybe she’s leaving like some lunch for a local vagrant you know like she’s trying to be a good Community member and leaving leaving a little something I just don’t buy it and also with the with the heat wave I mean come on what is this do you want me to tell you what I think you should you could do yes and the reason I’m introducing it in this segment is because I have a feeling that what I need to do is going to result in an awkward moment because I I don’t like I’ve gotta open it right well no it’s gonna be an awkward moment I think because it’s going to involve social interaction but Social Services okay I think what you could do is go to the front of the house ring the doorbell and it’s it’s up a mount it’s up a hill by the way like this would be like yeah yeah yeah so okay continue okay okay but you go up the hill you ring it let’s assume she opens if she doesn’t you need to come back another day okay gotta make contact and say hey is the woman here hey uh I noticed a plastic bag on top of the car do you want me to bring that up for you I I just in case do you want me to bring that up for you I was worried you left it on your windshield at which point they will be mysterious and they will say no please leave it there and not say anything else or more likely they’ll be like no that’s four that’s lunch for you can leave it yeah oh my God I think I’ve set myself up for this and you have to end it makes you you don’t look you don’t come off looking weird at all you come off looking like you’re a good neighbor I know for five years I’ve walked past this bad you leave that leave that point out of the little speech you know what I’m thinking is I can get Cassie to do this Cassie would love to she would love to do it okay I am so I really want to know what’s in there right isn’t yours what shape is it what shape it’s not a um it’s it’s a more it’s like a it’s not there’s not like a box in it or something it’s like Blobby yeah it’s blob I was thinking was like the shape of a sub it’s always a sub yeah oh no just leave that down here down there that 12 inch or that foot long yeah I love that I can’t wait to find out what Cassie learns the mystery continues and uh hopefully you will hear more on October 14th when we yes return back guys we’re gonna miss you we’re gonna miss you and I miss you uh but appreciate you going back to the library just leave us some reviews and stuff do other things at us let us know
