you look pretty perked up too so oh okay I look pretty perked up that’s great I’m perked up cuz uh we’ll get into it but I I got some really good friends of mine but they’re I see that where I we try to promote and uhhuh near uh shag dance national champions and but Jackie W Jackie won more time than Charlie but that that don’t make no difference okay so we got we got some shag champions in our midst today I am honored but we are doing this to because uh dispatches has such a younger audience that we want to get them involved and see and they’ll see a little bit of what Charlie and Jackie do and and maybe get them to dancing especially if they live close around down here that’s anywhere so so uh Charlie and Jackie good to meet you to nice to meet you now are y’all just uh are you dance Partners or are you more than that more than that I mean I’m happy to say I’m happy to say they’re married yeah how much more than years we don’t have the same last name because I wouldn’t change mine when we got married that’s right okay yeah we’ve been married 35 years oh that but she she didn’t take your last name uh he didn’t take mine either okay that’s good that’s I think that’s I think I think this is where we need to start the conversation you know Dad how do you feel about uh people people taking last names because you you’ve been throwing yours around for years well I I I’ve done I’ve done it so many times I just think it’s normal but but I there’s probably some of my exes that wish they hadn’t have took my last name and kept theirs so they would had to had to change it back so but I I assume Jackie this is because you you’re a you’re a Dynamo on the dance floor and you’re known as Jackie McGee so you can’t you can’t be it’s branding well it it it was a little bit of that we had dated about nine years and had built our reputation under those names but also um I had I was teaching in Atlanta and it was under Jackie McGee with a lot of signage and we had a studio and it was just the cost of it we thought well we’ll change it later and then we never did and it just became Charlie and Jackie and we lost the last names okay completely so our professional names are just Charlie and Jackie okay now and I didn’t I wasn’t the one who brought this up Charlie’s the one who brought this up oh no yes he did yes you did Charlie first word out of your mouth was I’m Charlie and Jackie does not share my last name I did bring you have to be careful when you talk to him he remembers everything he remembers everything he’s a lot younger than we yes that would be correct well guys that ain’t saying much except for you Jackie thank you you’re young you you might be younger than me no I don’t think so but thank anyway all right what do you want to keep talking about um the merits of having keeping your own last name or y’all want to talk shagging let’s talk shag what about you Dad you sure you don’t want to dig dig up some more dirt no I I I didn’t know I I’m through shoveling I’m through shoveling let’s get into the I think Charlie’s a little he’s a little sore about it Dad look at it he got over he got I got over all right you got over I’m good with it now all right I’m not going to I’m not going to give you a hard time anymore I I am officially fine with people having whatever last name they want I’m also officially fine with anybody partnering up with anybody they want as long as the that person on the other end wants to partner up with them you want to talk about that or you want to talk about shag good let’s talk about go with shag all right shagging now shagging um we have established early on in uh the history of dispatches from Myrtle Beach we had to get over the the the terminology in like some of the First episodes but there’s always new people joining so we really do need to explain what shagging is not well we call Carolina let we call it Carolina shag uh to give to specify that it is from a region of the Carolinas and it is a dance and we make sure everybody knows it is a dance yeah and uh it’s part of the Swing world uh swing covers a lot of different dances right you dance with swing and you can you can shag with different people and both Partners know that you can swing over and shag with somebody else and you don’t feel threatened it’s kind of like not it’s like having different last names you don’t have to be threatened no but so we’re talking about shagging and Swinging dad shag dance and swing that yeah swing dance not swinging it’s not swinging okay shag shag is a member M of the Swing family which covers West Coast which they do out in California uh Lindy Hop Jitterbug and shag is just the Carolina version okay the Southerns is there a sexual connotation to Jitterbug because I could try to make some jokes about that too but I don’t think there are uh uh Louis gazar in Atlanta who was a writer said that shagun was like doing Jitterbug on vume yeah okay smooth valum but okay so you are you are dancing shag Champions like how to like quantify this like have you won awards well yes they had a national shag dance Championship here for 41 years now uh we won nine years in a row and then she won another year uh we had won a lot of local contests that we had for 12 13 years uh we won the US Open in California what uh where what was open swing at the Disneyland Hotel and so we’ve won a fair number so you’re tra you’re traveling all over win like just shoveling in the awards into the back of your your your bus or whatever do you have a bus well you know honestly we started in the Carolinas and we danced for 11 10 11 years here and uh we were encouraged by some really great swing dancers to venture out and let other people see what our form of swing our form of dance and um we went to California the US Open and it was a wonderful experience and for the next 10 years we traveled over showing what we did to people in other areas okay so Dad have you witnessed them in action absolutely describe what happens like what’s what’s the magic that these two have it makes me wish that I could dance that good so that much better than you oh well on a scale of 1 to 10 i’ would be about a two or a three and they’d be a 12 oh wow but Dad you I mean you do shag a lot so it’s not like you don’t practice we Dan son well is there is there some sort of a glass ceiling that you’re that you’re busting up against here no I don’t I I think if uh Nancy and I if I’d quit working so much okay and I could go back and be down there and take some more lessons and learn some more stuff uh I could probably move on up to a seven or eight or something but you know that prob be about it oh no but what are what DB what are they doing that like are are they throwing each other around cuz like I’ve I’ve seen some extreme swinging dancing that’s Lindy Hop Lindy Hop or rock and roll that’s a that’s throwing throwing people around we don’t Ariel we don’t do aial and shag okay well then then what make what I mean how do you what’s the key to winning then if you can’t throw Charlie around I can’t pick him up anymore uh it it it’s all about footwork and and the in the South it was it became more about what the music uh the rhythm of blues and gospel really interpreted what people did and they slowed it down and became a about a lot of footwork where Lindy it came from Lindy and Jitterbug and that was a lot of U fast moving Pace Aerials very uh very what active very uh energetic where somebody could get hurt yes yes what kind of injuries are you going to get shagging bad knees bad shoulders oh God knees over time you can have shoulder injuries leg injuries uh when I do my splits and go pull a hamstring I don’t do those anymore though you used to do splits but you don’t anymore oh I I W hey I I watched him when I pulled up their website the other night and watched him and man I mean he got he was right down on the floor and Jackie let me know that she pulled him back up every time when my hair was dark idea now that it’s gray I don’t do do we have I want to do we have footage Logan of them I want to see we do oh yes from 1984 oh so set this so 1984 I think that was after the first Nationals this yeah this is a show that you’ve been on Before Good Morning America okay have I been on that all right I said take 10 so y’all been trying nine more times oh okay why I just see feet so I don’t know whose feet these are these your feet yes that’s y’all uhhuh oh hi I’m Charlie wble with the national shag championships in mtle Beach South Carolina Good Morning America Good Morning America oh right see I remember that was part of like the inspiration for uh good mythical morning was people saying Good Morning America at the end of the show we have like we have fans submit videos and it’s because I grew up watching Good Morning America and they would always they would have an on location blah blah blah blah blah Good Morning America and um wow you guys got to do that I mean I know that you you’re like multiple time over shag Champions but the fact that you got to say Good Morning America on Good Morning America is also pretty impressive to me well there’s a little story behind that that was one of the uh I think the very first Nationals we won and uh I couldn’t get good morning America out for some reason what do you and so they they didn’t mik me they miked only Charlie they put the mic on me so that somebody would get Good Morning America out when they stopped so we finally did enough cuts that they got it out and then uh several maybe a month later we were out on the beach doing the Carolina uh good morning uh what it was today’s show in Beach and you’re supposed to be welcome to the day show well we got ready and stopped and finally Jackie says Good Morning America finally got it out finally came out show yeah yep uh and um but that but that was back during the national shag dance championships and and uh Barry thean who who ran that uh did great uh did a lot of things to promote the dance and one of them was getting us to have the opportunity to do the intro to very fortunate to do a lot of national keep this thing in the drawer and then look at this this is just this is a if you’re just listening this is a wrist brace I have uh I’ve got a nagging injury and um well oh over this past weekend I uh I injured it again literally shagging like my form of shagging I’m just going to be honest I’m serious I I got a little uh I don’t know I was we were we were I was having an Amorous moment well it was longer than a moment and I didn’t and um now he’s bragging yeah I’m not yeah okay I can brag a little bit I’m trying to impress my dad and I didn’t realize until afterward that uh boy I’d really I’d really shagged up my my wrist these things can happen you know I’m 46 I’m getting getting I’m getting into I’m getting into the point where before I shag I have to get down and do some stretches or something I got to really think about what you know like what the limitations of my of my body I mean it was it Dad I mean is this this is not something that you warned me about oh no I I didn’t know you could uh I don’t know how how you hurt your wrist shagging that’s are you you want me to tell you yeah oh absolutely okay I’ll tell you Charlie and Jackie want to know so they can Jackie people that take Les take lessons from them maybe didn’t tell them so make sure it never happens to me yeah well I me I was I was supporting my own weight on my hands you know I was I have my wrist bent back like this on on the shagging surface you know what I’m saying on the D let’s just say that on the Dance Floor I was down I was down on the Dance Floor uh shagging and I I had to you know it was it was it wasn’t a one and da type thing it was just like I was saying earlier I mean it was after a while the The Strain in my wrist was just too much other things tot totally fine every everything that I thought mattered totally good but it turns out the wrist is a very uh important component of the of of the type of shagging that I do I don’t know how important like supporting your own weight and like uh being on your wrist is for uh for YouTube but um for me I I’ve learned to I had to start I had to after subsequent shagging sessions I had to figure out how to alter my my dance moves drastically and my partner my partner was like we’ to do watch out for your wrist now and I’m like well we I I don’t want you to be thinking about that I got this and then and then the next day and then look at this look at this see this is my pants and then look what’s it I got a damn knee brace knee brace too and that didn’t happen till 2 Days Later I’m I’m limping and it’s like let me tell you I I don’t know if Calis will help with that he might better try another dance yeah you yeah you need to try yeah you need to switch curriculums Dancing Yeah I can’t I can’t give it up I mean y’all y’all know that y’all going to give up shagging how old are you going to be when you give up shagging never going to stop exactly exactly there’s no negotiation it’s not it’s not on the table that would be like people keep asking me well when are you going to retire and I said well most time I tell them probably when you drop me down in the box right people ask me when I’m going to retire and I say when am I going to start working well this is it is this what you’re a lot is this what you guys had in mind when Dad invited you to come here I’m sorry really had no idea we had no idea really had no idea it wait we’re we’re trying to get we’re trying to make it appealing to the younger people I think I think that both versions of shagging are important and one can lead to the other am I right absolutely see there you go there you go there’s a there’s an intimacy to dance that you got to be on the same page and like you’re locking eyes and and you’re shuffling feet and you’re like you’re getting your whole body into it and when you’re National shag Champions and go to London you’re very popular you know that oh very popular so where y’all going next you’re still competing no we we’re not competing anymore we uh we stopped a couple of years ago but we do teach we still travel we still teach around the country whenever we can so we we’re still very involved they were on the cruise we were on with Jim quick and they talked lessons several times on the cruise to people so we do more teaching than we do competing right gotcha I’m going ask Charlie and Jack Charlie told me this one time but Charlie and Jackie traveled with Zack Brown is that right with what was the name of the song oh love song oh love song Hold Up and love song and they got to dance on stage when Zach played this song ah okay yeah you told me that and and Charlie told me he said they have he he had been kind of nervous and a lot of things he said but when when you dance in front of what was it 50 yeah it went so much it was big big audiences but when the guy that’s doing the song is standing there right beside you you don’t want to mess it up so that that was a it was a great experience though absolutely like tens of thousands of people yeah yeah yeah we went we went to three of his concerts yeah we we just did uh the last leg of his concerts uh he asked us to come dance great opportunity to present the dance but it was just such a privilege to dance in a venue like that uh with a great artist like Zack Brown that’s cool that’s cool and so how young are the people that you get that are getting into the uh into the world of shaging well we have all age groups we have uh we have Juniors we have anywhere from five five years old competing uh we have different divisions so we’ve got uh two age group groups up to 21 and then anything after that so we’ve got the whole spectrum of course we have older people more now than we’ve ever had because they were teenagers when they started but now we’re we’re working on our third and fourth generations and a lot of people retire and and have raised kids and worked and whatever and they come down here or they just retire in general they’re looking for something to do and they found is something they can do together and have a great time yeah so you’ve got the young Spectrum coming up and then you got the older people who were not involved in it that are are getting involved in and it is good exercise it is absolutely good way to meet people a good way to get out get off the couch and uh get out and have a good time you but you can’t forget to stretch first I’m telling you absolutely and don’t use your wrist yeah don’t don’t don’t do any of that don’t be yeah yep yep o older people would like us involved right here we we don’t have to stretch much because we know we ain’t going to do nothing crazy like that’s right you do to start see I’m just I am I’m at this weird mid maybe it’s a midlife crisis y’all I don’t know I’m trying maybe it’s just maybe it’s just you’re just keying to me a lot m i’ i I’m still so ambitious but I’m I’m finding the limitations of my of my body it’s good to push yourself let me just tell you it doesn’t get better listen as long as I don’t find myself waking up to pee a couple of times a night like I said it doesn’t get better that that’s coming I know I I’ve already started to flirt with it a little bit but it’s better than golf right you see people like to get into golf they say in their older age but like I’d much rather get into shagging well well it’s something intimate you can do with somebody golf is pretty independent right and you have to wait your turn she doesn’t like to wait her turn I don’t like to wait my turn oh you just you just like to get in there it’s a lot more expensive too than dancing golf is yes you’re right see there it is all right so we’ve determined that shagging is better than golf what else is shagging better than the couch you said that we’re selling it pretty good I think and and it’s uh and if you’re a our kind of our age and you’re a single man it’s a great place to meet single women yes it is absolutely absolutely yeah I mean cuz there’s a lot more women that need a partner to D if it’s just to dance with there’s a lot more women that need somebody to dance with than a man does women love to dance and women love yeah they they don’t have women don’t have any inhibitions about getting out there and dancing whether there’s not anybody on the floor if it’s 50 people on the that’s exactly there’re just women crawling all over the place waiting to dance with somebody just a man who’s got the guts to do it that’s exactly exctly I feel that I know Charlie and Jackie I’m pretty sure they’ll they’ll be at the uh Beach Music Festival absolutely in May right where I’ve got a tent set up we’ll have a tent dispatches they’ll have a tent set up where people can okay come and meet them and see and all that going on too so we may be close together so what what what is your take on my dad let’s just I want to hear about this is he are you concerned for him is he now that you’ve met me I don’t know if if he’s the one you’re concerned about I wasn’t as much before I met you right yeah thank you now that you met me you’re concerned about him now now I’m a little bit concerned it’s all his fault really he he really he really put me up to all this don’t let don’t believe everything he said put I put him up to this he he called me about two and a half three years ago and said dad why don’t you and I do a podcast are two for two now I got to warn you if you’re getting that much better at pronouncing words this may be the downfall of dispatches from mtle Beach what is Tik Tok going to do if Dad pronounces everything correctly I don’t want to let my Myrtle Beast down but I mean if I know a word I just know a word they going to have to that’s right you got to be you going to have to get me some more but
