This is Dispatches from Myrtle Beach with Charles Neil and my son Link. That’s, uh, he’s enjoying his coffee because. Mm-hmm. We’re getting started earlier today for him anyway. And uh, that’s right. ‘Cause it’s, it’s early out there. Oh my gosh, dad, it is so early. It is 9:15 in the morning here. Can you believe it? I bet you’re already in the afternoon over there. Yes, I am. Yeah. Done. I, I’ve already done about, I went to work early this morning painting and painting for about almost four hours before I came to. Take it easy and do my easy job. Yeah. You’ve already been working for four hours, that means you’ve been up for at least five, probably six hours. Okay. I mean, I’ve been up for, I’ve been up for three hours, but well listen to this. Dad, as of the recording to this, um, I have discovered today and yes, this is at least two days late that. Uh, daylight savings time happened, we sprung forward, and I did not know it because, you know, I was in, uh, Austin this past weekend and then I’ve, so I got up and I guess that’s when it sprung forward without unbeknownst to me. And, um, I. I got up, I was like, how much time do I have before we gotta get on the plane? I’m gonna go, I, I’m gonna go to at least one record store. And so I was, I was raring to go. I jumped up outta bed and I was, I got, I didn’t even take a shower, dad. I was so excited to get there, get to the record shop and, um, yeah. And then I got on a plane, came home, you know, saw the family, went to bed, didn’t think anything of it. And then yesterday, same thing. Got up, had so much to do, I just got, I got up and got right to it, but then this morning I was like, damn, if it isn’t dark. And I remember I was like, last night when we were eating dinner, it was still light outside. Light outside. And I started to put together, but then I was looking around the house in the dark, uh, making my coffee, letting the dogs out. And I, I started looking at the telltale signs of a spring forward, which include the clock on the stove being wrong, the clock on the microwave being wrong and different from my phone, which of course, changes on its own. Yeah, none of that was the case this time, so I was like, maybe, maybe it’s not. Maybe it, maybe it, it’s overcast, so maybe that’s why it’s so dark. And then when I got back home from walking the dogs, Christie was up and I was like. Has daylight savings, time happened and she busted out laughing just like you did. I mean’s like it’s par for the course, Link. You just don’t, you know, get with it. This is, this is part of her narrative that I’m in my own world and it, you know what, maybe it’s true. I, it, it’s, I’m not saying it’s link’s world and everybody’s living in it, but I’m certainly living in it and um, apparently I’m alone living in it ’cause everybody else knew. But lemme tell you this dad. The moment she laughed at me and I was confirmed that it was daylight savings time. You know what happened? I got tired. I was like, oh, I’m so sleepy. Ooh, I missed an hour. I missed an hour. I don’t, how many hours have I missed? Because I’m so late to it. Is it still just one, or have I missed three? I don’t know, but like, boy, no, you just, I’m so tired. You missed one. No, don’t. Yeah. I’m so tired. Now you missed. Don’t sound like you missed any of, to me until I knew it. I was, yeah, I wasn’t missing a beat until I knew it. I shouldn’t have known it. Yeah, I could have gone on forever, never knowing, and I’d have been totally fine. But here I am tired getting another cup of coffee. Well, you know, spring forward, really don’t. Bother me like in the fall when you have to go back that hour and, and get back used to, yeah. But that’s an extra hour though. This you lose an hour. That’s the, this is the one that hurts. Especially. No, because when you wake up early, like you do, do, did you wake up hour? Did you do like I did. I, I just set the clocks forward Saturday night. Probably Saturday afternoon, and then when I knew it was time for me to go to bed, like normal time, I went to bed at nine o’clock Saturday night and got all my sleep that I needed. So I didn’t, I I didn’t, that’s what I did. I, I really didn’t lose that. No. I went to sleep on daylight savings time. Yeah. You got ahead of it. I didn’t go to sleep. Yeah, you went to sleep an hour early. Yep. So did I. That would be correct. So I, yeah. So instead of 10 o’clock, I went to sleep at nine o’clock. And Yeah. And for me, instead of going to bed at nine o’clock, I went to bed at eight o’clock. Yeah. Here I am getting it. I, I’m all, I’m, I’m acting older than you. I go to sleep an hour before you. And I, I’d hate to say that I probably wake up, uh, I, I get up at six. What time do you get up? Yeah. Most, well, most of the time. About seven. Okay. All right. Well then where, where the same go, I got up this morning and little bit after six, so I could go work and get that extra hour in. Well, I got up at five this morning. I just didn’t know it, which wasn’t true, but you know what I’m saying? It’s. I’m happy that it’s here though, and I’m happy. You know what it feels like. It feels like when you’re going in for a procedure and they’re gonna put you under, and then next thing you know you’re waking up and you’re like, when do you start? It’s like, it’s already done. I. It’s done. Yeah. That’s what, that’s what daylight savings time was for me this year. I woke up. So you had, I woke up, I’m like, when is daylight savings time? It’s already done. What? So you what? You had a co, you had a colonostomy Daylight savings time. Yeah. Yeah. I did. I did. I have, I have fuzzy memories of, um. My rectum being explored. Tell me about the fires though. ’cause we gotta catch up on this. Uh, I’m ashamed to say it, but the way that I found out about the fires, ’cause as you know, I’m living in my own world. In your own world or my own world over here, uh, there was a Reddit post. People were concerned about you and the fires, and I’m like, what? What, and then, uh, people in the post explained that it wasn’t at nor North Myrtle Beach. So, uh, but it won’t about 20 miles from here. 20 miles sounds like a long ways when it comes to, uh, LA fires, but for Myrtle beach fires, which never happened, that might seem really close. So can you gimme the download on what happened? Does our audio and stuff here. This is his backyard. It was that close to his backyard. It that was in his backyard. And what is that? A pile of furniture? Yes. Like you piled all your patio furniture up. Right? Right. Yeah. So that it would. Like what? Burn in a pile, uh, just to get it away from the house, just to get it away, away from the house. So yeah, they caught it. Good God. I mean that’s, that’s, that’s a lot of fire, dude. That’s, oh, when they, uh, and they stopped it. They succeed. They, they protected the house. Yeah. Yeah. How many houses were lost? How many structures? Not, not any. Not any, but it got that close to, but it got, but it got close enough to some of ’em that it melted the siding off the houses and like the fence like we’ve got in the backyard, it, it melted them. They just fell to the ground. Okay. In a lot of places. And how long was it burning hours or days? Uh, the days, it, it just rained here really good. It rained a little bit last. Saturday, I think. Okay. Or Friday maybe. And helped put some of it out, but it didn’t rain, but like three or four tenths, maybe a half an inch. Okay. But where these fires were at in these woods, it’s got this. Peak moss in the ground. Mm-hmm. And when this, these fires get in that peak moss, they can, they think they can get it out, but it’s still smoldering up, up, up under it. And it can flare back up, but Oh, because Pete Moss is damp, right? Yeah. But it’ll still. Once it catches it, it’ll smolder in a way that, okay. Yeah. Interesting. I think, uh, see, yesterday before the rain, when I saw it at lunch, it, they, most of the fires was like 55% contained. Okay. And, and where, because there’ve been at, where Grayson lives at Carolina Forest and on down towards Georgetown, they got caught a man for starting a fire. They’ve arrested two people here. And they were working together on the arson? No, no. Two people independently. Yeah. The ones up here on our end where Grayson lives is, was, uh, a lady was, uh, burning some stuff in the backyard and Oh, it got away. Okay, so that’s not arson, that’s an accident. Well, it’s, see there’s been a burning band here in South Carolina for over a month. You ain’t, you supposed to get a. Permit to burn something. Okay. And you, I mean, they announced it on the news and everything. So they locked this lady up and then she got out. But she escaped the most No, they, she got, she bonded out. Okay. And so, but the mo, is she a villain? Is she a villain in town? Well, it is. I mean, she, no, because it is pretty PI mean, the. Uh, I don’t know how she’s, uh, I think she’s pretty remorseful, but that she, ’cause she lived in a neighborhood where there was houses all around her and they told her not to be burning something. So, but, but the most it can cost her is $500 and I think a month in jail. Okay. That’s the most, so they’re. They’re raising sand around here that there ought to be more punishment for people that Yeah. Aren’t doing what they need to be doing. Because, I mean, you, you knew it was dry and you weren’t supposed to be Yeah. I mean, for it to be that catastrophic to only have, because they $500 just like, just like where y’all were in LA they’ve had helicopters. Planes that fly down in the water, scoop the water up, go out, and they’ve, that this has been, they’ve been dropping water on all these fires with, and the National Guard had to come in and, uh, for foresters, people from North Carolina and Georgia and different places all been up here fighting these fires. And what about, what was the second? You said someone else started one. Another man started, he, he started two different fires, so I don’t know what they’re going, but that seems more like arson than, that was more like, yeah. Down towards Georgetown. Okay. But we got a good rain yesterday. That’s crazy. Yeah. Than I think maybe all this stuff is probably got to where a lot of these firefighters and stuff is gonna get to go back home. I think the, the top hero of the year is gonna be firefighters, you know? Oh, yeah. Now that this has happened to so many places now that we’re, I mean, you, you’re getting fires like we’ve got, does that mean you’re gonna be sending hurricanes my way? Because we’ve had a number of earthquakes in the past couple of weeks, so don’t send any hurricanes. I, uh, I, I don’t have any control over that, you know? Uh, the only time you, I think that you’ve had a hurricane was when I came to see you. That’s true. That time. That’s true. So maybe I don’t need to come see you during hurricane. Now I’m gonna, well let you, I’m gonna try not to react, but I’m saying, I’m gonna tell you right now, internally, I am a wreck. I don’t know what, I hope you have an explanation for this because this is a betrayal of everything I know to be true of you. That is a sense of identity for me, and I just, I don’t know if I can take. This being some sort of like cri, like I was gonna say, midlife crisis. Well, you know, if you’re, I’m gonna say you having a late life crisis and I’m not ready for that. Well, we, you know, we, our, our I basketball team, we just fired our coach at state and some of the other stuff’s going on. So, you know, after, I mean we get to the final four and then the very next year we can’t even. Do anything. So we fi we fired it. They didn’t even win enough games because there’s so many teams in the, uh, league. They didn’t even win enough games where they could even get to go to the a CC tournament. And what’s the explanation? So the explanation is, you know, Carolina seems like that they win a little bit more than we do. So you maybe I need to switch teams. Dad, do you? I’m gonna have to give it to you straight. Okay. I’m not, I mean, I just gotta tell you, I have never been more disappointed in you. April fool. What? Wait isn’t wait. Oh, this comes out on April Fools. It does, yeah. Man, you. And next thing you gonna tell me is that it is not daylight savings time. No. Have I have I got a fallback again? An hour, man. When I was like, I’ve never been so disappointed in my life. It’s like I meant every word of it to, to the point where I wasn’t even comfortable saying it. Like I didn’t want, I didn’t know if I wanted to make dad feel that bad, but I had to do it. Can you live with this? I’m so relieved. You got, Hey, you got me. And the fact that you were wearing it the whole time, like the moment I sat down before we were rolling, I was like, well, I know I’m not going. I have to talk about that. But then we got going on everything else and I forgot. You got me. Yep, you got me. You guys look good in Carolina Blue. That’s all I wanna say. Hey. And prettier than red. Hey, that’s strike one for you. Hey. And I didn’t EI didn’t even have to go buy a shirt. I tried to go find one and buy one last night. And I called a friend of ours and I called Mary. I said, I know you are a Carolina fan, so, but I need to borrow two a shirt from my podcast. Oh, no. So now I didn’t even, I bet she loved it. I didn’t even have, she loved to hear it. Oh God. Yeah. So, so we, you really threw me for a loop, dad. Whew. Mm. Because that’s, this is part, part of our identity is the suffering, you know? Yeah. The silent suffering and the big swings can find a four. Nothing. All right. Yep. That experience of being that disappointed in you, it’s, it’s kind of like when you wake up from a dream and you, the dream was so real, even though you know that it was a dream, now that you’re in your waking life, you can’t fully convince your body that it didn’t really happen. Like there’s, there’s this stain now. The joke was so good that there’s some, there’s some stain now that like, I just don’t have quite as much trust in you, dad. I don’t know. Well, you, you gotta earn it back all year, well before the next April. You can’t do that because may, maybe this’ll be a, a great thing that, you know, you, and you’re pretty good at this, that when I do die and pass on that, when you stand up in my, at my funeral and you say, you know, I have always been proud of my dad, but. One time he really got me, he wore a Carolina shirt. So you can just tell this story. So to make, and I haven’t and ever since that moment, I didn’t trust him as much ’cause it was a sta So may he rest in peace. This is what you want me to say at your, at your funeral. Okay. All right. No, you’ll, I’ll write it down. You’ll figure out something to do. No. Okay. So maybe your heart’s not palpitating so much and you know, you won’t be so disappointed in me. He’s got a podcast talking about life and more. From family stories to old folk. Lord, linked by his side, sitting close to the mic. Yes. Together they laugh. Yeah. They’re quite alike. Yeah, we are. He says. He says, that would be correct with a nod and a grin, talking about life where the good times begin. That’s right from, from the beach to the mic. He’s set in his ways that would be cor erect every single day. Sounded like you said core erect that time. Yeah. Right. It didn’t have to be that weird. Yeah. From seafood to stories and sweet tea sip. He’s got you laughing with every single tip. When he drops that line, you know his. True in his southern style. He’s breaking it through. So listen close. If you ever hear that Sweet Southern sound is crystal clear. Yep. That would be correct. He’ll always say, Myrtle Beach style brightening up your day. Well, isn’t that nice? We should. We should. Uh. I, I think I might read that at your funeral. Yeah. You know, have a little slideshow, you know? Yeah. I mean, I think we got lots of ideas now that we’re thinking about it. That was that. I would only get ’em at the fair, you know, at the fair. They’d be making ’em at the fair. That would be correct. We would never buy, we, we would always buy hot dogs. Growing up, growing to grill, but we would not buy like brats or no sausages or kiba. That was never, that was just reserved for the fair. That was for the fair. That would be great. I don know why. Why did we never grill out with some sausages or some kiba? Mm-hmm. Well, probably because from the, in the south down here, we, we make, they make, when you kill hogs and you make sausage, they make link sausage or patty sausage. So yeah, we are more of a, we’re more of a link and patty and them little bitty link sausages and all that stuff. So you that, that, that’s the kind of sausage that. W we mainly eat down here at, uh, unless you, unless we go to the fair. Yeah. Because it’s a special treat for us. Oh yeah. A special treat. They throw all those, they’re cooking all those, uh, peppers and onions and Yeah. All that stuff. All right. Try this next one. Oh Lord. A lo ola. And now it’s not a body part. It is, it is a, it is a food condiment. A, uh, you should give it a try. Aa, aa, uh, it’s still, you’re still making it sound like a body part. I don’t know. It it, the, the, it ends with a, with a, with a, a long E sound. Ellie. That’s it right there. Mm-hmm. You know what this is? Uh, no. This is basically mayonnaise. I, it’s a fancy word for mayonnaise, but I don’t know if it’s any different than actual mayonnaise. It’s a lot less syllables, mayonnaise, actually, it’s the same syllables, so I could just aioli. I just aioli. Aioli. Is that two, is that three? I just cr, I just cross that out and put Dukes up there. Let’s just say it is a lot less letters. I think I, I think I’ve found something that is true for me to say. Yep. That one didn’t take you long. Alright, now let’s go to proper nouns. Who is this? Um, this actor. Benedict Cumberbatch. That’s it. Now this is the one, I think when you’re not reading this one and you’re just trying to refer to him. People, people say it all types of ways. Cumber match. Benedict Cumber Patch. You know who this is? Uh, no. Um, he played Dr. Strange, you know who Dr. Strange is in the James Bond film? No. Um, he is, he is British. So there’s that. Okay. Alright. You’re doing really good. Alright, here’s a, here, here’s, here’s another guy from the world of Entertainment. Oh. Yeah. Martin Scorsese. So you know that one sc? Yeah. You actually did. The way you say his last name, it’s almost like you’re adding an accent. Let’s hear that again. Martin Scorsese. Scorsese, Scorsese is how I say it, with more of a z sound. Scorsese. Scorsese. Scorsese, Martin Scorsese. You seen any Martin Scorsese films? Uh, I think, but I’m not sure. Toy story four, I think, I think that’s when he came, came on the scene. No, I’m joking. No, I don’t think, I think he did. I think he did some good films. Yeah. I think he’s a good, he’s a good film person. He, he’s, he’s, he’s won, uh, I think because I watched a little bit of the Oscars a week or so ago. And, uh, they showed him where I, I think he’s won several Oscars, so he, I wouldn’t be surprised. Must be a pretty good director. Alright, I feel like you’re trying too hard. We need to loosen up a little bit. And when you see this next one, just like, just, just hit it. First thing you see, just say it. There you go. Boom. Cls. There we go. You know what a CLS is? Uh. It’s also not a body part, but you certainly have made it sound like one too cliche. Oh yeah. There it’s kind of, I would emphasize the first syllable, like put more emphasis on the first syllable. But say it how you said it. Cliche. There it is. You know what a cliche is. It is something that you hear somebody else say, this got famous and like, uh, that would be correct, Uhhuh. If you watch out, it might, if you say it too much, it might become a cliche. That’s right. See, well see. You knew what this word was. You just, you hadn’t seen it in writing. Maybe I. Please. Yeah. Well, you told me not to tri some. Yeah, that was good. Yeah, you’ve been trying too hard. That’s the key. You just gotta go with it. All right, you, you did too good today. We gotta step it up. You got Yeah. Myrtle Beast.
