This is Dispatches from Myrtle Beach with Charles Neal and my son, Link from Good Mythical Morning. How you doing son? I’m doing good. And I wanna sing to you. ♪ Happy birthday, birthday to you. ♪ Me too? ♪ Happy birthday to you ♪ Me too? Me me. ♪ Happy birthday dear dad ♪ ♪ Happy birthday to you ♪ Oh, that went to a weird place at the end. I was trying to wish you happy birthday and you started trying to sing me Happy Birthday. Simultaneously. Simultaneously. That’s right. I mean, today, as of the release of this episode is your 70, at least 73rd birthday. That’s, that’s enough. That’s enough. 73rd. That’s right. And, um. Yeah. On June 1st, I, I will be turning 47? Mine’s on Tuesday. And yours is on? Uh, yeah. 47. Sunday. And, and guess what, Link? What? There’s a special person sitting right over there in the back and her birthday’s Sunday too. Yep. June what? First. Oh yeah, we have the same birthday. Yeah, we do. Since, when has that happen? Forever. Every year. Since. Since you were both born, I think. Well, it don’t feel too bad. I forgot that we have the same birthday. ’cause I don’t know how old I am. Right. It’s okay. So is that okay? Yeah, that’s okay. All right. Don’t worry about it. I mean, there’s a, I got a lot going on, Logan. Today is also my 25th wedding anniversary. That would be correct. As, as of this release. So, uh, we’re recording this, uh, a little bit earlier than that, so we’re in anticipation of the big celebration. We’re going ahead and get going for you. So, happy birthday, dad. Happy birthday to you. Yeah. Good. You feeling good? And feeling good. Hey? Yeah. Yeah. So, yeah, I’m going be birthday plans today I am in, um, Hilton Head, South Carolina. Oh, okay. So you got a, a birthday trip that you’re on, what, even the 25th and come back on the 29th. Just the two of y’all. Just the two of us. So what are gonna do down there? Well, I think we’re gonna invite somebody else, so, but we ain’t done that yet. Alright. We got enough room to have another couple go. So, uh. So what are y’all gonna do? Look, look what Logan put up, right? Logan Three Geminis on one podcast. What a mess. Ain’t that the damn true Lord. No mercy, ain’t no telling where this one to go today, but three Geminis on it because, uh, that’s why we’re in state. Logan Lo, Logan and I were talking yesterday and I said, well. People tell me, said you a full-blooded Gemini, and I said, that would be correct. Yeah. What, what does that mean to you when you say that would be correct? That means that ever what those astrological signs? Well, I know that, but I’m saying what, what makes you a fullblown Gemini in your mind? Because, uh, I, I, I can kind of be. One way, one day and one way the next day and one thing. And, uh, my feelings seem like they, they come out with me like a good Gemini would. So we let our feelings be shown. Okay. That’s, I, I resonate with that. Yeah. What are you gonna do in Hilton Head? Uh, you gonna golf? I may golf. One day, and then we are going to go sit on the beach, sit on the beach, sit on a, it is just a different beach. Yeah, just a different beach. Mm-hmm. Just, you know, when we go on vacation, do things like that. Sometimes I like to rest a little bit because I usually have to work pretty hard to be able to get, get to go on these little excursions. Mm-hmm. The way me and Nancy work around the house and I work and Gotcha. It’s our kind of our getaway time and, uh, to enjoy ourself and, I mean, so. 73 and still doing it and getting it. So that’s pretty good. That’s really good. Christie and I are going to Big Sur Oh, which is Central Coast of California. Absolutely beautiful. That’s like, that’s one of our favorite places. So we’ve done a number of trips, I think for the past few years. We’ve gone every year, maybe to a different place to stay, but. Yeah, there’s some like more camping type places. There’s some really nice places because this is our 25th, we went with like a really nice place. Oh yeah. Overlooking the, the ocean and these like massive cliffs and in the redwood trees it’s, hmm. It’s gonna be so good. We’re looking forward to it. So that’s how we’re celebrating it. And then honestly, I haven’t figured out my birthday. I mean, I know it’s, it has to involve, uh, a party, have a bunch of people over me doing some DJing, probably. I’m, I’m sure, I’m sure I’ll find a way to make that happen, but I gotta get those, I gotta get that into works. But today is about me and Christie, it’s also about you. So. Let’s focus on that. Well, I, I, I, I, I kind of thought about birthdays with what was, was, what went on in my life. ’cause it’s been a pretty good while. But I gotta, thinking you brought up about. Having a, you know, having a party and mm-hmm. And doing it for yourself. Yeah. Well, you know, well, when I was probably starting when I was five years old, mama and daddy, until I was about 10, had a party at our house there in Littleton every year for my birthday. Mm-hmm. With all her brothers and sisters, and then some of the, all the kids around in the. The neighborhood would come and we just had a big time, and I mean, it’s birthdays I written. I guess it kind of just instilled in me how important a birthday is because I looked forward to that every year until I got older and then we didn’t do it anymore and I think we moved to another house or something, but people got busy. But I mean, there was a crowd there so. I guess that’s the reason. You know, when I used to live in Goldston and we moved up there, I. I, I had my 50th birthday party up there. I remember that. And had over, I, you and Kristy came and, uh, had over 150 people there and I cooked barbecued chickens and cooked a pig and just had a big birthday party. Just like had, I believe I had, uh, Eddie Ray there was dj and we just had a big time and it started about, um. Two o’clock or maybe four o’clock in the afternoon, and about one o’clock that morning I think it finally ended that. That’s a good party at 50. Yeah. Yeah, you did. You did it. That was a good one. I remember that. So, you know, us, we, we, I think we we’re birthday people. We birthday people and we like to celebrate. We, we don’t, you know, they don’t nobody have to throw us a party. We’ll throw one ourself. That’s right. I’m gonna throw my own party. That’s exactly right. So you get to do what you, it is our birthday. We get to do what we want to, so, and everybody around me knows it, that’s for sure. Yeah. So I reckon you just to chip off the old block. Mm-hmm. Yep. Best parties are the ones you throw for yourself. Yep. And my opinion. Uh, maybe you can do, like the guy did that good friend of mine come rolling up in his pickup truck and had, had two kegs of beer in the back of it. That’s a good gift. You know, everybody bring what they, what they’re best at. Yep. I like that too. It was a lot of fun. Yeah. Yeah. I might do a pot, a potluck element. Hmm. I like that. Bring something you’re really good at to either eat or drink. Mm-hmm. Yep. And I’m, everybody might need to bring me a record. A lot of people these days, my friends, they’ll have a party and be like, no gifts. And I mean it. No gifts. Your presence is the gift. And I’m like, well, I kind of want a present. Yeah, me and you both. So I think I’m gonna, I’m gonna throw a party. I’m gonna say bring me, bring a record that, uh, you really like for me to have. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So that’s what I’m thinking. So it’s coming together, but you heard from any Myrtle Beast? Yeah, I, I got, uh, I’m, I got a holler ride to Emma for her sweet, sweet message on my birthday. Okay. It, it says, thanks for being our internet granddad. It says, I wanted to email you to say thank you. I’ve been a long time fan of your son’s work, and I loved it when Your Dispatches podcast came out and listened Every cent. I was just a baby when my granddad passed away and I never got to meet him. He was a carpenter here in England and did a lot of decorating and repairs. My nana tells me stories of when they were younger and how he acted and how much and how funny he was. Also the time he had a ladder slip out from under him. When he was on a roof, boy, been there, done. That sounds kind of similarly. Yep. Yes it does. Uh, I also lost my other granddad when I was 25. Another beacon of humor and hard work. And I looked up to gone. Looked up to, gone out of my life. I wanted to say thank you as much as. Have given me the chance to have a connection with you, with not just you, but also my grandfathers of late. Hmm. Especially Robert, who seems very similar to you in spirit. It gives me peace and humor like he was still here with my family. Thanks for being that granddaddy and I I never had you were loved by us all, so never stop being you. Whew. Well, Emma, I, I’m not, it is too late for me to stop being me. I think that’s, I think that is a, that is a part of who you are. You’re a beacon. Yeah. That’s pretty special humor and hard work. That’s right. Yeah. Yeah. So that’s a good birthday gift, isn’t it? Yeah. I’m telling you. Yeah. That’s, that’s a. That’s a special gift, Emma and I, and I appre. I really do appreciate it and thank you so much. I, I am so, so glad that you, you ain’t changed. And that uh, and what did you call me? It link? Nope. Charles. That’s right. That’s right. That’s it. Oh, I’m Charles. We go. Here we go. Charles, that’s Uhhuh char, you know, is it? It’s not really that hard being 73. Is it Charles? No, it’s easy. All I do is I get up and I be me and it just happens. And today I was 73. Yesterday I was 72. And uh, I bet you a year from now I’ll be 74. Yes. What you think? Well, it it is pretty nice being 47 too. Yeah. Is it? I’m, I’m 47 and I’m still kicking and I’m having a good time and enjoying what I do and, uh, we’re both enjoying what we do get to meet all these people that are kind of influential people and. People that are, you know, uh, link. Who’s the influential publisher that you’ve met recently? Well, I got to went to that, uh, concert, uh, and got to see Post Malone and all these other Oh yeah. I know you like to hang out with him. Yeah. You, you like to hang. They, they, lots of, lots of several other people of course. You know what, what I think is, is special for me link is that I, I, I turned 47, but I got to give myself my own birthday party. But you know, I probably got to include my best friend Rhett, because we’ve been together since the first grade. That will be correct. And you know it. You know there’s not many people, even though I’m just 47 right now. That’s young and that’s young son. Yeah. Don’t get down on yourself. Don’t let anybody tell you that 47 is old. ’cause that’s young. And I know you look old. All that gray. You got more gray hair than I do. I know. Sometimes you look older that you look older than me. Yeah. You look. Yeah, I, I don’t know if we, we look older or not, but, uh, neither one of us look old. That’s right, that’s right. They, no, we young looking. Yeah, that’s what, yeah. People keep asking you all the time. Charles said, what is it? I know you d your hair, you got to put something on your hair. You, but I say, no, sir, that would be incorrect. Yeah, that’s right. Yeah. Mm-hmm. So, but I, I, and I, I don’t think you have to. I don’t have to dye my hair. It just comes out natural. And, uh, but my hair is a lot of work. Uh, it, good lord, I can tell it’s a lot of work, getting it all up there. Blow drying, poofed up. You should just lay it down. Like I lay my, I lay mine back and it just, you go with it. More stuff. Yeah. Good. No, I kind of, I like your hair. I like your hair too. Link. I like my hair. Yeah? Yeah. Whose hair? I like my hair. Your hair’s? Hair link. Oh, you like link’s hair. Which is your hair? Yeah, which is my, right now it’s my hair. Alright. All right. Brain’s about to break. Let’s, let’s call it, we did good. That was a love fest. I like that one. It’s spelling bee time. That would be correct. Does that make you, uh, ready to try to spell some stuff? Oh yeah, I’m ready. Alright. I’m always ready to try. All right. That would be, that would be correct. Oh, ooh. Alright, so let’s see. How do I do this? I say it and then you write it down on your whiteboard. Okay. I’m just gonna describe it. So, um, I. So this will be a dark brown dessert that you can make from a mix, or you can make it from scratch, but you can have a box. And then if it’s your birthday and you like. To celebrate by blowing out candles. You need to put ’em down in this thing, but this is a dark brown, one of those. Okay, let’s see. He’s working on it. Let’s see what he’s got. Fudge bro. Bro. Wines, brownies. B-R-O-W-I-N-E-S. Hold that up again. Yeah. Yeah, put put it right below your, your face. Closer to you. Closer to you. There you go. Now I was thinking chocolate cake, but you wrote fudge. You spell fudge route, right? But you brow, you wrote, bro wines, what is a bro wine? Hey, bro. Would you like some wine? It’s so, no. It’s so cool that that, that’s how you, that’s how you pronounce brownies. B-R-O-W-I-N-E-S. Yeah. You might need to reorder that. I in that E, but hold on. Try. Try chocolate cake for me. I’m giving you another shot here. It’s been a while. My God. Mm-hmm. Because you might want one of these for your birthday. I believe you know how to spell cake. Alright. He’s consistent, y’all. It’s still cho late. And he’s looking at it. You’re looking at it. ’cause you still didn’t, you didn’t do that on purpose. No, that is not. It is. That’s Choley dad. Spell it. Say read what you wrote. Chocolate. No. Sound out what you wrote. Well, it probably doesn’t look like Cho late. Hold it up again. It looks a little like cho Late cake. All right, erase it now. This is, um, for kids who are, if they’re given a stick at a birthday party and they have to swing blindfolded at this thing that’s hanging up, and if you hit it. Candy’s gonna come flying out of it. You know what it is? Uh, starts with a p. Don’t make, I can’t, uh, don’t make me have to tell you. Pinata. Uh oh. Oh God. So how’s he gonna spell this? Hold it up just right below your face and then say what it is. Pinata. Okay. Well, what you, what you wrote makes sense. Mm-hmm. P-E-N-Y-A-T-A. That ain’t how it is. But that could have been how it was. I mean, I mean, this one’s, this one has an added level of difficulty. ’cause it, first of all it’s pi and then it’s in with a, with a thing over it, whatever that thing’s called the accent. Actually, it’s a, um, no, it’s, yeah, it’s that squiggly thing. And then it’s a a TA, who would’ve guessed, right. Oh, okay. Well, kind of. Now change. Change the E to an I and then the Y sound has now been, the Y has been replaced with that. The accent that you put on there. It’s a sideways S. Yeah. Change that accent. Symbol. Make it, it’s like a S squiggly. It goes back up and then delete the Y, delete the Y. Just scrub that out. Mark that. All right. Now, now read what you got. Pinata. Well, it’s, but the, the symbol makes the end go ni, so that’s correct. Ow. Not Miata. Pen. Pen What? Pin mata. Okay. He’s getting worse. It’s pronounced how you said, it’s just spelled how you didn’t write it. Yeah, I like the wine. Okay. What about when you pop a cork of this to celebrate? It’s not wine, it’s not beer. It’s a big bottle. You might break one over a ship. It’s bubbly. Raise your bubbly glasses. Champagne. But yeah. All right. I’m gonna tell you dad, there is a wild G somewhere in there. So wedged the G in there where you think it needs to go? Uh, he put it below it. PAG. Did you? Is that what you did? Yeah. P-A-G-N-E. Alright, you got it in there. That’s right. It looks ugly, but you got it. Okay. Alright. What these, you blow these up and you can put helium in if you want ’em to float. Say it. Balloons, Uhhuh. See, you fell for it. You didn’t want to give out too many double letters, did you? That right there is balance. You have spelled balance. Now the question is, do you want to, oh, look, he got it. All I needed was one more o wedge in there. Now there’s a G somewhere in balloon. Nah, I’m just messing with you. All right. Uh, but there’s a backwards G in this next one. This is a grouping of flowers. Oh my God. A grouping of flowers that you put in a vase to go get Nancy to spell this one. Um, um, darn it ain’t coming. Uh, bouquet. Oh, good God. Everything good God, he’s asking me to spell bouquet. What am I gonna do? Good God. We stretch. We’re stretching him. Yeah, that ain’t right. This say it and show it. Que why are you you not even saying, is that how you say it? How do you say it? B bouquet. Hold it up. Say it again. Bouquet Bo. Bequia. Bequia. Yeah, Bequia. I mean, the fact that you’ve got a Q in there is good Bo, but you spell Bequia. Yes, I did, but I knew it. All right. That’s good enough though, Bequia? Yeah. Mm-hmm. Yeah. So which of these would you want? Would you want a que? Would you want a ballin? Would you want champagne with a g? Would you want a pinata with a e or would you want a Choate cake? If you could only choose one? I’d want a pinata. Really? Why? Yeah, because I don’t like chocolate that Well, it explains why you can’t spell it. That’s right. And then champagne makes you burp. I don’t like, no, I don’t. I, I don’t drink that stuff. And balloons. I mean, who, who cares about balloons? Yeah, right. Kids. Yeah. You out? Yeah. What about a bouquet? Well, that’d be more like I was giving Nancy a bouquet. Okay. All right. All right. So I mean, I think it’d be funny even saying, I did not know you were going to choose a pinata, but I’m glad you did. If I, you know, if you had a big pinata and maybe. Instead of having candy in it, you’d put money in it so it’d bust it open. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Now what, what kind of animal or shape would you want the pinata to be? It could be anything. Uh, a horse, like you’re beating a horse with a stick. Yeah. That’s not nice, dad. I think if I got a pinata, I’d want mine to be a dirty rug. A dirty rug. Yeah. Come out here, kids clean this dirty rug, I mean, pinata. And then they’d be, they’d be just beating the hell outta this rug, getting it all nice and clean, wondering where the candy is. And after a while I’d be like, what’s wrong? Why y’all quitting? You got, you miss the spot. And then all of a sudden, well, where’s the candy? It’s like, what? Don’t worry about that. Just keep cleaning my rug. Yeah, that’s right. So a rug. See. That’s my answer. Okay. A dirty rug. You beat that thing with a stick. Well, I think a pinata most of the time it’s like a donkey or something, isn’t it? Yeah. Or a, a very colorful Yeah. I’ve seen, I mean, there’s stores out here that have everything you could think of. I mean, you could whoop Elmo’s face. You, we could probably get one of your own face. Yeah, that. Yeah. Or one of yours? What? You wanna beat my face with a stick? Yeah. See what comes out of it. Smarts with yours on one side and mine on the other. A dispatch is from Myrtle Beach. Pinata. Available now@mythical.com. I like that. Well, happy birthday dad. Happy birthday to you too. I wish I could be there in Hilton head with you, but um, maybe for 75 we need to start gearing up for like, that’s a good year for a big party, right? Yeah. You had 50, now we go 75, and then we’re going for a hundred. But let, I think 75 should be a big one. Yeah. What you think we can do that? Yeah. All right, let’s start thinking about that. ’cause we’re gonna need two years to plan it. We can do that and see if you, if you can come. Yep. I’ll, I’ll physically show up for, for a 75 party. All right. I’m going to, I’m, I’m writing that down. All right. Yeah. We gotta make that happen. Well, I mean, when, let’s see, three more years and you’re 50. I might just show up at your house when you turn 50. I think you need to, that’s right. Yep, I can handle that. Well Link.
