DFMB 88: Charles Is Back In LA (In-Person Episode)

This is Dispatches from Myrtle Beach with Charles Neal and my son, Link, from Good Mythical Morning. Hey, hey. Hey, look, we, we, we’re in person. We’re doing, we’re doing a weird father son patty cake because we can touch each other. And that’s what we, that’s what we’re doing. Welcome to the studio again, Dad. This is not the first time, but it’s the first time in about a year. Yeah, about a year. Yeah, but it’s good to be back. It’s nothing like seeing you in person. Yeah, yeah. You haven’t changed a bit since I talked to you on video. Yeah. And you looking, still looking pretty good too, so. Oh, thank you, Dad. Yeah. I think you did. I appreciate that. We keep, we keep striving to do our best. And look our best. That’s right. And it, and um, it can’t hurt to do it in person. Cause you’re, the, the team, the mythical crew actually brought you in. To the point, and scheduled everything to the point where I did, I was hearing about it. It wasn’t like I was the one bringing you in. They’re bringing you in. You know, you’re here for professional reasons, not for personal reasons. That would be correct. Right. Yeah. I mean, we were, we were hanging out personally as, as father son with some family time last night, but I did have to tell you now you can’t stay up late. You can’t have too much fun cause you’re here on business. That’s what he told me, but I wasn’t too worried about that, but uh, cause we had a pretty hectic schedule getting here and different things going on. Nancy and I weren’t getting a whole lot of sleep, but we, we, we made it. You actually got here before Christy and I got back from New York City, which was the plan. Yep. Um, Lando was holding the fort down at home and let’s see, you guys showed up. But Sunday, Sunday, Sunday, 12 o’clock, got there about 12 o’clock Sunday. We didn’t, we didn’t come back from New York until the next day, yesterday in the afternoon. So you have to fill in the gaps on what happened before we got home. Um, Lando was super excited to host you guys. Oh yeah, he was. When we, I, I texted him when we landed and he was in all tickled to death. But it was kind of funny when you arranged for us to be flying first class. Of course, dad. On the plane. And so, but, and Nancy and I, they were serving us our food on the plane. That’s right. And you know, uh. I’m not much of a cheese man except for Nancy’s. Homemade PI cheese. Oh. And when they got to us, they said, we’ve got to, what we have left is the char charcuterie. They didn’t have any of the other dishes. No. Um, no, nothing. And I, and Nancy looked at me, said, well, you asked, that’s what we’re gonna have to eat. But it was all right. But we, we, meat and cheeses. Yeah. Uh, charcuterie. You weren’t, did we put you in the back of first class? That was, we were in the last two seats. Okay, so it was like, that’s almost like first class part B or something? Well, no, it was first class. No. And then we come to find out that You sound like you’re complaining. Well, I was a little bit. But the stewardess told, told us that you need, you have to kind of go online or something and pre order your food. They email See, we, we learned something. So we got it took care of. See, you’re learning to be that next level celebrity. You got to respond to your email, which probably didn’t even come to you. It came to one of us who booked your flight and were asking for you to say what you wanted in your meal. I don’t know. We got some emails about the flight, too, so they had us kind of in the loop, too. They don’t make enough meals for everybody to get double. That nice looking omelet that the guy had in front of us. Oh, the guy right in front of you got it? Yeah, and you could just smell it. It smelled so good. Oh, man. What did you do with this charcuterie? Well, we’d had, uh Boiled eggs, cut in half, and I like boiled eggs, so I ate the eggs and I ate some of the meat, but the fruit was good, it had some good fruit. Okay. And, but it was funny, I asked the stewardess if, uh, they had some mayonnaise. to put on my deviled eggs. And she, she said, no, we don’t have any mayonnaise. But she said, I got some in my pocketbook. I’ll bring you one. And she did. How much mayonnaise does she carry in her pocketbook? Did you, did you dry her out? I don’t know. I didn’t ask her that. She was just nice enough. What if you took her last mayo packet? Well, she was going to go back home. She’ll be able to replenish. She was the story. You’re telling yourself to feel better. You took her last mayonnaise. No, I don’t think so. She was very nice about it. First of all, that is nice. I mean, that’s above the that’s, that’s, that’s one, a first class right there. Getting pocketbook mayonnaise. Yeah. I can tell you right now, I’ve never gotten first class pocketbook mayonnaise. Well, was it good? Was it a, was it a big pfft? Yeah, just one of them little things for you. Like a ketchup thing, but in mayonnaise. And you put it on the eggs. Wow, she cared. She looked after me. I mean, if, You said mayonnaise for a deviled egg, but it was a hard boiled egg. Hard boiled egg, yeah. You’re just putting mayonnaise on like squirted it out on each one of my little halves of egg and ate it with us and put some salt and pepper on it. Okay. So that’s good to go then. Yeah. So is that what you do at home? You hard boil an egg and then you squirt mayonnaise on. Oh yeah. If I, if Nancy cooks me some eggs and was hard boiled or even my arm or something, I usually put a little mayonnaise on that too. You put a mayonnaise on an omelet? What about a scramble? No, I don’t put them on scramble. That’s where you draw the line. If the egg is a smooth sheet on top, it needs mayonnaise. But if it’s a scrambled, uneven surface of eggs, it doesn’t need mayonnaise. Yeah, that would be correct. Yeah. Okay. All right. I like Manny. It sounds like you might need to start traveling with your own Manny. Well, that might not be a bad idea. I’d stick some of Nancy’s pocketbook there. Okay. But, so we When I got off, when I was leaving the plane, I made sure and told, like, stewardess that was up there, thank you very much for letting me have some of your mayonnaise. And she, she nodded and smiled, and I don’t know, she, I don’t think she knew who I was, and I didn’t give her a card, so she still don’t, but. Because you didn’t want to ask more of her after the mayonnaise. I mean, she went It sounds like you guys had a real connection. Yeah. Like you’re in the secret Society of mayonnaise carriers. . Yeah. I guess I but but you don’t know her name. You don’t give her a holler out. I don’t know her name. And if you did, you couldn’t say it. ’cause it’s a secret society that, of mayonnaises That would be, I might be correct. Yeah. Mayonnaise secret society. You could, you need to get in on that. You gotta start carrying your mayonnaise. Yeah. By the time I got home. I walk in the front door. Of course, Lando is still at school at this time. He’s not home. Uh, I walk in the front door, and um, You d here here you come, just trotting out in nothing but a bathing suit. I was like, that’s it. He’s He’s done. He’s hit the ground running. He, you treat my house like a resort. I would be. I like that. We have a pool. Got a pool. I mean, you and Nancy were back there sunbathing by the pool. Yep. Just trotting through the house. Rest and relax and had the whole, after Lando, we got Lando off to school, had the whole house to ourselves, just like we was at a nice resort property. Just, you know, just take care of it. And use of the kitchen. We are mine. We used a lot of stuff. Make yourself at home. We did. You bonded with the cat? Well, you might would say that me and the cat bonded. Yeah, after she bit me on the top of my foot. Uh huh. And then I gave her a little boot and then she Didn’t bother me no more. Oh, okay. I’m sorry, but I mean, if, if a cat bites me, she’s got to get, she’s going to get a kick. Whether it was my cat, your cat, whoever cat. Well, you come to my house, you kick him a cat, dad. I kicked your cat. But he did bite you first. Yes, he did. Okay. And, but, and before all that, he’d come up and just had me rub him and do it. And then he, I reckon he was pissed off cause I wasn’t rubbing him more. So he bit me on top of the foot. Yeah, we let him do whatever he wants. Yeah, I heard that, but I didn’t. No, you didn’t. When Sokka bites us on the bare foot, we rub him. That’s what we do. That’s kind of telling him to do it again. Yeah, yeah, yeah. We reinforce I don’t want him to do it again. We reinforce all the negative things. Behavior. Yeah. Yeah, well. Sorry, Dad. You grew up, you grew up in a different age than I did, so that’s all right. It’s called, I guess it’s called positive reinforcement. Now when my dad comes over, I want you to bite his foot just like you bite ours. So, he’s good. All I went, but Sunday when we got there, Lando was just giving us big hugs, and he was just tickled to death to see us and everything. And the first thing, when Nana come in, and we went in and they were over there in the kitchen talking, the first thing out of Lando’s mouth after all the greetings and everything, he said, Nana, I got to have some of your pimento cheese and chicken salad. Mm hmm. I said. Which, what, did you bring it or you had to make it? No. So we sat down and rested a little while. Okay. And Christy left her car key and we went to the grocery store. Which is called? Ralph’s. And not called? Frank’s. Frank’s. Yeah. Y’all like to call Ralph’s Frank’s. Yeah. So we went, We went to Ralph’s and got all the stuff we need, and then I got us some hamburgers, so. And while, got back to the house, and we was all three in the kitchen. And Nancy and Lando was over there, and they was making the chicken salad, and Nancy was boiling the eggs and doing all that good stuff. You were looking for the mayonnaise. Well, I didn’t need that yet, because we bought a cabbage to make some slaw, because I cooked us some charcoal hamburgers, but I was making my homemade chili while they were fixing the other stuff. We missed all of it. Well, there’s some still in the refrigerator at your house. And still three hamburgers left over, so we, I mean, we was, we was like busy bees in the kitchen. Y’all went in on the kitchen big time. And Lando was, I’d say, well, where’s this? He’s at home in the kitchen. And yeah, cause Lando can cook. So he, uh, was showing us where. To find everything and do it and all, so that night we, I was trying to text you cause you got one of them green eggs and I had never cooked on it. I finally couldn’t, we weren’t getting together so I just Googled it on the phone how to cook on a green egg. That’s good. So I cooked this charcoal hamburgers and Lord, when Lando, when we got through and Lando come out with his, he told me, he said, poor granddaddy. You make some big hamburgers, I said, cause I patted him out myself and his sandwich was about that thick. All right. And had chili and sauce. You can’t get your mouth around that, you gotta smush it. So Lando and I both eat a hamburger on the bun and then we, and then we divided it in half. Cheeseburger and just put some stuff on the plate and eat a head cause we was hungry. And we, but we have mayonnaise. Oh yeah. You’re not lacking in home mayonnaise. No. And you had Duke, they got, y’all got Duke’s mayonnaise out here so everything was good. We know, we know how to do it. Then I’m, while they was cooking all that, I made, uh, slaw for us. For the hamburgers. So we had a big time. And then when we showed up the next day, you were like, what? Back on the green egg. Let’s, let’s have some steaks. Not arguing with that. It’s nice when you, when you come into town and your dad’s in resort mode, but that doesn’t mean he’s not cooking. Y’all are both. And the first thing we ate was when we got there was the pimento cheese and The chicken salad, and I couldn’t decide which one I liked better, but they were both really good on the crackers. Yeah. It was a good start. Yeah, so, that’s what we did. Had a big, we had a wonderful time with Lando and getting to spend about a day and a half with him right by ourself. Just us grandparents and, you know, grandparents is made to. Spoiled grandchildren. And we, we did our best. Uh, cause whatever he, Christy told us, sent us a text or called or something, said, you better be careful cause Lando’s going to ask for anything and y’all, y’all ain’t got to do everything. I said, no, no, we, we, we got this. Yeah. So we fixed him up. So, well, I, you know, he said he was tired. Y’all wore him out. Well, we was pretty tired too, but. Uh, but we, we clean up out yourself. We got there. It was the kitchen was clean. It wasn’t a wreck. Oh, no. We appreciate that. But all you Myrtle Beasts out there, besides everything went on with Lando, the Saturday before we came, um, to LA to come out here, Nancy was at her festival selling all her wares and jewelry and wreaths and all that stuff. And I had a couple of people that showed up because they saw that I was going to be there with Nancy. Yeah. But I had one special person that we met and her name is Mackenzie, but Mackenzie and her husband live here in California. Really? At the, uh, Marine base out down in the desert, wherever that’s at. Anyway, but she was there on vacation and she, she looked for me for about two hours before she found me and she was, she was so gracious. So Mackenzie, we’re giving you and her husband. His name is Kemper and he’s an officer in the Marines and thanks Kemper for everything you do and we’re giving y’all a holler out today. Holler out! Kemper. Dispatches from Myrtle Beach. McKenzie and Kemper. Interesting name. Never met a Kemper. And when I told her it was kinda new, I said he’s in the Marines and they do Semper Fi, so he’s Kemper Fi. Yep. That’s pretty good, so. That does pretty good. Yeah. Holler out! Good Mythical Evening is coming up! There’s less than one month until one of our favorite nights of the year. Okay, so I got a video from Steve and it’s a video that says how to paint a wall in 30 seconds. And what did Steve say about it? Do you think you could beat this guy, Charles, in time in view count? Well, Okay, what’s the view count? Uh, a hundred and seventy em, what that is. That’s a million. A hundred and seventy million. Okay, let’s see it. It’s popular! 30 seconds? Okay, so it looks like just a normal roller. And then, well he’s not doing much coverage. He’s already cut it out. Yeah, he’s already cut it out. That’s part of the, that’s part of your time is when you’re doing that. So he’s got a real thick roller. I got an 18 inch roller like that. Yeah, I mean that’s. This is not anything. Is something going to happen that I don’t anticipate? Because so far I’m bored and I’m not even you dad. How are you feeling right now? Well. Unimpressed? Tell me. I’d like to know what kind of paint he was using to put on the wall because it was sure going a long way. He didn’t have to dip anymore. So. So you’re impressed that that was like 30 seconds painting one wall but. But that won’t count cutting out and I mean that take several minutes. That’s right. That’s the, what he did was the easy part. I, I still don’t understand why this has 170 million views. I’ve basically seen you do this many times. Many times. Yeah, because you know, you have a roller that could get that much paint on it. Oh yeah, he must, he probably used an inch nap roller or something with it before it would hold a lot of paint. Yeah. But it don’t, see that, that don’t make it smooth and slick. I bet you if you, if you got a close up, it wouldn’t meet. The Neal Standard. It might not, no. But there’s, that video does not deserve 170 million views. Ain’t nothing to it. Nothing to it. Nothing, no. That’s it, that’s just like, I mean, I’d rather watch it, the next video of the paint drying. Yeah, let’s watch it dry. Yeah. For 30 seconds. It’d be just as good, it’d be just as miraculous. Well, I mean, how can that even happen? And this is on YouTube, it has 170 million views? Yep. I don’t understand. I need to start, I’m going to have to start taking Nancy to work with me making videos and then I’m going to have to put them on YouTube so, uh, cause if 170 million people is watching that. Yeah. What’s the comment? What are the comments saying under that? I don’t understand. I, I will give him some accolade. At least he did what he was supposed to, to start with. He cut everything out, then he rolled it before it would flow back in together. That’s sad. I’ll read you the top comments. Top comment is in two hours to do the edges. Exactly. This guy makes it look too easy. I’m mostly impressed by his infinite paint roller. Let’s just ignore the hours of prep work done beforehand. Exactly. Oh, yeah. That’s what I mean. His infinite paint roller. Yeah, he did. He went. He went hard with the paint on that thing, but he went across the whole wall. Well, you’re supposed to, when you put paint on a wall to start with, you’re supposed to roll it in a Z and then spread it out. That’s what, and he did. Yeah, and he did. So, and then he could spread it out and smooth it, but I mean. Painting a wall in 30 seconds. I mean, I guess what we’re learning is if you’re not a professional, people are going to be wowed with just a professional painter doing what you do every day. I’m gonna start giving Nancy a new job and let her start videoing me and putting it on YouTube. Wow, say, find a wow somebody. Yeah, but we gotta work on, we gotta work on the, on the cinematography. Yeah. Can’t be shaky now. Okay. No, but we got, we got to try that. But anybody, hey, any of you Myrtle Beasts out there, if you want to do what he did and what I do, you can go to the store and get you an 18 inch roller and a pan and it’ll go in and do the same thing he did. Ain’t nothing to it. Ain’t nothing to it. And, and we’re not, and we’re happy to get impressed. We welcome being impressed. We’re not hard to please here. But you gotta do better than just that. So we’ve got, I know we’ve got a special guest. We’ve kind of been sitting on, we’ve kind of been sitting on it a little bit. But it’s somebody’s special day. Yes it is. As we’re recording this. Right now she’s sitting here watching and she’s getting ready to come on our show is my beautiful wife That’s today’s her birthday October the 1st. Oh my goodness, and we got something special It’s time for another edition of Nancy is he behaving? Happy birthday to you. I’m gonna give you the full rendition dad. We got away Until tonight with our big birthday, birthday dinner plans. But right now we’re doing, um, not the newlywed game. This isn’t your anniversary, but this is the newly wed game, which in some way is the best we could do in, in, um, celebrating your birthday is how well, how well does dad know you? All right. I got these questions. You got to see if you match up. So it is pretty much newlywed game. All right. Nancy, how you feeling? I’m feeling good. You look great. Thank you. You look spry. You’ve got, you’ve got some, some shiny in your hair. Fairy hair. Fairy hair. Is that something that comes with age or is that a um, is it glitter? It’s glitter. It’s glitter. I noticed it. Yesterday. Sparkly. Sparkly. Yeah. Alright. I have that naturally. What did you do on your first date? You don’t have to write the whole thing, just write enough so we’ll know that you’re not just copying your partner’s answer. What’d you do on your first date? They’re both writing quickly, so it seems like they know this one. I would guess shag. That’s what I’m gonna guess. Dad, what did you say? Hold it up. I took her to Okay, you don’t have to hold it. It’s Davidson Steakhouse. Davidson Steakhouse. Alright. Is this a friend of yours? David’s son? No, it’s just a A place. Steakhouse in Sanford. Alright, what Nancy, what did you say here? Dinner at Steakhouse. But you didn’t say Davidson. Davidson. Did you not remember that? It wasn’t that memorable? Dad, I remembered, but I couldn’t remember the name of it on the spot. Well, it’s your birthday, so I’m not gonna hold it against you. But, Dad, does that hurt your feelings that she didn’t remember? Well, she knew I turned her to the steakhouse. But she didn’t know. What did she order? Steak. Okay, safe bet. Um, alright. This one, Nancy, I’m a test you. Do you know dad’s biggest pet peeve biggest pet peeve for dad? Okay. So dad, you’re answering this about yourself. What’s your biggest pet peeve? All right. Hold them up together. Go. All right. What did you say? Nancy being late, going somewhere, being late, going somewhere. And dad, what did you say? Being late. Or not being on time. Oh. And how does he get? Does he get, does he get flustered? Yes. Does he say, well, we won’t even go? No, he didn’t say that. What’s so wrong about being a little late? Haven’t you ever heard of the term fashionably late, dad? I don’t like being late for nothing. If you, if somebody tells you, you’re supposed to be there at five o’clock, you’re supposed to be there a little bit before five o’clock. What if it’s a party, though? Is that different? It’d probably be alright being a little late and making a nice little entrance at the party or something. That’s right. Because you don’t want to be the first person at the party. Nancy, do you like being late, or does it just happen? It just happens. He can be ready in two minutes. Uh huh. Okay. In two minutes after he gets out of bed, he’s ready to go. Splashes water on his head and face and This is a source of conflict. Well sometimes he’s sitting in the recliner in the living room. Does he say Heated up cause I’m late. It’s time! We’re gonna be late! Does he, does he yell stuff from the recliner? Yes. Are you ready? And then I’ll tell him, okay Lincoln. Okay, yep. That would be papa. Yeah. Making a reference to daddy. He was, he was, he had short fuse. I Had a pet peeve with being late for stuff too, and I would say it’s disrespectful But now I kind of like being late for things. I don’t know. I’m changing a little bit. It’s fun Well, most of the time when we’re trying to get ready like you, you know, if something’s Not just a party, but like when we go to church, you, it starts at 11 o’clock or Sunday school starts at 9 30 or you don’t want to roll in halfway through the while the scripture reading, you won’t get the full context. They can tell you anything then, you know? So, and then, uh, like if you’re going to meet somebody to go eat somewhere, Yep, I like being there when they get there a little bit before. All right. All right. All right But don’t don’t get don’t get angry. Look at him. Look how angry he is right now. All right now We got to figure out how well, you know, Nancy. What is Nancy’s guilty pleasure? Guilty pleasure. This is a dangerous one because it has the word pleasure in it. And guilt. Guilty pleasure. Making dad late for Sunday school. She loves it. All right. Hold him up. Don’t be reading hers. Just hold it up. What did you say, dad? I said chocolate. Well, you wrote cho late. Well. Hold it back up. Hold it back up. You can’t change it now. I don’t know what cho late is. Chocolate. But see what you wrote. I mean I mean, C H O So I didn’t spell it right. I spelled chocolate. Well, you said cho late. It was wrong either way because you said Buying shoes. Buying shoes. I mean, that one didn’t even cross my mind. My other one was gonna be her eating popcorn late at night. Oh, you can tell she feels guilty? She can’t stop though? Oh no, she loves some popcorn. She loves some chocolate too. What about cho late? Cho late. Now, so, now that she said it Do you agree? Oh, uh, one hundred percent, because we just painted our bedrooms in, in the walk in closet that was in there at the bottom. Yep. We probably, but she, I, in her defense, she keeps up with them, but, because all her shoes is in, not the boxes they came in, but these plastic boxes, plastic boxes where. You can see what color the shoes are. Oh, so you got Tupperware shoe boxes, see through? They’re Walmart shoe boxes, clear, and I put them in color coordinated stacks. Wow. And so there’s about a hundred pair in there. Good gracious. So we had to get all them out so I could paint, but we, we got it all out. So I know I should have thought about shoes. Cause I mean, did you put them all back or did you use it as an opportunity to I got rid of some. Okay. I don’t believe you. If dad could splurge on one thing without thinking twice, what would it be? I wonder what, I don’t know what I’m going to guess. I can’t spell it. Golfing is, um, expensive. So I’m gonna get something golfing related. Let’s see what you hold them up. A 55 Chevrolet. Old car is what she said. Judges, is that specific enough? 55 Chevrolet is the correct answer. Old car is kind of the judgy way to write it. Yes. It’s kind of, maybe cheating. Why a 55 Chevrolet specifically? Because I owned three of them when I was growing up. Oh, okay. Nostalgia. Yeah. And I mean, I just, it’s my favorite car. And if he got one of these, Nancy, how would you feel about it? And again, the money’s not an object. I wouldn’t mind. Cause you’re still driving that Corvette of yours. Y’all both a Corvette enthusiast as well. Yeah. That’s how they let you into North Myrtle beach is there’s a gate. And if you drive a Corvette, they automatically let you in. No, they let you in down there. So they pay, so you can pay more taxes to them. That’s the reason they let you in. Okay. Yeah, that’s right. Um, all right, dad, what is Nancy’s favorite ice cream flavor? This should be easy. Come on. I probably can’t spell it. Well, I’m not gonna, I’m not gonna pick you apart for your spelling. I would never do that. All right, let’s see what you got. Chocolate. All right, let’s see what you wrote though. See, you still wrote Cholate. It’s just like, I gave you a second chance because chocolate is the right answer. Like, look, look at what Nancy wrote. Yeah, and it looks a lot better than mine, too. Right, because it’s, because it’s spelled correctly. It’s chocolate. So, I mean, hold up what you’ve done again. And just say that. Chocolate. No! Read it! Chocolate. There’s no, no! See, cho Sound it out! C H O Cho Chocolate. No, C H O. How does that sound? C H O. Cho. Cho. Clut. No, there’s no clut. It’s just L A T E. What’s, what’s L A T E? Late. Late. Late. Put that together and you got Cho late. Cho late. Twice. I’m gonna have to end, okay, alright, erase that. I’m gonna go home and teach him how to write chocolates. Alright, here’s, here’s another one. This one’s for both of you. What is a famous dessert treat that can come in different variations from dark to milk to semi sweet? Read that again. What is a sweet dessert treat that can come in options including dark, milk, and semi sweet? All right, let’s see what you wrote down. Uh, Nancy has written milkshake and dad has written ice cream. You’re both wrong. The word I was looking for was cho late. Come on guys. Dark chocolate, milk chocolate, semi sweet chocolate. Yes, that’s true. Chocolate! Cho late! All right, I’m sorry. What is dad’s ideal vacation? Y’all go on a lot of vacations. You go on a lot of trips. I know for a fact that when you’re leaving us, you’re immediately going. To the keys, that’d be correct, so you’re not even going home first, but again, this is a work trip. This is not vacation. So you might, it’s good that you plan a vacation after this, because especially with this hard time as I’m giving you. Okay, so what’s dad’s ideal vacation? All right, hold him up in 321. Uh, you said Aruba, and dad is saying, what? Holland and the Caribbean. Okay, okay, and Caribbean. Okay, you know what? It’s not correct. You didn’t, you didn’t pronounce it. You pronounced it right, and you wrote it in a way that reflects that. So, I have, it’s not correct, but it is close enough that I really can’t make fun of you for how you wrote.
