this weekend I made my debut as assistant men’s basketball coach for first graders let’s talk about that good morning Chia Lincoln it is Monday January 10th 2011 and we are moving at the speed of conversation was that a new slogan yeah I was working on some slogans for the good morning Chia Lincoln Show I also had one about it not having any cuts but I’m still working on that one cutlass cutlass supreme like the car leave the cuts to the emotionally confused teenagers no doubt just fighting link nations you’re not going to get anywhere on YouTube talking like that I’m sorry so what are we talking about you said that I said let’s talk about that and you were talking about being a basketball coach oh yeah you were there I remember I was it isn’t like link you know we have separate lives we have separate wives we have separate children mm-hmm we have traded families two or three times just for expend on experimental reasons but it did not work out well that was another TV pilot but somebody somebody else went with that it was called life swap yeah and we got in trouble for copyright infringement no but on the weekend we our lives it’s healthy for our weekend lives to pretty much be separate hell it it but there are occasional intersections of our weekend lives we live in the same small town Fuquay Varina North Carolina and we have kids in the same basketball league right and this is the first time any of our kids so my daughter and my son and your son who is in age between my daughter and my son all are playing basketball for the first time on the same day on different teams at different times but you know the premier it’s not a tournament what it is just games it’s just game day that Saturday Saturday morning we go in I don’t see I don’t even know what to call it like everybody’s confused and trust me when you watch the games begin it’s 100 percent clear that all of the kids are confused yes it’s like they had never seen two two basketball goals at opposite ends of a court they had no clue what to do well and as assistant coach you know I felt responsible for this I felt responsible for our team’s mediocre performance well you didn’t you didn’t look very responsible it’s like I walk in and I see all these kids and some coaches and then you see this this guy who’s like three feet taller than everybody else goofy looking at his hair standing up and he’s got on like a a parka and shorts parka a hoody a hoody and I’m the coach with the hoodie and mythical shoes I mean the mythical shoes are high-top so I’m gonna wear them out there I’m gonna get these kids interested I mean it’s advertising opportunity first of all the last time I saw you in shorts I think was like in the 90s so that that I felt weird it was a sight it was like walking in on your like one of your parents like in in their IDs getting dressed it’s like oh I didn’t mean to come in here kind of like walking into the gym and seeing Rhett in shorts kind of made me it’s kind of creeping me out as a good thing well I wore shorts because I’ve been wearing shorts to practice I’m like okay this is kids basketball league what I’m going to do I show up and I’m the only coach in shorts every other coach has on this collared shirt like the the custom basketball league shirt yeah and jeans tucked you know in the in the shirt tucked into the jeans it’s as if they could leave and go in and get some work done Yeah right so I was totally unprepared but my coach coach Patrick our head coach who’s also incredibly tall we looked like we should be like definitely dominating out there he could have been like you’re a basketball uncle the coaches don’t play we just coach the kids but you didn’t know that so we can only go so far our basketball skill only translates so much you were dressed ready to play but coach Patrick comes up he’s and we had to take team pictures it was team picture day he said uh of course I put he gives me the shirt I put it on of course I’m keeping it untucked I don’t tuck the shirt and he says coach Rhett you’re gonna have to tuck your shirt in I know it goes against your mantra but you know there’s like a dress code or something yeah you got a cup you got it because the kids have to tuck in their shirt because if the if the coach has had their their church untucked the next thing you know someone will be smoking and then they’d be shooting up out in front of the kids and you know they’d be bringing guns and then the kids would start doing that and then the world would fall apart it all starts with keeping your shirt tucked in people so you so you swallowed your pride but you kept the park on and I noticed that it was kind of it was kind of zipped up a little bit at the bottom well the reason I did that is because I was not aware that my coaching shirt was going to be Navy and I had black shorts on so I was going to be the funny that you’re thinking a guy out there with black shorts and a navy shirt tucked into him I mean it’s just like I got a reputation to maintain me look at my hair cut link yeah it was like the haircut totally didn’t didn’t fit is I’m thinking about parting my hair ever you ever just put it down just just you know just lay it down next time but the reality is though the kids were horrible we had my kids on watch we had a great time and the kids you know what it’s the first time that any of them have ever played most of them ever played organized basketball you know we we didn’t expect much I expected a little bit more but you know something I think it’s good it’s going to be great this is going to be a great experience for all parents and all children involved I’m have to sit somewhere where I can’t see you out of the corner of my eye so I can really just focus on this is about my kids and not critiquing your your fashion sense at every basketball game because I don’t I could be wrong but I don’t think that’s what it’s about well but next time I will look really good though next time I’ll be one of the best looking coaches out there but just work just work on like actually doing some good coaching I saw one of your tall charts were the look in your eye they’re linked one of your players go to half court and then just heave the ball and then I saw him look over to the Sun we were like what we were clapping like what why did you shoot he was like well I was open it’s like yeah but you were at the other end of the court it was like like buzzer beater they’re six years old they’re six years old it’s like pass it to somebody different you know we played sports growing up you know but here’s the difference a lot has changed since I played recreational sports first of all the way our league works is there’s a rotation set up throughout the whole season so that every child will play the exact same amount that’s that’s a good thing I don’t know I you know I think it’s great but when when I was a kid if you weren’t any good you didn’t play seeing I was going to tell you we’ll see I see I didn’t play so I didn’t know if I was any good yeah that’s not true I just wasn’t any good so I didn’t play I’m with you on that but how do you think I mean but how did that affect you long-term because I think the idea is I play t-ball once they took the tea away yeah you know first of all there was no recreation basketball when we were kids in buoys Korea it was it was baseball in soccer which you know I excelled at soccer think what you will of it all of that but you know everybody played t-ball but once they took the tee away they also took the players who sucked away and that included me it was like I’m out of here man he’s gone I’m gone you know they should have like started a branch league where I see the writing on the wall know what they should have done for kids like you Linc they all should they all should have had a separate league that continued with the T through high school yeah how would I love that you know t-ball for high schoolers so everyone can be cool and accepted let’s do that it’s that’s what they should do they shouldn’t have this forced rotation of all the kids plan they should take the kids who they should be the suck League and all those kids should go and you could be an all-star in the suck League and then you’re going to be a better person when you get older well or they could just you know I think what happened is those just became study groups and those people just became really smart and didn’t worry as much about athletics and bettering themselves ok Society works fine the way it is you know the question is this Chia Lincoln work the way he’s supposed to work you know I was nervous leaving you I’m going to speak directly to you Lincoln over this weekend but you know it didn’t get too cold in here yeah but it kind of got nasty early stages of giannis are nasty and almost alien like as if little alien snakes are growing very slowly emerging from their eggs well hopefully the roots are coming out like I see a root growing over here on a sideburn and I see do the ones on the nose or not growing it I know we’re getting lots of comments on this that’s the update on G Lincoln alright and one last thing you know on a serious note over the weekend the shootings in Arizona we just wanted to say our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the victims and those that are still fighting for their lives including the congresswoman we hope that she gets better soon see you tomorrow see you Tuesday
