GMM 1741: Blind Exotic Sugar Taste Test

How well do we know our sugars? – Let’s talk about that. (upbeat music) Good Mythical Morning! – Rhett, it is so nice to see your sweet, sweet, overly bearded face. – Ah, that is very sweet of you, Link, but things are about to get a little bit sweeter because number one, a portion of today’s episode was paid for by Candy Crush Saga and two, we just had a bunch of sugars delivered to our homes. Yes, at the time of recording this we’re still in quarantine. But you know what, that don’t matter because we’re gonna play a sweet game with some sweet, sweet sugar. It’s time for Can Two Semi-Hairy Guys Guess the Sugar without Their Eyes? Okay, we’re gonna be trying six different sugars– – Oh yeah. – And those sugars are: demerara, who I dated in high school and is also known as partially refined cane sugar. – Never heard of it. – Coconut sugar, date sugar, maple sugar, palm sugar, and granulated honey, honey. – Okay, so we’re going to be determining what’s the best ’cause we’re gonna be rating each of these on a scale of one to 10, but we’re gonna be totally blindfolded so we’re also competing to see who can identify the most correctly. In the end, the winner is named Sugar Daddy, meaning the other guy has to refer to him as Sugar Daddy throughout Good Mythical More. – Well, I hope I win. Let’s taste some sugar! (upbeat music) – As you can see, we can’t. – Okay, every sugar is gonna be brought to us on the patent pending Sugar Spoon, which is a spoon specifically designed for tasting and guessing sugars. – Yeah, our boys are gonna be spoon feeding us sugars. – Yeah, all right, let’s bring the first one in. Shep, bring it in. – Lando, bring it in. Okay. (Rhett grunting) That’s a lot of sugar. – Well, usually I have to search for it, but you just… – Did you get gagged? – Yeah. – I got a nice little spoon feeding, it was ginger. Now this, ooh. – Wow, that has a very molasses-ey taste to it, but molasses-ey is not one of the options. – It’s interesting that it, oh it taste so good, but I mean it’s so flavorful. It is kind of crazy. – That’s a good sugar, sugar. – I think now we gotta rank it on a scale of one to 10. I don’t know if it’s that I just ate some saltiness in order to get going and I’m just happy, but I wanna give that a solid eight. – It’s a really good sugar because it doesn’t just taste like sugar, it tastes like something and sugar. – Yeah, I think I got my guess, I’m ready. – Okay, I’m gonna go with an eight as well, I think that is a good ranking. And I’m ready for my guess. – [Stevie] Okay, here we go. Three, two, one. – Maple. – Granulated honey. – Oh, you think it’s honey? No, dude, you said basically it tastes like, what’d you say, Toronto? – Oh is, oh maple’s an option? – Yeah. – Yeah, it’s definitely maple, you’re definitely right. You’re definitely right. – I don’t know, sometimes we just don’t know. I’m liking this episode. Gimme some more sugar, gimme some sugar. – All right, bring it in. – Oh, bigger grains. This is like, this is not finely ground. Ooh, and it– – Wow. – It has kind of a cotton candy kind of vibe to it, or is that just me? – Man, it taste a lot like the last one. – No, this one’s not nearly as mapley. To me it’s very cotton candy-ey, it’s a little, I mean, it just taste like normal sugar to me. What score do you like? – It’s not as good as the last one, I’m gonna give it a six. It’s good sugar though, I mean, sugar’s good. – I’m giving it a five. – [Stevie] You guys ready to guess? – No, no not yet. – I think I’m ready. – Okay, I feel okay about this guess, not great. – [Stevie] Three, two, one. – Honey. – Demerara. – Oh, so you’re just going with like cane, sugar cane Demerara and I’m going with the honey from the bee. (gentle music) Before we go any further, this portion of today’s episode is an ad by Candy Crush Saga. Candy Crush Saga is featuring real players inside of the game in a special event that celebrates candy players and the reasons that they love to crush. – Each week there will be a new event that features five players. When you pass each level you’ll win rewards and if you complete them all, you’ll unlock a booster bundle. – A what? – A booster bundle! – Oh, you know I’m gonna be getting that booster bundle ’cause there is nothing more relaxing than sitting in my favorite spot on the couch, by the window, and playing some Candy Crush Saga. Rhett, where do you play? – Oh, I like to play right outside that window at your house, I’m surprised you never noticed me. – Click the link in the description below to get your free download of Candy Crush Saga. – Let us know in the comments what you think of their in-game features and where you like to play. – And thanks again to Candy Crush for sponsoring this portion of today’s episode. All right boys. – All right. Bring in the next sugar! – Sugar, sugar. Mm-hmm, oh. This one’s powdery. – Oh. – I got a clump and a lot of powder. – Whoa, whoa, whoa. – When it gets wet in my mouth, is it a weird sandy consistency for you? – Yeah, ’cause it’s the same sugar that you’re tasting. – What is wrong with this sugar? The consistency is a nightmare. – It kind of turned, you know, you said the thing about cotton candy on the last one, but this one actually did the cotton candy thing in my mouth. It turned into like a substance, like a gooeyness before it dissolved, you know what I’m saying? – I disagree. It still hasn’t dissolved, I’ve got a lot of grittiness happening, I’m not loving this. I think I know what it is, but I’m gonna give it, I’m gonna give it a three. – I’m gonna give it a four ’cause it still is sugar but it’s not my favorite sugar. I do think I know what this is though. – We’re ready. – [Stevie] Okay, here we go. Three, two, one. – Date. – Date. Yeah, that’s definitely– – I was about to say honey again ’cause I was thinking this is something that a bee would scrape off his leg, but I ended up changing it to date in the last second. – Hold on, hold on, hold on. First of all, it’s definitely date. The second of all, you think that bees get honey from scraping their legs, man? – No, but I think that what they scrape off their legs gets on the honey. – Okay. (laughs) (gentle music) – You know what it’s time for? More sugar! – Whoo, whoo. – More sugar. Ooh, that’s some hard sugar. That sugar has got some granulation to it. It is– – It’s soft. – I think it’s hard. Are our boys giving us– – Man, we might be tasting different sugar. – Lando did you give me number four? – I mean the quality control on this episode, is that number four Shepherd? – [Shepherd] Yeah, number four. – I mean, it could be, it’s not Shepherd’s fault, it might be my wife or your wife’s fault. Or maybe you just have different– – Uh-uh, do not throw my wife under the bus. – [Rhett’s Wife] I did it right, I checked it five times! – My wife just yelled at me and said she checked it five times, she did it right. So I think maybe– – Are you telling me that what’s in your mouth– – have a different mouth. – Is it totally dissolved in your mouth? – It’s totally dissolved and what I’m saying about it is that it was big granules and they like gave way to my mouth, like, really easily. – Mine was big granules– – And you said mine are hard. – Mine did not give way to my mouth, but they’re gone. They did taste good. – Well maybe you got a weak mouth. You got a weak mouth, I mean, maybe that’s it. It just, it’s the strength of your mouth. Which I thought your mouth was stronger than mine ’cause it’s way bigger. – I’m gonna give it a seven, I like it. – You know what, I’m giving it a seven as well. It’s a good sugar, I like the softness, I like the big granules, but what the heck is it? – ‘Cause if it’s coconut or palm it expect it to taste more like the islands. All right, I’m ready. – [Stevie] Okay, three, two, one. – Palm. – Granulated honey. I think that’s granulated honey. – Well, it was granulated, but I don’t think it was honey. (gentle music) – All right, bring in the sugar, Shep. – Uh-huh, mm-hmm. Ooh, what, what, is this a joke? This is a spice. – Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. It tastes like it’s got cayenne pepper in it. – It’s got Cajun spice in it. And then after a while, ew, it’s like, this is like a steak rub, like a sugar steak rub. – And what would that come from? – Oh my gosh. – What would that spicy taste come from? – I gotta give this a one. – I kind of like it, it’s unexpected, man. – What? – Yeah. It threw me a little curve ball, I’m giving it a seven. – Oh my gosh, you crazy, you just like weird flavored sugars, man. But do you know what it is? – I have no idea. I have no idea what could contribute to this particular– – Yeah, I don’t know. – Taste. – Okay, ready. – Hold on, I mean, where would you get. Okay, I’m gonna do, I don’t know how I feel about this, but. – [Stevie] Okay, three, two, one. – Palm. – Granulated honey. – Oh, see you’re thinking you’re tasting bee legs. – I think that’s I’m getting something– – falling off bee legs– – That only, yeah, I think I’m getting something that only a bee could have added to the sugar. – Yeah, but honey doesn’t taste like that. You ever eaten honey? – No, but you don’t know where bees have been. Do you know where all bees on the world have been? You don’t know. (gentle music) – Let’s taste that sugar. – All right, bring it in. – Ooh! I thought that, now, if this was soft for you we definitely have if sugars. It’s a hard sugar. – Yeah, this is the first hard sugar. – This is like gravely sugar. – [Stevie] Good lord, Rhett, your hair right now is just really reacting to the sugar. – Really, watch. (mumbling) That’s a good sugar, I like it. I like it when it feels like I might have just bitten into some rocks. – I know, and it tastes just like the first one which, you know, I was convinced and then convinced you that it was maple. So now I’m kind of torn because I really like the flavor of this one, but I would say it’s got a syrupy, pancake, syrupy type situation. – Well, I think they all go in that direction just because they’re all sugar. – Well, but it’s a mapley, from a tree kind of vibe. Ooh, maybe I just gave myself a hint. I’m gonna, this is a milder version of the first one, I’m still gonna give it an eight, and I, you know what, I’m gonna give it a nine. – You know, this is my favorite one so far, but I don’t think I can, I don’t know, what’s the highest score that I’ve given so far, I think it was an eight. I think I’m just gonna give this one an eight because I feel like there’s still some sugars out there in the world that I will give a nine and a 10, I just haven’t met them today. – And I am boldly putting it at the top, I believe, whatever this thing is, but what it is, I do not know. Okay, I’ll guess. – I’ve got a guess. – [Stevie] Okay, three, two, one. – Coconut. – Palm. I was gonna say coconut or palm but I went with palm. – All right, tabulate those results. – [Stevie] You can remove your blindfold as I’m refreshing the scores here. – Okay, Stevie, let us have it. Don’t hold back. – [Stevie] Okay, Link, you first then. You have a score of two. – Oh wow, I thought you were gonna have like four, man. – Shoot man, I don’t know. Two might beat you. – [Stevie] And Rhett, you have a score of two as well. – See, this is tough, man. – Dang it. – So looks like we have Sugar Daddy’s on our hands. (dog barking) – Jade is celebrating. Hey, it was me, Jade, I knocked on the table ’cause Rhett didn’t beat me, it’s fine. I shouldn’t have knocked on the, come here, it’s okay. – [Stevie] And with a sugar score of 17, the one sugar I did not want to say ’cause it’s hard to pronounce, Demerara is your favorite sugar. – That’s because– – Demerara! Yes! – It’s still sugar cane. – Yeah. – That’s why. – And coming in– – I should have guessed that. – [Stevie] At second place with 16 points is coconut sugar, which is the very first sugar that you had. – It tastes more mapley than the last one. – Yeah, the lesson that we learned today is that sugar should just be made out of what sugar’s already made out of, which I guess is sugar cane. – All right, thanks for subscribing and clicking that bell. – You know what time it is. – Hi, my name is Stephanie, I live in Indianapolis, Indiana and I’m baking muffins and dropping them off on friend’s doorsteps.
