In-N-Out versus Shake Shack. Let’s get it on. – Let’s talk about that. (gentle upbeat music) – Good Mythical Morning! – Quick heads up that this is the final week of the Monday, Wednesday, Friday spring break schedule. We’re gonna be back to droppin’ new episodes Monday through Friday five times a week. – Oh yeah? – Starting this coming Monday, okay? – Back to five! – Yeah. – Now, we’ve had some heated Food Feud episodes, but this one, hoo boy, it’s gettin’ real today. It’s a big ‘ole East Coast, West Coast rivalry. LA County’s own In-N-Out Burger versus The Big Apple’s Shake Shack. – Okay, on their respective coasts of origin, both Shake Shack and In-N-Out have lines that wrap around the block or cars that wrap around the building twice in some cases. But luckily Shake Shack has opened up a few locations around here. So today we can settle the burger and shake showdown. – And even though I’ve witnessed many conversations that I thought were gonna turn into knife fights over this- – Yeah, that happens. – The restaurants themselves haven’t actually talked any trash about each other publicly. – Well, it’s just not becoming for a restaurant that puts Bible verses on its cups, Link. That’s what’s holdin’ them back. But you’re right. They have some very opinionated fans that have feuded online on their behalf for years. – Yeah, here’s a tweet. – “I have eaten at In-N-Out like 100 times. I live in Cali. I like Shake Shack better.” – Oh, okay. “Dear Shake Shack, my foreign wife liked In-N-Out better. West Coast plus one.” Oh, bringing out the foreign wife? – Yeah, I mean, if you have a domestic and a foreign? – Yeah, I mean, oh good. (Link laughing) What do you, huh? – I don’t, I don’t, I don’t know. I don’t know what they have. – Yeah. – Here’s another one. “In-N-Out is literally awful, Shake Shack better. Matter of fact, I prefer Wendy’s over In-N-Out.” – Oh, come on now. – Ouch. – “Shake Shack’s patties and obviously shakes are good, but the rest of the burger sucks as well as the fries. No one wants to hear that In-N-Out has the most consistently decent menu.” – Okay, lots of factors here. – Settle down everybody! We got this. It’s time for Food Feuds: In-N-Out verses Shake Shack. All right, we’re gonna taste and compare items from these two iconic burger joints, rating each one on a scale of one to 10. And this includes some secret menu items. – Do we have to, man? Oh my gosh. I hate my job. – This is a tough job. – The restaurant with the most points will be dubbed the Baron of Buns and will win a chance to sponsor a future GMM episode. (hard rock riffing) – Bring on the burgers and such. – Hey, what’s up with it? – What is up with it? – I’m In-N-Out Ian, and I’m a Virgo with a Taurus rising. So I’ll be like your burger, like king, right? So this a- – Don’t bring that into this. – This is a cheeseburger, all right? It’s got all beef patty, lettuce, cheese, onions, and like special sauce, but no tomato on yours. – Thank you, man, thank you. – $3.30 so it’s pretty cheap. – Taurus rising. – Hello, hello, hello. – He’s very California. – I am Shake Shack Shana. I’m gonna make this quick. I gotta talk to my landlord. I’m not not saying it’s bedbugs but it could, could be. – Oh. – Okay. – All right, so this is our Shack Burger, it’s got cheese, lettuce, tomato, and Shack sauce for 6.59. Bye, bye. – Oh, wow. – Bed bugs are bad. – So we got like the California, New York thing. – New York gal. – Well, I mean, we’re California boys now. Do you have a preconceived notion? Do you wanna share? ‘Cause I definitely do when it comes to burgers. – I don’t want to share it ’cause I want to forget it. Like I’ll just say, I enjoy both of these places and just because I enjoy things about one versus the other doesn’t mean I can’t eat it both, ’cause I’m a burger lovin’ boy. – Okay, I’ll let that speak for me as well. – I usually get the Double-Double, so I haven’t gotten a single from In-N-Out in a long time. – Man, that’s got some special sauce on it. – [Link] These things have been served up since 1948. The cheese is strong. – A lot of people are not as- – That onion is in every single bite. – [Rhett] Full coverage. – Like I always have to go in and I, here’s what I do. – Yeah, you do the things I don’t. – I pull off some of the onion. – I just eat it. – There’s always, I like onions but I like half as many onions- – You’re literally throwing them on my burger. – As they put on there. – I mean, it was already annoying and offensive but now it’s just gotten like, incensing. – That’s the right amount of onion, In-N-Out. Half as much. Sorry. – Yeah. So, but what I’ve noticed is that a lot of people, they hear people talk about In-N-Out Burger so much and then they show up, it’s still a fast food burger. It’s not gonna be like some gourmet thing. Like the expectation is set so high for people coming in and out from out of town. You know what I’m sayin’? – Yeah. – It’s a very good burger. It’s still a fast food burger. – [Link] So slow your roll. – Now my opinion about the Shake Shack burger is that it feels, my experience is usually that it’s an elevated experience, almost like a diner burger versus a fast food burger. Does that make sense? – Yeah. – I mean, look at the beef, man. The beef has got this like, natural thing happening. Like they didn’t ball it up too hard, you know what I’m sayin’? Like, look at that beef just spilling out, man. – Yeah, but then you, and you got this, it’s a pocket, you know? It’s kinda like you eat from this side. The thing I don’t like about it in terms of that pocket is that your last bite is just bread. Unless you go for that first, but you don’t want to. – You can break that seam. I prefer the bread and the beef. – The beef is salty. It’s more about the beef first. Actually with the In-N-Out burger, I get cheese first, then beef. I get beef first over here. – Nobody wants that. – And then cheese. This is such a good burger. – Do you want me to pull some pieces of my burger out and throw it on your burger? Just to, just to make it even? – I banked ’em off of your burger. – Okay, okay, it’s cool. I wasn’t gonna do it anyway. These are both excellent burgers. But I’m gonna have to give the In-N-Out burger a seven, a seven out of 10. – Yep, I have my numbers in my head. I’m not copying you. – I am gonna get another bite. – I’m gonna give this a seven, and over here with Shake Shack, I’m gonna have to give this burger a nine. It’s an amazingly good tasting burger. The burger is the star. The cheese only helps it. The bun is so soft and nice. – I’m not copying you but I’m gonna give it a nine as well. – It’s simp, it’s it’s just simple. – Man, it’s so good. – And, and luscious. – So the burger round goes to Shake Shack. (rock music riffing) – And of course now, fry time. – Hello, these are our Shake Shack fries. They’re 3.39, put ketchup on ’em or don’t, live your life. They’re crinkle cut, bye. – She said don’t live your life? – She’s terse. – Hey, wassup? All right, so these are handmade fries. I made them myself with a potato crusher guy. – Yep. – They’re like- – [Link] You crushed the potato? – Sunflower oil is what is cooked in and it only costs 2.10, so, you guys like flowers? – Yeah, yeah, and the sun. – Yeah, man. – Same, dudes, same. (crew laughing) – So they pride themselves on the freshness, right? – Yeah. You’re driving by, you look through the window see ’em cutting them. You see actual potatoes. And listen, you gotta eat ’em first. I mean, I’m not gonna-. – They go bad fast. – Hold that against you. You eat a lot of the fries and then you get into your burger ’cause you don’t want ’em sitting around. – My issue is it’s just potato. – It’s very, it’s real tasting. – It’s so pure. – Yeah. – I think I just spit some out. It’s so pure that it’s too pure for my dirty soul. You know what I’m sayin’? Like, I want something else to be happening. I’ve never been a huge fan of ’em. I like the animal style ones when you put stuff on top of ’em. – Hold your horses on that. They’re very potato-y, they’re so fresh. I don’t hate it. – The Shake Shack fries interestingly, okay, so they got the crinkle cut. Now they actually started off as frozen and then in 2013 they thought, oh this doesn’t really fit with our brand and so they went to a fresh hand cut fry. The people, the customers hated it. They actually went back to pre-frozen crinkle cut fries and then a staff member informed the chain that by freezing fries, moisture gets trapped inside the potato that helps maintain a fluffy, soft interior. So they’re actually making the case that frozen is better. What do you think about the crinkle? – I’ve never really loved a crinkle fry because I’ve always loved like a McDonald’s style, really thin fry. And then you can get some that are crispy. You can get some that are floppy. Crinkle fries never spoke to me. Do you like ’em? – The reason that crinkle fries speak to me is there’s more surface area to get fried and so there’s more crispy per square inch. – If you get a floppy one of these, it’s gross to me. But for some reason, the skinny floppy isn’t. – These aren’t my favorite French fries. – I taste more of the fry than the potato. With this I taste more of the potato- – I’m not going in for potato. – Than the oil. – If I want a potato, I’ll just take a potato and bite it like an apple, like I do every Saturday night. – All of that being said, for the In-N-Out fries, I mean they can’t, they don’t hold a candle to the McDonald’s fries that I’m comparing them to. I’m gonna give them a five. – I’m gonna give them a four. – Over here, I’m gonna give, I’m not impressed with these at all. They’re not horrible but I’m not gonna go easy on ’em. I’m gonna give them a four. – I’m gonna give the Shake Shack fries a six, because do like them but there’s a lot of improvement that could be made. – Yeah, nothing’s wowin’ us here. Seems to be quite a draw. (rock music riffing) – Before we move on to milkshakes, real quick. One of the things that we do every year for the last few years on the Mythical Society- (Ian choking) (Rhett and Link laughing) – Oh damn, you got something you wanna say? – [Ian] Oh, I got, sorry, I got wig hair in my mouth and I almost puked. – Okay, before we move on to milkshakes, real quick. One of the things that we’ve done in the past few years on the Mythical Society as part of our quarterly collectible is a exclusive vinyl release, right? We’ve done some of our songs. We did Lionel Richie, we did Merle Haggard. – Music. – And this year- – Music. – We’re doing an exclusive vinyl release, Rhett & Link Sing Brooks & Dunn in the Year 3000. – We’ve covered our favorite Brooks & Dunn song, “Neon Moon,” and we also gave you some boot scootin’ boogie on here, but we’ve futurized it in its production. So we’re very excited about this. We’ve been teasin’ this whole like duo thing. We got a lot of Mythical Beasts have been trying to figure out who we’re doing. – Well, this is the doing. – Askin’ for Brooks & Dunn. Going back to our passion from high school, lovin’ some Kix and some Ronnie, y’all. So if you wanna get in on this collectible item, you gotta join the 3rd Degree Monthly by April 30th or 3rd Degree Quarterly or Annual by June 30th. Visit mythicalsociety.com for details. – Yes. – Oh, that’s wassup, that’s wassup, that’s wassup. (Rhett laughing) So this is our, In-N-Out’s vanilla shake. It’s made with real ice cream and it costs 2.70, and it’s cold, which is a temperature that I’ve never experienced and do not plan to. (Rhett and Link laughing) – Hey, I’m servin’ here. – SoCal. – Hello, this is our Shake Shack vanilla shake for 5.79. It’s hand spun every time. Not sometimes, every time, I gotta go, Taxi! (crew laughing) – Wow, we, she’s got, she’s takin’ a taxi all the way back to New York, right now. – I wanted to know what hand actually meant every time. – She didn’t have time to tell you. – Okay. – You order the vanilla? – Never. – You’re a chocolate man? – I’ve never ordered a vanilla shake at any establishment in the history of my life. – That’s thick, boy. I gotta go in here and just like- – It is thick. – I gotta use the- – I think that’s a good sign. – I mean, the thing about In-N-Out is that they only have vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry, right? They got strawberry. – [Rhett] Yeah. – Am I crazy? – [Rhett] I’ve never done that either. – Okay, yeah. Where as Shake Shack- – Strawberry is for kids. – They got so many different shakes. I don’t know if we should be taking that- – [Stevie] Strawberry is not for kids. – Into account. – Is that your go-to? – [Stevie] Strawberry is delicious. – I wouldn’t, I wouldn’t know that this is like- – [Rhett] That’s good. – Fresh ice cream. I don’t know, it tastes good. – This is a short, sorta. – It’s short and stumpy. – Short and stumpy. Uh, I can’t. – What is this straw that you put in this? – This is some sort- – [Nicole] The straw broke. – The straw broke, so you- – [Nicole] The straw broke. – So you put like a totally flacid- – [Nicole] Yeah, I’m sorry. – Yeah, it’s like, this is not doing anything. – This is so much more flavorful of a vanilla. – [Rhett] It tastes very, it takes almost homemade. – There’s just nothing to say about that vanilla. It’s like, except that it’s vanilla in like the adjective sense. – I don’t think it’s, I don’t, no, I think you’re being a little bit too tough on this one. – It’s not bad. – It’s not bad. – It’s just, it’s nothing to say. Like, describe it in a way besides just vanilla. – Yeah, but you think this one’s saying a whole lot more? I mean, it’s saying more and it’s a better base for all your other stuff. – The flavor is so much stronger and there’s so many other varieties that I think I’m gonna at least add a point because of the varieties of shakes at Shake Shack. You can freakin’ get a peanut butter milkshake at Shake Shack. – You can. I don’t think that In-N-Out’s on the ropes yet. – I’m gonna give this a five. – Well, I was also gonna give it a five but I was gonna give this a seven. – No, I’m giving this an eight. – Oh, okay. Well, we’re not that different. – Yeah, it’s just, so you agree with me. – I just don’t feel as strongly as your numbers seem to not communicate. (rock music riffing) Okay, time for burgers without the burger. – Hello, this is Shake Shack’s grilled cheese. It’s melted American cheese on a potato bun for 4.79. No nonsense, no need for it. – Hey, what’s up, bros? This is me again. So these are the grilled cheese sandwich. It’s got lettuce, tomato, except for you. And also like, it’s got a freshly baked bun for 2.80. – So you order a grilled cheese and you put all that on it? – Yeah, yeah, yeah. Also two slice of American cheese. It’s a secret menu item so don’t tell no one. – Oh, okay. – All right? – All right. – Okay, yeah. – Don’t be a narc. – Your secret is safe with us. – I don’t know why. So when you order grilled cheese that they would put lettuce on it. That’s just strange to me. – You can, my kids, well, Shepherd used to just get the grilled cheese from In-N-Out way back in the day, and he would just do just cheese. – [Link] Look at that. – [Rhett] Because this has the full onion on it, you know? – [Link] It’s a burgerless burger. – [Rhett] I’m willing to try it. – [Link] I wouldn’t call it a grilled cheese. – It tastes exactly like I thought it was gonna taste. Like a burger without a burger. – An In-N-Out burger without the burger. – Yeah. – I would not call that a grilled cheese. I call it a let down. If you just ordered it, I want a grilled cheese, just the bread and the cheese. – You can do that. We were told that we- – I’m sure you can do that. – But we just asked for grilled cheese and this is what they, this is what they do. Now this feels like a grilled cheese. – See, they do a special thing here. It’s like, it’s to- – They grill it, they grill it. This is not a grilled cheese. They grill this by putting it literally on a grill and smushing it down. – They kinda over grilled it. I mean, look at that. That’s normal and bam, good gosh. So it it’s a different type of bread entirely. It’s on the menu. – [Rhett] I mean, that’s a grilled cheese sandwich. – [Link] It’s very home made feelin’. Like this is like- – Yeah, that’s why I wouldn’t order it. – [Link] I think I would have to go with this one so I’m gonna- – Oh, this is clearly better as a grilled cheese. – [Link] I gotta give that a three. – I’m gonna give it a three as well. That’s what I was thinkin’. – All right, what you gonna give over here? – Because I don’t feel, like I said, it’s a good grilled cheese, but I would never order it and I just don’t feel like it’s justifying its own existence, I’m gonna give it a five. – Same here, man, five. We are in agreement! (rock music riffing) Throw it on the fries! Load ’em, load ’em up. – Hey, what’s up guys? It’s you again. All right, so these are another secret menu item. This is our animal style fry. It’s got the fries, and it’s got the caramelized onions, and the spread, and some American cheese and it costs 4.20, and I swear, I swear. – Really? – I swear to God. Just life works out that way. (crew laughing) – I feel that, man. – Hello. – Hi. – Hi. – This is our Shake Shack bacon cheese fries with cheese sauce on top, it’s 5.39. It’s got applewood smoked bacon on it as well. I just wanna say I really love your hair, very voluminous. Carla, you see this? You like it? – [Carla] It’s gorgeous, my God. – I know, it’s so good. Love ya. – Carla’s here. – She brought back up. Now I eat- – This is what I get. – I get these. – It’s not too secret. It’s got a pre-printed thing, I mean. – I like the fact that they assume we could eat this whole thing. I mean, this is, this is just so- – You know, you can’t look cool eating this. – I’m having trouble getting that. – It’s a really great combination of flavors. The worst part of it is the fry layer, you know? – Yeah, it’s clear that we don’t love the fries but I mean, they’re the perfect base for really going in on some animal style. – And it’s a really unique approach to a loaded fry. Over here, the Shake Shack, okay, cheese and bacon, yeah. I’ve seen that done before. But I remember the first time I got these as a like new citizen of California? – Yeah. – It’s super memorable. – Yeah. – You know what I mean? – Yeah, and it’s unlike- – Style points. – It’s unlike any other loaded fries I’ve ever had and they’re not shy with like fully loading it up. And it’s a slice of cheese that’s just melted on it versus over here. – Now I don’t need a fork for these. – You’ve got like a, like a of cheese, just like a squirt of cheese and then bacon. – They’re tasty, though. They’re really tasty. – The bacon is really smoky. – But I’m not gonna have a conversation with somebody about these. – That’s great. – First time I had these, I had to call a friend, you know what I’m saying? I had to phone a friend. This is still a side but you’re tempted to make this a meal. Course I never do but it’s so substantial. – [Rhett] These are really tasty. – [Link] I gotta give it to ’em, though. Their bacon? – [Rhett] It’s real bacon. – They’re not playin’, that’s some good bacon. The cheese is a little, it’s still American cheese. – It’s got like a nacho cheese kinda thing. – But it’s that nacho cheese consistency. It’s like, it’s almost a creamy, creamified American cheese. I don’t, I don’t love that. – Animal fries, you know, for the innovative nature of it and the taste at least of all the top parts, I’m going all the way to eight for the animal fries. It’s a solid offering. – Yeah, to start so low with just the fry on a its own earlier, I am not gonna apologize for the fact that all of that animal style on top of it brings this thing all the way up to a nine for me. – Whoa, really? – Yeah, you can’t go anywhere else and get this experience. – You’re right about that. – It’s absolutely amazing. Over here, I really, I got nothing to complain about. – Mm hmm. You gonna call somebody about it? You gonna phone a friend? – I’m just surprised that the bacon doesn’t overcome, like the special spread and onions, but something about that being so unique puts it ahead for me, and I love bacon. – I’m gonna give the Shake Shack a six because I still feel good about it, but I’m not gettin’ too excited. – Yeah, and I’ve had this a lot too, and it’s more hit or miss. So I’m taking that into account. I’m also gonna give it a six. So what does that bring our final score to, twinkle-fingies? – [Rhett] Ooh! – [Link] 56 for In-N-Out to 65 for Shake Shack. – This is not a close. This was almost a blowout. Nine points? That’s a pretty substantial margin of victory for Shake Shack. I gotta say, personally, I’m not that surprised. California, I’m sorry. Please don’t take away my license. – I still love you, In-N-Out, but I, yeah, I stand by this decision too. Congratulations to Shake Shack. You are the Baron of Buns. You win the chance to sponsor a future episode of GMM for breader or for worse. – Thanks for subscribing and clicking that bell. – You know what time it is. – I gotta catch a J train. Are we done? – Yep, we’re done. – Okay. – He’s got nowhere to be, look at him. (crew laughing) – He’s like, oh yeah. – I’m Julia. – And I’m CDT. – A we’re in Shake Shack waiting for our orders. – And it’s time to spin the wheel of mythicality. – Shake Shack in the Philippines. – Yeah. – Click the top link to watch us discover some weird secret menu items in Good Mythical More. – And to find out where the wheel of mythicality is gonna land.
