Can these novices follow instructions in sign language? – Let’s talk about that. (upbeat theme music) – Good mythical morning! – Okay, we’ve had crew and guests flex their language speaking abilities at us a few times now in Spanish, French, Korean, German, Indonesian, and Farsi. – And considering we knew almost nothing about any of those languages, I think we did a pretty bang up job– – Yeah, we did. – Of figuring out what we were being instructed to do. – We got natural instincts. But today, we’re tackling a language that just so happens to not include the helpful hint of intonation. – Mm-hmm. – And it was a language created right here in the good old US of A. – Could it be– – Oh, yes, it be. – American Sign Language? Let’s see how we do. It’s time for, Can we follow instructions being signed by human hands? Or will we stink worse than a dog’s anal glands? – Hmm, really? – Glad we’re not eating today. – Okay. – Well, maybe we are. I don’t know. We’re gonna be given a bunch of items needed to do certain tasks and some decoy items that we don’t need. Instructions to correctly pull off those challenges will be given to us in American Sign Language, and each instruction can only be given a maximum of three times. – And as a lifeline, we can ask the signer for an interpretation of any sign of our choosing, but we can only use that lifeline five times throughout the whole game. – Every time we correctly execute an individual instruction, we’re gonna earn a point. If we get at least 12 outta 21 points up for grabs, we’re gonna receive the ultimate ASL prize. – Okay. (whimsical music) Welcome to the interpretation station zone! – And please welcome our special guest, ASL signer and childhood friend of former Hot Dog on a Stick employee, Matt Carney, it’s Anton. (crew applauds) Hey, Anton. – Hey, Link, how are you doing? – Great, man. Thanks for being here. So when did you learn sign language? What’s the story there? – Sure. So my older brother, Albert, two years older than me, was actually born deaf. We lived in the Philippines at the time. And a Peace Corps volunteer actually came and lived with us for a couple of years and taught my whole family sign language. – Okay, so you’re very proficient in this. – Pretty good. Yeah, pretty good. I try to keep in touch with my brother. – Okay, can you give us just a little taste of it just to kinda get us in the rhythm? Because neither of us, I mean, I think I can do, I think we like learn in church, I love you– – Isn’t that what this is? – At one point. – It’s hot, it’s hot. Yep, absolutely. – But that’s all I have. – That’s a good first one to learn, but give us another. – [Rhett] Uh. – One more time. (crew laughs) – [Rhett] Okay, so the two of us. – [Link] We. – Okay. – Pulling fruit apart. (crew laughs) And it tastes good. – I think this is just, nice to meet you guys. Nice to see you guys. – You guys– – Nice to see you guys in your sub sandwich that you usually are eating together. – No, I think it’s, you guys have a strained relationship that is so palpable, I can taste. – Yeah, this is gonna be great. (crew laughs) (Rhett laughs) – Wait, wait. – [Link] He’s not gonna tell. – [Rhett] Wait, wait. – All right, let’s get started. We’re ready. – I’m feeling confident. – I see there’s stuff here. Let’s have our first instruction. Grab your chin. – Oh, gosh. – Now he can only give it to us two more times. I mean, definitely it was grab. – How literal is it? Like, it seems like some of it’s literal. – I don’t know. – And some of it is, you can’t, everything can’t be literal ’cause there’s a lot of things that you just, you have to just come up with some sort of symbol. – Well, I did hear, like what’s, just, this is not a hint. I just wanna know ’cause I, just to confirm, like what’s the sign for bull crap? – This is probably the popular one. – Yeah, see? That’s pretty literal. – Oh. You knew that was gonna happen. – All right, yeah, I’ve heard about that one. All right, so give it to us for a second time, and slow. – [Rhett] And slowly. – I don’t know what that is. Building. Like, this right here, it starts at the lip and then it comes down off the chin. – I mean– – I mean, we have a plate. – Grab this. – How many steps are there? Is that it? – There’s gonna be five steps we’re gonna be going over here. – Oh, I wonder what this will be. Grab it and put it on a plate. Or maybe we just grab a plate. – [Rhett] There’s no eating utensils here. There’s plates. – This wouldn’t be plate. Grab a– – But then the last thing was this. – Like, yeah, it was this. – This. – I think it was put it on a plate. So whatever we grab, we have to put it on a plate. – Is it just the cherry? – Grab the cherry– – Grab the cherry and put it on a plate. – And put it on a plate. He’s laughing. – Okay, that was, yeah, yeah, I got you! (laughs) – (laughs) Anton. Do we need to already use one of our five? I don’t wanna do that. – Hold on, do it a couple times. – I think this is a cherry. You’re pulling it outta your mouth. – And put it on a plate. – [Link] And put it on a plate. – Yeah, put a cherry on a plate. We were right to begin with. – We have to go over here to do our official answer. – Hold on, is this paper plate or glass plate? I think we should go glass plate. – Glass plate? Okay. – Yeah. And put the cherry on the glass plate. – Continue! – All right. Nailed it! (chuckles) Okay, slice a cake. That was definitely a slice of cake. – Well, it was gather, like push something together. – Oh, you know what we’re supposed to do? I think we were supposed to take the cake that had a cherry on top of it, and now we’re supposed to slice it. That could also be a strawberry cake. – Yes, ’cause it was on top. – Grab the, okay. So what, again, we have to do it over here. So we’re going back to number one. – Wait, would you call this a cherry cake? Is that how you would describe this? – Grab, grab the cherry-topped cake. – (chuckles) Okay, okay. – [Link] That’s what we’ve done. – And then take a, okay, and can you do that? Can you do that one more time? Yep. – [Link] A small scissoring motion, slicing motion. – I think it’s grab the knife. Not this, because this is the symbol for a knife, I believe. So then, we have to take this. – So let’s see it one more time. All right, so– – That’s just, he’s just making a motion of– – I think it’s, there’s no plate yet. It’s just cut the cake into small slices. – It seemed like it was one slice. Boom, boom, slide. – Small. – It was slice, slice, slide. You slice, slice, and you slide it out of the cake. You think that’s wrong? I’m basically doing exactly what he was doing. Then you gotta slide that. – All right, but just put it back ’cause I’m sure there’s, he hasn’t told us anywhere to put it. – You take it out then. – No, we’re not to that. Don’t get ahead of yourself. – He slid it! He slid it! – And then what? – Just put it on a plate. Just put it on a plate like just anybody would do, just like that, sideways. – You know, just like anybody would do. – Yeah. – We’re just anybody. – We’re just anybody guys. – Just doing stuff that anybody would do. Third step. See, you put it on a plate. I told you! You got ahead of yourself, man. – Well, (chuckles) I’ve already done it then. – All right, so let me, let me, let’s take this step by step. – [Rhett] Take the slice. – No, okay. See he, no, hold on. It’s the same sign– – That’s the sign for a slice. – He used before, and then– – [Rhett] Take the slice and put it on– – [Rhett and Link] A plate. – Which plate? The plate that’s made out of– – The plate made of– – [Rhett and Link] Teeth! (crew laughs) – You know what I’m saying? – The one that hurts your teeth when you scratch it. – Let’s move over here and act like we haven’t done this. – Yeah, yeah. Cut, cut, slide, onto the plate that makes your teeth hurt. – ‘Cause it’s glass. – Done. – See? We were even being psychic. – Next step. – Oh. (laughs) – Oh, yes. Oh, yes. This is so obvious. Chocolate on chocolate. – Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. No, this. – I mean, isn’t it the same? – Oh, we gotta go back, go back. This is confusing ’cause you were so sure it was chocolate. I was so sure it was ready Reddi-Wip, not a sponsor. – [Link] Let’s see it again. – Oh, oh, he shook. Dude, that’s totally not chocolate! He went like this, shake, shake. Dude, he did this, look. – Hold on, does it say shake before using? – You’re not looking at his finger! Watch him again! Anton. Look at the finger. – Obviously, you’re right. I’m just trying to make sure. – Say that again. Hey. (crew laughs) – In this one very isolated instance– – Hey, I’ll let you do the honors since I’m so right. Op! – All right, last step. – Serve it to– – Me. – Anton. – Me. Oh, yeah. See, again, we were getting ahead of ourselves. I wanted to serve it to him in that other step. – Enjoy. – Thank you, thank you. – Sorry, this is the closest thing we got for you to eat it with. – That’ll work, that’ll work. – Okay, Anton, our round one job here is done. Now it’s your job to tell us that we did it perfectly. – Let’s start with the first instruction. Grab. (bell dings) – [Link] Yep. – The strawberry. (buzzer blares) – I told you it was strawberry! – Oh, no! – You fool! – You didn’t say it was strawberry! – I said it could be– – You said what if it’s strawberry! – And you just completely dismissed me! I said it could be, everybody eats strawberries and cherries the same way! – No, but what you didn’t say was this is a straw! – What I said to myself, what I– – A straw in the mouth! – Hold on, listen to me. I said, “Would you describe this as a cherry cake?” No, you would describe this as a strawberry cake. Putting a cherry on top of a cake does not make it a cherry cake. It’s a chocolate cake. – So this is like straw. – Strawberry. – You just ask a question– – [Rhett] No. – And you didn’t have an answer. – What I said, and you did not listen, is I said– – You did not listen. – Would you describe this as a cherry cake? You would describe this as a straw, so you’re gonna say the cake with a straw, with a cherry on top of it? No, no, no, no. – I said we have to commit. – The next instruction, with the small knife, (buzzer blares) cut into it. (bell dings) – I didn’t even know there was a small knife. – Okay, so we did the wrong knife, but we did cut into it. – We did slice it. – So we take that slice and put it (bell dings) on the glass plate. – [Link] Yes! – It’s interesting because we both immediately knew that like you’re talking about a glass plate even though I can’t quite explain why that means glass. You know what I’m saying? Glass. – ‘Cause it sounds like glass. – Clearly. – And then final step. – Nope, two more. – [Link] Oh. Oh, yeah. – Putting the whipped cream on top, of course. (bell dings) – [Link] We nailed that. – Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. – No debate there. – Yeah, and then lastly, serve that to me. (bell dings) – [Link] Yes! – Hey, okay, all right! We did all right! – So how many points did we still get? – So really great. We tallied up six points for that round. – Okay, six of eight. – Not bad, not bad. – Okay, we’ll take it. – Hey, hey, you know what? – Hey, we’re still in a good place. – We were way too eager. – We’re still in a good place.
