Can plate color make your food taste sweeter? Let’s talk about that. “Good Mythical Morning.” A ton of scientific studies have been done on how our perception of taste is influenced by color. And some of those studies found that even something as simple as the color of your plate can make you perceive your food as being sweeter. Okay. So we’re gonna put that to the test. We’re going to put ourselves in the shoes of a test subject because that’s how these things were discovered. Okay. And we’re gonna see how aligned we are with science. We are very aligned with science, Yes. I’d like to think. Okay, boys, in front of you are three plates of strawberry mousse. And in a scientific study, tasters perceived strawberry mousse served on one of these plates as being sweeter and more flavorful. So your job is to try ’em all, think like a test subject, and tell us which plate they perceived as making the mousse sweeter. I mean, I just love purple. It’s my favorite color this year. It’s your favorite color this year. I just really like it. It’s so pleasing to the eye. And it feels like it would be the sweetest one, just based on look alone, because it’s so festive. Well, I mean, the white plate, Boring. Makes it all about the dessert. And it is a dessert. But doesn’t it feel very K and W? I thought they had like a brown gravy type color plate. Maybe they do. I’m gonna taste from the back edge. This is something I’ve never ordered. Strawberry mousse. I did not succeed. I’m not really succeeding right now. I’m gonna keep looking at the plate while you- I’m looking at the plate while I’m eating all that. It’s very sweet. I’m getting a little purple in my periphery. Getting that purple periphery. All right, so now I’m just gonna go full purple, straight on. Keep looking at purple. I’m still looking at purple plate. Hmm. It’s not as sweet. Something happened. Whoa. It’s not as sweet. I gotta tell you, it’s not as sweet. I know we’re supposed to wait. Hold on. You’re saying this is the same thing? It’s the same thing just on every plate. I’m just asking how you perceive it. Now, I was distracted from looking at the white plate because the purple plate that I’ve put up here, It’s weighing you down. Blaine was over there. And I felt that he tried to take the plate. He was trying to take it from you. He tried to take the plate from me. And you resisted. Okay. So it was kinda like, I’m sorry. It was kinda like I was fishing. And you got a bite. And I got a bite and so now I need to go again. I’m not seeing any purple. I’m not feeling anybody biting my purple plate. Okay. Okay. Okay. You’re gonna put your hand over the one that you perceive as sweeter. Here’s what I wanna say before I make this choice. This one doesn’t seem like it’s gonna be sweet. These two seem like they’re gonna be sweeter, but the tasting of this one, Will be revealed when you put your hand on it. Felt the sweetest. And that’s what we’re doing, right? I know, but you’re spoiling my answer. Three, two, one. But I agree. He hasn’t swayed me. The plate participants perceived as having the sweeter mousse was the white plate. And researchers posited, it may have been because the color of the mousse appeared more intense against the lighter white background. It doesn’t, ’cause this is the most intense. I think the dish is the star. Well, not, the mousse is the star because the plate is a dish and it’s not the star. The mousse is the star. Hey, if you’re serving sweet things at a restaurant, put ’em on a white plate. You heard it here. Okay, now your job is to figure out which cup of coffee study participants perceived as tasting stronger. Now the pressure’s higher, because I feel like we got the answer right in the ground. We have to be the perfect subjects. You have to be the perfect subjects. Now, again, looking at all three of these, if the same principle applies, it would be the white one. Because the contrast between really, really dark coffee and really, really light mug, you would think that this would be the strongest one. But that didn’t work last time. The inside of this mug is white. It did work last time. But the outside is yellow. So I’m just really gonna look at the outside of the mug while drinking it. But how do I do that? Because when I’m drinking it, I’m only looking at the inside of the mug. Okay, hold on, hold on. I’ll do this. Did the study have white on the inside of the yellow mugs, Davin? Let me take a picture. This is gonna impact, if we get this right, this is gonna impact the color of mugs, which is gonna really throw a wrench into our household because we have all types of mugs. I know which one it isn’t. It is definitively not one. Right. It’s definitively not one. It’s probably the one that we’re not going back and tasting. No, I just did to go back and taste it. But it’s so weak! This is so weak. Well, out 457 participants, 73% reported that the coffee from the brown mug was too strong. Too strong. Oh, I could have said that because it didn’t have cream in it. Here’s the thing. If you’re running a coffee shop out there and you wanna be known for your strong coffee, you gotta go brown. Okay. But here’s the bonus question. You have your whiteboards. Which of the other two mugs did participants perceive as being weaker? Well, yeah. Yeah. Yeah, we already said that. We’re both thinking yellow. Yeah. Definitely. Correct. Yep, yep. Hey, science is real. Okay, I want you to tell me which popcorn was perceived as tasting saltier. – Saltier. Just this is a White bowl. It’s basically disappearing. There’s no bowl there at all. This is how I’ll eat my popcorn at the movies. I’ll stare right into the bucket. I’m actually not gonna eat more. I have a sodium assessment. Now I’m moving to red. Come on over. It’s, well, okay. Oh my god. Oh my god! Are y’all, you swear, This is a prank. It’s the same popcorn. It’s a prank. All right, we’re ready to vote. Eat it like Tom Cruise. I think he grabbed it and then, Tossed it. Grabbed it from one. Okay. Saltier popcorn in three, two, one. Crazy salt. Just dynamic. Crazy salt! Sodium levels over here in a beautiful little presentation. I love it now. I love red bowls. The bowl participants perceived as being saltier was the red bowl. Yeah, yeah. Yes! Scientists found that people perceive popcorn in a colored bowl to be saltier in general, whereas they perceive popcorn served in a white bowl as being sweeter. Well, you didn’t ask me that. Do you want it to feel salty though? Yeah. I think you do, right? Yeah. Yeah. It’s crazy. And then when I went back to this, it tasted saltier than the first time. But not as salty as it needed to be. But not as salty. And popcorn machines are usually red. Popcorn bowls and bags are usually red at the movie theater. Like I guess they already, the word got out on this one. And if you spank me, my butt will turn a little red. But I’ve been a good test subject. So you’re not getting any spankings. So I was thinking it was gonna be the outlier. But the darker green is it. The darker green is super flavorful. The can perceived as having a stronger, lemony limey flavor is on Link’s side. No, no, no. No. Wrong. Showed that participants responded to a can that was about 15% more yellow than the default green. How many of them? Not totally yellow. But not totally yellow. Yeah. Which makes sense because Sprite’s done their work. I thought it was gonna be this. This is more of a Sprite color, right? I think this is more of a Sprite color. Yeah, that’s more of a Sprite color. Also, you were drinking 7 Up. Okay touche, touche. Okay, we never claimed to know everything. Just science. Okay, so you’ve already proven that you’re master testers. Thank you, Stevie. And Rhett barely won but has won the prize in the end. But we’re gonna switch things up for this round. You’re not competing. You’re actually gonna be testing something out. So we purchased the Kirin electric salt spoon for $126. And this thing is supposed to make your food taste saltier and increase the umami depth without putting more salt in. So we have two soups in front of you. We have a low sodium tomato soup on Rhett’s side and the regular version of that tomato soup. And we’re gonna see if, with that spoon, you can get the feeling of salt in that low sodium soup. The feeling of salt. So, well listen. This is not in America. Let’s eat this one first. Let’s eat the regular soup and then we can talk about this, ’cause I can tell you what I was told. We had to acquire this from, Japan. Japan. Yes. So this is just straight up, regular old tomato soup. Nice and salty. I wouldn’t say “Wow, that’s too salty.” It’s pretty nice. But I would say it’s good. I wouldn’t say it’s lacking anything. Do you want to taste it just without? No. No, no. So this has metal right here and metal right here. And you have to complete the circuit. So I’m definitely holding that side. With your mouth? You have to put your mouth deep on that spoon. Yeah, yeah. I gotta get my mouth. Oh, it’s a lump in there. What was that? I don’t want that. Break the bottom, or don’t. You really, now I have to use the spoon after he’s like, intimately like made out with it. Do you feel anything? Tastes like low sodium soup. I can’t say that I experienced anything. I’m glad. Oh no, you broked it. I can’t say that I experienced anything, but it’s your turn to try. So apparently you can remove this to like, what, just put it in the dishwasher? Yeah. ‘Cause you don’t wanna put this in the dishwasher. Right. I felt no sensation. I mean, maybe if you just stick your tongue on that straight up right there and just see if it tastes salty. I mean, all you did was wipe it. Well, what else can a man do besides wipe his spoon? Yeah, I’m gonna wipe it again. Okay. I wiped it pretty good. I’m gonna do a double wipe. So, don’t push the button. Don’t push the button, ’cause it’s already on high. There’s four levels. Ooh. Yeah. I think I do taste. You should feel a little something. My mouth, it’s making my mouth water. Can I wipe it and try it? No, no. Before you do that, do the thing that you’re supposed to do. Eat the soup with it. When I put my tongue against that metal strip, hold on! It tastes salty. Yeah, I couldn’t get to it because there was soup in the way. I don’t know why the strip doesn’t go all the way to the end. Yeah, it’s just a salty tasting spoon. Why don’t you put the strip on the end? Can you get some soup and taste? It also tastes like metal, but. Or don’t. I am! It’s supposed to be this. I would double wipe it, ’cause I mean, all I did was, I mean, this is as intimate as it’s gonna get. It’s not getting through the soup. I mean, they read the other direction. So maybe they put the spoon concave down. Yeah, there it is. You have to eat it, and then go like this. Yeah, just like, complete the circuit. You gotta clean the circuit. I think if this piece of metal was in your mouth the whole time, just like creating an electric shock while you’re eating something, that would do it.
