GMMore 1263: Vegan Chocolate Taste Test

(rooster crowing) – Welcome to Good Mythical More. Can we tell the difference between vegan chocolate and regular chocolate? – Win face! Congratulations to Daniel. You win a GMM mug because of your mug. Get it? Win Face. – Yes! Great work, Daniel. You look fabulous. Okay, here’s our first plate with chocolate, and is this, I eat one, he eats one? – Yep, I’m pretty sure– – I mean I didn’t know if– – That’s the direction. – If this was both then I eat half. Now, vegan chocolate, just to expose my ignorance, is chocolate made without milk or eggs. – It’s chocolate made without animal products. – What are the other animal products that are in chocolate? – Um. – Dairy? Besides dairy. – I don’t know, blood? – Blood. That’s a good chocolate. Good and dark chocolate. – When you get dark chocolate, there’s not a lot of animal products in there to begin with. – It gets really dicey. We’re sitting here eating all of it so it is great. – It’s very good. – But I’m also starving right now. I’ve been hanging on a wall. – There’s a little bit of a creaminess at the end of this. – Through lunch. – I’m gonna say that this is regular chocolate. – [Stevie] I was gonna give you– – I think it is regular chocolate as well because it’s great. – [Stevie] You’re right. I can give you the packaging too, yep. – Oh, it’s divine. Dark Chocolate with Pink Himalayan Salt. Nice packaging. It’s Fair Trade. Divine. Get it outta here. All right, so this one has to be vegan from a produce oil standpoint. – It said one, no, it says chocolate on it. – Oh, and on the back it says Vegan. Just kidding. (laughing) It’s got some white flakes in it. This doesn’t have the crunch of the last one. Nor the bold taste. – Hmm. Hmm. – Am I tasting the lack of dairy? – It doesn’t have the creamy ending-ness to it. – Yup. – The Divine one, right before it went down, – It would’ve been good. – They kind of gave you a little bit of creaminess around your mouth. – Smooth. It really did. – This one’s not doing it. – Vegan. – Still taste good, but it is vegan. – [Stevie] You’re correct. (laughing) – If I were to have only eaten Lily’s 75% Dark Chocolate, Stevia sweetened. Stevia, Stevia? Vegan, non-GMO, no sugar added, Fair Trade. – Is it Stevia or Stevia? – Salted almond. – I think it’s Stevia. – Now, do you own that? Is that your product? – [Stevie] Yeah, I just wanted to slip it in round two. – Stevie went off and started Stevia without telling anybody. – [Stevie] And I’m still here. – Stevia has sweetened beverages for centuries. – I don’t believe that. You could write anything on the back. – Here’s another one. – I’m also just looking at just the approach to the design because vegans think differently about the approach to bar design. – This one’s got washboard ridges on it. Doesn’t seem like something a vegan would do. – But all vegans have washboard abs. – I’ll tell you right now, this has got a flavor added and I do not like it. It’s like a fruity flavor. You tasting a fruitiness? Like a cherry. – Something in there. Um. – This is one of the ones that my grandma would poke her finger into in like the Whitman’s assortment, and then decide not to eat it. She poked her finger into a lot of them– – It does have the creamy note at the end, though. Does it not? It doesn’t taste that good though. – It tastes bad. I’m saying vegan. – You might have the right instinct. I’m just gonna go with what I’ve been going with, that creamy thing at the end. I’m gonna say this is regular chocolate. – [Stevie] It’s vegan. – Up! Okay. Somehow the vegans can pull off the creaminess every once in a while. – Guittard from San Francisco. 64 percent cacao. 100% not recommended (laughing). I mean, again, once you start off with that nice, nice, nice non-vegan chocolate– – Oh, it was molded on equipment also used with milk, chocolate, soya, eggs, and tree nuts and wheat. – Well, that’s it’s problem. Don’t gush to me about your problems, chocolate bar. You’re here to make me happy. Um. – Whoa, this has got a strong smell. – This has washboard on top too. Is this the same thing again? Is this a trick? – No. – Whoa, there’s toffee in there. – Toffee? – Saw dust? – Or coffee? – Toffee. – Also a little blueberry or raspberry. – I’m gonna add something. I’m gonna guess the percentage dark. – 60 percent. – 72. – Um, vegan. – 72 and it’s real. – [Stevie] It’s real, – Hm. – What’s the percentage, Link? – 70! – 70. Dang it, Rhett, how did you get so lucky? Made with heirloom cocoa. Madagascar? – Hey, I just impressed myself a little bit. – “Our goal is to make 100% of our chocolate in Madagascar.” Madagascar. Oh, now we’ve come to it. – That’s really good! – You really like it? Is it blueberry, because I said there were blueberry hints. – No, it’s just– – There’s nothing. It’s just, that’s the flavor. – Yeah, it’s got a flavor profile. Chocolate has flavor profile like wine a lot of times with hints of things that are not in there. Fools your tongue. – White chocolate is not chocolate at all. White chocolate is made from– – That’s racist, man. – White chocolate is made from the stalks of the cacao plant. Not true. – That’s not true. – There is crystallized pineapple in the middle of this. – What makes you think it’s pineapple? – ’cause it, the taste. What do you think it is? Sugar? – I don’t know what it is. – [Stevie] It’s not pineapple. – I don’t think it’s pineapple. Um. Definitely vegan. Zero percent cacao. – This is very milky to me, man. Milk chocolate, I mean, white chocolate cannot be vegan. It’s impossible. Not vegan. – [Stevie] It’s non-vegan. – Oh! He’s right. – Now it’s lemon. – Oh, it was lemons. White chocolate truffle bar with lemon candy pieces. All natural. – I’m not into that. – Yeah, I don’t, I don’t like to… What am I thinking about when I say that white chocolate is not actually chocolate at all? Because I do think that’s true. – That’s definitely true. It’s just something else. I mean– – What is it made out of? It’s made out of dairy products. – It’s white stuff. Cane, sugar, cocoa butter. Oh, it’s made from cocoa butter. It’s cane sugar and cocoa butter and milk and vanilla. That’s what makes up– – Can somebody Google why is white chocolate not actually chocolate? And this one has an Aztec fireman scribbled on the top of it. – It’s also been dipped in some sort of flakes. – White chocolate is a chocolate derivative. It commonly consists of cocoa butter, sugar, and milk solids and it’s categorized by paleo. Yeah I know. Melting point of cocoa butter is primary, its primary cocoa bean component is high enough to keep white chocolate solid at room temperature. – This is horrible. This is absolutely horrible. – I don’t know if that answered my questions though. – Um. – Wow. – That’s not good. I’m not finish, the first one I’m not finishing. I’m gonna say that is, that’s 70 percent as well and it is vegan. – It’s vegan. It’s not good. It tastes like chocolate that has been melted and reconstituted. – [Stevie] It’s vegan. – What percent? – 55? – Pasha 55 Organic with cocoa nibs. – Yeah, those, I think that’s cacao nibs. – No, that’s cacao and that’s cocoa. – Is that it? – [Stevie] Yeah, what’s the final score? – Link, five out of six. Rhett, four out of six. So lowest score wins like golf, right? – I’m a chocolate genius. Excuse me, I’m gonna go get back up on that wall.
