Welcome to “Good Mythical More,” You will be surprised at what things that you think are Chinese that originated as Italian. And vice versa. We’ll probably be even more surprised. Hang on. But first. Kinda What? I said, I mean, kind of I mean, there’re inventions we all know and they may have been invented by the Italian or the Chinese. Yeah. Like if I hold it just right. Well, that’s what I said. Said that we think of them as Chinese but they may be Italian and vice versa Oh, originated. If I hold it like that it looks like it may still be on the wheel Oh, list them all Hey, list them all. Types of pasta. Rigatoni. Spaghetti Linguini Um, elbow Bow tie Angle hair Macaroni Um, what are you looking at in your mind to get these, man? Uh, curlicue Shells. Curlicue’s not a type of pasta. How far can you go? Keep going. Keep looking. What have Keep looking in What have I said. I don’t know what you’ve said that I haven’t said. Fettuccine, um, um, hmm, hmm. Lasagna is a type of pasta because it’s the big sheets, you know. Mm Uh Yeah, I don’t. Gnocchi Gnocchi Alright. Surprise us Stevie, Chinese and Italian origins of stuff. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So this is what I mean. Like the first one is the mechanical clock. Now, I personally don’t think of it as either Chinese or Italian. I don’t know. I don’t know what comes to mind for you guys? Well, okay, this is tough because you think about, like, Davinci, like sitting somewhere like, and like, figuring out how to do the mechanical Hmm Clock, but then you think about all the crazy stuff that has been invented in China. And the cool thing about at certain times in the past is like there’s these things that were happening completely isolated. Yep, like, uh, a co-invention. Even the advent of agriculture was popping up in multiple places around the world. I mean, well you It just happened. You got dirt, you got a plow, what you going to do? Well, but you’ve been sitting there with essentially the same level of intelligence for hundreds of thousands of years and all of a sudden, boom! Everybody just starts doing agriculture? Only explanation is aliens. Um, I think that the first mechanical clock was, um, it still involved water. It was a water clock. And? And mechanics. And that makes you think China? No, but, and it happened in China. I believe it’s Chinese. I don’t know about the water part. I’m– Yeah, it’s Chinese and there’s a water part but Link is all over it. OK, tell us about the water part, Link, So before we hear about it. It was set– Oh. How did you know about this? Um, it was set next to a creek Okay I don’t know. I just know something about a water clock for some reason. I don’t know. Seven hundred and twenty-five A.D. by a Buddhist monk, it was operated by dripping water which powered a wheel that made one revolution in twenty-four hours. Wow Yeah. I mean, that’s how I would make a clock. I guess what I was thinking. One revolution in twenty-four hours. That a, that’s either a slow or a big wheel Slow or a big, yeah. How would you, how would you zero that in to be twenty-four hours? I guess you’d do something Gears, man. with the sun. I mean, you’d have like a sun dial And so you’d know, like I can tell exactly when its twenty-four hours later. And I’ve got to get this wheel to go around. And how many times did the guy have to sit there and like be aw, a little too much water, I gotta make the hole a little bit smaller? To drip that water. Do you ever think about the trial and error? Um-huh Yeah. In China In China From the mechanical clock to paper cups. Paper cups? Yeah. Hmm Certainly feels like an American thing. But that is not an option. So you’ve got, I mean you definitely had a paper. Uh, you know, you got the first paper on the planet was, um Papyrus Was it? Papyrus And they made a font out of it, that’s been around forever. Um, Was that the first paper? Or was there like a was there like a Chinese paper separate. Then they started rolling up in to hold water for the clock? How often do you That’s what it is How often do you Gotta have water for that clock How long do you have to go with just having paper before you realize you can roll it up and drink out of it? You gotta put wax on it. So they had to have wax. Wax feels Italian. You know what I’m saying? Wax feels like an Italian thing. Because of the cheese? Cheese and candles. It just feels very Italian. They were invented in China. Yeah, right. Paper cups have been documented in Imperial China and were used to serve tea. See, tea. OK. There was wax though, right? You can’t have a paper cup without wax. Paper cups definitely my preferred method of drinking tea. Yeah. Dentures. Dentures. Um. Wow. Definitely going to say China again. This has gotta be a place where they needed dentures Which was not wooden For a long time I mean, again, pre-agriculture like losing your teeth just wasn’t You didn’t live that long and you were just eating like berries and twigs and stuff. So your teeth were fine. If you put anything on those gums just to help you keep chewing it increases your life span which would be cool. Uh, I’m going to go with Italy for no reason whatsoever, other than the fact that China was the answers to the first two. Sticking with China. And they were invented in Italy. Oh! Dentures. The Etruscans of Northern Italy were the first to make false teeth using human or animal teeth in seven hundred B.C. Oh, not wood. Its so like, wow, other people’s teeth. Would you rather have Became your teeth Assuming that they fit perfectly and they looked the same, would you rather have human or animal teeth? If you had to get dentures, This is from a pig. This is from Herb. A pig tooth? But it looks the same. They’ve carved it or whatever you do and it looks the same. I think its a, I think a pig or a creature is less creepy than another human. But, like, I would take a kidney if I needed it from another human. I’d take a heart from a pig if I needed it. I’d take a pig kidney. Yeah. Actually, Can you do that? I’m thinking about doing it. I know a heart valve you can take from a kidney. It’s an electric procedure. If you want a pig kidney. Confetti It’s a, its elective. So you don’t have to need a kidney? You can just get a If its pig. No. That’s not true. I don’t think they’ve figured that one out. Would you rather have human teeth or animal teeth? Human. Why? Uh, I just feel like I want a part that was intended for the right machine, man. All right. Know what I’m saying? Okay. Don’t give me a Ford engine in an Chevy. Would you rather have a Ford engine or a Dodge engine in your Chevy? A “Godge” engine Confetti The funny thing about Where we come from, Confetti is definitely Chinese if you found out that your neighbor had a Chevy engine in his Ford like, he would lose friends. That’d be weird. You know what I’m saying? It’d be like, don’t tell anybody I got a Ford engine. They were serious. Like growing up, Confetti Ford versus Chevy? Does anybody come from a place where Ford versus Chevy was like a real, real problem? Little Calvin guy peeing on Yeah, you got Calvin peeing on the other. You got Calvin peeing on both. He’ll pee on anything. He’ll pee on anything if he can get, to sell you a sticker Uh-uh. He won’t pee on the cross. He kneels at the cross. Oh. You know, if you, if he pees on the cross that gets your window busted in, you know what I’m saying? Yeah, yeah. That’s right, Rhett. You can’t do that. You can pee on the devil, though. I’m saying Confetti is China cause they invented fireworks Gunpowder And it feels similar. Gunpowder is like the confetti that kills. Yeah, right. You start with confetti and then you upgrade. Kill-fetti Confetti was invented in Italy. Boo! No it wasn’t. I don’t believe it. It was thrown during carnival celebrations. Milan is credited with inventing paper confetti. Milan Milan The umbrella. Check this out. We got a, we got a plushy. Let’s go ahead and promote these things, cause its the last quarterly collector item of the year. Sheeple Let’s talk about that Good mythical morning Smell that You know what time it is. As you can see, we can’t. And there’s plenty more where that came from. Mythicalsociety.com I’m sorry Stevie, what did you say? The Umbrella The umbrella. A, A, um, where does it rain more? China’s a big place. China’s got a If it If it happens, it happens in China. Yeah it does. That’s, I put, I had a t-shirt that sold really well a couple of years back. The monsoons. Boy, the walk through the rain in the rice paddies, man. If you can feel it, you can feel it in China. I had a lot of versions of it. Um, if it can be done. If it can be felt, if it can be done, if you can think it it was thought in China. I mean, what, you got that many people in that big of a place with that varied of a landscape. The breadth of human experience has happened in China. Just think about it for a second. I think there used to being rained on. If you’ve experienced something in your life. I think I’ve just experienced a completely novel thing It’s happened in China already. Yeah. I hate to burst your bubble. I’m going with Italy, though because they don’t like to get as wet. They don’t like to get as wet. Mm. I’m not going to. They’re wet averse. I’m not going to have any comment about what you just said. But I think it can be taken the wrong way. Uh, I’m going to go with China. China. Oh. People have been using parasols for sun protection as early as three-thousand Sun protection! Five hundred years ago in ancient Egypt. But the first waterproof umbrella was invented in China in the eleventh century. Hmm Man, just think about that. If it can be invented Eleventh century. So like for so much of human history, no umbrella. Like, you just in the rain, you’re wet. Or you’re wearing a hat. What kind a hat? A waterproof hat? They didn’t have, like, Columbia hats back then. Like a straw hat. Right, it goes right through it. No, no, no. Like a straw roof? You think it’s that tightly woven? Yeah. That’s a heavy hat, brother. Yeah. A waterproof hat, man. Eyeglasses. Oh Eyeglasses Oh man, uh. I actually think I know this because I saw it in a book. I’m probably going to be wrong, but, I think it’s Italy. China. It’s Italy. OK, can I say what I think I know about this? Yeah. There’s an island off the coast of Italy where glass was discovered. Wow. And they started making glasses with it because it was basically super-heated sand, right? And it already, it already was shaped like lenses? And it became this it was a phenomenon when it started spreading around Europe. Then the next thing you know. You can look through that and see better? Yeah. What? Tell me where I’m right. Well, the first wearable eyeglasses appeared in Italy during the thirteenth century which is not when they discovered glass. So Nope. Hold on. Glass Eyeglasses, glass for eyeglasses is more recent. Type in Italy island glass. Maybe that would, maybe I’m just thinking about glass. Confirmation bias or anything. Murano. Not glasses, glass. Murano is a series of islands linked by bridges in the Venetian Lagoon. Renown for it’s long tradition of glass making, ferry loads of visitors come to explore. Tells the story of glass through the centuries into shops for locally crafted souvenirs. There’s only five thousand people who live there. Aw. OK. Venetian sailors may have discovered how to make glass. Yep. Little is known about the first attempts but they believe it was four thousand years ago in Mesopotamia. Okay. Well, let me ask you this. You remember when Sawyer got glasses on “Lost?” Yeah, man. Wasn’t that nice? And he seemed a little bit smarter. And then. Yeah, he kinda got Kate was He kinda got soft. Kate was like, hmm, I like you with glasses. You might be as smart as the doctor, now. Hmm. Give me some tutelage. Yeah. In this cage. Matches. Well, okay. Well. Matches. Well it’s fire, and you know, they were inventing gunpowder They invented gunpowder. Put it on the end of a stick, I mean, that, that’s like, that’s Ground it up Day three, you think of this. You adhere gunpowder to the end of the stick. Yeah. If they didn’t do this in China then I’ve lost all hope in my deductive reasoning. Well they did it in China. Did they do it first? It was China. Yes, of course. The first version of the match was invented in five hundred and seventy seventy seventy seventy-seven Wow Wow C.E. Wow in the future. Going to get the matches, y’all. By impoverished court ladies during a military siege. Hard pressed for tender during the siege they used little sticks of pine wood impregnated with sulfur. You can impregnate one. You just don’t want anybody watching you when you do it. What does that baby look like? You know what I’m saying? Bet it stinks.
