GMMore 2636: Testing Our Fight Or Flight Responses

Welcome to Good Mythical More. When given a certain scenario, would we flee, would we fight, or would we freeze? And do we know what the other person would do? Let’s find out. First, let’s give even more money away. Yes. $1,000. Yes. To Save the Children, to aid in their mission to ensure that three global goals are met. No child should die from preventable causes. All children should have access to a quality basic education, and no child should be a victim of violence, and you can join us in giving at savethechildren.org/donate It’s okay. It’s early in the summer. That’s right, Link. You’ve won the first two. Anything can happen. It’s only two. Anything can happen. And, maybe we haven’t told Inner City Arts that I’m the one playing for this. Yeah. They’re gonna find out, though. They’re gonna, hey, in the end, well, it’ll be, it’ll be fine. In the end, it’ll be fine. I just wonder If my charity should have been Save the Other Children. You know, it’s just, just to keep it a little more like, Well, it’s all, you know. But, okay. Well, arts. For children. It’s a great, it’s a great, it’s a great thing. It is important if I, if I, when I win. They’re gonna get some money. Yes. I know it. It’s gonna happen. I know it too. Okay, Fight, Flight, or Freeze is the name of the game. The scenario you’re working with first is, a mountain lion starts following you while out on a hike. This could happen to us. I know, they’re in the area, you know? Well, they’re in the same area as us. Hiking. Yes. I’ve seen videos of this happen. And they will stalk you. Did you hear about the mountain lion that. Killed? Yeah. And, and, like, on the side of the highway next to where they’re building a, wildlife crossing, and on the local news it was like, authorities have still yet to confirm what happened. And I’m like, I’m pretty sure the lion got hit by a car. Oh, I thought you were saying that the mountain lion. I heard that a mountain lion killed somebody. What? No, you got it backwards. I didn’t hear that, but I thought that’s what she was saying. No, no, the mountain lion was, is, was found dead on the side of the highway. And the local news was like, we still haven’t figured out what happened. But they’re building a crossing, it’s just a bit too late now. Yes. For that, for that one in particular. Okay. What are you supposed to do when you’re hiking? I know what you’re supposed to do, but I’m trying to You’re not supposed to run. Well, hold on. This is what we’re doing. Oh. Let’s discuss after. Okay. This is what you would do and what I would do. Okay. And what was the scenario specifically? Fight, flight, or freeze. A mountain lion starts following you while out on a hike. And one of us, and we assume that we can fly. Because I would definitely do that. Someone did die recently-ish from a mountain lion as well. If you want to talk about more death as it relates to mountain lions, because when I talked about the dead mountain lion, that seemed to go over really well. There is a dead guy as well. Also, a bear killed somebody in California for the first time recently. Oh, I didn’t hear that. Animals are turning against us. I’ve been seeing so many bears, like, approach people on patios on TikTok, and then the people are like, whoa! And the bear’s like, whoa! It must happen every day. Yeah. Bears on patios. Bears on patios. Party here. They love, they love patios. Okay. Okay. I thought you would fight, because I think that’s the right thing to do, and I think that you have one of those worst case scenario books, and you’ve, you’ve read it. Well, I thought that you would freeze, and I said that I would freeze. Is that the right thing to do? Okay. I said that I would fight, because I thought it was the right thing to do. So, this is. And by fight, I mean, like, yell and face it, but don’t actually like punch it. And that’s what I meant by freeze. Here’s, I could be wrong. What I have been told. Oh, so we agree? Is that you, with a mountain lion, you stand your ground and make yourself bigger. However, in all the videos where there’s one like following people on a path, they walk away very slowly. You don’t run, you walk away and a lot of times you walk away like facing it. And then, every time he gets close, you’re like, no! Like, you make yourself big and make noises. Well, that’s fight. Well, I was, but this standing your ground is freezing. Fighting is like the thing has started to attack you. In this game, I would say freeze is like you freeze up. Like a rabbit. Like a deer in headlights. Yeah. Okay, so. Maybe he won’t see me. We’re both, I’m agreeing with Link. I just called it freeze because I couldn’t decipher a between. Okay, so fight across the board. And we really should know this, so this is good. This may be saving our lives. Show a little. Yeah, if a mountain lion is following you, it means it’s stalking you. It’s like, seeing you very specifically. So, yeah, you want to make yourself as big as possible. But I also don’t think you have much of a chance, honestly. Oh, I think maybe I do. I’m just kidding. Well, but based on the footage I’ve seen. True. But it’s like, looks like close. Especially if there’s like a baby. If they know that like, oh, this animal’s speaking English, then that’s not the type of animal I eat. Okay, explain that. Well, if you’re just like, oh, it’s like, oh yeah, that’s. You mean speak a human language. Yeah, speak, speak it. What you said could be misinterpreted in. – Yeah. – Pretty dark ways. That’s why I’m here. Thank you, Rhett. To help you understand that he does not mean what he said. Speak human language of any kind. English is just one. Link’s not talking about like a restaurant that has like an English only sign on it. Okay, we’re not talking about scenarios like that. That is not what he’s endorsing. We are much against that. I think that I am going to speak English loudly, because that’s the only language I know. You can speak a little French. Yeah, don’t be like. Yeah. Okay. But once they start attacking you, do you play dead? – Because I don’t think so. – No. You’re supposed to play dead with a grizzly. I don’t think you survive a mountain lion attack. They’re not just like. I do. No, no. I definitely do. Most people who get attacked just get badly cut and stuff. Yeah. And you should, like, go bonkers on that thing. You should go for its eyes. You should just. Nuts. Do whatever you can. If it’s got nuts, go for the nuts. If your face is next to the nuts, you should bite those nuts. Bite the nuts, for sure. Like, I will bite anything if, like if they, I mean, if he’s biting my nuts, I’m biting his nuts. – I doubt. – We’re in a 69 scenario. I doubt that you’re gonna get into a 69. How does that happen? That’s some clickbait right there. Los Angeles man 69. Are you speaking? Are you speaking English at that point, or what are you? I’m just speaking his love language. All right. Next one. You’ve just gotten to the teller at the bank after being in line for an hour when someone walks in to rob the place. Okay. Okay. It’s interesting that you’ve been, like, this whole part about you’ve been waiting for an hour. So, like, do you think that, like, there’s no way I’m running out of this bank, I’ve been waiting an hour! I feel, I’m pretty confident in this. In terms of, I think I’m describing reality here. I don’t know if it will be reflected in Link’s answer but, and I will give you how it would go down. Well let me go first then because I think I would freeze. And I also think you would freeze. I think you’re right. In that I would freeze because, you know, statistically speaking, that is what you should do, right? I would drop, I would drop to the ground. It’s not your money, I mean it is, maybe. Well it’s insured. But it’s FDIC insured. They’re actually not gonna do anything, probably. They’re not really gonna get it. But, Link, you’re gonna fight. You think I’m gonna fight? Like in what way? Okay, so I’m not, this is not trying to be the hero type fight. This is. I’ve been waiting in the line too long? Waiting in line too long. I’m at the end of my rope. You would say something. You would say something incendiary to the robber. That’s, you would be like, come on, man, really? Or something like that. There would be something that was said and then you would find yourself in an argument. That’s your mask? Yeah, right. Criticize his mask or something and then you would become a target. I might get information out of him that can be used against him. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like what? Like, what’s your name? Yeah, that’ll do it. Let me see the inside of that mask! But, freezing is, I mean, freezing is definitely and first of all. You don’t want to draw attention to yourself in a robbery. I would say, if I’m, if I’m waiting in line, and I’m in the back of the line, and that, and I’m pretty close to the door. I’m getting out. No, you’re not. No, you’re not. If they’ve got firearms? If it’s a, if it’s a big bank. – No you’re not. – What are they gonna do? Start shooting at me leaving? No, they, they don’t want to do that. They don’t want to actually hurt anybody. In like 99% of the cases, someone will be like, I’m gone. If I’m right next to the door, if I’m in the fly door, if I’m in the part where the ATM is and you’re not quite in the bank. Don’t do it, Rhett. I’m in the middle of a transaction. I’m in the parking lot. I’m gone. I just really want, right now, we’re planting things in our minds about what we should do. We’re actually getting prepared. This is healthy. This is good. I’m glad you clicked on this. Think about what you’re gonna do. And you need to freeze, man. Don’t be, don’t be darting. Don’t be moving. And I’m not gonna say. If you’re in the lobby at the ATM, you just gonna get down on the ground in the lobby? They didn’t even know you’re there? They didn’t even know I’m there. I’m leaving. I’m leaving. I’m gone. Okay, maybe I mean, if you’re, like, literally almost in a different business. Yeah, but I’m waiting for my transaction to end first. Because I don’t wanna just leave it open and the next person, then he’ll just go to the ATM and steal my money. That’s right. Don’t want that. It’s still open. Get your card. Don’t leave your card. I would 69 that dude. Right. That’ll stop it. Bite him in the nuts while he bites you in the nuts. That’ll stop it real quick. That is what 69 is. 69, that’s violent and, like, biting of the nuts? I feel like there should be a different number for that. 96. That’s a 96. No. No, because you’re facing the wrong way. Facing the other way. Because if you take 69 and turn it upside down, it’s still 69. That’s the. That’s kind of the point of it, right? That’s the beauty of it. That’s the beauty of it. This is one of the beauties. It’s 69 in a font that’s kind of aggressive. That’s what we’re looking at here. It’s gotta be another, what about? Like a spiky font. What about a, well here I can draw it. What about 70. What about? L7 L7, which is a band. I think it would just be. I’m gonna L7 that. An eight. Because the six and the nine have to eat each other. Right. You know? Right. Yeah. But isn’t that? When the six and the nine get really close together. Oh, Stevie just cracked the code. That’s not the first time. So what Stevie is saying. Actually, that’s a six, that’s it. That’s not an eight. No. No, your nine is weird. Make your, make the big ball on your nine bigger. Why would I do that? There it is right there. You got like a music note. That’s a music note. Make a nine that’s essentially an upside down six and it makes an eight. People have been 8ing and they haven’t been 69ing And Stevie just figured it out. Like that? Yeah, they’ve been 8ing all right. 69 is people who are about to 8. I don’t think that’s We cracked the code! I really don’t think we have. No, cause look. Like this is a six. It’s an easter egg. And this is a nine, right? They’re really, like, the circles in them are just as big. So if I take this and move it over here. I mean, that’s an eight. That, that is a, that is not an eight. Yeah, cause you got a weird nine. Okay. All right. You know, back in my day, there wasn’t any freeze. It was just fight or flight. We didn’t even know about freeze. Well, what does that, what does that button do, Rhett? Oh, thank you. It what? Freezes you for 10 seconds. 9, 10. It doesn’t freeze you, though. I can do whatever I want to, but I was just counting for you, cause I know that numbers are hard. 7, 8, 9 10. My eyes started watering. Give us another one. A patron starts choking on a pancake in the booth next to you. A patron. Pancake. Okay. 69. Yep, yep, yep. I think we’ve exhausted it, Carney. It’s over. Okay. Choking on a pancake? What restaurant is this? It’s IHOP. – This is an IHOP. – Oh, okay. No, no, no. It’s a, it’s a cute little indie east side, it’s, it’s, it’s Kitchen Mouse. It’s Kitchen Mouse. Okay. Fans of the show. Yeah, exactly. Added pressure. What would I do? This has never happened to me. This has not happened to you. It’s happened to your dad. You know? No. Dick Bowser? He wasn’t there. My dad wasn’t there. Your dad wasn’t there? No. Wow, as many times as you’ve told it, I kind of thought you were there. Yeah. Only Dick Bowser was present. He choked on a steak. Did somebody come, somebody came to his aid? And. Heimliched him. Licked him. Heimliched him. What would I do? I’m. Okay. Dick Bowser’s another way of describing a 69. All right. Oh, yeah, he’s a lawyer. Why don’t we drag his name through the mud? I’ve stopped getting calls for clients. I don’t know what happened. Okay, I’ve got a complex answer, Link, and it’s for both of us. Because I actually think this is what would happen. Okay. You know what? If you say that I would run out of the restaurant, that’s not, like, you’re not my friend anymore. Hey, that guy’s choking. He’s like, oh, I’m outta here! Can’t see it! People struggling like that makes me sick! I said that you would freeze because what? There’s other people in the restaurant. Let’s be real. The first thing you would do is freeze. Your initial reaction. That’s why I said it was a complex thing, and I said we both would freeze, then fight. The initial instinct of both of us. If they’re choking and choking and choking. Is, like, somebody’s choking. The first thing I’m doing is, like, does someone at the table that’s with them. Yeah. Have this under control? Right. Because I’m not gonna be like, I’m not that guy. I’m not like, I’ve gotta be the one to do this. So I’m gonna be, I’m not a doctor, I don’t know exactly how to do this. So I first look to see if there’s help coming. And then, I’m gonna, that’s like a, that’s a 12 second wait. Yeah, they’re not gonna die in that time. After 12 seconds, if nobody’s doing it. Anyone that knows them an opportunity to step up. I’m going in, and I feel like you would probably do the same thing. I said that I would fight, but that’s not true. It would take you 12 seconds to register that it was happening. Well, I mean, we’re not the closest one to it. It’s another table. There’s other people there. You’re right. You’re right. I agree with you. I do think. I’m confident that I would step in. Historically, most Heimlichs happen from strangers because the people who know you, I think, are less likely to do it. Yeah. Psychologically, they’re like, come on, man. They’re like assessing how much they like or love us. Yeah, you know, it’s like, really? Really? You’re choking on your pancake? You know what I’m saying? Not falling for this. If it’s your friend, you’re like, yeah, drama queen. And the thing, I think this is the right thing to do. You give, you give people who know them an opportunity to be the hero. You also decrease the chances of giving someone who’s playing a practical joke. So, this is what 12 seconds feels like. Five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven. I thought it was ten. Yeah, you could just unfrozen at ten. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But just doing that is an example. It’s gonna feel like an eternity. But 12 seconds is not gonna compromise their life. If they’re making noise, you’re not supposed to give them the Heimlich because there’s air coming out. We’re not doctors. Don’t quote us on this. We’re not giving medical advice. We’re not giving medical advice, but I think if they’re making noise, you’re not supposed to give them the Heimlich. And if they’re joking, you’re not supposed to give them the Heimlich. Yeah, Are you joking or choking? Say it clearly! And if they say nothing, and you can see the fear in their eyes, then get behind them and just give them a, break some ribs. Some people, okay. Maybe it’s less than 12 seconds. Maybe it’s like I realize this person’s choking. Has anybody? Is anyone at their table doing anything? Yeah. Is anyone in the restaurant doing anything? Anybody here? Okay, maybe it’s seven. Given or received the Heimlich? Is that right, Lauren? The amount of time? At a time? I received it. You received the Heimlich? Were you joking or choking? I was choking. On what? A pill. A pill? Oh. Yeah, it was one of those like Dayquil pills, so it like melted and got hot. Oh, you choked on a Dayquil. Hold on. But. Not even a NyQuil? It was daytime. You, you like, it got stuck in your throat, but it, but that’s not big enough to like block your airway. Is it? It apparently was. I like, I like super couldn’t breathe, it, like, and my boyfriend at the time gave me the Heimlich and it like helped, but like, basically it lasted for like. 45 seconds that I couldn’t really get air in and then I hiccuped and swallowed it. It was not fun. So your boyfriend at the time, failed at helping. It didn’t come up. It did not, no. Okay, I know I have a few more questions and I just need to sort them out. Did the gel inside of it come out? Or did it stay intact? I think it’s, I mean. Like, when he gave you the Heimlich did Dayquil come out of your mouth? Yeah, right. It did not, nothing shot out. It didn’t deflate the pill. You hiccuped. It was sadly not comical. Hey, we’re not laughing. I mean, hey, we’re doing our best right now, though. I am smiling, but that’s because you’re laughing. I’m allowed. Wow. Anybody else? So, you dumped him for that? Oh. You’ve, Katrina, you’ve given and received? Same time? 69? I am not, I’ve been told the joke is done. Yep, I already said it. I already said it. Okay. Which do you want to tell us about, Katrina? You have to choose one. Giving was funnier. All right, was it a stranger? No, it was my husband. Okay. He choked on a nacho chip at a bar. Yeah, and the worst part was is I started giving him the Heimlich, and the chip flew out, and then the bartender was like, what the hell? Get out of here! You’re too drunk! And was like screaming at us. He thought he was like, wasted and vomiting. But he really was, about to die. It was really scary. And I cried for like 45 minutes. But you dislodged it. A nacho, huh? It was very scary. You saved his life. I did. Do you think it got sideways? I guess. But did that block the airway? Yeah, a nacho on top of the. I choked on a chip as well. When I choked, it was like a tortilla chip. Oh, these are pretty choky chips. Same night? No. Same bar? And I was with my friend and she just started crying and put her head under a pillow. So I had to run to find my mom. So, she flew. She did the flight. And your mom gave you the Heimlich? She did, and again, the chip flew across the room. Wow! Didn’t break a rib? Those are the best. Wow. No offense, Lauren, the fact that you’re, no offense, but the fact that your pill didn’t shoot across the room, kinda makes it a B story. Right. In the choking genre. I guess, I guess it doesn’t have to block the airway if it goes down the wrong pipe, totally. I’m thinking, my criteria’s a little too strict. I don’t really know how it works. I just know that hot dogs are the worst because they’re like the same size as your trachea and they just like get completely stuck sometimes. That’s why you gotta cut those hot dogs lengthwise with children. Go behind the scenes of the Good Mythical Tour with our new documentary available now on the Mythical Society, mythicalsociety.com
