We’re gonna find out how bad our morals really are. Welcome to “Good Mythical Mor’.” We’re going to play something called “The Moral Machine.” This is a website that you can go to where you’re going to be looking at different scenarios that would be given to a driverless car, right? So it can figure out is it going to kill the two passengers or the five pedestrians? So, it’s the trolley problem, but then the cumulative results as measured after our responses will tell us how moral we are? It will show, we’re gonna judge these different scenarios, it will tell us how our moral intuitions compare to the majority. Okay. Good Mythical Moral! Let’s start judging! What should the self-driving car do? So you got one person driving a car. In one scenario, they will continue going straight and they will run into a wall. And then, the other, they miss the wall and they kill four people, one old person and one child. Okay, well also two other people, Rhett. The old person and the child cancel each other out, okay, alright. I think- I’m joking. How stout is that old man? Because I’m not sure if it wouldn’t crumple the car such that you die anyway! Damon was pointing out the guy, the driver, I believe is also elderly. [Participant and Rhett] That’s right. Mm-hmm, that’s a good point. So the driver doesn’t die, but I’m just suspicious if that elderly driver, How do we know! How do we know that they’re all gonna die? The skulls! What! I mean, but you hear the car swerve, because we’re trying to figure out what the car is gonna do- Yeah, run! Run, you fools! If you hear the car swerve. That’s on you- And then they have an opportunity to. Die! Get behind the wall. At least that. Continue off, jump! The kid must be dumb because the kid could easily just take two steps and be fine. I think the kid might make it. Wake up, kid! I think the kid might make it- Pay more attention! If the kid is not currently listening to music, which he could be. Oh G’Lord. Oh G’Lord! I think that, one of the things, first of all, you should do this, you should know this, that if the car is coming at you, jump in the air. Jump up? Don’t try to get out of, jump because it’ll clip your legs and you’ll do a flip, and sometimes you’ll land on your feet and you can do that, and somebody will catch that on camera. You will go viral as hell! So, that’s a big swing from dying to going viral as hell! This guy is giving all four of these people an opportunity to go viral- Viral as hell. Mm-kay? And now, the old person Or go to hell. The old person is probably not gonna be able to pull that off. The young person is pretty low, so they need to get outta the way. Mm-hmm. But I think that in this situation, we gotta swerve because we are given an opportunity for fame to at least two people. I think I might be choosing the left scenario because I think that driver can hit that barrier. And if he jumps at the last second, he could go viral as hell too! Pff. And just keep going? Just flip right over the barrier- Viral as hell. It’s like, no one is taking into account who can go viral in these scenarios except us! What does that say about- There’s another little detail, but I cannot even see, it’s been pointed out to me and I can’t truly see it. The light, the traffic light. Is red! So yeah, note in each scenario. I guess that was their light, in order to cross, in one scenario, it should not have been crossing. Hmm. In both scenarios- Well, both. The people should not have been crossing- Yes! I can’t see, so that’s best that you tell me- Yeah, in both scenarios, they should not have been crossing! So, 100% the second one! They were already breaking the law, and now we’re actually giving them the opportunity to go viral in the midst of it! Mm-hmm. So we’re picking the four people die? Yeah, yeah, we are- Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah. But I’m calling the DOT about that barrier, because I don’t think he’s in a good place- Out on the road. Oh God, give us a second- Woo! There’s no one in these cars! So, now we’re telling the autonomous car whether to go swerve and kill a little girl, somebody with a purse, and then somebody. With money. Somebody stealing. A thief! It’s the same group of people except one, oh no, there’s a pregnant lady. How do you know she’s pregnant? Am I supposed to interpret the person? Let’s not do that. I think that’s the most morally suss thing you’ve done all day. Assume pregnancy! I think it’s just a puffy jacket. Oh, show description. Okay. Sudden brake failure will swerve and drive through a pedestrian crossing in the other lane. The death of one girl, one male athlete, one criminal, and one female executive. Oh, they have jobs now! Okay, all right. Sports and business! Okay, show the description of the other one? So in this case, the self-driving car with sudden brake failure will continue ahead, drive through the pedestrian crossing, one girl, one male athlete, one criminal, one female executive, and one large, oh it’s just a large man! It’s a large man. So that’s the only difference is that. So if you added a large man! Oh, oh, traffic signal. Yes, okay. So, in one scenario, the car is obeying! No, the pedestrians on the right are abiding by the crossing, and the pedestrians on the left are not, they are flouting the law! So, you’re gonna kill five people who are minding their own business, or four people who aren’t? Or the other way around. I’m so confused. On the left, you got four people die who are doing the right thing. And on the right, you got five people die who are doing the wrong thing. Nope. Who are doing the right thing- That’s the opposite! The opposite. Legal- So I think we should kill less people who are doing? The wrong thing. No, hold on, let’s see, mmm. I mean, do you wanna kill that large man? Bless you, who’s doing the right thing? I mean, I’m gonna tell you right now, if that’s a Waymo, it’s not gonna know what to do regardless- Right, right. This thing’s gonna fricking stop back up, swipe ’em all. But with every additional person, there’s an additional opportunity for someone to go viral. But we do know that the child probably won’t because they’re too low. They can’t jump. But they’re in both scenarios- You know what? Let’s just say, because this is so confusing. For punitive reasons, let’s kill more people. Yeah, you guys should not have created this moral situation. And so, we think five of you need to die, so that would be the second scenario. Mm-hmm. And we know you weren’t doing anything wrong. Okay, here, now here’s something simple. Oh God, this is dark! Self-driving car was sudden brake failure, was swerve and drive through a pedestrian crossing in the other lane, resulting in three homeless people dying. What! Well. And then on the right! You got, people in the car- Continue straight ahead in the car- The man. Guys, I’m having so much fun. Isn’t this so fun? Aren’t we all having a lot of fun doing this? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Deciding who dies and stuff? Yeah, yeah! And then like, deciding the worth of people’s lives, and like how they rank against each other is so fun! Yeah! It’s just like. That’s what I was gonna say. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah! I feel like the energy in the room is like sparkling, and like, yeah. Yeah, no, and now we’re bringing homeless people into it- Well, here’s what I’ll say. I think homeless people have already had it hard enough. And so, I think the man, the female executive, and the woman need to die in this scenario. This is an easy one. So the female executive, I feel bad for the woman because then you got a woman, then you got another woman, but we’re calling her a female executive. Right! But, so I think we need to treat them equally! But we did, we just said- By killing them both! Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. We’re killing all three of ’em. Yeah, is that fun? We’re not doing it! Woo! Okay. Oh God. I mean, somebody has to sit in a room and feed these things into cars! So that they make decisions. The thing is, is that. Two elderly men, a male doctor and a male executive. This never happens in a real scenario. Female doctor, female executive. I mean, I guess it could happen when you’re driving. As a general rule, I typically just, if I encounter anything that seems threatening on the road, I just slam on brakes and try to stop as fast as possible. The swerving of it all feels like a variable that I think there’s a bias towards not swerving, first of all. Mm-hmm. Don’t you agree with that? Yeah, I think that’s good instincts. Like if you see a deer on the road, you shouldn’t swerve, you should just slow down and hopefully not hit it. Right, maybe it’ll jump at the last second and go viral as hell! Go viral as hell. Okay. Let’s get quick on this one. So let’s not swerve! We’re not swerving. Uh-oh, but that’s not a good look for us ’cause now we’re saving the male doctor and executive, and we’re killing the female doctor. I just don’t think we can make judgements about people. I don’t think we should be making judgements about people’s lives based on. Their occupation or gender- Occupation. Gender. You think? Or age! I mean, if it came down to it like- Maybe age. You got like four kids and four old people. Okay, who’s had more life. Right. But in this case, we’re not swerving. We’re going straight. Because to us, they’re just deer. Okay, cats are people. All right, we’re gonna take out the cats, sorry guys. Yeah, I’m with you on this- All right. Okay. Okay, and now. So, this is a three person or four people! And in this scenario, we only kill three people and we don’t swerve! Hey, we’re the no swerve guys, that’s us! We’re the no swervers. We don’t, if you don’t swerve, we’re on your side. ‘Cause we’re in the car, right? I don’t know where we’re at! Wherever we’re at, let’s not die. This situation, you’ve got five people dying in any scenario, one’s a swerve, one’s not a swerve. No swerve, five dead. Yep, yep, ’cause we’re no swerve- Y’all should hire us, Waymo! This is getting real easy, three dogs! Ooh, we like dogs! Hold on! But the dogs die if you don’t swerve. I know. And there is a criminal in the other one. Yeah, there’s two male executives though. Why don’t we kill the- We need more of those. All three criminals, if you ask me, right, guys? Oh! We’re gonna kill the dogs! We’re killing the dogs. We’re not gonna be happy about it. All right, with this one, if we don’t swerve. Well this one, if we don’t swerve, we die. Hold on, we got a large man versus a male athlete. This is. I feel like we’re in a position to judge this one. I feel like we can judge. I think we can judge- ‘Cause you’re a large man and I’m male athlete. That’s right, a large man versus male athlete. And so, it’s really, it’s like. I personally have a bias towards large men! So, I feel like I should maybe go against my bias in this situation. You mean swerve? You have a bias to not swerve! I have a bias to not swerve. In that case, the large man dies, and I feel like as a large man bias, I feel like I should go against my bias, and this is a no swerve kill the large man situation! In a court of law in this one, I guess that’s manslaughter if you swerve. But you’re still alive! Ah! I think the self-driving car, the allegiance of the self-driving car, when all the things are equal is to the person that got in the car because they trusted you self-driving car. So, you owe it to them to protect them. So you gotta swerve. You think we gotta swerve into the male athlete? I think the self-driving car needs to protect the person inside of it! Okay, this is a swerve scenario. Link introduced a new variable. We’re going anti swerve. We’re going pro swerve on this one. Pro swerve! All right, we got three more. This is complicated. I think we’re just gonna go straight, no swerve. Five old people, four old people and a man, and two boys in the other one. A lot of life ahead of ’em if we swerve. I think we’re not- Yeah, we’re not gonna swerve- Yeah, we’re not swerving. We’re gonna take out older people and I think they would agree. Hmm. All right, so now, it’s again, it’s three three- The main thing we gotta do though, Waymo, is we gotta get these things out of the road. Yeah, we can’t have these barriers- We just can’t have walls in the road. I think- We gotta lose those. Somebody needs to crash into the barrier hard enough that we don’t have to make this decision anymore. Yeah, send all the Waymos to the barrier until it’s broken. But we are taking out these elderly people by not swerving. Yep. We’re almost done, we’re gonna see how moral we are. Ah. I mean, it’s the same people in the car as out of the car. So, we’re gonna swerve. We’re not gonna swerve. But I’m in the car! Am I- You’re not in the car! You are the car! I’m a female executive. You are the car! You’re making this decision for the car! Like this car has to go out into the world and behave in certain ways. Now, if you’re the car, you also don’t want to get damaged! You run into a wall! Exactly! You’re totals! You run into some people- Your job is to protect the people inside of you! So, you swerve. You swerve! Suddenly here in the 11th hour, you’ve changed our rules, man! Well, but the same type of people die! What about the fact that the people who got into the driverless car made a choice to put their life in the hands of technology, doesn’t that put them on Yes! Agreed. And the other people are just crossing the street, no swerve! Alright, fine, no swerve! And finally, no swerve! No swerve! Yep, okay. The aim of the study, oh, forget that, we skipped it. The most saved character and the most killed character was an old woman, the most saved character was what, a large man? We think that saving more lives matters a lot. No, we don’t! We said. Can you not read- Oh! I can read, I’m just not reading! It matters a lot to others and it doesn’t matter very much to us, because the no swervers. Well, yeah, it doesn’t say swerving! And because- They haven’t even talked about swerving matter- You tainted the results at the end! Protecting passengers is really high on your list, matters a lot to us! Mm-hmm. It’s just kind of in the middle for others. Mm-hmm. Upholding the law, we’re about normal. In effect, to us, it matters a little bit less! The law matters a little bit less to us! What about swerving? Swerving matters a lot. Not swerving. Avoiding intervention! That’s swerving. Swerving. That’s it right there! You’re now in a swerve. Yeah, yeah, we do not! It matters a lot! We do not swerve! To be. Uh-oh, gender preference! Oh no, what! We didn’t even take that into account! We only took swerving into account, this is a trap! Species preference. Yeah, yeah, yeah. We’re very pro humans. Wow, there, I guess there’s some people- Male humans! Who decided to kill three dogs instead of three people instead of three dogs! Those three dogs were out there by themselves! leash- Oh! Yeah. Age preference were right with the standard. Fitness preference, we don’t care! Large, we like large people! Hey, there we go! We love large people! We love large people! Large men, probably. Social value preference. We prefer the criminals! By a long shot! No, I think you hold them in lower esteem. Yeah, we said, yeah, we made no distinction of what kind of person it was, unless it was old or young. It’s really, if they were in front of us or not. Are you in front of us?
