What's the deal with probiotic snacks?
Welcome to Good Mythical More.
The latest... -Pro..., what?
Go ahead.
The latest science suggests that
probiotics are good for us, that your
gut microbiome is one of the most
important indicators of overall health.
And that the standard American diet,
also known as the SAD diet- Mm … which
is low in fiber and low in fermented
foods, leads to imbalances that
affect “infammation” and immunity.
“Infammation.”
Inflammation and immunity.
Well, so- I'm not sure that's how- I'm
glad you went, went ahead with that.
Um, so there's all these things-
Well, what, what were you gonna say?
I don't even know.
What were you gonna say?
Nothing as good as that.
Okay.
Or as paced as that.
When you're saying truth to people,
you gotta go slow, you know?
So they can just process along.
Because falsehoods move very fast.
And so you gotta slow down.
Yeah, you wanna lie fast and
you wanna tell the truth slowly.
Right.
Is that what you're saying?
Mm-hmm.
Um, this is a big trend.
And it's not just yogurt anymore.
I'm fully on the yogurt probiotic train.
Live and active cultures.
Well, they say that you
should be having three or more
fermented foods every single day.
You can speak faster if you want to.
And they also say that you should
be having- Three or more … 30
different plants every week.
And actually … No, hold on, hold on.
Don't … And before you
get too- It's too hard.
Okay, grandpa.
Before you get exasperated.
I'm not.
I'm just … I, I … It
doesn't seem achievable.
Coffee's a plant.
Nuts are plants.
So there's lots of ways to get plants.
But I'm supposed to count them?
Uh, what I'm getting at is if you
… Now, I'm not … Am I doing this?
No.
But do I intend to?
Yes.
And so if you wanna get your, your gut
doing the things that it should be doing
'Cause, like, yogurt … You can have yog-
… Like, me, me and you both probably have
kefir, as they … Or you're supposed to
say it, I guess, every single day, right?
Yeah.
I mean, you take your medicine with it.
Yeah.
I put it in my smoothie.
Yeah.
Right there.
Cheese, if it's not, like, super
processed cheese, like an American
cheese, but if it's, like, a
hard cheese or whatever, that's
technically a fermented food as well.
'Cause it's anything that
the process of fermentation,
like, brought something else.
But then you can get snacks like this
where they've done all the work for you.
Probiotic ice cream.
Alec’s Culture Cup.
Peanut Butter Cup.
Check that thing out.
Creamy peanut butter ice cream
under a dark chocolatey shell with
live probiotics and prebiotics.
Look at that.
There's a crackle top.
Simple and gluten free.
Look at that.
Right there on top.
Yeah, it says wait five
minutes to thaw, then crack in.
Give it a crack.
Did we wait?
Yeah, I think it's been longer
than five minutes off camera.
Do they… Let's see.
Uh, "a2a2 dairy helps many folks with
sensitivities enjoy dairy again."
Okay.
One of these cups is 630 calories.
That is a lot, isn't it?
For a little cup.
What's the taste like though?
Good
I mean, there's definitely, they're
not compromising on anything.
There's no like, "This
isn't real sugar," or…
It's very good.
Mm. What about, what's a2, a2 dairy?
But what do we know about that?
I think it's a, just a
certain type of dairy.
Special a2, a2 dairy helps many folks
with sensitivities enjoy dairy again.
It is a dairy that contains only
the a2 type of beta casein protein
Okay.
And therefore- And so that means that
it's less traumatic for your stomach?
It's pretty good.
Um- Pretty good stuff.
Very good.
Yeah.
Like, that's, like, really good.
All mammals naturally produce milk
with that A2 beta casein protein, but
something a long time ago that changed
and it mutated and became A1, so it's
like taking us back to our roots.
Old milk.
Oh.
Old milk.
That's what they call it.
We're, we're loving the taste of this.
We're a little concerned about
the calorie count, but we're,
we're gonna keep that over there
just to remind us how good it is.
It's number one so far.
What else do we have?
We have this, Rhett.
Read about it.
It looks like almonds to me.
Okay, so look, these
are fermented almonds.
Savory sourdough snacks.
Huh.
And look, they're gonna
explain some stuff to us.
Can I tell you what I'm tasting?
Is it tangy?
It's a bit tangy.
They're very light.
It's like, um, it's like a, about a
third of the weight of an, of an almond.
Well, why fermented nuts?
Maybe not that.
Well- Maybe it's just a little
lighter … more gut beneficial
compounds, more nutrients easier
to absorb, reduced anti-nutrients-
Very tangy … and irritants.
Gut Nuts were born from a delightful
snaccident When my s- Oh,
this is from a person.
When my sprouting nuts began fermenting,
those sourdough nuts tasted incredible,
felt easier to digest, and changed
how I thought about nuts forever.
So they sprouted.
They now, now they ferment them in a
probiotic brine, then gently dehydrate
them to preserve flavor and function.
Link- research links six daily servings
of fermented foods to improve gut health.
Gut Nuts make it easy to enjoy more
fermented f- so you got, th- th- I
think we might be onto something.
I don't know how I feel
about the phrase Gut Nuts.
Gut Nuts.
Isn't it super tang?
You reading this still or can I have it?
I like it.
I like it.
Oh, I like the packaging a lot.
Now I like Gut Nuts because
of the way that it looks.
Look at that color combo.
Gold, yellow, and, and deep orangish red.
We're big fans.
This is amazing Gut Nuts.
Of both Alec and Tim.
Tim makes Gut Nuts.
He's the chief- Maker?
Philosopher.
Chief philosopher.
Okay.
We get it, Tim.
You're woke up about your CEO-ness.
I like Tim, and they do taste
like, a little bit like sourdough.
Mm. Before you bring in that next
one, I just want to point out that the
calorie count you were giving on the
Culture Cup was for the entire pack.
It's much, actually a much
lower calorie count per cup.
All right.
That's important.
Oh.
Okay.
That's important.
Reel him in.
So we need to go back and
put that correction so Alec
doesn't come and sue me.
Oh, you want a lu- you want a
correction while you're saying it.
When I'm saying it.
So that at no point does he get upset.
'Cause, 'cause we
really, we like it a lot.
And now we like it even more.
Only 160 calories.
And again, I know people are
sensitive when we start talking
about calories sometimes.
I get it.
I understand.
Um, but there are those of us who do want
that information, and if I knew that that
little cup had 630 calories in it, I would
be like, "Well, I'm not gonna eat that."
But it doesn't.
It only has 160.
Thank you for that correction.
But, I mean, look at, look at this design.
Isn't that amazing?
This is next level.
We're big fans.
This is, like, this is Trader Joe's vibe.
This is, this is doing
nothing for me, Alec.
What?
This right here, Philosopher
Gut Nuts, I mean, this is next
generation graphic design.
I think that this … I don't ag-
disagree with you that this is…
This is next gen, but this is very
indicative, you know what I'm saying?
This made me… I wanted to eat this
because I was like, "Whoa. It's got i- a
chocolate I can crack on top?" It's just,
it's just giving Trader Joe's too hard.
Well, but Trader Joe's works.
Do- But it's not Trader Joe's.
Do some- do something better.
Do Gut Nuts.
And put the word nuts in there.
Next we have Munk Pack Probiotic Protein.
There are plenty of protein
bars to choose from.
How do you decide?
At Munk Pack, we say trust your gut.
Uh-huh, okay, that's cute.
That's cute.
One billion CFU probiotics and
prebiotic fiber to help support the gut.
Mm-hmm-hmm.
All of these companies have a, like,
the writing on the back is signed by the
co-founders or the head philosophers.
You, you have to do that now.
You got… It has to be from you.
You have to do that.
And of course, you gave us
the peanut butter cup because
you know we're the boys.
Look, there's a note
from Alec on the side.
Yep.
They all have to do that now.
Well, it tastes like a protein bar.
Yeah.
But… How much protein?
It's on the good side of protein bars.
Yep.
And- 15 grams of protein … it's
got damn probiotics.
It's got damn probiotic.
And it's got fiber in it.
Uh-huh.
I think, I don't know if all
fiber is prebiotic fiber, but
prebiotics are basically fiber.
It's just…
Prebiotics give the bacteria in
your stomach something to do.
Something to eat.
Something to do with.
Something to feed off of.
So it's i- it's not as special.
And does it give you a little bit of gas?
But that's the- … that's the bi-
the, um, bacteria doing something.
Look at how- You have
a couple little farts.
Yeah.
Look at how they've got a
little squirrel guy on there.
He's reminiscent of our Randler.
And remember our old Mythical
logo that had a tail?
Mm. They took that and ran with it.
Monk's got a little squirrel
tail like Mythical used to have.
Are you now saying that
this is, we were copied?
We're gonna be sued by Alec and Munk Pack.
Well, no, I think- What are we gonna do?
We're gonna sue Munk Pack.
They copied us.
They're definitely gonna sue you now.
Why they, why are they
gonna sue us for copying us?
Because they didn't, 'cause it's
incidental, and now you, now
you're saying that they copied us.
What if I said that I loved
it and it was number one?
Well, it, that, you'd be lying.
But I wouldn't get sued.
Okay.
Munk Pack is the best
thing we've had so far.
But not really.
You know what's up.
Yeah, let's just get,
let's just get rid of that.
We don't need that.
All right, what do we have next?
Ooh, kraut jerky.
Kraut jerky, cowboy flavor.
What?
I don't know about this.
What?
I've never heard of it.
Raw, organic, prebiotic,
vegan, dehydrated sauerkraut.
What's your opinion,
stance on, uh, kimchi?
It's growing on me.
Oh, I don't see it.
If I'm, if I'm really hungry-
Uh, we'll, we'll eat at, there's this, um,
Korean, uh, barbecue tofu house that, uh,
Christy and Lando, especially Lando, love.
Mm. And so we go there a lot, and I
have s- certain things that I'll get.
But if I'm really hungry,
they bring kimchi out first.
They bring all the stuf- They bring the
pickles and the kimchi- All the Korean
sides- … out first … are great.
And it's not really- My favorite
part of it … it's not like it's a
fancy Korean restaurant or anything.
It's like, it's just, like, a normal-
They do the sides … it's a sit down
restaurant … it's a Korean barbecue.
Yeah, but you bring out, they bring out
the sides, and when you're really hungry,
you just … That's when I c- I, I like to
take advantage of being really hungry to
like something that I wanna start liking,
like kimchi, because- I keep the kimchi-
I know that it's good for
the gut … in the fridge.
It's- And it's, like, I think
it … I would say more often
than not- This is kinda scary
looking … it's the last thing I
eat, 'cause it feels kinda guilt-free.
It's cabbage, you know?
A little strong for you?
Wow.
That is s- super tangy.
You're not a cowboy, huh?
Hell.
It's just, I mean, it, it looks so
sus, but if you leave sauerkraut out
forever, it just turns brown like
this, and it's still good to eat?
We've got a note.
Of course we do.
I'm gonna have to bring
out the magnifier, though
Sorry.
Gonna have to bring it out
You know, I'm gonna, I'm gonna have to
show… Let's see what you're doing.
You can't, you can't
hide your old man-ness.
See, look at this, Link.
See that?
I take a picture of it.
Yeah.
And then I set that down,
and then I just read it
"Fermented foods like sauerkraut
contain an abundance of good bacteria
called probiotics. Raw, unpasteurized
fermented foods-" Yeah, yeah, yeah
"… provide a vast array of probiotics.
These awesome bacteria," Garden Goddess
handcrafts fermented foods in small
batches using ancient techniques
to provide the most nutrient-dense
foods to support the tribe.
With love, S. Smith
And it's got her picture
Take a look.
That's her.
Yep.
That's her?
That's her.
It's interesting that the picture
of her that they put has a
backdrop and there's writing on it.
Yeah, that says, it's, it's, she's in
front of a thing that says the name of
the company, which is Green Goddess.
Okay.
All right.
That's honest.
Or Garden Goddess.
That- I don't wanna get sued.
It's Gr- it's Garden Goddess.
I wanna put, I wanna put this there,
and I wanna bring in Reboot Jelly.
Ooh, I'm gonna like this.
Because it's… Ooh, it's muscat
flavor and lychee flavor, which is
like, you know- Muscadine grape kind?
Like muscadine grapes.
Ooh, Rhett
That is a, that is a mushy gummy.
I love it.
Mm. I love it.
And I got the lychee ones.
How are they packaged in that box?
Are they individually wrapped?
If you, um, if you get as close as you
can get to Jell-O but still be, um-
That's beautiful … a gummy snack,
that's kind of the consistency of these.
Mm. These are good.
That's the lychee one.
Mm-hmm.
These are good.
Give me one of each.
Now- What am I, what am
I- … is there a note?
What am I eating?
Is there a note?
No note.
No note, guys.
Nope.
No note.
Note.
No note.
No note.
No.
No note.
It lacks the personal touch- I
know … we've grown accustomed to.
And it has kind of a, a CVS kind of a
quality to it, uh, in the packaging.
44 billion cells.
264 billion postbiotics.
Well, all right, so here we got
a prebiotic and we got a… What
was the other thing I called?
Prebiotic, um, and then pr- probiotic,
prebiotic, and now there's a postbiotic.
This is postbiotic.
Okay, we've got- What does that mean?
Listen, we've got a problem here, though.
And can you look up what's, what's
the difference between a, a pr-
a prebiotic and a postbiotic?
Mm-hmm.
No.
And the other biotic?
Okay, we have a problem, and Carney,
you might need to look this up as well.
Okay.
Because Munk Pack is bragging about
having no maltitol, no erythritol,
and no maltitol.
So maltitol, okay?
But the first ingredient in these babies
is- Erythritol … maltitol syrup, and
I think it m- gonna making me poop.
That's my guess.
I, I bet you it makes you poop. -Yeah,
if they're bragging about- But I don't
wanna, I don't wanna be sued, so can we
look up maltitol and w- what it does?
It is a sugar alcohol commonly used
as a sugar substitute in things that,
you know, proclaim to be healthy.
Um, and then some of the side
effects do include bloating, gas,
abdominal cramping, and diarrhea.
Yeah.
'Cause you have to eat the whole pack.
Do you remember that there was
a famous, we actually, I think
we made a video about this.
There used to be this giant package
of sugar-free gummy bears that you
could get on Amazon, and there were
those classic reviews of people who
had gotten the sugar alcohols and
just pooped all over themselves.
Yeah, the reviews were epic.
And, uh- As epic as the
diarrhea … so I definitely think
I'm gonna have to avoid that.
I was all excited about it, you know?
And do you remember Lay's Wow chips?
Yep.
Same thing.
They had the, uh, olestra in it.
Mm. And they were like, "Wow, these
taste too good to be true." And they
were, because similar side effects, like
soccer moms everywhere were just, like,
stuck in the bathroom for a long time.
Oh, okay.
Well, if you're into that
kind of thing, though.
Now there's a hole in the side of
this box, I just n- what is that for?
You, you let a little
baby owl live in there?
Turn, turn your culture
cup into a baby owl nest.
Yeah, 'cause a baby owl
would do great in there.
Right in there.
Hmm.
We have another.
Amagura chocolate.
You are?
Amazake fresh- No you're
not, you're Amagura … Ak-
You're Agura … Akara cookie.
What is happening here?
It sounds like a Japanese, uh, biotic
of some pre, post, or… No note
It's a dry biscuit of a cookie
It has no positive redeemable taste
except for a hint of chocolate
What exactly is this?
Ingredients, fresh okara is soy
pulp, almond flour, rice bran.
Hmm.
Amazake is fermented rice beverage
Am I saying this wrong?
Holler
Oh, yes, it's okay though
Kayln says amazake.
Amazake.
Amazake.
Beet sugar
Okay.
I'm getting no more information
off the back of this thing.
They're kind of good in a bad way.
Yeah, yeah.
It's just kinda, it's a subversive taste.
Mm-hmm.
Don't love it.
I'm putting that at the end.
Agreed, agreed.
I mean, y- are we wanting
these all the time?
I, how mu- how much do
you really need, guys?
Vegan Rob.
I think, I think you can we- uh, work
your way up to getting a lot of it.
Oh, vegan Rob.
We got a note.
We got a note.
Got a note from Rob.
These are puffs.
What kind of puffs are these?
Cauliflower.
Sorghum
Sorghum cauliflower?
Vegan Rob's cauliflower puffs are
delicious, crunchy, and so yummy.
Just one bite and you will fall in love.
Take a deep breath, exhale,
focus on the moment and what
you are doing for yourself.

Yeah.
Snacks, snack as clean
and as kind as possible.
Vegan Rob.
I mean, I know that, like- Coming on pretty strong.
… everything you do is an extension of who
you are in one way or another.
But I mean, a snack that
defines who you are?
Help define who you are.
Okay, that's fair.
Now- Ask me who I am.
Well, now that you're tasting this,
I want your initial reaction first,
then I'll ask you who you are.
Well, seeing as I'm the kind
of person who eats Vegan Rob's
sorghum cauliflower puffs.
Caul-ee.
And it's really a part of who
I am, it kinda defines me.
All right.
Uh, they're not that great.
They're bad.
The aftertaste is the best part.
The first thing that hit my
mouth- Hmm … I didn't like.
Did you eat two or one?
I ate one.
Second one's better.
Second one's- It's one of those
things your mouth adjusts to
Hey man, take a deep breath
Exhale.
Focus on the moment and what
you are doing for yourself.
I'm eating this thing to define who I am.
Are you feeding your inner soul?
Are you reducing stress and
anxiety with the crunch?
Yeah, I guess.
The proof's in the pudding, Rob.
Thank you for the note, Rob.
