Will this last forever? Welcome to Good Mythical More. There's a lot of products out there that are, quote unquote, B-I-F-L. BIFL? Buy it for life. Buy it for life. I'm not really … I mean, I understand the concept. I think I've played into it. We both have brought items that fit this criteria, and I've thought about it in general that way, but I didn't know about the BIFL, um, nomenclature. And of course, there's a- Yeah … subreddit. Where people like to analyze and agree or disagree about what, if a particular product is actually buy it for life or not. And let's start with w- what I held up, which is an Away suitcase. Now, let me just say, this is not mine. Mm-hmm. This is, uh, my oldest son's, which is why there's a giant dent in the top. Wow. And a giant … Well, a medium-sized dent right here. Uh-huh. And also, uh, one of the zippers, the zipper handle … Well, something's happened in here where this got jammed down there, but this zipper handle doesn't have a handle, so you have to use this zipper and zip it all the way to right there- Okay … to zip it up. Now, I, our whole family has Away bags. Not a sponsor. There's some contention on the subreddit. Let me just say that. I'll … Let me read what people are saying. Now, first of all, their lifetime care coverage includes complimentary repair services, free repairs for functional damage to your suitcase due to manufacturing defects or the unpredictability of travel, like a airline mishandling. Free round-trip shipping for luggage repairs and replacements, and then one luggage replacement within the first five years under our limited warranty if we're unable to repair functional damage. I had this happen Repair support continues for life of your suitcase and remains complimentary in Away stores. Right. I had an Away suitcase that I'd had for, I thought I'd had it for more than five years, and we s- sent it to them because one of, one of the zippers was kind of messed up, and it was just kind of beat up. You know what I'm saying? But it was still completely functional, and the thing that I've noticed about the Away suitcases is that we've had probably eight of these in our family. Never once have I dealt with a wheel problem. Yeah. And, and we have beat these things. I, we, we have a bunch of these, too. I actually had a zipper issue and sent it in. They sent me a new one. Yeah. D- and so- Same thing … you, you, you're gonna send that one in now? We're, we're gonna send this one in. Now, I had to find the receipt. Yeah. And then I actually don't think I found the receipt for the right one. I found receipts for other ones. And it still worked? But they g- were lenient about it, so they were good sports about it. So we've tried a couple other brands of suitcases 'cause the only thing I don't like about these suitcases- Put it up here. I'll tell you what I don't like … is the slidey. The slidey? So when y- so when you have two of these, like if … or, or three or four if you're traveling as a family, and you all put your suitcases on top of each other in the back of a car, there's no friction. Oh, yeah. They slide on each other. But it can- That might be an advantage it can help if you do like this. It hasn't been that big of a problem, but- You put them up that way … uh, we've tried a couple other brands, and the things that ends up happening The wheels, like I don't understand how they make these wheels so sturdy. But people don't seem to agree because this one person said, "My Away carry-on is doing well after five or so years. Average 25 trips a year. My zipper pull was ripped off my checked Away bag on one trip. The Away warranty was quick and easy to use. They had a new bag out to me in a few days. Zipper still worked, it was just missing the little pull tab." I was surprised they replaced the whole bag, which is what has happened to both of us. Right. But then this other dude comes in and says, "Away is all marketing, not a BIFL product. They've calculated the replacements into their quality and price. Keep asking for replacements, but also in your messaging to tell them how wasteful this is." Well… Okay. Well, maybe that is proven right. The thing I don't like about- Because we did, we did get a new suitcase that suitcase is that you have to open everything, you have to open it up and clamshell open it entirely to get to anything. Like, I always pack and then I got it by the door and then I remember I've got one more thing I wanna put in there, and if you unzip it a little bit, it's really hard to shove anything in there. And, and if you unzip the wrong side. You have to open it all the way and then, and then when you open it, if you haven't secured something, you're, you're in a heap of trouble. So what is your alternative? Something with- I- … a bag with zippers and stuff? I got a, um, yeah, I got- BIFL? I got a carry-on in Japan that has multiple ways to get into it, but I don't know if it's a BIFL or not. Okay. This, this is the BIFL that I brought in, my Red Wing boots. What year did we go to Australia for our tour? 2017, 2018? 2018. 2018. 2018? 2018. That's when I bought these, and, uh, it's very difficult to find negative reviews of Red Wings. The overall assessment is that they're a great BIFL product, even though there is no lifetime guarantee. Um- You have to pay to get 'em repaired … they're, you know, they're expensive, but they're … The thing with clothes that you buy for life is that- Y- you want something that's going to be fashionable. It's gonna stay in style. And I really feel like these have stood the test of time. You can still find these in all the stores that have, that I, I feel like have all the stuff that I'm still buying. So it feels good when I go in there and it's like, all right, yeah, they're still selling those. Because- And you've never done anything to the soles … they look at… No. Actually- Y- you have? Yes, I have. Oh, you re- repaired them. Last year I sent them in and they replaced the sole. Now, what is that right there? I don't know. Um, Mikayla, maybe you can guess. What is that? Dookie. Um, but yeah, you can see that I've got the complete so- I mean, I replaced, they replaced the soles. So they were worn- And I paid like 100- Worn thin … $150 for that. You're not really wearing these anymore. He, they replaced the inside too. When, when do you wear these now? Uh, winter. Winter. It's a winter shoe. Oh, I still wear them. They mold to your foot, but I, I gotta be honest. As much as I love them- Uh-oh … they're super heavy. Super heavy. And you've been working on your vertical. And they're not- They're not the, um, they're still not the most comfortable shoe after having them for almost a decade. Something about it, my foot didn't mold in a way that, like, I'm addicted to them. Sometimes foot shape- But they've been my f- … matters about what shoe is really comfortable for you. My fa- Yeah, it's like, um, I think it's a little too narrow for me. But- Do you remember how much you paid for them? They're still special to me. Well- Australian dollars … I bought them in Australian dollars. I probably paid $350 for them. Wow. roughly. So then you had to send them in to get repaired for what? $150, $200? Hun- $150. Yeah. So you spent like $500 and you don't love them? But that was, that was after … I really like them. Okay. He really likes them. He just doesn't love them. At the same time I bought that jacket, I, I j- This is an honorable mention. The same day I bought this jacket- I remember that 'cause it was a lot colder- And it was so, it was so much colder than we thought it was gonna be … in Australia, yeah. I mean, Montane is the brand. I don't … To me, this isn't about the brand as much as, like, having a compressible jacket like this, this has been probably the most uti- utili- utilized piece of clothing I have. Everybody needs one of those. And it's one of … It's not a big one. It goes under, like, when I … Everywhere I go and I think it might be cold, I take this and it becomes an underlayer. Like, if I, if I wanted to wear this jacket 'cause I like it, like when I went to Japan, I would have jackets that I like to wear that look good. I would wear this underneath it. This i- this is my favorite. I would've paid, I would've paid $400 for this. I think I paid $100 for it or something. They do have a lifetime warranty on those jackets, though. I did look it up. Oh, this one? Yeah, yeah. Montane? Montane. Yeah. Really? Mm-hmm. Well, that's good to know. There you go. You could treat it like crap if you want to. Well, dang. Okay. Uh, so I'm gonna keep this forever. Please do. And then I'll get a new one if it ever, something ever happens to it. Okay, we're gonna move on to some crew members' products. Uh, we have got Nicole's Lodge cast iron cookware, which I have the same thing at home. I could have brought mine. I have this size, and then I have the big'n. And I'm the only one … Well, let me just say, I was the only one in my house who would properly care for the cast iron, but now I have everyone on board. But it has taken a lot. It's shiny. You can tell that she's been, uh … What's it called? Seasoned. Seasoning it. Yeah. I mean, we, I cook s- The only thing I don't like about cast iron, it's heavy. So especially if you've got the big one and you got a lot of stuff in there, you gotta get, you, I mean, you gotta get some stuff- Leverage … to, to hold both sides. I mean, it doesn't have to be Lodge, but what does Lodge offer? Uh. This is like a $37 skillet. Yeah, I mean, lifetime, Made Right limited lifetime warranty covers normal household use. If your enameled cast iron chips, cracks, or is otherwise damaged during cooking, we'll replace it. If your cookware arrives damaged in its container, we'll also replace it. All right, so yeah. I think this is the kind of thing you can pass down to people, right? I mean, a cast iron pan that's well k- cared for. I mean, I think- And it's a cool one … one that's kind of abused. To pass down. You know? Because it, there's, there's so much history in cooking and feeding your family. It's kind of nice to know that you're cooking on the same pan as, as Grandma Nicole. Yes. And, and, and something that she cooked in there, still in there a little bit. Yeah. I was not necessarily a, a member of, but did peruse the cast iron subreddit for a couple of months. I will say that, and one of the things that you will see if you go to the cast iron subreddit is people … There's two sort of threads that happen, that make it to the top of the cast iron subreddit. The first is someone who has seasoned it so well that it's like a mirror. Like, someone who has just made it so smooth, and everybody's like, "G- …" Like, people get aroused by how smooth these can get. And then the second thing you see is someone posts a before and after of an old cast iron that they f- Rusty one a rusty ass one that they found, that then they went through some process. And there's this belief in the cast iron community that a cast iron is never lost. Like, you can always rescue a cast iron, no matter how … If it's red with rust, they still find a way to get it back. Now, it's not a process that I'm interested in doing, but Bu- buffing it basically, right? I don't know. I, I mean, I don't even wanna know. I don't wanna know all the stuff that you have to do to get all the rust off. But yeah. Uh, what's the next one we can look at? Casio watches. These are Biffle? Okay. Really? So this, this is Chappies? Um- These can get up to $9,500. Not, not this one. What? I'm, I'm starting to get into watches Maybe I'll… What, what's the appeal of Casio? Just the retro nature of the styling? The fact that they really, they kinda look the same? Well, that's kinda got a green tint to it. I like that one. Yeah, that's cool. Chappie, is it mostly just about telling the time? Okay. You're just a watch person. Um- I'm getting back into it. And you chose Casio because you wore them in third grade? Kind of, yeah. Okay. Can it do an EKG for your heart? Okay. Casio Pro Trek 2000T, 12 years and still going strong. Never needed a battery change. That's kinda crazy. And has been un- my unwavering companion. Well, some of them are solar What? Some of them have a little solar strip on them. Someone commented, "I like Casios, but they are all not perfect. People regularly break the seals while changing the battery. A sealed enclosure with only an opening for the battery would be much better. The fixture of the wristband, uh, is a constant point of failure. Plastic wristbands don't last forever, and the metal ones are not better or worse than any other brand." That takes a lot of effort to make that comment. Like, it's so semantics to me. Like, it's so- I don't, but it's a t- it's a t- it's a personality type. I'm telling you. Yeah. People who find things that are wrong with things and talk about them on the internet. Well, they just like to rate the, uh, BIFL-ness of it. That's what the f- that's what it's for. I don't think you can critique people who, in their own community, are doing what the community's for. Well, I can critique it, because just like they critique Casios, I can critique, uh, the process. What happened to this one, though? That, yeah, that one is broken, but Chappie still uses it because it's waterproof. So they'll hang it on their shower, I was informed. So they can see the time in the shower. Well, well, where do you put it, well, um, when you shower, where does it go? Oh. So you take long showers. So this is in your shower. Maybe I'm just running late. Maybe you're just running late, okay. Huh. We need one of these for Shepherd. Yeah, I, I like the idea of having a clock in the shower. Shower clock. I've started, um, keeping my watch just outside. I put it up beside my sink when I get out of the shower, 'cause that's when I can get distracted and things get out of hand. Y'all- If I wear this in the shower, it makes me, it, it thinks I'm scuba diving. Yeah. So I don't … And I think you're not really supposed to get it wet. You can't. Y'all believe in the concept of time like that? 'Cause when I get in the shower, it's just, everything is just timeless. Yeah. And I just don't think about anything. I just let the water consume me. I understand that as well. I've started, um, like, role playing in the shower. Yeah. That I am, like, I'm like, man, I'm, I'm under a waterfall that is hot in the middle of nowhere, and I just start, I just start fantasizing about being in an, in a, in, in like a w- a hot waterfall. Like a hot spring, but it's a waterfall and it's right over my head. I do that. And you're, like, butt naked there still, too? Oh, yeah. Yeah? Oh, yeah, absolutely. So being in a nice shower that was a result of you and your wife's redesign, beautiful shower, I've showered in it one time. Uh, it, there was a video. Uh, that's not enough of a fantasy? Some- You have to then be like- Yeah … I need to be outside somewhere? Other times what I'll do is I'll get in the shower, like two days ago, before I went with the waterfall fantasy, I was just, like, with the, the gratitude of reality and like, man, look at this. I can go into this box- Yeah and turn this thing, and all of a sudden, hot water. It could be scalding. Yeah. I can put, I can get water the exact temperature I want it, and I can stand right under it, and then I got a, I have another one that comes in from over here. Yeah, you're in s- like, anyone who can take a hot shower- And I'm like, yeah, this is special is in such a sliver of the, of humanity. Appreciate the hot shower. Like, there's such a small percentage of every person who's ever lived that on demand, press a button or turn a knob- You just coated in hot- … and you got hot water … hot, clean water. That's crazy. Yeah. Incredible. Yeah. And I'm like, oh, crap- It's crazy I forgot to take my backpack off. Nice transition. But you're still butt naked in the fantasy, so you have a backpack and you're butt naked. Pretty hot, right? No. That's not what… JanSport. Don't g- don't, don't get me wrong. When I get out of the shower, I carry it like this and then I kinda go, huh, I walk away like that. Is it Jan Sport or is it Jan's Port? I think it's just JanSport, and I only say that because there was a drag queen on RuPaul's Drag Race named Jan Sport, but they called her just Jan, because JanSport is copyrighted. How old is this thing? It's got, it's like Patagonia. Yeah, that whole Patagonia thing. If you followed that. Yeah. Well, they rep- lifetime, limited lifetime warranty. If your product covered by this warranty fails due to manufacturing defect. Yeah, of course, but Only unaltered and unmodified items. Not gonna work, Chappie. Are in original workmanship or cover. This warranty does not cover damage caused by accident, improper care, negligence, normal wear and tear, or the natural breakdown. This is basically a, it's- Limited. Very limited Emphasis on the limited part of the lifetime warranty. So- This is something, this negative review down here at the bottom is something that I see, uh, about a lot of brands. So, like, this, this person says, "My kids, uh, both have JanSport bags. Absolutely not the product of my youth, just generic backpacks made out of some synthetic material." Mm-hmm. Yep. So I don't know whether or not that's true, but I last year got a Filson bag, and it's one of those over-the-shoulder bags, 'cause I was like, "Hmm, I'll be 50 in a couple of years. I gotta stop wearing a backpack." I still have a backpack, and I still do wear it. Uh, but I like having the option of the over-the-shoulder bag, and I got the, I think it's a waxed canvas bag, so it's not a leather bag. And as I went into the subreddits for Built For Life, Buy It For A Life, the Filson, everyone's talking about, "This is not like what my granddad had, because private equity has bought this, and it's not as good." And I mean, listen, I'm only a year in, and I don't know. It's the best bag I've ever had, but maybe I won't be able to give it to my grandkids. But how important is giving a bag to your grandkids? I, I mean, by the time they … I'm dead and they get it, I won't even know. I'll be dead. It … But it is one of those things- … that would be cool to give- Get another, get another bag … to your grandkids. I mean, like, a skillet, good idea. It feels so s- A, a bag. It's sturdy, though. It feels sturdy. It, it's personal. It's, it's gone on adventures with you, or presumably. I, I think it's a good thing to pass along. It's sturdier than, no offense, Chappie, but it's way sturdier than this. Yeah. Like, it's got, it's a thi- and the zippers are really, really stout. It feels like it's gonna last forever. But I don't think anyone- one's foot is gonna, like, fit in my boot in a way that they're gonna wanna wear it. I mean, I've worn, trying a lot of thrift store boots on before. Yeah. If you get a b- Still smells great … if you get a boot that's been molded to somebody… I did that one time. I got some combat boots I wore from one day when we did that goth sketch. Right. And my toes went numb, because somebody else's foot, who was the same size as my foot- Yeah … had, like, dipped in a different place. You don't want that Pressure points That's bad Yeah, you don't want that I got to the bottom of the Jansport mystery Okay Murray Pletz Bless you Named it after his- I'm sorry, I am interested Named it after his girlfriend in 1966. Her name was Melissa. No, just kidding, her name was Jan She was sporty, huh? I don't know about the sports part And then they broke up? But no, I think, I think, uh, Murray Pletz, RIP, he's no longer with us, but I think he named it after his, his love and they got married Wow Okay She's been riding on people's backs ever since Yeah Well, spend that money. Yeah, we've helped you justify it Visit votelikeabeast.com to make sure you're prepared and informed to cast your vote in this year's elections
