Today we answer questions
from way, way back.
Welcome to Good Mythical More.
We got some questions that were
posed to us many years ago.
2009. 2009. Maybe, maybe some
other years, but as early as 2009.
This was on what was called the Rhett
& Link Community, our old fan website.
Yep.
And, uh- We had a place where, uh- It's
not particularly active … Mythical
Beasts could a- ask questions,
and very early on I think we would
answer some of the questions.
Oh, yeah.
Then it became more fan-run
and just became a fan place.
Uh, but now we're gonna go back
in and see if we need to update
some of those answers here.
So you wanna read the first one?
This is posted by Sasha Ray.
"Do you think either of you
will ever host an SNL?" Yeah,
I think I will, but only me.
"I have this dream that someday
one of you, or each of you- One
Link or Rhett will host
Saturday Night Live.
Now, this might be a really
obvious question, or it might
be a really ambiguous question.
I don't know.
Perhaps you've got a friend
who knows a friend in New York
City, so never say never, right?
Or maybe you know SNL isn't
the scene you wanna be seen in.
I guess I should stop assuming things
and let you send over an answer.
So, what do you say?
Hosting SNL a possibility in the
foreseeable future or a no-go?"
And we can see what we said.
Do you wanna answer it now, or
do you want … I, let's answer
it now and see what we said then.
I think what, what I would say
now is we're not gonna be asked.
Unless… It, it would just require… I
mean, I'm not gonna s- never say never.
It would requ- You, in order for it to be
asked, it would require- In order for us
to r- it would require s- Something else
happen … something to happen, like for
us to get caught up into something, like
maybe we're the stars of Obsession 2.
That's it.
You know?
It has to be something like that.
Yeah, so it's probably not gonna happen,
but- I think we're seen as a little
too boring, a little too- Yeah, I mean,
we've been, we've been there, done that.
We've been- You like us because
you can count on us to be who
we are and we've always been.
We're answering questions from 2009.
However, if asked, yes, I would do it.
We would say yes.
We would say yes.
No.
Uh, and there, there have been
duos to- But we don't expect to be
asked … uh, to host, by the way.
It, it's not typical, but they
do have duos sometimes host.
Okay.
I can't name any of them right
now, but they have had duos.
Somebody look that up so we can verify.
Looking it up now.
Okay.
Um- What, what did we say then?
Let's take a look
Hmm.
Okay.
Re- you read your answer.
So I said this on June 11th, 2009,
and back- Zoom in a little bit if
you would … back when I could
read something that was this small.
Uh, is there any way to zoom in?
I do have your answer back here,
too, if you want me to read it.
I can read it.
I'm just gonna have to get my
face a little bit closer, unless
we can figure out how to zoom in.
We could, you coulda read it
back in 2009, I'll tell you that.
Oh, perfect.
Perfect.
There we go.
Perfect.
So now scroll down a little bit.
All right.
Or am I scrolling down?
You can scroll.
You can scroll.
Oh, look at me.
You don't have a mouse.
There you go.
Hmm.
I gotta say I'm flattered
that you would even ask this.
Never really thought about it.
Obviously, we'd have to make
some significant leaps and
bounds in our career to qualify.
And I'm not sure they even accept duos.
See?
I, s- my brain's in the same place.
So I'm not too worried about it.
Would we hesitate if asked?
Of course not.
I'm reasonably certain we could do
a better job than Michael Phelps.
Oh.
Oh, but then I responded and said,
"Actually, I was recently asked
to host SNL, but turned it down.
Senior Night Lillington-
Hey … doesn't bring the exposure
one might think." Oh, but I knew.
I knew.
Did you notice Michael Phelps
made a cameo in Beef season two?
Uh, yeah.
I did notice that.
It wasn't that, it wasn't hidden.
I know, but I just- I was watching
the show, and yeah, he was in a scene.
It wasn't- I'm just saying
he's a great swimmer.
That's about it, yeah.
He's an incredible swimmer.
I found a list of duos.
Um, so- In the finniest, in the finniest
scene … Tina Fey, Amy Poehler.
Makes sense.
Yes.
Mary-Kate and Ashley.
Okay.
Olsen.
Olsen.
Thank you for clarifying.
Uh, Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey.
Hmm, unnecessary.
Uh, Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger.
Ooh.
This was- That was probably for Batman.
What was Alec Baldwin in Batman?
That was for- Kim Basinger
was … The Getaway.
The film The Getaway.
He was just there- Ah … 'cause
they were together, right?
That's weird.
Roseanne and Tom Arnold.
Okay.
Uh, Chevy Chase, Steve Martin,
and Martin Short did one together.
Sometimes they do trios.
They do trios sometimes.
Okay, so they, they do, they do bend the
rule from s- from, from time to time.
Not for us.
So we gotta just do
something really significant.
The most we can hope for is
to just be, um, if, if they
make fun of us in a sketch.
Yeah, that, yeah.
But that's gonna require
us doing something- They-
that's gonna be really not
good … that's true, 'cause
they did that for The Try Guys.
I didn't wanna say it
specifically, but you did.
Yeah.
Next question.
Next question.
What do we got?
Next question.
What do we got?
Next question.
What do we got?
Next slide.
Next slide.
What do we got?
"What sort of music do
you guys listen to?"
Posted by Elise OneEyedMooseMonkey.
"I gotta say, you guys make
some quality music." Thank you.
"Just curious as to what you like to
listen to. Do you have a fave artist
or style? Is there any particular
genre or artist you really can't
stand to listen to?" I'm trying
to not burp while I'm reading.
Yeah, music makes you burp.
Uh, what year was this?
Do we know the date of this question?
Two, 2009-ish?
2009, yeah See, 2009, I, I was,
I was very far from, uh, 2009.
Yeah, I hadn't rekindled
my, my- Your hip hop love?
… my hip hop obsession.
My musical taste was about the
same as it is now 17 years ago.
So you probably said, like … I probably
didn't even love yacht rock then.
Did I love yacht rock in 2009?
Hmm.
Rhett loved folk.
That's our answer.
I might've s- we probably- Sad, maybe
you s- Rhett said he likes sad songs.
I wonder if in 2009 I would've
said s- I would've said something
about the Avett Brothers.
I bet you- I don't think I
would've said anything about
Jason Isbell yet, 'cause I was- No
kinda just about to discover him.
I think you would've said s- songs
sung by women that make you sad.
Which is still true, right?
You like it when women make you sad.
Women make me sad, man.
Yep.
And I love it.
What do we say?
Okay, let's, let's, let's come down.
Oh.
Oh, God.
You're replying a lot to these.
Okay.
Okay, here we go.
Here's a list of artists.
Uh, let's see how, let's see
if I'm still on the same page.
In my most recently played on iTunes.
Oh, yeah.
iTunes.
This is pre-Spotify.
Okay.
Avett Brothers.
Yes.
Fellow North Carolinians.
Okay.
Which we ha- we actually recently met
the Avett Brothers for the first time.
We met the Avett Brothers.
We finally met the Avett Brothers.
After all of these years.
Uh, why and how?
Can't tell you that.
It's, it's, um- Can't tell you that … we
were guests of theirs, made an appearance
on something that, um, is theirs to
talk about, not ours to talk about.
So that's a little tidbit.
And then I was able, the, my favorite
part of, uh, meeting them was being able
to, well, as I said, plus they wrote
a song about my sister-in-law, Pretty
Girl from Cedar Lane, which is true,
and I was able to tell them that, and
that was, uh- A story for another time
a story for another time.
All right.
Sufjan Stevens.
Uh, I'm still, still liking him,
but not l- but more, I liked him
a lot more in 2009 than I do now.
I'm not into him much now, but- The el-
the electronic stuff is not my thing.
Merle Haggard, of course.
I ordered a record, a Sufjan
Stevens record this morning.
Which one?
Um, he's, uh, that's, it's, it's
a compilation of his Christmas
albums into one vinyl, 'cause
it's never been released on vinyl.
Oh, sick.
And when I was, when, uh, the kids were
younger, we had this, we had the, the
CDs, like a CD box set of his, like,
Christmas music, which, I don't know, it's
j- it's always been, like, special to us.
So I was like, "I gotta get this
record." Read all these quickly.
Here's the women that make me sad:
Adele, Regina Spektor, and Feist.
I don't know why I said U2.
I said I'm not a huge rock fan.
I think maybe I was thinking I
was about to go into a U2 phase.
I can, I can attest
that it never happened.
Iron & Wine and Jackson Browne.
All right.
Okay.
Did I say something?
You did.
As we were recently writing a song for
the Science Channel, I feel it kind of
got me on a Journey/Phil Collins kick.
Oh, so this is, like, yacht rock adjacent.
We wrote the chorus, and I was
like, "Dang, I think we accidentally
stole part of the melody from someb-
somebody in the '80s, maybe Journey."
Uh, that's, that's true.
Couldn't put my finger on it, so I added
a Journey station to my Pandora app.
I ha- I use Pandora on my iPhone.
That's when I rediscovered Phil Collins'
Easy Lover, which I still love that song.
Uh, I have that on vinyl.
I'm probably still gonna spend my birthday
money on Simon and Garfunkel remastered
set of complete albums and then balance
that with some rap album of some sort.
Oh, did that happen, do you think?
Neither of that happened.
Neither.
You're just talking.
Just like me and U2, just making stuff up.
I think all, a little bit of this
was, uh, what we didn't know was
called back then Oura farming.
Oura farming.
Yeah, we're just, we're just
blowing smoke up y'all's skirts.
Yeah, just so you could get somebody
to say, "I love the fact that
you like Simon and Garfunkel."
I like Simon and Garfunkel.
I was on a kick.
Oh, yeah.
Your birthday money is kind of sending
me, because how much money would
you get on your birthday in 2009?
And from who?
Your mama?
Grandmama sending you a $40 check.
I don't get, I don't get
any birthday money now.
You didn't get any birthday
money in 2009, did you?
Why'd I get … I, I guess I did.
I don't know.
Okay.
Uh, let's- My mom will give me a 20.
Let's hear a next question here.
Okay, this is from Brian Williams.
Have you ever thought- Is
it not the news anchor that-
Uh-huh … maybe lied a little bit?
Yeah, but that's not him.
Have you ever thought
about going into improv?
You know, scenes with little or no prep.
You do it a lot already, I can tell.
You two are really quick on your
feet, and you would dominate.
Uh, I probably said … I
mean, what I would say now
is Improv energy s- scares me.
There's something about when,
when, when improvisers are not
improvising, there's just energy.
Just, I don't know how
to fit into that energy.
I just don't know.
I don't know.
Yeah, I don't think this is, uh,
something that e- either of us… Like,
I see- But did we g- did we say that?
Did we say we don't- Were we honest?
Would I, would I have the guts- Do
we know- … to say that in 2009?
Well, let me just, let me just say, in
2009, that was, that was a long time ago.
And so I th- I think we have since
learned, this was, that was before GMM.
So you got, like, all this experience
of doing the kind of improv that
we do that has caused me to learn
that I don't think I would be good
at… Like, I see these clips of
actual improv people, like, they're
on a stage in front of an audience.
Mm-hmm.
And I'm like, okay, I mean, if I
had to be there for something, I got
asked to do it, I could probably,
like, hold my own, but is this, like,
something that I would excel at?
No, I do not believe so.
No, I don't think I would either, at all.
So let's see if we, we,
we could see that coming.
And did you ans- you
answered all these first.
I didn't answer this one at all.
If by going into improv you
mean joining an improv team
at a comedy club, not really.
If you mean doing more
improv with our videos, sure.
Those last two Father's Day
videos we made as each, uh, ch-
other's fathers were really fun.
Okay.
And I think all of our Man on the Street
videos are essentially improv, and
we haven't done many of those lately.
So, yes.
I guess maybe what we were
saying is improv on, on our own
terms, which is the way that we
would answer that question now.
Okay.
Also, I'm r- seeing now
that my name was Shabazz.
I was gonna ask about that.
Excuse my ignorance, but,
like, why is it Rhett Shabazz?
Everybody, everybody had a name of
their particular- Mythical Beast
Mythical Beast.
Oh.
So you would have your real name,
and then your Mythical Beast name.
But Brian Williams did not have that.
He didn't.
He didn't follow the rules.
We shouldn't have answered the question.
Brian Williams is his Mythical Beast.
Yep.
Brian A. Williams.
Let's look at the next one.
Celebrity moments from Robin.
Robin Dufeo.
Hello to the Dufeo family.
I don't know what you guys are up
to now, but I hope you're well.
Robin was, uh, very
helpful for many years.
At what point in your career so far
have you felt the most like a celebrity?
Was it being recognized in
the Salt Lake City Airport?
Shooting on set in New York City?
I bet you that was the
Science Channel thing.
Something else?
I'd love to hear a story that
would have hap- wouldn't have
happened without your rising fame.
2009-
I wonder what we said … was
the year that the Red House
furniture commercial was going- So
maybe- … viral, and we got on CNN.
I remember that.
You did.
I did not participate.
'Cause it was an improv exercise
and you weren't into it.
No.
You didn't want me to say something
racist, bi- accidentally racist on CNN.
Well, it- 'Cause it was a touchy
commercial that was about racial
reconciliation, but also we were
at the airport and we, and I
didn't wanna put it on speaker.
Right.
And I didn't wanna talk to them.
Right.
I didn't wanna improv with CNN.
Let's see what was- Yes and-ing.
Let's see what we said.
Okay.
I answered this recently.
Oh, Link came in quick.
It makes me feel good when
a stranger recognizes us.
Especially when it's just
me, Rhett's not there.
And I have a mustache.
What?
Especially when Rhett's not
there and I have a mustache.
I mean, they must really know who
I am to recognize me in disguise.
That happened at a Mexican
restaurant Sunday before last.
Are you being honest or facetious?
I think I'm being very sincere.
This is how I would answer questions
in 2009 I said, "Something happened
today that relates directly to this."
Oh.
We're in Alabama shooting another
Rhett and Link commercial for a
small business that we were shooting
the Cullman Liquidation commercial.
Okay.
On August 13th, 2009, we
were in Cullman, Alabama.
I mean, we're in the middle of nowhere.
Just after we finish shooting today, we
stop by a random gas station for a drink.
My hair is all matted down because I
was wearing a hat in the video, and
Link w- has on sunglasses and a hat.
What about a mustache?
As we walk out of the gas
station, a guy pumping gas yells,
"Rhett and Link?" He was a fan.
We took a picture with his dog.
This is happening more and more, so
while I don't necessarily feel like a
celebrity, we definitely appreciate people
saying hello when they recognize us.
It's a reminder that people are
really responding to our work.
Okay.
And then you made a jokey joke.
"Um, Rhett, that guy's related
to me. I didn't mention that?"
So a little two-hander there.
Yeah, yeah.
A little two-hander for the fans.
So it doesn't sound like
we were famous in 2009.
2009. Nope.
Are we famous now?
Do you feel like it?
Who, who's not famous?
You know what I'm saying?
I don't know.
After that Coke Freestyle machine
thing, oh, boy, there's no going back.
That's true.
Um, next one
Okay, this is Steven Laird.
Biggest comic influences?
I read Born Standing Up
as recommended by Rhett.
Great book.
Steve Martin book, yeah.
But who are some of Rhett and Link's
other comedic and/or musical influences?
I would have to think that
we said David Letterman.
Um… Comedic influences?
I probably said something like, "I
don't really like to watch comedy
because I don't wanna be influenced.
I don't have any influences."
You didn't say that.
Flight of the Conchords probably
w- is, would be mentioned.
Let's see.
Let's see what we said.
Our answers were very, um
I don't know what the word is.
Okay.
Groomed.
I've been asked this question a number
of times, and I think my answer is
going to be pretty disappointing.
How's that for a tease?
Or unexpected.
I don't have a comedian who I really
look, really look to or have ever looked
to as a direct example or influence.
No doubt that I've been passively
influenced by a number of comedians,
but I don't have anyone in particular
that I look to for inspiration.
Steve Martin's book, Born Standing
Up, was inspirational and helpful in
a number of ways, but I don't take a
lot of cues from him and his style.
Honestly, I think my biggest
comic influence is my dad.
We have similar sense of humor, and
my family has always been an audience
for my dad, which in the same way
my family's an audience for me.
He became a law professor, I'm
convinced, because of the built-in
audience on a daily basis.
I, you're almost un-
understandable right now.
Do you think you answered
like that because- Do you know
what he's saying, Mikayla?
I feel like he answered because,
like that because he thought
he was gonna get famous.
And so he didn't wanna, like, name a
specific one because this famous person
was gonna go back and be like, "Hey,
remember on Rhett and Link Community?"
He's just trying to be Andy Samberg.
Right.
Yeah.
Um, no, I, I- I think that's true, though.
Your dad- I do think this is true
because we, we have a, we talk about,
and I think this answer about David
Letterman has been something that came
more after we started doing GMM, and
there's, like, the silly stuff that
we do, like a silly talk show format.
We were, I mean, we were big fans, but
I think contextualizing what we do, I'm,
I'm certain it made its way in, but the
Letterman sense of humor and your dad's
sense of humor were not, were kinda
sim- the dry part of it, the r- Mm-hmm
the kinda dry delivery.
Yeah.
Your dad always had the quips.
But, like, when y'all wrote things
back in the day for, like, whatever
show you were doing at that time,
like, did you have influences then?
I, I think the musical comedy thing-
And you didn't wanna name them?
… was really the answer.
I mean- We should have
had influences, Mikayla.
We were, we had to be, we- Maybe if
somebody would've said yes to something.
We had to be in, we had to be informed
and dodge in our minds what Flying to the
Concords and Lonely Island were doing,
but, uh, in an, in an effort to try to get
somewhere close to that level, which we,
which we- Got it … which we weren't at.
I didn't answer this one.
Yeah.
I noticed that.
I noticed that.
Next.
Oh.
"Do you guys have any tattoos?" All
right, so if this is around the time that
we were doing the Coleman Liquidation
commercial, we had not done the, uh,
the Austin, Texas- True Blue Tattoo
… True Blue Tattoo commercial, which
dig it up if you wanna look at that.
Uh, I don't, I th- I don't think it … It
wasn't a big one, but it, uh- I think I
would answer this and I would've said,
depending if the, if you're right about
the timing, then I- We don't have tattoos
… I would say, "I don't have tattoos and I
don't think I'm ever gonna get tattoos."
I think I would've added that, 'cause I
didn't think I would ever get tattoos.
Not, I had nothing against them, I
just didn't see a reason to get them.
Maybe I just said, "I think tattoos are
cool on other people." Let's see it.
You answered nope.
But every time I see some dude
with a full sleeve of tattoos, I
think, "Man, that's cool. Maybe I
should do that." Kinda what I said.
I guess I never will though,
because we play different characters
and we can't afford a makeup
artist who could cover them up.
Угу
Oh.
You were being insincere, man.
I'm getting my eyebrows tattooed tomorrow.
He's so funny.
I mean, Amy thought it was funny.
I actually laughed out
loud while reading that.
I'm so easily amused.
He, he, he, very funny, Link.
Wait, you are kidding, right?
Oh, and look.
No, I'm not.
And see, Emily here says, "Oh, wow,
that's incredibly ironic that you said
you'd probably never get one considering
the video you guys posted recently."
This is 2010.
"I'm guessing, though, that covering that
up for your videos isn't going to be a
problem." Talking about the butt tattoo.
The butt tattoos.
That was our first tattoos.
Mm-hmm.
Rhett, you had a second comment.
You said, "I'm not planning
on doing any butt shots in our
videos," and you did do butt shots.
Except for extreme close-ups
that show our tattoos.
We did butt shots?
GME, that one time.
Yeah, we've shown our butts.
We have.
We have.
Who knows what we'll show next?
You don't remember that, Link?
I don't.
Do you want a reminder?
No.
What happened?
Hmm.
You had your butt waxed.
Oh, yeah, that.
I remember that.
I remember that.
Mm, I remember that.
I remember that.
Go to the next one.
I remember that.
