you for supporting our sponsors who support the show yes doo doo i I’m not going to do Jeff Goldblum this time you know I appreciate all the positive feedback I and also the construction criticism constructive criticism I received about my Jeff Goldblum impersonation you did in the comments yeah they’re like if you would do this it would be spot-on if you do this if you would do a different impersonation it would be a good impersonation it’s basically all I took that I wonder if when people like hone impersonations if like people give them written notes about it like if you would just do this and I’m just writing you a letter about it you could like I don’t know any impressionist that does that exist in the comedy world anymore it sure people still do that we don’t too many hazards okay now I fully expect just because we’ve been around on the Internet long enough to know how it works now that we will get some very passionate people commenting on the episode today people who are pointing you to all the great reasons why the earth is flat and why you believe a conspiracy and you’re just falling for it and so we’re going to take some time to talk honestly about that and are these people well I think the question that we’re going to pose to ourselves is why do we believe that Flat Earth is gaining momentum when there’s so much scientific knowledge these days but but I’ll I’ll ask the question excuse me first off usually if if Eric Dubay it is it his documentary I mean just because you have a document on YouTube which yet you know what I didn’t watch it I didn’t I didn’t want to watch it because like you’re not informed so in one sense I’m not informed if I watched it Kevin you’ve watched some of it right and did it sway you because I didn’t watch it because there’s no way it can sway me unless you tell me it’s wave you a little bit no I mean they make interesting points but like entertaining points no interest no listen I it’s compelling I haven’t watched it but I’m gonna tell you right now the average person just like we said in the episode the average person if you just were born one day and you just wake up and you just like live on an island somewhere you’re going to believe that the earth is flat right it isn’t like we know that the earth is flat from just everyday observations I mean maybe if you take a plane or you go up in a balloon or whatever but just the average person you’re just like my experience is the earth is flat it took people with sophisticated scientific minds to begin to understand and to piece this together and of course it’s been confirmed time and time again but the thing is is that the average person doesn’t really understand and I am included in this I mean to a certain point but the average person doesn’t understand the science behind why the earth is round or the earth is flat they rely on other people who they’ve placed their trust in so is it so listen you call listen I I so everyone relies everyone relies on other people when I will not say everyone the majority of people that believe things rely on and Trust somebody trusts a level of trust with someone else and it’s and and that’s why you can sit down and if you’re not knowledgeable about a particular subject you can sit down and read a book about 200 proofs or you can sit down and watch a two-hour documentary and if you’re not informed about that particular subject those things can seem very very compelling to you because you’re like well I’ve never thought about it like that and then all of a sudden you find yourself being Tila Tequila and you’re tweeting out how you’re going to be killed because you believe this and now this is a massive conspiracy so my thing is yes okay if you get into the specific science of it yes obviously the science supports the fact that the earth is a sphere the earth is not flat it’s a crazy thing to believe yes but the reason people believe these things is because they’re not informed and they’re susceptible to false information almost everyone is susceptible to false information but the second big reason why somebody like me or you who we’re also trusting the scientist I believe that NASA is telling the truth I have lots of reasons that I believe that to be true but the reason that I don’t buy into a conspiracy theory like this one is because I’m not the kind of person who has a disposition that wants to believe conspiracy theories there are some people who it is in their DNA it is the way that they are wired to find something that’s novel something that’s a little bit different something that goes against the flow and legs on rabbit ate towards it it’s so it’s really it’s a worldview disposition it’s not because there’s good scientific reasons to believe the world is flat no that’s just a secondary thing that you get into once you’ve made the decision that you believe that you’re a conspiracy theorist that’s it’s a disposition it’s a way of seeing the world and wonder that’s my theory so you and you like say DNA see I wonder if it’s if there’s also this much environment to being being lied to if it’s not just this is your chemical makeup or your genetic makeup but there’s also you’ve been burned like I try to think of things have been proven to be hope a hoax and then they come back you know yeah but a lot of people believe that beforehand it’s like oh I’m not making that mistake again I’m not I’m not trusting these well I have an example in a really interesting study that was done okay so I’m not saying that conspiracies don’t exist okay so you know the the NSA surveillance program called prism that Edward Snowden was responsible for exposing right so that was something that the government would have said didn’t exist they weren’t willing to say that it existed but then he an insider came out and exposed it turns out no this was an illegal surveillance program and he thought that the government should be held accountable for it here’s the interesting thing there’s a guy not sure his we can link to this in the it’s doctor grime he is a he’s basically he’s a post doctoral physicist at Oxford and he is there’s a BBC article about him that he’s done the math on how difficult it would be to keep certain conspiracies under wraps just based on probability of how many people are involved in coating with holding this conspiracy up and then how likely it is that the truth gets exposed at some point so for instance with the NSA thing there was about 36,000 people involved in that like 36,000 people individuals who would have known about that had to keep it secret had to keep it secret and it took six years for that to come out basically his thing is is that from a simple mathematical standpoint the more people who are involved in a conspiracy the more difficult it is to continue to perpetuate that conspiracy the moon-landing for instance would have required four hundred and eleven thousand people to be in on that and of course when we get into the flatter thing we’re talking about ultimately millions of people would have had to have been part of this in order to fetch weight this thing in the fact that there’s no one who’s come come out and been like oh listen I work for NASA and I’m a legitimate person who worked for NASA and I’m coming out and I’m people would be saying that it’s a hoax if it was a hoax but that’s just a one interesting little facet of it is that from a mathematical perspective it’s very difficult to believe that these things happen but I think this goes back to this disposition some people are more likely to believe that the moon landing was a was faked than they are to believe that the moon landing which while it’s an incredible thing actually happened but which one is actually more improbable that it was completely staged for reasons that I don’t understand so so that we would the u.s. space program would be bolstered or whatever it takes you have to believe so many crazy things in order to think that that happened whereas to just believe that we actually do have the technology to go up there and land on the moon it’s not that far-fetched which one is more unbelievable that it’s a hoax is more unbelievable not that it actually happened but if you but if you just want to believe that kind of stuff you’re gonna believe it and nothing that I’m going to say or any scientist is going to say is going to make you change your mind because it’s not about the reasons they’re going to find the reasons that they want they’re going to find the lists that support their particular disposition I you know when it comes to Eric Dubay I don’t know the guy uh I’m sorry I haven’t watched it document is he in it he married he narrates some audio it’s like a mashup video but a bunch of different things you know I’m interested in and I bet he’d be an interesting guy to meet yeah probably really smart it’s not that he’s is not a question of intelligence and he’s probably pretty honest too I don’t think he’s he’s lying I mean I wonder what subset of flat-earthers or fill in the blank with any conspiracy would subscribe to it because it is like it it’s in it it’s it’s hormone recreation it’s well that’s why we presented these other options because it’s fun to believe these things it’s not fun to believe that just what you’ve been told by the majority of people you know that’s true is they’re going to believe that no there’s something else you know there’s people in an argument who just like to shake things up they like to play devil’s advocate Aryans contrarians you know they just get a kick out of that but I I would imagine that at the core of any movement there you know there are people who are sincerely all-in and whatever that theory is but then there’s people who gather around it so I’m latching on to this thing next and this thing next I think that that that probably happens but to get to the core yeah those are those are the people I be interested in meeting in a controlled environment where no one knows where anyone really lives right they’re not stupid and they’re not bad people and I don’t think they’re dishonest I just think it’s they have but let’s meet in a neutral location and hang out like you would do with like a Craigslist kind of exchange well let’s meet let’s meet in Antarctica we could pick a spot it goes all the way around the world we just go away from here we’ll hit it right oh we can go to the North Pole right into the aliens um I want to do either one of those I’m open to either option you
