MK 124: We Make Doritos Tamales (and Introduce our New Crew Member!)

this is just a simple chuck roast and we’re going to sear it off what what was this vinegar welcome to the first inaugural mythical kitchen holiday special of especially mythical holiday kitchens i’m your host josh and it is my great pleasure to announce the latest family member of the mythical kitchen family vna austin v welcome what up oh yes iv um welcome to the show i’m out of breath from doing that that’s a problem uh the first thing i like to ask any new member of the team is what is your favorite ice cream topping and who is your favorite member of the mythical kitchen um my favorite ice cream topping is definitely caramel my favorite person i can’t even tell you that the answer is nicole okay yes nickel all right so i know we like to joke around a lot here but we want to take a step back today and realize what is really important about the holiday season and that is sharing food memories with your loved ones in whatever form that may take right now so we are going to be making a traditional dish right with a little bit of mythical kitchen twist yeah you’ve seen the show you’ve seen the show we’re making dorito tamales today we’re gonna actually break it down in three easy steps and you can find them on the time coast to the left that was good that’s better than i do it and you can find the full recipe in the description below also you can check out our the holidays let’s get cooking better okay louder brighter smiles okay let’s get cooking now do it like freaking insane like screaming let’s get cooking i didn’t mean to do that with my hand i’m sorry all righty so we got to make the filling for these tamales we’re going to take this is just a simple chuck roast and we’re going to sear it off what what was this vinegar so what you’re going to do is you want to get a bunch of piping hot vinegar if you smell this whoa um welcome to mythical kitchen we have a new member of the team this is vna austin all right so we have the pan heating up so we’re going to take vegetable oil is the thing that you typically put in a pan to see a meat on now i need you to chop up that onion i trust you chop up the onion in whatever way feels best to you okay all right we’re adding a little bit chili chili powder we got onion we got we got now now we got onion sorry what happened i didn’t take the top part off so we’re gonna add a little bit of garlic powder to there that along with a bunch of sage we’ve got chipotle chili powder paprika and new mexico chili powder so we’re just gonna season up this roaster we’re cooking this hole you know you could cut it into pieces we’re gonna be braising the whole thing and then just shredding it down i like every oh huh why was that i don’t know i like anytime you have aromatics you kind of get the meat cooking first okay pan turned off all right so we got the beef stearin uh take those onions throw it in there yeah yeah toss all of them they’re just nestle them around the beef we’re gonna let this cook for like five hours and then anytime you’re cooking something if you’re really worried about the flavors not developing you can mask it by throwing in a handful of doritos i can’t stress that enough it works with any dish all right so we’re gonna crack up some garlic get it in there so i the preferred method the official mythical kitchen method is the palm heel strike are you familiar with palm heel strike i am not can you please show me you’re just going to go straight with the palm and just ice and then you get a perfectly cracked open piece of garlic nope that didn’t work got to be here drive down i exploded that way oh there we go all right so we got the garlic working with the chuck roast in there now we’re going to batch up some i should finish chewing sorry yeah you should all right so you’re going to take that morning pestle you’re going to mash up the doritos could we just crumble these in there sure and actually adding doritos to this is going to make a certain amount of sense it’s the same way you would add say masa to thicken like a chili corn carne we’re just gonna use doritos and we’re gonna try and get all that flavor and views in there because we’re gonna be infusing the actual masa of the tamales and doritos as well so you grew up like making tamales during holidays right yes it was actually a tradition that my grandmother started but once she passed away my mom kind of took over because she wanted to keep that tradition alive she always did the hard part though she did the masa and the mullet i didn’t do that i was the person who stuffed and then i would have just passed it to my brother and me and my siblings just had a nice assembly line standing line is crucial because if one person just does everything it’s just gonna take too long like a master person you need to meet person you need the folder yes i think we have some people here that can help us out later yes we do so i’m hanging out in the parking lot they’re just random people that walk around oh i think we got a nice sear on this i’m gonna go ahead reach in and flip it okay that’s nice oh that’s beautiful super nice and brown we’re gonna get a lot of flavor off the spices right there just smell that just like get a nice huff beautiful meat facial at eight in the morning the meat facial so we’re just gonna go ahead and cover this add the doritos in there and then we’re going to cover this with foil and then we’re going to sprinkle it on top yeah sprinkle them on top it’s all going to steam together and then this is going to kind of create a sort of like thick braising liquid to go along with that chuck roast then we’re going to pop it in the oven for about five hours in which case you can watch bloodsport with jean-claude van damme at least two and a half times because the first watch you’re watching to like see the action but the second watch you’re watching to dive into the character of chong li oh and then i’ma just beat and foil directly onto the burning hot pan this is gonna pop in the oven oh yeah but now we can start making the masa yes ready oh i hit my hand here’s selling the towels to the people okay is it upside down that was good that was a good sale that was a good silent sales pitch you could cook up your own feast with the mythical kitchen towels audio that i recorded nine months ago when i didn’t know how to talk good ivy go ahead and shred this up this looks beautiful that does look really gorgeous see that liquid thickened so so so much this might have been doing some squats because yeah it doesn’t want to break oh does beer exist in this kitchen you gotta yell no sensei no sensei does pain exists in this kitchen no sense cause defeat exists in this kitchen no sense strike first strike hard no mercy no sensei okay i might need your help you gotta go but i am gonna go fast eat one of these this is that walmart beef that’s okay that’s good it’s you know what it’s it’s muscular it’s yeah it’s nice and muscular you get all that lean protein we got this pretty much shredded you know oh yeah we got to make the masa and then we gotta yeah you just they can’t tell like this just looks like a nest it’s totally fine all right cool so you are much more experienced in this than i am so i’m just gonna be your assistant just tell me okay so we can actually not everybody mounts the larva we can go ahead and do that today make it easy for us we can just pop it in there i don’t okay if it tastes like your hands later i’m gonna be very interested no no that’s the secret sauce that gets into it okay so we got the lard melting so we’re gonna go ahead and just turn uh pass i passed to you okay uh it looks like this switch maybe not is it plugged in nope not even a little bit ah it’s it’s this way where does this one go what do we do plug it in what do you mean it’s all everything’s plugged in oh my gosh but what’s this one there because she was right the whole time i knew that i was testing her vu patch so we’re going to the spicy nacho flavor did your grandma traditionally mix doritos in with her masa when she made tamales no this is definitely the first time i’ve ever done this do you think it’s gonna work though yes i do i don’t know my mom might throw a chocolate at me if she sees this so we’re gonna add the lard first and then the water all right all right just little by little ah sorry go go go there we go just please don’t rub any more lard on your body because no but now it’s nice and warm it’s gonna spread everywhere yeah yeah yeah once it starts running your body becomes like a slip and slide when you drive home you like can’t grip the steering wheel that actually happened to me the other day because we were cooking and i had like some sort of grease in my hands and it kept sliding the steering wheel who gave you a driver’s license i don’t know when i took my initial driver’s license tests when i was 17 there was one guy at our local dmv that was notorious for just passing everybody and i got this guy and so he got in the car and he literally took a nap for 20 minutes and i almost hit a pedestrian coming off of a curb and then i get back and he’s like congrats you got a perfect score you passed here’s a license all right i’m going to say stream i’m going to steady stream doritos in my mouth okay you want doritos yeah i do actually yeah are we adding all this water or are we kind of going by feel going by feel gotcha gotcha gotcha you have a little dorito a little corn i don’t believe that to be true have you ever walked around with a piece of chip on your face for a very long time and nobody told you it’s kind of like a metaphor for my whole life like whether it’s a real dorito chip on my face or like you know a figurative one yes okay this looks like it’s ready yeah should we test it should we do a water trick what’s the water trick my grandma showed me this you actually make like a little tiny ball okay and then you drop it in the water if it floats then it’s ready if it doesn’t then it’s not ready if it floats it’s a witch if it doesn’t then it’s dead yeah pretty much okay cool cool cool it feels dense burn the lynch what do we do we wait no give it like 10 minutes 10 minutes it’s just gonna float after 10 minutes it might be the chips all right so we’re gonna let this masa rest and then we can start folding up our tamales yes we’re gonna make another couple varieties i’m gonna do it off camera same process with the doritos we’re doing a salsa verde and then also a tapatio one yes i’m gonna start doing it okay i’m ready all right we got our assembly line set up and now all we need are assembly line workers random strangers from the parking lot trying to stock rhett and link come on down come in why are you two always holding hands it’s very sweet it is the holiday spirit so we’re gonna take these and v i need you to direct us you gotta make sure you do it on the stop sign right hard side soft side so the soft side to the side with like less prominent ridges on it so now i’m going hands right yes you can do hands it’s a lot easier to spread and kind of make it thinner do i get to be the meat man yes should trevor also use his hands yes he can all right does this look good yes it’s not passing trevor and i’m just gonna keep doing this yes so now trevor’s gonna go ahead and stuff in the middle meat time is that good is that good meat for you yes you feel good about that okay wait a little bit more at the end right there don’t get don’t get skimpy on the meat now yeah that means it’s good so now we’re in the folding process i want to with my fingers don’t lick and then you’re gonna do it flip it one more time press it down if you like it a little bit more squish and then we’re going to fold the bottom okay it’s the most important part it is yes so the bowl in here is to help it lean yeah to the side exactly very cool can you do some other colors too oh yeah yeah sorry sorry sorry what other flavors do we have so we got the tapatio flavor right there love the color on that and then we got salsa verde which is i believe nicole and trevor are that’s your salsa verde people right oh i’m big sausage i think it’s my favorite doritos flavor all right i’m going to make some other flavors we got the tap steel going trevor’s and stuff that with me we’re going to get them all into the steamer and then we we get to fight each other in the parking lot what no i’m not fighting it doesn’t that was my holiday tradition i’m putting my money on trevor yeah me too he’s wiry he’s white he’s white he’s whiter oh yeah tamales don’t see me we got to dig in but first i’ve gotten us all christmas gifts nicole for you oh you could take a red for v the truff extra hot cause i know you’re fancy trevor secret aardvark because you’re my secret aardvark and then i got me this one thanks josh i know i shouldn’t have what’d you get me let’s eat some tamales okay cool look at those beautiful babies okay smells lovely give me your plate yeah yeah also remember we cannot eat until everyone else gets stuck to molly’s okay remember can you unwrap it and look at it uh no not yet here’s your classic dog thank you and who wants salsa verde me maybe okay come come come come hey it feels supple like a baby’s arm okay josh when should we eat now should we first before we eat say what we’re all thankful for yes all right nicole you go okay um i’m really thankful for my lovely uh fiance and i’m also really thankful for my friends i’m also really thankful for my family and i’m thankful that uh i get to do what i love every single day with people i love every single day i’m thankful for um these amazing tamales that we’re about to taste all these beautiful people standing around me my family also my boyfriend he’s awesome and for this truffle hot sauce because i’m gonna put it all over my tamale i’m thankful for the movie goon i’m thankful for all of you and for all of you uh this is our first year of mythical kitchen first year we actually published videos in this and this is like a crazy stupid experiment that people decided to let us do and no one knew what would happen and the response from all the fans has been absolutely incredible like nicole said i mean we get to show up and do what we love every day that is a very special thing that not a lot of people have we get to do it with people that we love as well and that is the greatest thing in the world so thank you all for your support of mythical kitchen and now to celebrate you we’re going to eat tamales that you can’t taste unless you make them for yourselves please do it they’re fun open it up okay wow i want to go right into the middle i want to get all that meat i like to break mine up in little pieces cheers guys cheers yum so it’s like family i feel bad about what i think before because you guys are all being really sappy and cute and i was like i’m gonna be funny and also i didn’t want to take a bunch of time and so then i just said that but i’m thankful for you guys a lot goon is a really good movie though great to be clear to be absolutely nicole did you drop them all yeah everyone dropped tamales in your boobs to make nicole feel feel more appreciated you don’t have to there’s so much space in there i already did it i already did it it’s in there wait guys we don’t have a good photo together we need to take a nice holiday photo as a family okay oh no i dropped something do it no stop dropping tamales in your boobs all right everybody happy and smiling [Music] all right now look hard okay now a silly one
