That was almost as sad as the first 10 minutes of Up. ♪ (dramatic chord) ♪ – (Finebros) So can you break down the story, beginning to end, of this short? – I don’t really want to. – So it was the bird. And it was “building” something. – (solemnly) He was putting trees on the side of the mountain so he could… feel like he could fly. – (mournfully) But his last moments would be that he’s flying. Oh my god. – This bird who couldn’t fly, who was insecure, he wanted a moment where he could feel like he is flying. But you know what comes with falling off a cliff: sudden death. – It was a bird trying to– I still don’t understand what he was trying to do. – (chuckling) I don’t know what just happened, man. – Did I miss something? – At what point are you gonna play the rest of the video for us? – (Finebros) Why did it kill itself? – But I thought… he flew– Did he die? – Oh, his last wish was to fly, and he got to live his dream. – No! So he died? Oh my gosh! No! He lived his dream and then he died? I was so attached to that little kiwi bird. – Some things are worth dying for. The feeling of flight… – Is not worth dying for. – He felt like he couldn’t fulfill what he was made to do. He’s a bird and he can’t fly! That’s really– oh, I found tissues. – He figured, you know, “I can either go on unhappy with what I couldn’t do or go out with this last happy moment.” Aw. So poetic. – (cracking up) I don’t think it was trying to kill itself. I think– I think it was misled. Someone told it that if it jumped off this really tall cliff, it would grow wings and be able to fly. And it– it drank the Kool-Aid. – (Finebros) How does it make you feel? – That’s so– (chokes up) That’s heartwarming, but really it’s sad at the same time. – I’m so sad right now. – I totally cried the first time I watched this video. – I’m starting to well up with tears. I’m very sensitive. – Made me feel a bit sad. You expect it to be fun, and then it just takes a dive literally. – I’m gonna pretend it was happy though. He got to live his dream. – Midway through, I’m like, “Oh, there’s no happy ending for this guy.” But in that moment, I was happy for him. – I feel terrible! I wanted to leave here today feeling lovely! But no. I had to watch a bird who couldn’t fly off himself. – (Finebros) Knowing the kiwi is a flightless bird, what would you say is the message of this video? – Know your limitations. – Die doing the thing you can’t do? I don’t know. – I’m not really sure if this is a good message. – People shouldn’t feel bad if they can’t do something that the other kids do. Like, what kind of moral is that? That if you have some kind of disability, that you should just off yourself? What the [bleep]? – (Finebros) I don’t know. – What do you mean, you don’t know?! – Your dreams are worth dying for. And the minute you can live it, the minute you can be like, “Okay, I’m okay. I’ve done what I needed to do.” – It’s better to live a short happy life than to do something forever that you are not happy with. – Everybody has limitations. Everybody has things that make it seem like their dreams are impossible. But if you’re willing to work really hard and make sacrifices, then anyone’s dream can come true. Living your dreams is a beautiful thing, even if it causes sacrifice. – (Finebros) So this video is actually very old and went viral a long time ago– seven years ago, in 2006… – Oh. Dang. So, like, the beginning. – (Finebros) …even was featured on the old YouTube homepage back then. – Whoa! Whoa! – (Finebros) Back when YouTube had human beings that picked what went to the homepage. – What? There are human beings that work at YouTube? – (Finebros) For a time, it also was known as being the top favorited video of all time in the old Arts and Animation category on YouTube. – Damn, what happened to that? – (Finebros) And (snickers) it won the Most Adorable Video award at the first ever YouTube Video Awards. – (aghast) What? This won an award? – And that is a very deserving award. I smiled through most of it, and then I cried at the end. – It was adorable. Why don’t they do awards? They gotta do more awards. – (Finebros) For people watching that don’t know how YouTube’s homepage and lists used to work, can you explain it? – Right. Yeah, back in the day, in addition to having a YouTube homepage, where it was curated, they also had sections where the most viewed, the top favorited, top commented– those videos would have their own section. And it was a really interesting way to find new videos. And they completely got rid of that for some “algorithm.” (laughs with Finebros) Thanks, YouTube. – You could see what was popular. It really helped, like how many people are actually favoriting a video. – I was all about the lists. The lists were, every couple of days, whatever got the most views and a lot of five stars in a short amount of time, you would end up in one of these top five positions. – Well, that’s why people ask for all those things, right? That’s why you wanted people to comment. – Very cool to finally figure out why people say like, comment– rate five stars. Hello? That’s very interesting. YouTube history. – I always think it was so much better to be a part of the community back then. – (Finebros) Finally, some people find this video to be very dark. Some find it cute. Some find it inspirational. Where do you stand? – Uh… I think it’s a little bit dark. I don’t know if it’s inspirational. – I don’t really see anything inspirational about it. It doesn’t make me want to go out and live my dream. – If you had to make me think about it, I would’ve just been like, “This is a pointless video.” I’d be fat, dumb, and happy right now. – If someone had never seen movies or films or heard good music, then maybe this is so beautiful and inspirational. But I’ve heard good music and seen great films, and this was okay. – I think it’s a mixture of everything. Like, it’s inspirational, it’s cute, and it’s dark. It’s a motivational dark. – It started off so cute. And then when I realized that it died, it was very dark but still inspirational that it got to– I think it’s a good mix of everything. – When I realized that the little bird gave its life to live its dream, like, that’s a pretty inspirational thought. – Found it inspirational and very beautiful. You got to look at it as like a cancer patient’s last wish. And someone makes that dream possible. And you see the tear of joy before he hits the ground. It’s inspiring. – People take things that they see so literally. If you watch Kiwi! and all you see is like, oh, this bird killing himself, like, really? I mean, like, bro. You know, you gotta expand your mind, man. Not everything that’s beautiful and inspirational has to make you happy. Sometimes beautiful things are supposed to disturb you a little bit, make you a little uncomfortable, make you think about stuff. Kiwi. I think that’s one of my first favorited videos too.
