That was really fun. ♪ (dramatic chord) ♪ – (Finebros) So who was that and what song was it? – That was Rebecca Black and that was “Saturday.” – That was Rebecca Black, and that was the incredible masterpiece “Saturday.” – That was me. And that was my song, “Saturday”! – (Finebros) And when you first heard “Friday,” do you remember what you thought? – I remember! – ♪ Friday, Friday ♪ – (giggles) She’s so bad! – She holds it against me a lot! – I thought she was trolling. – I didn’t hate it. I just thought it was so funny. – I was one of the naysayers, and I’m ashamed of that. – I genuinely thought it was one of the worst songs I’d ever heard, which of course was why it became huge and everyone wanted to share it around. I bought it, actually. I probably shouldn’t admit that on camera. – I… was… TERRIFIED for her. I went through something similar. And to see the scale that hers was on, I felt so awful. Because it did go so badly for me, and I was split right down the middle. There was people that loved me and then people that hated me. It seemed like everyone hated this girl. She has since then obviously proven to be a really talented singer. But even if she wasn’t a good singer, that’s absolutely no reason to destroy someone’s life. (clang) – (Finebros) Truth! A lot of people feel that you purposely made it to be this bad song and bad music video. What are your thoughts on the people who think that? – Well, it was honestly something where I didn’t really care what the song was about at 13. I had the opportunity to get my own song, and it was something I’d wanted to do for a long time. And that was that. – (Finebros) And now with “Saturday,” what are your thoughts of the song? – I actually kinda like the song. – I love the song. The song is so danceable. – Altogether it wasn’t as bad. – I love that Dave was in it. – It was cute. It was catchy. You know, I’m rooting for Rebecca Black. – The thing that I like about “Saturday” is that there’s a self-awareness to it now that, okay, I know how you took “Friday,” and I’m rolling with it. – “I get why I’m here. I get why you know me. I’m not ashamed of it.” – It was like the perfect balance of “[bleep] you” and “I’m awesome.” – (Finebros) What were you going for with “Saturday”? – The idea of “Saturday”… It’s the “Friday” video of me acknowledging what the video was and how it did. And this is me moving on and to a new day. I’ve been wanting to do it for a year now. But one, I didn’t have people around me that supported the idea. And one of my big things is making fun of myself. Then I became friends with Dave a year ago. And he wanted to do it so bad. So we just– it worked. – (Finebros) Rebecca has now become a full-fledged YouTuber. – Yes. – (Finebros) She now has over 700,000 subscribers. – Queen! Get it! – (Finebros) What are your thoughts of her turning “Friday” and everything that she went through into this kind of success on YouTube? – I applaud her for rolling with the punches, for understanding how she was received and then embracing that. – That’s what a Rebecca Black fan is. It’s someone who understands how she became popular and understands that dynamic, and is still making a choice to be a fan. – I think she was smart the way she went about it. She had all that leverage from the original. – I feel like there’s a part of you that feels bad for what happened to her and feels bad for how much she got ridiculed. So you kind of want to see, like, “Okay, well, let’s give her another chance.” – When you get that much hate, you’re gonna be sad for a second. And then you’re gonna be like, “Okay, yeah, I messed up.” When you own up to that kinda stuff, you get a bit of respect. – From the start, her intention was nothing but pure and good and honest. Sure, we may have made fun of it at the beginning. But then when she started to make videos, we saw that she was just one of us. – (Finebros) What was it like to open yourself up and embrace this idea of being a YouTuber fully? – Well, it was really scary. Because I know there are a lot of people that say, “Oh, you’re just trying to use the YouTube train to keep yourself relevant.” But I was honestly really surprised to see the amount of people that were fans of it and that really liked it and have continued to watch and the way the channel’s grown since then. – (Finebros) So the Saturday video now has over 19 million views. – Whew! – That’s pretty good. – If you look at the dislike count, there’s a lot. And, I mean, that’s okay. Everyone gets haters. – (Finebros) Still getting a lot of hate. There’s over 100,000 dislikes. – You know. – I’m sure. – You wouldn’t expect anything else. – People are just gonna do that because they thought it was fun to hate on her in “Friday.” – (Finebros) Why do you think there’s still so much notoriety even though it’s been years since “Friday”? – ‘Cause she named it “Saturday.” And people want to see, like, “What are you about to do?” – People are always waiting for the sequel to something successful so they can rip it apart. – It got picked up by a ton of news outlets. That always helps. – It’s kinda like with Boxxy, for example. Boxxy has this huge viral video. Everybody remembers her name. And then she comes back and then people watch the videos again. It’s because they now have such a presence on the internet, if they do something new, people are gonna instantaneously know. – Even from my perspective and angle, I don’t understand it. I don’t understand why people continue to be fascinated by something that was such a long time ago. And there are gonna be people five years from now waiting for “Sunday.” Regardless of whether or not she waits for it, they’re gonna be like, ♪ yesterday was Saturday ♪ (crazed) ♪ And today is Sunday! ♪ Like, they are just gonna be waiting for it. – (Finebros) Do you think she deserves the success and fame that has come from all this? – This is a difficult question, because at first I thought that she didn’t. And then as I got to know her and what she was doing with the world and all these people that didn’t like her and how she treated everything, I was like, “Yeah, she’s got it. She’s got that star quality.” – If she can put up with all these people hating on her as much as they do… People are like, “I want to kill you,” and, “I hate you. You’re the worst singer ever. You’re 13!” And she took it and she made it work. – The world is talking about you. You’re not asking them to. They’re doing it. They’re finding it interesting, whether it’s good or bad. And they’re making you a celebrity. So if they make you a celebrity, I guess you deserve to be a celebrity. – So many people who have a career in entertainment, including us– it wasn’t totally calculated, you know? It’s like, there are circumstances outside of your control that are the reason that you had something that was a hit. Nobody is a completely self-made person. – (Finebros) Finally, what would you want to say to Rebecca, keeping in mind Rebecca will be in this episode of YouTubers React? – (shrilly) OH MY GOD! THAT’S AWESOME! – Oh, wow. Awesome. That is amazing. – Oh jeez. (laughs) Oh, thanks for telling me last second. Keep doing what you’re doing!
