GMM 2077: We Sketch A Live Nude Model

There’s no time to dawdle. We’re about to sketch a nude model. – Let’s talk about that. (upbeat music) Good Mythical Morning. – You’re probably aware of art classes where aspiring artists sketch nude models, I’m talking about totally naked models. Well today, we’re gonna do that, sketch the models, not be the models. – Oh. – We’re going to try nude figure drawing. – That’s a disappointment. – The drawing of the human form in various postures. Is this gonna get weird? – You mean me and you and two naked people just having a good time together. – Yeah, yeah. – Of course it’s not gonna get weird. – Ah, what do you say it’s probably definitely gonna get weird, for us. It’s time for the human body I beautiful, yet likely to flummox. How do I draw the fingers? And what about the buttocks? – Welcome to the nudio studio zone. – Yeah, and we are lucky enough to have local artist and instructor Jennifer McChristian here. Hey, Jennifer. – Hi. (people applaud) – And yes, we got applause. And we have two robed people, Jonny and Amber, who, I’m pretty sure, are gonna be naked a little bit later. – Yes. – Yes, a good assumption. – But not yet, don’t get naked until we’re like totally ready. – We have a countdown or something. – We’re not there yet. – Now Jennifer, in terms of our art experience, I think for me the last time I was in an art class, it was when I took one of my kids to one of those paint pottery things. – Right. – And I was just on my phone the whole time. So I don’t have a lot of experience with this. – [Jennifer] Okay. – I don’t think Link does either. He’s not speaking, I think he’s just hoping that you’ll believe that he’s an artistic man. – No, last thing I remember sketching was in grade school, Mr. Land got us to sketch my pet monster. I think he was naked, but there was so much fur that it was hard to tell. – Totally, totally nude. – If that was like fur accoutrements. – What do we need to do to get into the right mindset? ‘Cause I feel like we’re not good artists. – We just gotta- – I wanna do really well today. – You guys will be fine, just relax and- – You’d think we were getting naked (Jennifer chuckles) with the way that we’re acting about it. Now Jonny and Amber, this is not your first time. – Not at all. – Nope. – So, how experienced are you with being drawn in the nude? – About 10 years. – [Rhett And Link] 10 years! – [Jonny And Amber] Yeah! – Jonny, you only look like 20 years old. – Yeah, I started about when I was 20 years old, I’m 34. – I didn’t mean to ask your age, I just wanted to make sure you weren’t a nude 10-year-old. (Amber and Jennifer laugh) I guess that could happen. – All right, listen, we- – Like a cherub. – We talked about this. You said you weren’t gonna make it awkward. – I did. – Now you’re talking about nude 10-year-olds. – I thought, I was just trying to help Jonny out. – Amber, what- – You helped no one. – How many years you got under your not wearing a belt? – Six, six years. – [Rhett] Six. – [Rhett And Link] Okay. – [Rhett] All right, that makes me feel better. – I just modeled a couple hours ago. – Wow, okay. – [Amber] It’s pretty frequent. – Frequent and fresh. – Yeah. – I think that makes me feel comfortable. – Mm-hmm. – Okay. – It makes me feel like we’re gonna be compared to a lot of other pee artists. – Pee artists. – Pee. – Pee-pee artists. – Just be quiet for a second. (laughs) Okay, in order to manage your expectations, we wanna be up front and let you know that our final sketches are gonna have the sensitive bits and pieces censored out, because according to YouTube, the human body is a shameful thing that must be concealed at all costs! No, that’s not true. This is just something that everybody can enjoy, so we just wanted to let you know about that. But you’ll be able to get the gist of what we have drawn. – Okay, we need to determine who’s gonna be sketching who. Stevie is gonna ask us a trivia question, whoever gets this right gets the power of choice. – Okay, Stevie, what’s our question? – [Stevie] The Mona Lisa is one of the most renowned portraits in history, which is probably why it was once stolen. In what year was the Mona Lisa stolen from the Louvre? – Oh, what year was it stolen, not what year was it painted. – Do you know the answer – I’ll give you a – to this? – Three, two, one when you’re ready. – Nope. – Good, very good. (Jennifer laughs) All right, I’m ready. – [Stevie] Three, two, one. – [Rhett] 1835. – [Link] 1943. – 1943, 1835. – Yeah, yeah. – [Stevie] The answer is 1911, which means Link is closer. – Link, I’m glad that you have to make this decision. – I know, I was like, I kinda didn’t wanna be closer. – I’m so glad I was wrong. – I should’ve said 400 A.D. – Yeah, yeah. (everyone laughs) – Okay, well this is, how do I do this? How do I even choose? Because, I don’t wanna choose Amber and be like, oh, I wanna sketch a naked woman. – Okay, you know, this could be a thought process. – So, oh, just in my head? – Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, I know you’re a verbal processor, but this could be – Well women are a lot easier – a thought process. – to draw than men are. – Women are easier to draw than men? – I think so, yeah. – Okay, all right, I’ll go with Amber, because I need a leg up. Um, well, I guess you could put a leg up. – I can literally do that. – We’ll talk about that later. And Jonny, you’re gonna have to go with Rhett, but no offense, I’d love to draw you next time. (people laughing) – We can do it. – Yeah, yeah. – ‘Cause this will, I’m sure this will be a regular segment. – Can we just start drawing? – Please. (paper and pen whooshing) – Well, we’re over here behind these. – And you’re over there. – They’re out there still in robes. When the nakedness happens in just a second, Jennifer, what should we do with our face? – Your jaw should drop. – Well, I don’t recommend that. – I’ll probably just put it here. – No drooling. – You might wanna hold your jaw, Link. – Should I avert my eyes? – Um… – I’m gonna definitely be looking at a 45-degree angle. – I would say just kind of scan the whole body – And then when I… – all at once to get a gist of the figure. But don’t like focus on one area too much. – So don’t lock on any particular area. – Yeah, I don’t recommend focusing on one area too long. – Amber and Jonny, permission to scan the bodies, but not, not really camp out anywhere. – No camping. – [Jennifer] Right. – Permission granted. – Now, just so we’re prepared, will you be making eye contact with us? – Absolutely not! – Okay, okay, absolutely not. – Okay, good, Jonny’s like don’t even think about it. That makes me feel better, ’cause I thought we we’re gonna be just like looking at each other, you know. (people laughing) Okay, if you need a count, whatever you normally do, just we’re just gonna kinda hand it over to you. – Okay. – Okay. (Amber giggles) – And then. – They are naked. – Starting on the lights and then just doing a little scan. – Right, yeah, they’re, you know, human bodies. – We’re all humans here. – Yeah. – They’ve done this a lot. – Uh-huh, yeah, so, I haven’t. – Still find myself looking way up, way down, but okay. – We’re just growing comfortable with it. – [Link] Okay. – I mean, listen, this has happened for thousands of years. – It looks like he’s talking to you, but he’s really talking to himself and me. – (chuckles) Yeah, you can move your jaw away from the top of the easel. – Okay, yeah, stay up. (Amber laughs) All right. – [Rhett] Jennifer, we are ready for instruction. – Okay, are you ready? – Okay, so what part do we draw first? – Okay, so kind of wanna start with just the head. – Now, you guys have adopted some poses here. Jonny, you’re kind of doing the tricep stretch. – It’s contrapposta, we’re on one leg, and that makes difference with the arms, difference with the direction of the hips and the shoulders. – That’s my favorite pasta. (people laughing) – And then Amber’s covering up a little secret on the left shoulder there. (Rhett laughs) – I’m starting with the hair. – [Jennifer] You can start, go ahead. – I don’t know, look at, can you tell that’s hair. – Don’t worry about the hair right now. – What? But that’s all I’ve drawn! – So you just wanna get the basic shapes and stuff. – [Link] Like a… – Yeah, a circular motion, and then you kind of want a line where the line of the neck is, and I kind of draw a rough line of the angle of the shoulder. – [Link] Kind of like that. – And the area where she’s – They have one of these. – bent, like the curve here, yeah. – She’s really giving me that curve, so I can go with that. – Right. So that’ll create the balance and the overall. – Amber, how did you get into this? Like, how does start? – I had an artist friend who asked me to pose for him. I liked that it’s not just an artist drawing me, it’s me like kind of inspiring the artist, so it’s very like symbiotic. And then he asked me to pose again. And then the rest is history. – So you immediately took to it. – I loved it. – [Link] It wasn’t overcoming, sort of fear – And I’m not a very, no. – Jonny, what about you, how’d you get into this? – I started in fashion photography. And one of the photographers I knew ran a fashion drawing class at Otis College. And so I started doing fashion for up-and-coming fashion designers. They would draw me in the clothes that they would design later on. – And the clothes just got smaller and smaller and smaller. (people laughing) And the next thing you know, you’re naked. That’s how it happened? – Yeah, also ran a nude figure drawing class, and then I started working for that. It was very comfortable when I first started. – Oh, I got a whole foot down here. – [Jennifer] Yeah. – Oh, the toes got cut off. – [Jennifer] You did good. – So, now I wanna kind of go in and start reinforcing things. – Ah, yes. – Now when he says something like I need to reinforce things, are you taking that personally? – I don’t know, I don’t know what he’s reinforcing. – You know what. – That’s a good question. – I’ve got an impression of you right now. There’s just, there’s one part that I haven’t even tried to draw yet. – I can guess. – [Rhett] Yes. – I’ve drawn a booba-booba-loobie. – That’s pretty good, Link. – I pretty much got a whole thing here. – But I mean, the female form is easier to draw. – [Jennifer] That’s true, that’s true. – It has to be established. – Let me get this, this other leg looks like it’s really coming, it’s weird. – Yeah, it’s a little bit far off to the right, so you- – It’s like the leg’s coming out of the butt. – You wanna bring it in a little bit more towards this way. – That’s right, Jennifer. – [Jennifer] Yes. – I think I’m doing good things over here, Jonny. – What’s the weirdest request that you guys have ever had. I mean, is it like strange poses? – There’s this old man, he would always write a poem about you underneath the drawing he would do. – Do you remember your poem? – I don’t remember. – Jonny. – Apparently Rhett remembers it, go for it. – Jonny got started in fashion. And then getting naked became his passion. – Oh, hey, that’s nice. (everyone laughs) – That sounded like a courtesy, oh. – Oh. – Interesting, you can rhyme. – Okay, any advice for like drawing the nipple? Because, never done that. – Okay, this is really nice line in here. – Yeah, that breast is just, it’s just one little swoop. It’s like a bird just flew down and then went back up. – Beautiful. As far as the nipple, just keep it subtle. You got it. – What do you typically think about while people are drawing you? – I would just basically say anything you think about whenever you’re daydreaming. – [Link] And then there’s- – [Jennifer] A little bit like a flower. – What are you thinking about right now? – Thinking about what I’m gonna do later today, organizing plans. – So if you’re thinking about other things, like what do you guys get out of this? Money? – Basically. (laughs) – [Link] Okay, you get paid. – Yes. – That’s a good start. – And also free education. – What are you learning today? – We’ll get back to you on that. (everyone laughs) – [Rhett] That’s gonna take some time to process. – So Rhett, I can’t help but to notice that there’s no- – Penis. – Private parts, no twig, no berries yet. – Well, I wanna, Jonny, I just wanted to ask you a couple of questions before we get to this part. – So, I definitely, I wanna do you justice, you know. I just wanna make sure I get all the proportions right. I do wanna ask a question, though. What happens, just as a male model, if you know, maybe during a session like this, you start thinking about something, you get a little excited, a little aroused, you know, sometimes your antenna’s up, you know. Um, has it every happened, and what do you do? – Yeah, it’s happened before. – Whoa, it really has! – Tell us about it. (Rhett laughs) – Sometimes, especially in the morning, your hormones are still flowing. – It’s the good morning. (laughs) – But all I really do is just think about pain. – Think about pain? – [Link] Pain. – Yeah, or rather make myself more aware to the pain I’m actually feeling. – Well, I had a guy tell me one time, if you ever get an unwanted erection, think about Richard Nixon. – Yeah, that’s definitely gonna get the job done. – Okay, all right, so, I’m going for it here. – Now Amber, I like how your gaze is kind of downcast. And when I look at what I drew to try to capture that, and it’s like, okay, I’ve drawn a different person than Amber. (people laughing) It’s like I don’t know what happened. Her eyes are too close together. – [Jennifer] Nice. – I don’t know what’s happened. – Very nice. – You like that? – [Jennifer] Yeah, perfect proportions. – She likes it, Jonny. – [Jennifer] Oh yeah, it’s very accurate. – Oh, you did it. – [Jennifer] He did, he did. – [Link] There it is. – [Jennifer] Yeah, there it is. – [Rhett] There it is, just a-hanging. – I think you might need to give your model a little bit more credit. I think you haven’t done complete justice. – This? – Yeah. – I think it looks, I mean, I think most men can only hope for that. We’ll see. – Do you typically get to see what everybody’s done with yourselves? – Yeah. – Yeah. – I used to have a collection. – You have a collection. People gift you drawings of yourself. – Mostly I take photos on my phone, but yeah, I do have a couple original pieces. – What about if they’re really bad, what do you do? – That’s a drawing. – Just say, it’s good for a beginner. – Do they always show it to you or do some people like, “I’m not gonna, “I’d rather you not see it.” – I mean, some people don’t want to show me, I’m not gonna persist. I just go, “Okay, I understand.” And then you talk about something else. – I’m going light, I gotta now, I gotta be more emphatic now. I gotta go darker. – Maybe you can start doing the shading a little bit. Start putting some form. What do you mean shading? – [Jennifer] Like just the shadows and stuff. – Oh, okay. – Yeah. – Have you guys ever accidentally sneezed and a little bit of pee come out? (people laughing) – I haven’t, but it sounds like you have. (chuckles) (Jonny laughs) – [Link] All right, let’s talk shade. – I like to use vine charcoal, you can snap it in half, and then you just use the side like that to shade. – Cool, yeah. – You can use your finger to blend. And the eraser picks up the charcoal, so you can do highlights with that. Once you get all the drawing in, then you can start putting in the shadows. You got shadow here behind her neck and underneath her boob. But don’t be too forceful, just very light touch. – I feel like this is the point where I can really mess it up. – Yeah, just have fun with it. Oh yeah. – Or have a lot of fun. – Yeah, just have fun with it. – Yeah, yeah, it’s not a competition. – Jonny, you’ve done a good job of manscaping, and I wanna accurately capture that, you know. Your parents know you do this? – Mine do, yeah. – Me too. – Do they have a picture of you in their homes? – I gave my mother a portrait. – So you’re not planning on inviting her to a class. – No, no, that’d be really awkward. (people laughing) – Back over those eyebrows. – Try not to focus too much on the details. Go in and start putting in the shadows. See the big shadow shape in here. – [Link] Well, that shoulder is like superhero. – [Jennifer] Yeah, it’s like a football shoulder. – That’s not gonna work. – [Jennifer] Football player shoulder. – I gotta redo that. If these were digital, I could really be hitting the undo button. Rhett, you’re concentrating over there, too, man, is this getting real for you? – Yeah, very. Would it be weird if I like added a sun? – A what? – I usually do a sun in the corner. – Like a, like a sun, like? (person laughing) – Yeah, yeah. – Ah, sure, if you feel that a little insecure. – I rarely do a drawing that doesn’t have, I mean, I’m just gonna be honest with you, – Yeah, go for it. – it’s kind of my signature. Do you have any yellow? – We’re not using color. – Okay. – Yeah. – Then this is gonna be a black hole sun. – [Jennifer] There you go. – And then, of course, now that her arm is in front of her booty, I have to remove that line, but I’m still getting that area. Has it been this weird in other instances, or does this take the cake? – I went to model at a studio, and I disrobed and looked up and one of my yoga students was there. – Yeah, so you know somebody from real life. – Yeah, that was really uncomfortable. – How did you approach it? You’re like, get out! – No. (everyone laughing) We had our break, I just went up to her and I was like, “Hi.” And she’s like, “Oh, oh my gosh, you.” ‘Cause she doesn’t know me derobed, so. – I just smooshed her entire nose while she was talking. I don’t know I just smooshed it. – I was gonna show you like – Now I gotta go over. – you can use the edge of your charcoal to kind of shade in, you know, you can- – See, it takes guts, ’cause what you’re doing, you look like you’re totally screwing up my drawing. – I’m sorry. – But (Jennifer laughs) now that I see. – [Jennifer] I don’t wanna, there. – You’re actually, well you just erased her nipple. – [Jennifer] Well, you just- – I’ve drawn that nipple three times. (everyone laughs) And then you were just like smudging it off. – Yeah. And then you can use your eraser to do highlights and stuff. But you can go back and do the nipple again, if you like. – Okay, oh yeah, ’cause I see, now there’s… – Oh wow, yeah. – So as you can see. – Very experimental. – Jonny is in a black hole sun setting. He’s in front of mountains. He’s behind bushes and there’s a cloud. – [Jennifer] Mm-hmm, yeah. – You know, when you’re good, and you’re quick, you move beyond the subject, you give them settings, so that you know how to feel about them. And I feel that Jonny is, he’s a man of the outdoors. – [Jennifer] It’s definitely. – Yeah. – Yeah, yeah. – He’s like, “Where are my keys?” – [Jennifer] Are those? – I mean, I don’t know why that’s the face that I made you make, but… – [Jennifer] Are those wings or mountains? – Those are mountains. – [Jennifer] Oh, okay. – That was kind of an insult, Jennifer. – [Jennifer] I’m sorry, I. (everyone laughs) – Also, I don’t wanna take too many liberties, but I just feel like when you said that. – All right, guys, so our time is up, guys. (bell chimes) And we are done. Make sure you add in your finishing touches. – I’m finishing, and I have to sign it. – Wow, okay, that was a nice touch, Link. – All right, well, that was the last of them being naked. Look at them, getting robed up quick. – Yeah. – You’re all ready to get out of here, aren’t you? Or do you wanna see what we’ve done? – Yeah, I’m curious. – Yes, please. (pen and paper whooshes) – Okay, our masterpieces are complete. Now let’s get judged by an expert. – And we also want to let you know and see – Yeah, we wanna reveal. – yourselves in a totally fresh new way. – Link, you wanna go first? – No, I will say that for you watching, we’re going to censor the bits. But if you’re into seeing uncensored bits, you can go to the YouTube sketch channel. It’s called Mythical Bits, subscribe. – Yeah. – Uncensored bits. – Uncensored bits all over the place. – Okay, here we go. – Mm, oh wow! You actually did a really nice job. – [Link] Is that right? – [Amber] I think so. (everyone laughs) – Yeah, yeah. – You seem surprised. – Um, I was expecting like the Cyborg of some sort. (everyone laughs) – Yeah, it could’ve gone lots of directions. – What do you think about that banner across the top? – I mean, it says it like it is. – Yeah. – [Amber] Your first nude. – Do you want it? (people laughing) – Ah, sure. (everyone laughing) – You can say no. – I don’t know if that’s how it works, Link. – Okay. – Jennifer, what do you think? – [Jennifer] Um, I think you did a great job. The shading is really nice. – You look surprised, too. – [Jennifer] The proportions are really nice, you captured her long neck. – You’ve got a huge left big toe. I didn’t know if you knew that. – [Jennifer] No. – And it’s not me, it’s you, okay. Let’s see Rhett’s. – [Jennifer] Okay, let’s see Rhett’s. – Okay, here we go, Jonny. – [Amber] Oh. – Nice. (Link laughing) – I like it. I like how I have a halo. – Well, there’s a couple of things to note here by yourself. That’s a sun. That’s a cloud. Those are the mountains. This is his field, and these are bushes. And as you can see, you’re an angel, man. – [Jennifer] Yeah. – I could see how she could mistake the mountains for wings, though. – That’s what I was thinking. It’s like they double as angel wings. – Listen, with a halo, yeah- – Like a cherub. – I just go on instinct. You know, I just, I’m not thinking, it’s just like wings, mountains, I don’t know. I mean, I’m just, I’m channeling the muses. – What’s the area above the wiener called? – The pubis. – [Link] Yeah, good job on the pubis. – [Rhett] You jealous of the pubis? – A little bit. – Okay, Jennifer, what about you, as a professional? – Oh, let’s see. Great proportions. The contour’s very nice. – If you had to put a price on these two sketches, which one would be more? – I think they’re both priceless or beautiful. (everyone laughs) – Okay, she’s gonna take the easy way out. – But if I had to put a price on them, they’re both unique in their own sense. (person laughs) So I would say probably 100,000 on this one. – Whoa, $100,000. – Maybe 150,000 on this. – What! (everyone laughs) – Translation, $1, $3. (everyone laughs) – Okay, all right, Link, I’m not sure how, but you took it, you took it. – Do I get a sticker? – Yes. – [Link] I do? – Yes, you get a sold sticker. This one has been sold, there you go. – Thanks for not putting it on the actual work, because then it would’ve, zero dollars. – Congratulations, Link, and thank you to Jennifer and Jonny and Amber for being here and potentially being present for one of the most awkward, but you know what, one of the most beautiful and fulfilling episodes of Good Mythical Morning ever. – Yeah, I think that I’ve learned to just embrace the human form. – And not be so freaking weird about it, because we’ve all got it. – Let’s draw each other. – Let’s flaunt it. – There you go. – Let’s flaunt it. – At least draw each other more often. – Thanks for subscribing and clicking that bell. – You guys say, “You know what time it is.” (electronic beep) You guys say, “You know what time it is.” – [Jennifer And Amber] You know what time it is. – Yeah. – Hey, it’s Gunner. I’m out here in Iowa Falls, Iowa. I’m on the famous swinging bridge. I’m working on the Mythical coloring book. And it’s time to spin the wheel of Mythicality. – What’s up, Gunner? – Keep it swinging. – Coloring on a bridge in Iowa. I like your style, Gunner. Click the top link to watch this debate, which activities are better naked in Good Mythical More. – And to find out where the wheel of Mythicality’s going. – [Rhett] Looking for more Mythical, but short on time?
