[Rhett] Can coffee bean take away Starbucks’s crown? – [Link] Let’s talk about that. (upbeat music) – [Link] “Good Mythical Morning.” – [Rhett] Starbucks and Coffee Bean have so much more to offer these days than drinks. They’re practically little restaurants. – [Link] Yeah, little tiny restaurants with a lot of coffee on their menus. – [Rhett] It’s strange really, such a little teeny-tiny restaurant with so many different coffees. – [Link] Yeah, such a teeny-tiny, incy-wincy little restaurant. – [Rhett] Oh, itty-bitty. – [Link] With so many coffees. – [Rhett] Yes. – [Link] Why can you be such a itty-bitty, teeny-weeny, tiny, incy, – [Rhett] Oh, it’s so little. – [Link] Tancy, restaurant with so many coffee? – [Rhett] It blows mind my. – [Link] It’s weird, but which restaurant is the real creme de la creme? It’s time for food feuds, Starbucks versus Coffee Bean. – [Rhett] Okay, so usually when we do one of these food feud episodes we bring up the beef, the Twitter beef, the online beef that these places have with one another. – [Link] Throwing she-hate at each other. – [Rhett] But you know what? Apparently coffee places are way above this. They’re like, “Uh-uh, we don’t play that game.” – [Link] Highfalutin – [Rhett] We tried to instigate a beef. We Tweeted Coffee Bean, “Hey, thecoffeebean, “we heard that Starbucks said your drinks are just glorified milkshakes that were left in the sun for a while. Care to respond? – [Link] Whoa, that was sure to get a response, right? – [Rhett] They did not. And we also tried to go the other way, “Hey, Starbucks, thecoffeebean says “they know how to spell people’s names correctly “over here, boom roasted.” – [Link] And there was even the roasted great- – [Rhett] The roasted pun. Which is yes, right? – [Rhett] Yes, right, because of the Coffee Beans are roasted. – [Link] Okay, it even got 39 retweets. (both laughing) – [Rhett] Even still, we couldn’t start a beef but you know what? It exists in people’s minds. They’re thinking about it over there at thecoffeebean, especially (chuckles) they’re thinking about Starbucks. Maybe Starbucks isn’t thinking as much about thecoffeebean, but is that uncalled for? Should they be thinking about them? – [Link] Maybe they should, it’s on our minds. So we’re gonna taste and compare popular food. And of course, drink items from both menus. And we’re gonna each rate them on a scale of 1 to 10. – [Rhett] The coffee spot with the most points will be crowned the caffeinated champ, and win a chance to sponsor a future episode of “Good Mythical Morning,” that’s this show. – [Link] After we tweeted that crap at you now we want you to sponsor us. – [Rhett] Yeah, please. (upbeat music) – [Link] Let’s start off with some coffee. – [Rhett] Yeah, please. – Hey there. – [Link] Hey, hey, – It’s me Starbucks Stewart, – [Rhett] Thanks Steward. and I love this corporation. – [Link] You do, you’re all in? – Oh, it’s the best corporation ’cause we make the best coffee. This coffee is the Pike Place medium-roast for 2.45. – [Rhett] I’ve heard of this. I’ve heard of it. – It’s got a little hint of chocolate. – [Link] Does it? – Cinnamon, and nuts. – [Link] Without actually having any of those things in it. – [Rhett] Right, just- – No, a hint! – [Link] Okay man, all right cool. – Just a little taste! – [Link] All right dude, okay thank you. – Hi! – Urgh! – It’s me, Jennifer, I work for Coffee Bean now. – [Rhett] Oh wow. – [Link] Great. – And this is our Coffee Bean medium-roast in size small for 2.35. I don’t know what’s in it, but I’ve had four of them this morning and I feel alive. – Link Yeah, you do, great. – [Rhett] Stewart and Jennifer don’t really have upward mobility, they have lateral mobility. They’re constantly moving to the same position at a different corporation. – [Link] Yes. – [Rhett] Now, we’ve all had this, right? – [Link] Who is she? – [Rhett] She’s the queen of Starbucks. – [Link] And how many Starbucks are there, Rhett, do you know this? – [Rhett] There’s over 33,000 Starbucks in the world and there’s only 1000+ is what they say on the Coffee Bean website. And we actually just found out, there’s only 114 Coffee Beans in the United States. Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf is what they call it. Which means that many of you may not even know what we’re talking about when we say Coffee Bean, but you, of course, know Starbucks. But there’s a lot here in the Los Angeles area. – [Link] Yeah, I go to the coffee Bean. – [Rhett] People think that Starbucks coffee tastes burnt, and I kinda understand that. But I’ve always kinda liked the taste, am I alone? – [Link] Yeah, at least you can count on it being strong. Here, try the Coffee Bean, let’s see how it rates. I would describe Starbucks as a little burnt, and I would describe the Coffee Bean as a little cardboardy. I feel like I’m tasting a little bit of the cup. – [Rhett] I gotta say for me, there’s not a whole lot of… There’s definitely a difference in taste, but in how much I’m liking it, it’s kinda like, yeah, I mean, I’m drinking coffee. And I’m not excited about it, and I’m not gonna tell people about it. But I feel like it’s getting the job done, and it’s not too bitter. – [Link] I’m gonna rate the Starbucks over here, I’m gonna give it an eight. – [Rhett] I’m gonna give it a seven. (bell pinging) But I’m also gonna give the Coffee Bean a seven because I thought that they were different but equal. – [Link] I’m liking the Coffee Bean a little bit more. – [Rhett] Oh my goodness, did you hear that? – [Link] You know what, I’m not. (crew laughing) I drank it again, and the more you drink, you wanna get that punch. So I’m gonna go down a notch to seven. – [Rhett] Oh my, wow. (bell pinging) – [Link] I thought I liked them more but I don’t. – [Rhett] You know what? This is called flexibility in thinking. (upbeat music) – Good morning, it’s breakfast time. – [Link] Hello. – And this is Coffee Beans, bacon, egg, and cheese English muffin for $5 and 50 cents. And if you love Coffee Bean coffee as much as I do, then you’re gonna love this. – [Link] All right, all right. Pace yourself. – It’s very enthusiastic. – Nobody loves Coffee Bean coffee as much as she does. Hi, so this is the double smoked bacon. – [Rhett] Oh, buddy. – Cheddar and egg sandwich for 5.75, that’s double smoked bacon. You know what that means? – [Rhett] Yeah, double smoked. They smoked it twice. – Yeah. (crew laughing) – [Link] Is that a croissant? What is this? – [Rhett] This is what my kids get, if you take them to Starbucks. Could I get a double smoked, dad? I’m spoiled. (crew laughing) – [Link] Who’s fault is that? – [Rhett] Yeah, mine. Me my wife’s, more my wife’s. I like it though, it always hits the spot for me. – [Link] I’ve recently had the sausage, egg, and cheese which I think comes on a McMuffin. Not a McMuffin, that’s McDonald’s but you know what I’m saying. An egg, what is that thing called? – [Rhett] An English muffin. – [Link] An English muffin. Hey, it burnt the roof of my mouth, haven’t been the same for a week and a half. – [Rhett] Now, you said, was this a croissant? I don’t even know what it is. I think it’s kinda like her croissant, but it’s like its own little pastry creation. It’s got croissant and sort of just bread-like qualities. – [Link] I really think Starbucks does a great job with all of their breakfast. You can count on getting something good. – [Rhett] This looks like something you’d pick up at Mickey D’s, and I haven’t had. – [Link] Yeah. – [Rhett] I’ve never had it. – [Link] The English muffin is much more dense, there’s so much more to it, kinda dominates the experience. – [Rhett] It’s just a solid sandwich, but. – [Link] I mean, they’re very similar. – [Rhett] That’s a solid sandwich, that’s an eight over here on the Starbucks side for me. – [Link] I agree, I’d give that an eight. (bell pinging) It’s pretty impressive, I think they’re all pre-made. I don’t think they’re making ’em in the back. Over here, this is just not as good. Again, it’s not horrible. Without having that next to it, I’d be happy. I’m giving it a six. – [Rhett] You know what? I’m not gonna hold the English muffinness against it ’cause I prefer this kind of bread versus the English muffin. So I’m not gonna go all the way to a six but I’m gonna say a seven. So not quite as good, (bell pinging) so a seven for the Coffee Bean sandwich. (upbeat music) All right, today is the last day to sign up for 3rd Degree Annual Plan over at the Mythical Society to receive your choice of one of the past 2021 quarterly items while supplies last. So go over there, and you can also be randomly selected for a meet and greet with us. – [Link] Oh, you wanna meet and greet us virtually? – [Rhett] Mythicalsociety.com for deep tails. All right, moving on to some tea, some tea lattes. – This is Starbucks grande iced chai latte for 4.75. It’s infused with pepper, cardamom, and ginger. Yeah, it’s like the jazz of chai iced teas. – [Link] Okay, all right. – [Rhett] Yeah, right. – You guys like jazz? – [Rhett] Improvisation. Yeah, I love improvisation. – Did someone say jazz? – Urgh, why? – I love jazz. – I’m jazzed to show you the Coffee Bean small iced chai latte for 4.75. It’s got cloves, and cinnamon in there, and I dumped one into some coffee and chugged it. Now, I could see into my own eyes. – [Link] Oh wow. – [Rhett] Whoa, Jennifer is- – [Link] Same price for these iced cha lattes. – [Rhett] There’s two things that I think are notable here. Obviously, Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf has tea leaf in the name, so it sets a little bit of an expectation. But also they say on their website that their chai tea is always fresh brewed, never from concentrate. While Starbucks is from a chai tea concentrate, my friend, they’re not brewing it! – [Link] Okay, we need not hold that against them. – [Rhett] No, we’re just tasting it. – [Link] Wow, pepper, ginger, cardamom. – [Rhett] All that, it’s like jazz. Would you ever order this? – [Link] No, but now I’m thinking I should order this. – [Rhett] I have ordered this. – [Link] This is good. – [Rhett] I usually get it hot. But I ask for it without the sweetener, without the sugar syrup. Unless I wanna be a bad boy. – [Link] Yeah, I feel like I’m being a bad boy. (Rhett laughing) All right, this one’s got a straw. – [Rhett] My wife hates it when I do that, whenever I enjoy something like that I say, “I’m being a bad boy.” She’d say “This is an unhealthy relationship, with food, Rhett. – [Link] Well, that’s a good point. – [Rhett] She’s probably right, but it’s funny to say I’m being a little bad boy. – [Link] All right chai tea not from concentrate. (crew laughing) Yeah, it doesn’t have that peppery, cardamommy. – [Rhett] It’s not as strong. – [Link] It’s not as strong. – [Rhett] It’s just not as strong, the concentrate is so concentrated. – [Link] It’s also not quite as sweet. I’m being told there’s 42 grams of sugar in the Starbucks version. – [Rhett] Ooh, and there’s only 32 grams of sugar in the Coffee Bean, and listen, ’cause sometimes I like to be a little bad boy. – [Link] I’m being told. – [Rhett] If I was drinking this, I’d be like, “It’s cool man, it’s cool, yeah, yeah. – [Link] Why? – [Rhett] It’s chai latte. But all of a sudden I have this, and I’m like- – [Link] It packs a punch. – [Rhett] And I’m not liking it because of the sweetness. I’m liking it because of the specific flavor of the chai. – [Link] Yeah, I mean, it’s the same experience I had with the coffee and round one. Once, you’ve had a few sips and you start to acclimate to it- – [Rhett] This is better. – [Link] Having that more punchiness that Starbucks is giving you on both of these drinks, I’m gonna give this an eight. – [Rhett] I’m giving it a nine, I’m giving this chai latte a nine. – [Link] Do it, man. Over here to contrast with my eight, I gotta give the Tea Leaf a five. – [Rhett] Whoa, that’s such a low score. – [Link] Just because it’s dramatically different. – [Rhett] I mean, like I said, I’m not, not enjoying this. I’m just not enjoying as much as this. So I’m giving this a seven, so (bell pinging) not all the way down, but a seven, a solid seven. – [Link] I know, I know what you did. (upbeat music) We’re onto some desert. – Hi. – [Rhett] Whoa, that thing’s big. – This is Coffee Beans chocolate croissant for 3.25. It’s hot in here, isn’t it? – [Link] Is it we don’t know. – Or is it just me. (Steward laughing) This is the correctly pronounced Starbucks chocolate croissant for 3.25 So I’ve been to Paris, so. – [Link] Okay. (crew laughing) – You ever there? – [Link] Looking down your nose at us. – [Rhett] Stewart is a heck of a guy. Now, I’ve had this quite a bit, that’s a much bigger croissant. – [Link] I mean, look at the difference here. – [Rhett] Now, there is also a structural difference besides the size. The Starbucks says that it is wrapped around two chocolate batons. – [Link] Yeah, I see two chocolate batons. – [Rhett] While the Coffee Bean is a rich chocolate filling. By the way. – [Link] Yeah, I see two chocolate batons though. – [Rhett] Well, interestingly two chocolate batons is my wife’s favorite porn. (crew laughing) – [Link] Oh, that’s not tasteful. How am I gonna eat this? – [Rhett] You’re such a bad boy. (crew laughing) – [Link] I’m staying out of it, it’s between. – [Rhett] What’s your wife’s favorite porn? – [Link] It’s between you, your wife, and the internet. (crew laughing) – I’m about to munch on this chocolate baton. There’s some flakiness. – [Rhett] But there’s no crispiness. – [Link] No crispiness. It’s good though, it’s good. – [Rhett] It tastes good, but it doesn’t taste like a croissant. – [Link] This one is so huge. – [Rhett] Oh man, look at that. – [Link] I kinda like a little bit more chocolate. – [Rhett] I’m a croissant lover Dingling, ringing, ding dingling, Coffee Bean. Y’all showed up all of a sudden. – [Link] It’s flaky, it’s airy, it’s freaking huge. And you know what? You really don’t need that much chocolate because it comes through so aggressive. – [Rhett] I mean, that is a croissant. That’s what you expect out of a croissant. I think there might be a totally different approach. This feels like it might be baked in store, I don’t know how they do it. But this is obviously just warmed up. Whether it is or not, it comes across as something made. You might get this at just like, an independently owned coffee shop that had some pastries brought in by like the person’s grandmother. This isn’t bad, but it’s not this. Starbucks, if you gotta call that a croissant, you gotta make it more of a croissant. I’m giving this a five. – [Link] I was thinking five too, so that’s what I’m gonna say. I’ll give it a five. (bell pinging) Over here, I’ll let the winds of your sailing bring you all the way over to a high score first. – [Rhett] Can it get a 10? (Link laughing) I’m not gonna give it a 10, I’m gonna give it a nine. I’m not saying it’s a perfect croissant, but it’s pretty close to perfect, it’s a nine. – [Link] I’m gonna give it an eight ’cause your joke kinda left a bad taste in my mouth. – (chuckles) Oh, come on. I was just being a bad boy. – [Link] I’m just gonna give it an eight. – [Rhett] I’m just a bad boy sometimes. (upbeat music) Moving onto some frozen drink. – [Link] Yes. – Here is the Starbucks Grande white chocolate mocha frappuccino for 4.95. Yeah, it’s Nora Jones’s favorite drink. – [Link] Is it? – You guys like jazz? – [Rhett] Yeah, she’s is very smooth. – Jazz, urgh. – Hello, it’s time to go! (Jenifer laughs) Hi, this is Coffee Beans – [Link] Hey. white chocolate iced blended drink for 4.95. It is a lot harder to chug, but I highly recommend it. My hair has a heartbeat and I named Shloer. (crew laughing) – [Link] Wow, she’s wired man. – [Rhett] And there’s a weird relationship between them. She’s seems annoyed by Stewart. – [Link] Oh really? – [Rhett] Yeah. – [Link] Yeah, okay. – [Rhett] This looks like an icy that didn’t quite turn out. I never get these sorts of drink. – [Link] But the the fact that they call it a mocha frappuccino versus a iced blended drink. Frappuccino, iced blended drink. – [Rhett] Well, that’s just because they have a trademark or something. – [Link] Right, Coffee Bean needs a name for this. Maybe they could take Shloer. – Rhett There you go, it’s up for grabs. That actually is pretty good though. – [Link] Whoa, yeah. – [Rhett] It doesn’t seem like it’s gonna have that much flavor until you start sucking on it. – [Link] I am not used to getting the sweetness of the sweet drinks. – [Rhett] Yeah, it is so sweet. – [Link] Whoa, that is, I mean it’s almost too sweet for me. – [Rhett] Yeah, actually you kinda have to ease into that kind of thing. – [Link] Oh, oh man. I mean, this is probably gonna be just as sweet though. But look at the bottom. – [Rhett] It’s got a bunch of syrup on the bottom. – [Link] There’s that chocolate syrup, totally different experience. – [Rhett] The chocolate is so strong. I can’t say one of ’em stands out over the other. They’re different, and just the more I drink the less I like both of ’em. – [Link] This one’s is just very… It’s so sugary, and this one at least is more Chocolatey. – [Rhett] There’s more flavor happening the more I go back and forth. – [Link] Yeah, I’m definitely liking this one better. – [Rhett] This is starting to taste fakey. – [Link] Yes, I’m gonna give it a five. – [Rhett] I’m gonna give it a four. – [Link] Really? (bell pinging) – [Rhett] Yeah. – [Link] I’m gonna give this one a nice non-generous seven. – [Rhett] I’m not a huge fan, but it’s better than a four, I’m giving it a six. (bell pinging) (upbeat music) Okay, finally, last round, desserts. – And this is the Starbucks iced lemon cake loaf for 3.25. – [Rhett] I love, all right. – Yeah, Nora Jones likes this one too, I listen to a lot of her music. – Gotta here, I hate you. – Oh, wow! – This is Coffee Beans iced lemon cake loaf for 2.95. And screw Nora Jones, it’s my favorite. I’m so excited, I’m so excited! – [Link] Yes you are. – I’m so scared. – Snap out of it! You’re embarrassing your corporation. (crew laughing) – Wow. – No, I do not fall in love. (crew laughing) – [Link] He’s got dust in the face. – [Rhett] What is going in on? – [Link] But it was like sexual tension. – [Rhett] There’s so much sexual tension. (crew laughing) – [Link] Who knew a lemon loaf could do such things. – [Rhett] I don’t even know if I can eat now. – [Link] 2.95. – [Rhett] You don’t like lemon or cake, so I don’t know how you’re gonna- – [Link] I’m gonna be an impartial judge. – [Rhett] But the fact that they’re both lemon and cake means that your scores should- – [Link] Right. – [Rhett] Even itself out now. – [Link] I mean, they’re two versions of the same thing. Very similar in price, in general, I’ve noticed the pricing, at least for all the other rounds, has been exactly this same they’ve really locked in. Coffee Bean, I guess, matching Starbucks, so that’s taken off the table. – [Rhett] Oh, you don’t think Starbucks is copying Coffee Bean? – [Link] Probably not, not with 1,000 stores. – [Rhett] That is a moist cake, I love the cake pops at Starbucks because you’re sorta like, “How do they get this thing to be so moist?” – [Link] They’re almost wet. – [Rhett] They’ve somehow carried that philosophy into this cake. That tastes like something your grandma may ship you. You know how your grandma ships you cakes, and they’re really moist? – [Link] Yep, nana sends a pound cake for every birthday, just in a box, she mails it. – [Rhett] This is pretty moist too, at least it feels moist. Whoa. – [Link] Whoa! The icing is a lemony zest. – [Rhett] There’s more lemon and the crust on that is so good. – [Link] The Starbucks icing is just a sweet icing, it is not lemony. – [Rhett] I thought this was an incredible experience until I had this, what? – [Link] I would say it’s not quite as moist, and then it’s not as balanced because the icing is, wowza, so lemony. – [Rhett] This is still really good. – [Link] It almost steals the show, I give it a solid, solid seven. – [Rhett] I’m also gonna give it a seven (bell pinging) because it’s a great experience. But I’m gonna have to give Coffee Bean. I’m gonna go all the way to an eight. – [Link] Oh wow. – [Rhett] I’m not gonna get crazy here. – [Link] I’m gonna give it a seven. Nope, I gave that a seven, I’m gonna give this a six. (bell pinging) – [Rhett] And there you have it, we’ve scored all the items. – [Judge] Okay, the final scores are in, and by two points- – [Rhett] Whoa. – Your winner is Coffee Bee. – [Rhett] Oh really? – [Judge] Yeah, it was 81 to 83. – [Rhett] Coffee Bean beat (indistinct) major Starbucks! (Jennifer screams ) – [Link] Are you sure? – I have another cup. – [Judge] I think, yeah. (steward laughing) – You’re so hot when you do that. (crew laughing) I’m confused. Oh hi, you’re here. (crew laughing) – [Rhett] You can’t reign in love if it wants to happen. – It doesn’t wanna happen. – Congratulations Coffee Bean, a total surprise. Very, very close, you’re the caffeinated champion. And you know what? You won an opportunity to sponsor an episode of “Good Mythical Morning,” let’s talk. – [Link] Yeah, thanks for subscribing and clicking that bell. – [Rhett] You know what time it is? – Hey folks, I’m Funnels from San Francisco and today I made my first banana bread. And I’m a butter with some peanut butter blueberries. And it’s time to spin the wheel of mythicality. – [Rhett] I want a friend – [Link] I’m gonna follow him on TikTok. – [Rhett] I mean, I feel like, he has best friend material right there. – (laughs) Hey. – [Rhett] I mean, just think if you die. Click the top link to watch us find out if lavender is actually a good flavor and “Good Mythical Morning.” – [Link] Could be my best friend when you die. – [Rhett] I said if. – [Link] Oh.
