GMM 2154: Street Food From Other Countries Taste Test

Today we want our food to come from the streets of Indonesia. – Let’s talk about that. (upbeat music) – Good mythical morning. – And please welcome international pop star, songwriter, actress, music producer, dancer, (inhales sharply) model, businesswoman, and all-around superstar from Indonesia, Agnez Mo. – Oh my God! – Welcome to the show. (audience applauds) – Thanks for having me here. I’m excited. – Yeah. – For the food, especially. – Thanks for being here. (Agnez laughs) (mugs clink together) – Oh yeah, I’m excited about the food. I think you are our first guest to wear sunglasses on “Good Mythical Morning.” – Yeah, I kinda feel like, I mean, you got on sunglasses and a big coat. – You know… – I feel underdressed. – This is a whole look. See, you know what I mean? – Yeah, I’m liking the look. I’m liking the look, okay. – You wanna try it on? – Oh, yes, I do. – Oh, look at that. – Okay, yeah. – Ooh, ooh, see, that’s your look right there. Look at that, yep, yep. You got it. – Yeah. – That’s normal, but then make it edgier. Exactly. – So this is like… – This is like, whatever, right? – And this is like… – This is like mm-hmm. – Lifeguard. (audience laughs) – Lifeguard? – Hey, kids! – (laughs) No! – And this is your– – Stay outta the deep end! – This is your PFD. (Agnez laughs) – I think I may have stretched them a little bit. My hand is significantly bigger than yours. – It’s fine, it’s fine. We’re good, we’re good. – Okay, Agnez. – Yeah. – We are very excited to have you here. We’re very excited to eat some Indonesian street food. – Have you tried it though? – I mean… – Before? – We’ve been saving it for this. – Everything that we’re gonna be trying today is something that we have not tried, but are you like an expert on Indonesian street food? – I mean, I wanna say I am. Yeah. I’m pretty good at it. – Born and raised on the streets of Indonesia. – Yes, yes, absolutely, absolutely. (Rhett laughs) Absolutely, where everything is fried or deep fried. – Oh, oh, I like where this is going. – There’s a difference. – Yeah. – All right, so we’re gonna be guessing whether the dishes were eating are actually from the streets of Indonesia or somewhere else. – Yeah. – It’s time for… “Trying New Street Foods, “But Can We Guess Where They’re From “and Can Agnez Mo Help Us “or Will She Laugh and Call Us Dumb?” – Okay, each round “GMM” crew member and fellow Indonesian superstar, Davin, (cackles) is gonna bring out a dish for us to try. Link and I will have to guess if it’s a popular Indonesian street food or street food from another country by guessing Indonesian or Outdonesian. – Mm. – Have those terms ever been used in your presence? – No. – (cackles) Great. I was hoping for that. (Link laughs) – Now, you know, all these answers already. – I mean, I would hope so. – Okay. Well, we’re gonna find out. – I mean, somebody needs to know. – But who’s this Davin? Who’s this Davin? – Oh, you’ll find out. – Yeah. – Another superstar from Indonesia. – You might have to pull your sunglasses up when Davin walks in, – Oh, you know what? – Lemme tell you right now. He gonna burn your pupils up. – All right, Agnez, your job is to convince us that whatever we’re eating is Indonesian, even if it’s not. – Got you. – And if we get the majority of these correct, we’re gonna be treated to an amazing high note from Agnez Mo. – Oh, you mean like me singing? – I hope so, yeah. – Oh. (air whooshes) (upbeat music) Are you ready to meet superstar Davin? – Oh yeah, for sure. – Come on, Davin. – I’m curious. – Hello, Agnez. – [Agnez] Hi! (Davin and Agnez speak in foreign language) – Uh, we’re still here. – You know, I mean, basically, he was just saying that you guys are the greatest bosses he’s ever had. – Oh, he was talking about us? – Yeah. – Why’d he make such a stink face? – Amazing, amazing. No, no, no, he was like, “Oh, the greatest.” – Oh, okay, all right. – You know what I mean? – All right. – Yep. – What do we have here? – So it’s called Ceker Setan, AKA spicy fried chicken feet. And I know for sure that this is from Malang, and my boyfriend was born. (laughs) – Yep, that’s the foot right there. – Your boyfriend was born from a chicken foot. (Agnez laughs) They just took a chicken foot, put him in, and next thing you know… – My boyfriend was born in Malang, and so, he used to have this as his childhood street food. – I’m excited. (audience laughs) – [Agnez] Right? – Yeah. – It smells incredible. – Just like how Davin was excited to have you as his boss, you know? – (laughs) Yeah, I don’t trust nothing that’s happening here. – (laughs) Okay, let’s try this. – I do know this is a chicken foot. (Agnez groans) It’s bony. – Well, it’s a foot. – There are some techniques to it. – Ooh, it’s spicy. – This is really, really good. – It’s a little footy too. It’s a little funk that I’m kinda liking. That spice is really good. – Yeah. – Woo! – So… – And you went right for it, so definitely, you may be lying to us again. Your job is make us think it’s Indonesian each time, but we have to decide. – But look at my face. – Are you telling the truth? – I wouldn’t lie. – No, you have taken your sunglasses off. – This is real, right? – [Agnez] It’s amazing. Oh my God, this is so good. – I mean, the way she said it with such authority, and she really rolled that R. Say that again. – Ceker Setan. – Yeah, I mean, see? – Ceker. – You can’t just make that kinda thing up. – Yeah. – Exactly. – So let’s put our hands over it because we do that on the show sometimes. – No, no, we get to say Indonesia. – Oh yeah, all right. – [Link And Rhett] Indonesian. – Well, Ceker Setan is actually…Indonesian food. (Rhett and Link cheer) – Okay, yeah, it had to be. – Yeah, yeah. – And you know, I’d love to eat more of these later. (Rhett laughs) – Yeah, we’ll set ’em aside. – One point. (Agnez laughs) (air whooshes) (upbeat music) – Davin, are you ready to meet your most favorite bosses? – Oh, so favorite. (speaks in foreign language) (Agnez speaks in foreign language) – I think they’re going to a hockey game later. (Agnez laughs) Are you gonna invite us? – What, can we come? What did he say? – Yeah, yeah, I can’t. – [Link] What about us? – Yeah, no, English is my second language too, so I don’t think I can translate that. Yeah, it’ll be weird. – Okay. – Yeah, yeah. So, yeah. – Let’s see what we’ve got. – I feel like an Outdonesian right now. (Agnez laughs) Let me tell you right now. – For real. – Okay. – Oh, this is my favorite one. (Rhett laughs) – Is it? – Oh my gosh, yeah. It’s it’s called Pempek, a fish cake made with ground fish and tapioca. – [Link] Is that an egg in the middle? – [Agnez] Yeah. – [Link] Oh, that’s, oh man. That’s a whole egg. – They got a egg inside a fish, y’all. – But I feel like you’re gonna love it though. This one, I vouch for it. – It looks incredible. – If you want to get in on this. Hey, it’s ground fish with a egg in the middle. – Yeah, and there’s noodles here too. So basically what you do is use, Okay. – Can I use my hand? – Yeah, yeah, hey. Okay, usually we would do it like that. – Okay, nice. – I know. – Ooh, this is good. So do you have a childhood memory that’s associated with this, like the first time you had it? (Agnez groans) Where were you? – Indonesia has a lot of islands, right? And so, even though- – [Link] At least 15,000. – Yeah, so basically, because we have so many islands and each city has their own little thing, their own street food, even though you’re Indonesian, sometimes you don’t know every street food. – But you did know this? – I definitely- – If she was lying… – It’s like North Carolina and South Carolina. – Yeah. – I don’t know what they’re doing down there. Putting mustard sauce on barbecue. – Right. – Is it like that? – But this, definitely, one of my favorite. – I mean, it’s really good. Yeah, but it can be from anywhere, and she could definitely be lying. – I think she mighta sold it a little too hard. – Right, especially from the beginning. “Oh, this is my favorite.” – Then my favorite, and then she started pouring stuff on it. She’s like doing like a physical thing. This is the thing they do. They pour it. – Yeah. – I mean, it’s just pouring. Oh, she’s still here. (laughs) – All right, so we’re gonna say… – [Rhett And Link] Outdonesian. (Agnez laughs) – This is actually Indonesian food! – Ah, dang! – Okay. – I told you, I won’t lie to you guys about this. – Well, you didn’t. – You know? I mean, me and Davin wouldn’t lie to you. – This is great. – [Rhett] It’s very good. – [Agnez] This is really good, right, yeah. You know what’s funny about this food is that it can be considered as dessert, but also main course. – Really? – Yeah, ’cause some people would eat this as their main course, but some people- – Fish with egg for dessert? – Yeah, yeah. – I gotta go to Indonesia. (air whooshes) (upbeat music) – Davin! – Now Davin, were you a fan of Agnez? – Yeah. – Back in the day, you growing up in Indonesia? – Yeah, I grew up watching her judging “Indonesian Idol.” – Yeah. – “Indonesian Idol.” (Agnez laughs) Almost said the wrong country here. (Rhett and Agnez laugh) Yeah, here’s your dish. (speaks in foreign language) – Hey, he pointed at Link. – Really? – Yeah. (speaks in foreign language) (Agnez speaks in foreign language) – Okay, got you. – He was talking about me? – That was me. – No, no, no, he was talking about the food. So when he pointed… – He pointed through me to the food? – Yeah. (audience laughs) – And didn’t say anything about it. – Yeah, it was more like that, you know what I mean? – It didn’t seem that. – Well, from my perspective, it seemed like it was all about Link. – All right, let’s see what we got. (taps on metal lid) – Okay, let’s do this. Oh, my favorite. Oh my gosh, I can’t believe that you guys have this for me. Okay, okay, so this is called (speaks in foreign language), all right, which is battered and deep fried squid. – [Rhett] That is some- – It’s an entire squid. – This is so good. This is so good. – Each one is a squid? – Yeah, so as kids, one of my most favorite puppet show is like a shadow puppet show. It’s called (speaks in foreign language.) And so, I would always watch that while eating this. – “Hello, kids!” – It was a deep fried squid show. – No, it’s definitely not. – “Hello, kids.” – So I ate this while watching (speaks in foreign language.) – (in squeaky voice) You’re gonna grow up and become an international superstar. (Link laughs) – Oh, this is so good. – (in high-pitched voice) “Eat me kids.” – Oh my God. Yeah, I remember it. – What part do you suggest? I love fried squid. – I usually would go from the top, yeah. – From the top? (Rhett crunches on food) – This could be from anywhere, man. – [Rhett] I mean… – Mm, it brought up so, so much memories. It’s crazy. – Did it though? I mean, the last two. – I mean, did it? – Indonesian, so I mean, sooner or later, there’s gotta be an Outdonesian. – This is like standard test-taking strategy. – Right. – Oh my gosh. – You can’t go C, C, C. You gotta go B the next one. (Agnez crunches on food and groans) – Okay, so we gotta be saying, this is? – Very good, but- – [Rhett And Link] Outdonesian! – Are you sure? – Outdonesian. – Okay, so this is in fact Outdonesian! – Yes! – Okay, all right. Where’s it from? – [Woman Off-Camera] Okay, so Agnez actually called this dish Sea of Lies is what it translated into in Indonesian. – Oh, really? – Sea of Lies. – [Woman Off-Camera] But it’s actually a Taiwanese street food known as Giant Fried Squid, and for obvious reasons, it’s an easy find in Taiwan’s street markets. – Oh. – Have you had it though in Taiwan? – Nope. I mean, I look kind of convincing, but yeah. – Yeah, yeah. But our test taking skills are just… – Amazing. – Too much to contend with. – Oh, that part down there. (Agnez laughs) (air whooshes) (upbeat music) – So who knew, Davin, when you were watching “Indonesian Idol” and “The Voice” too, you’re a coach on “The Voice,” that you’d be here now? – Came a full circle. – Oh, it’s a full circle. – It’s a full circle. – How is it a full circle? – Like a… – We know what a circle is. (Davin and audience laugh) – Exactly. – I’m saying, but you didn’t start out here. – No, I didn’t start out here, yeah. – So it’s kinda more like a- – Straight line. – A line, yeah. – It is a straight line. – But anyways… (Rhett laughs) (Davin and Agnez speaks in foreign language) – I feel like he point at me on that one. – Pointed at you, pointed at his mouth. – Oh, no, no, no, he was basically telling me that, “Hey, the cameras are there.” So make sure that I have good angle and everything. – No, no, you were talking about Rhett. I don’t think. – What did he say about Rhett’s beard? – We know he said something. – Oh, what did you say? I don’t know, I completely forgot. Okay, so the next one right here. – Big and ugly. It’s big and hairy. Don’t let the beard get in the dish. – Oh yeah, the food. That’s why we’re here. – That’s right, that’s right. – Right, exactly. – Not here to talk about my beard that hides nothing. – Oh, what is this? – Oh yeah, okay, so this is called Martabak Manis. Okay, and so, it’s a dessert consisting of, as you can see, peanut, chocolate, cheese between a pancake-like dough. – Oh, wow. – So what would be the circumstance that you would be like, yeah, I’m in the mood for this thing? – Smells like peanut butter pound cake. – You know, it’s a dessert that you can find anywhere really. It’s kind of like a part of our life in Indonesia. So every city must have something like this. – You know, this is amazing. – Even restaurants, right? It’s not really like a street food, street food. – Seeing that it’s just street food, but it’s also in restaurants. – Yeah. – That’d a weird thing to make up. – Be a weird thing to make up. – No one would make up that kinda thing ’cause it’s like an incidental thing, you know what I mean? – We’re two outta three. I’m feeling Indonesian. – I’m on team Indonesian as well, so- – [Rhett And Link] Indonesian. – This is unfortunately. – Indonesian? – Indonesian. (Rhett and Link laugh) – All right, all right, so we’re three out of four. – Okay, all right. Three outta four. – So we’re still in the majority. And this is one of my favorite things. – Really, out of the three? – Oh, definitely outta the three. I’m talking about- – In life. – Out of things. – Oh, wow. – Top three favorite things for Link of all time right there. – Yeah. (audience laughs) And you were here for it. (air whooshes) (upbeat music) All right, Davin. – [Davin] All right, last round. – Yep, and we’ve already won. – Last round. – So we get the high note, but this is just for the fun of it. – Yeah, for sure. (Davin and Agnez speak in foreign language) – I know, right? – Oh, engineer. (Agnez speaks in foreign language) – [Davin] Oh! – Yeah. – Her brother’s also an engineer. (Davin and Agnez speak in foreign language) – It’s very common in Indonesia. (Agnez speaks in foreign language) – Yeah, is he talking about engineering degrees? – Here’s what they said… – Yeah, basically he spoke highly. – Yeah, hee was like, “Oh, you might be surprised, “but hey, they both got engineering degrees.” And you were like, “Well, my brother does too.” – Yeah, exactly. – And then you said it’s very common in Indonesia. – Yeah. – To be an engineer. Almost everyone is. – Yeah, exactly. (audience laughs) – Well, here. – That’s the definitely what we were talking about. – Yeah, right, yeah, yeah, yeah. Who’s not an engineer in Indonesia? (Agnez laughs) That’s where it went. – That’s really special. It means something here. It means something here to have an engineering degree. – Not everybody. – To do what we do with it. – Right, right, right. – Right. – It’s a very small percentage of the population in America. – Got you, got you. (Link taps on metal lid) – All right, see we finally caught up with you and your lies. (Agnez laughs) – All right, what do we got here? – Okay, so this is the last round, right? – Yes. Okay. – A bowl of? – So this is called (speaks foreign language.) It’s rice cakes, fish cakes, and chili sauce stir fry. – I don’t know why I poured these out. I just thought in maybe. – That’s how we do it now. – Yeah, we definitely don’t do it like that. – Yeah, engineers don’t behave like that, Link. They also don’t use the not sharpened. Like I was like (grunts) – It’s like, “This doesn’t work.” – It’s been a while since I got my degree. – It’s the other way around. (Davin and Agnez speak in foreign language) (everyone laughs) – Yeah? – [Davin] Yeah, yeah. (everyone laughs) – We’re all laughing. We’re all laughing at something. – Exactly. – Not us. (Agnez laughs) – Oh, this is so good. Oh my God. – You didn’t taste it yet. – Well, I already know how this tastes. – What is a tubular thing? – Mm, it’s rice cakes, fish cakes. – Very spongy. The sauce, very spicy. – [Agnez] Mm-hmm. – But this is nice. You’re just sitting on a curb, maybe. – [Agnez] And sometimes. – Seeing people walk by. – Just trying to create this scene. – Oh my God, this is… – Yeah. (audience laughs) – And sometimes we just use it as side dish. again, if we wanna have the main course, and this would be something on the side. – Does this bring up any specific memories? – I mean, I know… – After a show? – (laughs) No. – Is this on your rider? – This is too spicy for me to have after a show. – Oh. – Yeah. – You go spicy before the show? – Absolutely, always spicy before the show. ’cause then you have like your metabolism going. – [Link] It cleans you out. – Yeah, exactly. (audience laughs) – You gotta be ready to crowd surf. – [Agnez] Oh, hey. – You don’t want anybody to press too hard anywhere. – Always, always. – Have an accident. I had a crowd surfing accident one time back when I used to be in a band. – Oh, really? – Yeah. – Wow. – Yeah. – What is it called, Engineering Band? – (laughs) Engineering Band, Band of Engineers really is what we called ourselves. – Oh wow, oh, that’s close. – Yeah. – [Agnez] Yeah. – We’re supposed to be backing you into a corner with your lies. And now all of a sudden you’re backing Rhett into a corner. – Hey, but I’m keeping up. (laughs) I’m doing my best. (Agnez laughs) – All right, so I got this rice tube on my toothpick here. – I mean, it’s called (speaks in foreign language), so you know – Oh, Indo. – that it’s from Indo, you know? – Oh, right, yeah. – Yeah. But maybe that- – Maybe it doesn’t. – They threw us off. I mean, listen, we can’t lose. Let’s say Outdonesian. – Outdonesian. – Outdonesian. This is from somewhere else. You’re full of lies. – Mm, are you sure? – Yep. – This is in fact Outdonesian! (Rhett laughs and Link claps) – All right, what is it? – [Woman Off-Camera] Yeah, the name that Agnez used directly translates to not from Indonesia. (Rhett laughs) – Oh. – [Woman Off-Camera] Hence the Indo. – Got it. – [Woman Off-Camera] It’s from South Korea, and it’s called Tteokbokki. It originated as a royal dish during the Chosun dynasty period. But has since become one of South Korea’s top street foods. – Well, it’s very good. It’s very good. – That is very good. – Yeah, it is, and we won that high note. So let’s have at it. – Oh. – Here you go, Agnez. – Oh, there you go. Note. (audience laughs) – Seriously. – It’s just a note that says hi on it. I feel totally just taken advantage of. – Yeah, exactly. There you go. – Unless you sign it for us. – You won that round. Amazing, right? – That’s a nice glitter work. – Yep. – This has been an amazing experience. It’s been cool to hang out, get to know you. You should get to know Agnez if you don’t know her already.
