GMM 2354: Cheap vs. Expensive Packaged Food (Taste Test)

Can we taste the fancy packaging? – Let’s talk about that. (gentle upbeat music) Good Mythical Morning! – Have you ever been paralyzed by the sheer number of choices in the grocery store aisle and all you wanna do is just get a bag of coffee? – Yes. – Well, you may have noticed that there’s a whole world of trendy aesthetic made for Instagram food packaging out there. – Yeah, there’s lots of fancy packaging and for some, the temptation to choose the food based on which has the prettiest packaging is very real. But our question is, does the trendy packaged food actually taste any better or what if it tastes worse ’cause they put more time and money into making a nice wrapper instead of making tasty food? – I don’t know, man. That sounds like a question that these two guys should answer. It’s time for “Doth One’s Eyes Deceive Thine Tongue? Or Doth Pleasant Colors and Shapes Deemeth Premier Tastes? Bring Forth the Sustenance!” (gentle medieval music) – [Stevie] Okay, guys. Each round, you’re gonna be shown four different versions of the same type of food. I want you to give us your gut instinct based on looks only and imagining price is not a factor. Which of those choices you would gravitate towards in the grocery store aisle. No overthinking, no reading the fine print on the packages. Just a quick decision. – [Link] Yeah. Okay. – [Stevie] And then after you choose your favorites based on looks, we’ll then have you blindly taste each option and tell us which one tastes the best and then we’re gonna see if there’s a correlation between your favorite packaging and your favorite taste. You got it? – All right. – Starting with this one. – [Stevie] Yeah, we’re gonna start with olive oil. – Carlini Extra Virgin. – [Rhett] That seems cheap. – Yeah, I don’t think I’d picked that one. Now, this white bottle here. – This is a top shelf one. – Brightland. – And it’s from California and it’s in a completely opaque bottle, which means a lot when you’re dealing with oil. You want either dark or most likely, you want opaque, but people are sometimes afraid of opaque. – I just think it’s cool. It’s like, it looks modern, but yet rustic at the same time. – [Rhett] But there’s a big difference- – [Link] I’m picking that one. – There’s a big difference between California and Italian based ones. You know, in terms of like the aesthetic, right? – This one’s got a big olive tree on it. – I’m not, that seems super authentic, but- – It’s got the year 1906. – I don’t like the lightness of the bottle. So then you got one that also looks authentic. Definitely Italian. They’ve got the dark bottle. I like that, but… – [Link] I’m choosing the white one. – [Rhett] I’m also choosing the white one. – It’s just so fun looking. It’s like, it’s got to taste the best. – [Stevie] Okay, so before you taste the olive oils, we asked the Mythical crew the same question about packaging. We showed them all of these bottles and the results were 51% of them chose the same bottle that you did. The Brightland one. – We’re all these California SoCal people. – Only 51, though? – [Stevie] And then 21% chose the Carlini bottle and 15 chose the Frantoi Cutrera. – Cutrera. – [Stevie] And 13% chose Lucini, so they overwhelmingly agreed with your choice, but they didn’t get to taste anything. So why don’t you go ahead and taste the oil. – They are gonna taste different, I’m gonna tell you, ’cause these are from Italy and this one is actually from California. So there’s gonna be a difference. Boy, that’s very fresh. Like- – It tastes like olives. – Very fruity. – It’s not supposed to do that. – [Rhett] Well, you probably don’t typically do this. You probably do it with vinegar. – [Link] And spices and stuff. – And I just, I love olive oil. Put it my smoothie. I recommend it. Seems a little bit weird – See, I don’t even know what good olive oil is supposed to taste like. I like this one better. – [Stevie] Well, it’s really what is good to you. – [Link] This one’s better to me. – Oh, actually, that second one had a weird aftertaste. – [Link] This one’s really mild, which I like. And I’m already going for the fourth. That one’s too olivey for me. – None of ’em are bad, but. – Yeah. So I mean, this is definitely my favorite. Christy will buy all types of olive oils. Like, if you find one you like, why get up a whole bunch of different ones? I think she likes to set the packaging out on the kitchen counter. – I actually like the first one the best going back to it. These three all ended up having an aftertaste that I wasn’t as big of a fan of. – [Stevie] Okay, so Rhett, you actually chose Brightland. – [Rhett] Yeah. – [Stevie] You chose the one that that matches. Link, you chose Carlini. So Rhett, that means you get a point. You also get, because it’s like, the trendiest packaging that you chose, you’re gonna get a little trendy item accessory as we progress through here. – Look at you, man. – Now, let me just say – This is helping me ’cause now I’m not gonna choose the trendiest olive oil. – So you can see, you might not be able to. You can actually see it. This one’s significantly lighter. I don’t know a lot about olive oil, but I think that because these are all like Italian, they are more olivey and they had a stronger aftertaste. While this one is actually the most subtle, which is typical of a California olive oil, which is why I think I liked it and I’m actually surprised that you didn’t like it. But I think if you went back to it, you would like it more. That’s my trendy sort of evaluation. – [Stevie] It’s actually Alive from Brightland. Their artist capsule collection of flavored olive oils was on Oprah’s favorite things of 2022 list. It’s $37 for the 12.7 ounce bottle, or $2.91 cents an ounce. So it is the pricest of the lineup. The next one is Lucini for $1.98 cents an ounce. Then Carlini, which is actually an Aldi brand of olive oil for 28 cents an ounce. So it’s the cheapest one. – Leave it to me to pick Aldi. – [Stevie] And then finally, Frantoi Cutrera is a luxury olive oil known for being high quality that’s won the most awards of any olive oil producer in Italy. – Really? – And that is $2 an ounce. – So I’ve picked the cheap one. – [Stevie] Yeah. (gentle medieval music) Okay, moving on to coffee. What looks good to you? – Not this one. – Yeah. – [Rhett] That looks like just bulk. – [Link] It’s too big. – It almost looks like Folgers. – Yeah. Nantucket blend. I really think I like the green, but it’s a little too shiny for me. Something about this one matte finish. – This one. I mean, that’s cool. Like, that’s a super cool… – It’s a baby sumo wrestler with a huge amulet listening to a jam box on a sleeping yet walking bear. – Yeah. It doesn’t make you think coffee. – Time to rise. – Hey, but do you agree with me that I don’t think I like things that are trendy because I like things are trendy. I think that if something looks really cool like this, it’s kind of like, these people have just like, in recent times like, really like figured out the latest like way to do something. – Yeah, yeah. – It’s like indicative- – It’s fresh. – Of like, kind of being in the moment with what’s happening with coffee. – Yeah. – So I mean, this one is just like- – We’re discovering new things every day. If that doesn’t impact what you’re putting out into the world… – Oh, we actually have these, Link. We forgot ’em in the first round. – [Link] Well, we’re both picking this, though. – Yeah, I know, but I just wanna show everybody. – We’re both picking it. – I’m picking this one. – I’m gonna pick it, too. I mean, when they’re different, it makes more sense, but. – [Stevie] Okay, so you’re both going with the trendy packaging again here. – Wunderground. – [Stevie] And the Mythical crew agreed with you. 58% of the vote went there. 34% went to Allegro and then goes down from there. No one chose the Community one, just like you threw it under the bus. – Allegro packaging straight down the middle. – You’d be shamed if you did. – Very Starbucks-esque. – [Stevie] Yeah. So go ahead and taste. – Why’d y’all bring these mugs back? I made it clear that I don’t like a mug that I can’t put my finger through. – And they made it clear, too. That’s not bad. I prefer it with cream, but we’re going straight up. That’s not as good. – That’s bad. – That’s Community, man. (chuckles) – I mean, number one was so much better. That tastes like cardboard. – It’s got a stronger taste, but it’s a bad taste. – Why does that not? – Is it just because we tasted the first one? – Now, this one’s mild. – [Rhett] That’s mild. – Nutty. This is my second choice, but this is my first choice. This is this taster’s choice. – Well, I’m having trouble now. – Come on, man. Come on, man. You taste it. You either like it or you don’t. – [Rhett] I wanna know which one I like better. – Yeah, this one’s so mild. I like a little bit of boldness, but they called it medium roast. – I think I’m agreeing with you. It’s a close one. That last one is a close second. – [Stevie] Okay, well, so Link is pretty consistent here because the first one is Green Mountain Coffee, which is a Keurig brand, for $7.20. It’s by far the cheapest out of all them, so that’s what you taste wise chose that you like the best. – Really? – [Stevie] Rhett, you also chose the cheapest one. Next was Allegro Coffee for $11.67 a bag. – I didn’t like that. – [Stevie] Then the one that you had crapped on was Community. (laughing) – Oh, yeah. So the one I almost chose. I got very close. – [Stevie] Yeah, so the trendy option is Wunderground and they’re mostly known for selling coffee that has mushrooms in it, but this one is their regular mushroom-free coffee for $16 a bag, so no trendy items. – And you know how much I love mushrooms. It’s a lyric. – Yeah, it’s a lyric. (gentle medieval music) – Hey, we just released these high quality tees that are embroidered with the mythical M here and then right there. – Look! – It says Mythical on the sleeve. – [Rhett] Four colors! – This monochromatic M logos come in black, ivory, olive, and mustard, which I guess will be similar to that. – Well, hey, listen, that’s not. This isn’t not. I don’t know what mustard it is. Haven’t seen it yet. – We also have Mythical hats, too, that you can get. These are our more subtle design you can wear in any semi-professional location. – But if you did this- – Like a semi-professional. – If you did this, it would kind of feel like you were delivering something. I mean, I suggest a mix and match. – Wear the cayenne hat with it. – Right, that guy’s not delivering anything except himself. – So get these at mythical.com. Real embroidery! – [Stevie] Okay, crackers are up next and you can see that the images of the crackers themselves are on the packaging, so- – Yeah. – [Stevie] Before you taste, we’re gonna have you put blindfolds on. But for now, just take a look. See what you like on the look-see. – Sea salt gourmet. It’s got a turtle on the top. – It feels pretty like, run of the mill. Pepperidge Farm-y. – [Link] I think I would… – [Rhett] This is subtle. – This one’s too boring. The stonewall sea salt. Yeah, I would pick the first one. – [Rhett] It feels like it might be healthier, though, you know? – Oh, this is bad. Jovial. – [Rhett] There’s a lot of stuff happening. – This is inherently good, but… – Easy to digest. It’s like, is that for old people? Yeah. – And this right here, Moon Shot. Boy, this is fun. Climate friendly crackers. They’re really pushing the climate stuff instead of the taste. That scares me. I mean, I’m afraid. – No added sugar. – Climate stuff does scare me ’cause it’s real. All that climate stuff you’ve been hearing about? It’s real. So I don’t know. Maybe they’re trying too hard to make something… – I actually think I would choose the simple one in this one. I think I would go with we’re just making crackers. – Well, use your sticker ’cause we’re disagreeing here. – We’re making crackers. Oh, I just put a sticker in my drink. – I think I would choose this one because yeah, they haven’t said anything about how awesome this stuff tastes. – [Stevie] Okay, you’re moving away from trendy in this round. – Yeah. – [Stevie] Just so you know, the Mythical crew chose the trendy Moon Shot, 43%. The second one was Terrapin, the one that you chose, Link, with 33%. – Yeah. – [Stevie] But let’s go ahead and put on those blindfolds. (gentle medieval music) – As you can see, we can’t. – But we can taste. – It’s the best way to taste crackers In the dark. – [Rhett] Is this the first one? – Yeah. That’s not a bad cracker. – It’s got a nice flavor. – [Link] Is this the second one? – [Stevie] Yeah. – Okay. – [Rhett] Crispier. – That is also not a bad cracker. – [Rhett] I like that cracker. – It’s almost buttery. – Yeah. Yeah, it is! – Is this the third one? – [Stevie] Yeah. – This the third one? – [Stevie] Yeah. – It taste like if a Pringles made a cracker and not in a good way. – It doesn’t have any salt. – [Rhett] Whatever that is, it needs more of what it doesn’t have. – Yeah. It’s not good. And then, is this the fourth one? – [Stevie] Down one more, Rhett. No, no, no. That’s the Pringles. – What is this one? – Link, you were correct. – This is the third one. – [Stevie] That’s the third one. – That’s a little one. – Is this fourth? – [Stevie] Down. – Go all the way down. – Tiny. – I’m gonna tell you right now, Rhett. This is tasteless. – You’re right. You don’t have to tell me twice. – This first one? – [Stevie] Yeah. – Oh, man. There’s no contest, man. One is great. – [Stevie] Okay, no need to hold it so far in the air. Let’s bring it down. Let’s nicely place. – See what I did, Rhett? Nicely placed. I like number two. Which one are you trying to hit? – [Stevie] You can, yeah. Okay. Okay. Now you can take your blindfold off. – Were you trying to hit number two? – Yeah. – Oh, good. We agree. – By far. – [Stevie] Number two is Stonewall Kitchen. So Rhett, you actually did pick the same. – I’ll be dag. Dagnabbit. – [Stevie] The first one was Moon Shot, the trendy one. – It wasn’t bad. – [Stevie] And also technically, it’s our cheapest out of all these at $4.99 a box. – And it’s good for the climate. – [Stevie] Yeah and then Stonewall is $7.95. Terrapin, the one that you chose packaging wise, Link, was the next one. – Horrible. – [Stevie] That you didn’t like for $6.95. – I blew it. – [Stevie] And then the last one was Jovial for $7. – Man, y’all doing it right over there in the Stonewall Kitchen. So look, all they care about, crackers. – Yeah. – They don’t care about the world. They just care about crackers. – It’s all about the crackers. – Yeah. (gentle medieval music) – This is a good thing here. – Ice cream’s a good thing. – Ice cream is a great thing. But like, yeah, I mean, I would say all three of these, the packaging is enticing. This right here, that’s just… – This is for children. If this is like, children’s birthday party. – Yeah, when they ain’t gonna see it. – Kids with no taste. – Ain’t gonna see where it came from. – Get ’em Signature Select. Alec’s is doing something. – So many ice creams. But see, this one, the Straus one is like, very farm-centric. Well, it says “Family creamery” on it. – I love this, as you can see, I love this aesthetic. I like browns and yellows and mustards. And so it’s like, it almost feels like you’re saying it’s all about the ice cream. Let’s not get too crazy with. – No, I disagree. I think they’re saying it’s all about our vibe. This one here, Straus, they’re saying it’s all about the ice cream. Remember where it comes from. It comes from a cow. It just seems very dairy farm. – [Rhett] Yeah, I don’t disagree. – It’s nostalgic, progressive, and then what do we have? Aplenty. – Something about it feels like it might not be made from real milk. You know what I’m saying? Like, sometimes you can send it a little bit too far. – Yeah, it seems like an alternative, but it’s not, though. – It’s not. I don’t know. There’s something. It shouts like, maybe this is oat milk. I know it’s not. I’m going with Alec’s. – This is a tough one. Yeah, Aplenty just doesn’t appeal to my vibe. I’m gonna go with Straus. That’s me. – [Stevie] Okay, this is a little bit of a weird one for the Mythical crew, I’ll say. So Alec’s one again ’cause it’s the trendiest. – This is fun. – [Stevie] For 43% of the vote. Aplenty was next with 33%, then we blacked out the Signature Select part of that packaging and the crew chose that next for 14%. – [Link] So Straus was nobody. – [Stevie] And Straus last, so. – [Rhett] Well, maybe it’s good. We’re gonna find out. – In the absence of anything to compare it to, that’s fine. It’s brownish. – It’s just vanilla ice cream. – [Link] Yeah. – [Rhett] It can only be so good and it only be so bad. – I think this one’s better. It’s creamier, isn’t it? – [Rhett] Yeah. – [Link] It’s hard to tell the difference. – Not a huge difference. This one’s the yellowish one. We got brown, we got white, we got yellow. – Something wrong. – There’s a whole different flavor in there. – Something naughty happened in there. – There’s a completely different flavor in there. – Could it be a Tahitian bean? – It might be a Tahitian bean. I don’t know it. I wasn’t expecting it. I’m gonna have to go back through these. – This tastes cheap. You just shoving all of ’em in your mouth at once? (crew laughing) How are you gonna decipher that? – I’m getting an initial taste. – You’re a freak of nature, man. – [Rhett] I don’t like that one anymore. – Yeah, I like the one you don’t like. – I like the one I do like. – But I also like this one. – [Stevie] You are both so predictable now because Link, you chose the cheapest one. Safeway Signature Select and Rhett, you chose the one that matches, Alec’s, the the trendy one, so you get a trendy item. – Really? – Yeah, again, it took going through them. – I thought this was the cheapest. – This is why you have to go through them four or five times, Link, because you gotta acclimate. And this took me off guard and you’re a hundred percent right. It was the Tahitian nature of the vanilla bean. – [Stevie] So the first one was Straus for $6.39 a pint. – I almost picked it. – [Stevie] And then Safeway for a 1.5 quart container for $6.89. And then Alec’s, which our design team said that this has the Chobanification element. – Yeah. – Yeah. – [Stevie] Of brands. – Yeah. – It’s the most expensive. Oh, my gosh. $10.80 a pint. – Hey, listen, I’m not saying it’s worth 11 bucks, but. – [Stevie] Oh, Aplenty is an Amazon brand for $3.99 a pint. – [Link] I’m standing by Straus, even though I didn’t get you right. I’m now choosing Straus. – [Rhett] Straus is definitely the second best, in my opinion. – [Stevie] Okay, so I mean, what did we learn? – Well, I would say if I hadn’t gone with my instinct in that second round and just chosen the coffee that was more subtle and I actually liked a little bit better if I’m really seeking, looking deep into my soul, I would say 75% of the time, my favorite was the one that was trendy. And even in the one that I wasn’t trendy, I still picked the packaging that I liked. So I should just trust the packaging. – And I should not. I should pick the best packaging and then I should put it back. – And get the cheapest one. – And grab something that’s just not that. Maybe the cheapest. Yeah. – You get the cheapest one and I get the trendiest one. It’s cool, man. Everybody’s happy. – But I am a fan of design. (crew laughing) – Let the record show that he is a fan of design. – Thanks for trying, subscribing, and clicking that bell. – You know what time it is. – My name’s Mikayla. – Hi, my name’s Lyla. – My name’s Findlay. – And it’s my birthday and we are taste testing fancy cakes. – [All] And it’s time to spin the Wheel of Mythicality! – Fancy cake tasting? – Happy birthday. – Click the top link to watch us discover which flavor toothpick taste the best in Good Mythical More. – And to find out where the Wheel of Mythicality is gonna land. – [Rhett] Get ecstatic with monochromatic!
