Can we make science happen with only our minds? – Let’s talk about that. (bright music) Good Mythical summer. – We are ancient in internet years. – But we keep our bodies fit by eating junk on the internet multiple days a week. – And we keep our brains fit by thinking really hard about science experiments that would be a crap ton easier if we just used instructions. – It’s time for Science Without Guidance, featuring the Beaker Boys. (upbeat music) – Hello, Beaker Boys. – Hello. – [Stevie] Here’s how this goes. Each round you’ll have 10 minutes to use some combination of the items in front of you to achieve a surprising scientific result. There’s some decoy items to throw you off, as well, and you can use lifelines to help you along the way, but they’re gonna cost you some points every time you use them. They are as follows. A message from Science Mike-Ayla about a scientifical principle at play. It costs one point. I reveal a decoy item, it costs 2 points per decoy item. – How do you feel about being cheaper than Stevie’s? – [Mikayla] I’m okay with it. – Okay. You’re a deal. You’re steal. – Yeah. – [Stevie] Or I vaguely tell you what result you’re trying to achieve- – Vaguely. – [Stevie] For three points. And you’ll have 30 points at your disposal and if you manage not to use all of them, you will receive actual Beaker Boys as a prize. – Really. – Are you ready? – Well, look, first, can I just point out- – We have to raise these boys? – This is lot like how actual science in real university, research universities happen. They’ve got decoy items. – Here you go. – They can ask for vague hints. Oh, you want me to go ahead and glove up? – I mean, they’re giving it to us and there is this torch here and I am gonna use that. – [Stevie] Okay, so this round has two decoy items. – We’re gonna put 10 minutes on the clock. Good luck, your time starts now. – I mean, this is a murder device. This is a lead pipe. – I need one of those next to- – Literally from Clue. – My bed. – A jawbreaker. – [Rhett] Well, you know what I’m doing with that. – The largest set of tweezers ever. Shall I, you want me to get some of the uni brow? – Mine quit growing. – See mine. – [Rhett] Looks like you got yours. – I still have to get mine. We have a little square of- – It’s a teeny screen for a little door. A little screen door. – A little screen. – ‘Cause if you put that screen, we could put that screen on the top of the thing. – We could. – And then we’ve got baking soda, science’s favorite powder and, of course, we have fire. (torch brews) Okay, I’m not gonna burn it all. So, see- – We know that the fire is not, it can’t be a decoy item. I mean, fire- – Fire’s too fun. – [Rhett] Fire is necessary. – We’ve melted a jawbreaker before, I think. – [Rhett] It’s fun. – Let’s just, but- Do you want to do it on top of a pipe? – Can you burn baking soda? What happens with that? And then if you put the pipe with the screen, that would like sift something. – I bet you the pipe is a decoy. – All right. – What’s the decoy item? – It’s expensive. – [Stevie] You do not need the baking soda. – Oh. – Okay, well, there you go. All right. – Okay. – And there’s one more of those? – [Stevie] Mm-hmm. – Come on, man. – Okay, now we can start trying things. – Yeah, let’s just- – You wanna put it on the pipe and then burn it so everybody sees it, it’s like a pedestal? – I mean, I don’t wanna, if I heat up the pipe, then it’s gonna be hot and I’m gonna grab it. – I got gloves. – I don’t have gloves. – Yeah, you do. – I mean, I have them, but I don’t have them on. – Why don’t you have the gloves on? – Huh? (torch brews) – See that? Well, it’s fun. I don’t know if that’s science, but it’s fun. (Link blows) (crew laughs) Now, I bet you $100 if you turn that upside down, that ball’s gonna stay there. (crew laughs) – That didn’t work. – Well, sorry. – Let’s bring Mikayla in, come on. She told me to wear gloves. – Okay. – She’s so helpful. It’s only one point. I’m not saying she’s cheap, but I’m saying the hint is cheap. – Okay. – I think you’re saying I’m cheap, it kind of feels that way. – Okay, I’m sorry. – You’re a steal. – I didn’t say it. – I know you didn’t, I appreciate you. Yeah, you never insult me. – That’s true. – I love you for that. – That is true. – We should’ve done it this way. – All right, you ready? – Well, she’s here, let her do her job. – Okay, acoustics and thermodynamics have been known to work together in great harmony. That wasn’t harmonious. – Okay. – Okay. – The tube is necessary. Thank you, Mikayla. – You’re welcome. – We’re going to be making a noise. (pipe sings) – All right- – Sound. – So, what we need to do, Link is you- – But not with our mouths probably. – Put that, you’re making like a reed. (pipe sings) What if you take this, what if you take this and you- – [Stevie] Less than five minutes remaining. – You make this like this, so you’re basically kind of creating like a- – I don’t think we need the jawbreaker, I bet. – Yeah, yeah, that’s what I’m saying. – And can we use heat to create- – Yeah, what you’re gonna do is I’m putting this in there. It’s making like an I don’t know what it’s doing really. – That doesn’t seem like it would be doing anything. – Blow into it like a trumpet. (pipe sings) Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. (pipe sings) As you blow into it, okay, as you blow into it, I’m gonna heat the pipe. – We’ve got Chappy, our resident photographer telling us no. (pipe sings) – Was that you or the heat? – I don’t know. – Was that you or the heat? (pipe sings) – It was me. – It was you? – Ooh, that stink. – Okay, we have to get the scientific principle. We gotta get the thing from Stevie. We have to get the information. – We know it’s a sound. – [Stevie] This result is so exciting, it makes you want to break out in song. (crew laughs) – We didn’t learn anything there. – We know everything we need. You tell us a little story. – Which end is the hot end now? – I think that end, yeah. You tell us a little story. – Is this in the hot end? – [Mikayla] Mm-mm. – Are you sure? – Positive. – ‘Cause I’m about to put my mouth on it. (crew laughs) Link, you tell us a story. (torch blasts) I’m gonna heat this screen up. Whoa, look at that. – It’s glowing. – You tell a story through the tube. – Well, I don’t know which end is hot! – You think everything is hot, man. – But there’s heat coming out. – There’s heat coming out, yeah. Now tell a story. – Once upon a time- (torch blasts) You were using the blow torch. Hello. – Don’t change it when I put it up there. – [Stevie] One minute. – Make one note. (Link vocalizes) – It did something, it make a noise. – I blew it out. (torch blasts) And it is not, I feel a lot of hotness coming out of there. – Look at that, that’s crazy. (pipe chinks) Now heat it up. (torch blasts) We’re failing, man. – We suck, we suck, man. – We’re failing. – I know we were on the right track. – You know what? Let’s just melt this completely. It was cool. The best thing we did was that. – [Stevie] And time. (horn blares) (torch blasts) – Look at that. – Eventually it’s gonna fall into the tube when it gets so small. (torch blasts) (bright orchestral music) We could go down to Venice, man, and just put a hat out, people will start putting money in it. (crew laughs) (bright orchestral music) Here we go. (Rhett and Link yell) – Yeah. – Thank you, that hat’s coming around. Thank you, thank you, thank you. We’ll be here tomorrow at the same time, thank you, thank you, thank you. – And then if I pick this up. – Oh, you made art, man, look at that. – So, Stevie, we did it. – Yeah, yeah, we did it. What we’re saying is we did it. – [Stevie] I mean, it is hard to believe, but that is not what we were looking for. – Look how cool it is, though. – [Stevie] I will tell you who did get it and that is Caitlin. – [Link] Oh, so she did use that. Oh, and she folded it. – [Rhett] I did that, too. – [Link] Look at that, you did that. (whimsical music) – [Rhett] Oh, I was on the right track. – [Link] You were on the right track. Oh, she shoved it. (pipe sings) – [Rhett] So, it makes a reed, I was completely right, but I had no idea. – [Stevie] So, here’s how it works. The blow torch rapidly heats the heavy gauge metal screen inside of the pipe. As the hot air rises, cool air begins to be pulled up through the pipe. – We were so close. – We got close. – [Stevie] The air moving through the pipe vibrates the metal screen, which leads to resonance inside the pipe, causing the pipe to sing. – Like an organ, but like a really hot one. – Here’s one for us to try. (torch blasts) – Oh, that thing’s hot, yeah. (pipe sings) – Oh! – Watch out! Watch out, watch out! (upbeat music) – [Stevie] Your lifelines are the same. There are still two decoy items and your time starts now. – We got some water. – That’s just to stay hydrated. – We’ve got some bubbles. We’ve got a can of coke. We’ve got string that’s already tied. – Tied in what, a loop? – A loop. And then you can- – Well, that’s a bubble maker. – That’s a bubble maker waiting to happen, try that. And then we have straws, four of them, four straws, so I bet you, can you make a long straw with that and then finally we have a penny. This one has Lincoln on it. – Penny feels like a thing that doesn’t matter. – Bubbles and straw- – I mean, pennies aren’t even worth a penny anymore. – Try to even see if you can make a bubble with the ring there. – I mean, I have to think you can. Here, pour some of this in the tray. – Well, the tray’s not part of it. So we can’t, oh, you’re just saying to get rid of it? – No, no, so I can dip it. See, I can’t get the whole thing wet. – Well then, that’s the wrong track then. ‘Cause we can’t use the tray for like part of this experiment. – Can we use the tray for part of the experiment? – You may. – Yeah. – I’m saying of course we can, but we shouldn’t because the tray’s always here. – Yeah, but the tray’s always there. – All right, fine. – So I’m just saying, this is the way that I can actually get the thing completely wet and yeah, it’s just like you gotta have like a- – Four straws in it? – Something to like get it- – Then why would there be, if you tied the penny to the- – I don’t think the penny’s part of it. – Like blowing a bubble under water. – [Rhett] This is way too much dexterity. – [Link] Would be really cool. – Way too much dexterity. – I’m gonna suck up some of this. Mm, mm-mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm. – Blowing a bubble under water. You know, it’s just gonna be a bubble under water. (water bubbles) – Look at that. – Yeah. All right, we did it. I think we got a lot. Actually, we got more, we got what we needed from Mikayla’s hint last time. – Yeah, and it’s cheap. – And it’s a bit redundant. – She’s not cheap. – So, okay, Mikayla, let’s get that because I think that helps us establish what was a decoy. – Good gosh, taste this. – I’d rather not. – I just wanted you to know how bad it is. – Yeah, trust you. – Okay, things can seem really tense on the surface, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. – Tense on the surface. – So, surface tension is what we’re dealing with. – Surface tension, so we want to pour water. – Now we’ve got bubbly water, which is probably a problem. – We can get you a refill, we’ll see. – All right. I think we need another water. – (yells) Oh, there’s so much tension. – We could build. – That’s cool. – I don’t know. And then we did that one. – I think we gotta get a decoy out. We gotta get a decoy. – Give us a decoy. – [Stevie] You do not need the Coke. – Yeah. – [Link] Okay. – What if you put the string inside the straw and then it like, this is tough, y’all. – How do you do this? – Can you tell us whether or not your hint is gonna be helpful or not. – [Stevie] Mm-hmm. – ‘Cause it wasn’t last time. – [Stevie] It is going to be helpful this time, actually. – I feel like we gotta get it. – All right, we’ll spend three points on it. – [Stevie] Making a circle in a square is tricky, but not impossible. – Making a circle in a square. – The only way to make a square is with the four straws. That’s the only thing I know. – Are we trying to make a square bubble? Are we trying to make a cube bubble? – Oh, you know what? These straws have joints and then what you do is you can make a square. – We’re making a bubble wand, bro. – And I don’t think we need the penny. If we don’t need the penny, then why do we need this? – I think this, here put this around it before you connect it all together, so that we can hold it by this. – That might be true. – And pick it up and then blow it and then we don’t need this, but if we don’t need the penny, then we do need the water. What did she say? Making a square in a circle. Huh? – [Stevie] Reverse. – Making a circle in a square. – Where’s this thing? Where’s the string? – Right here. – Put it on there. – Right there. – Okay. – Making a circle in a square is- – I think it’s basically making a bubble with a square. – And then we’re gonna take this. – It’s actually a diamond. – But then, Rhett, how do we use the penny if we’re not using the water? If solution gets into eyes, rinse immediately with water. That’s why we need the water. – [Rhett] We just wanna mix it up a little bit, you know. – This does not say concentrate. Look, see, look, there’s a square bubble. – Okay. And now- – I’m gonna blow it through the penny. (crew laughs) – Yes, that’s a circle from a square. – Made a circle from the square jerks. – But we didn’t use the penny. – Yeah, that’s our payment. I make a bubble, you give me a penny. – [Stevie] One minute. – I make a bubble, you give me a penny, ’cause it’s like, again, we’re back at Venice and all you got is a penny. – 13 points remaining. – All you got’s a penny. All you got is a penny. Give the man- – Oh, oh, oh, oh, look at this. Let’s put this, make the bubble, put this on it and I’m gonna blow and it’s gonna make, it’s gonna make the thing through- – What? Oh, you broke it. – Okay, for two points we can remove something. I gotta know if it’s the penny or the- – We got seven seconds. – See, she gave me another one of these. Seven seconds. – We did it, I just think we did it. – Well, they would’ve said. (horn blares) – [Stevie] You’re so close, your time is up, but I want you to get it because your instinct was correct, but you put the string on at the wrong time. (buzzer blares) – I bet you Caitlin knows how to do it. – [Stevie] Yeah, let’s toss to Cailin. (whimsical music) – [Link] Oh, she did use the tray. I stand corrected. – She did use the water. – And the water. – [Link] So I stand doubly corrected. But I did come up with the square. – [Rhett] You did do that. – [Link] See, I was trying to do that. – Oh, my gosh. Oh, my gosh. We have to do it, Link. We have to do it now. – Well, hold on. The pen, the pen was not part of it. – It could be your finger, it could be your finger. I’ll do it with my finger. – [Stevie] So, the science behind what you’re gonna attempt now is when you place a loop of string on a plane of soap and pop the inside of the circle, the surface tension of the soap pulls at the edges of the string until the string has nowhere else to go. Once it’s pulled taught, it forms a perfect circle. So, all you gotta do is just get it on there without it folding over. – Right. – Which I can totally do, like, oh, schnazz. – It’s hard to pick up. Is there a bubble on that? – Just use this. Use it, we have it. – Whoa, there we go. Oh, you got the string on it. The extra string is leaning on it. – I think that’s okay and then this string, oh, gosh. I feel like such a failure. – It popped. (upbeat music) – Reminder, Good Mythical Evening is coming up real fast. It’s gonna get wild, it’s gonna get crazy. It’s gonna be unhinged. We’re gonna be plastered. – Drunk and crunk. – We’re going live on August 24th at 10 p.m. eastern, 7 p.m. pacific, tickets available now at goodmythicalevening.com. – If you dare, rated R, baby. – [Stevie] Okay, so you have three decoys in this round. – Why y’all gotta do that? – Same life lines. – Why? – [Stevie] Your time starts now. – Link, let me make an observation. – If we get Stevie, that’s three, we can remove two decoys and still have a point and win. – Well, that’s a great observation. My observation was gonna be we could just sit here and just chat it up and not even try and we would just lose five points and still have three and win. – Yep. The Beaker Boys know how to make content. – But the Beaker Boys wouldn’t do that. – Salt. Balloon. A glow stick? – Yeah. – Don’t activate it yet. – I’ve got an idea. – So, we’ve got a bowl of ice and we’ve got look-a there, I found a Sprite. – Sprite, I get it. – And- – Okay. – Now salt and ice creates a- – Cold environment. So, you’re thinking exactly what I’m thinking and I think the Sprite, decoy. I think the scissors, decoy. I think the balloon, decoy. I think, just go with me here, I’m probably wrong. We want to, I bet you if you make this super cold, something crazy happens. – Okay. – So, this is like homemade ice cream. – [Link] Mm-hmm. But typically it rotates. – Yeah, you put it in there and I’ll rotate. – Okay. I think you should cut it and then drizzle all of the glow into something. – But there’s three decoys. – And then you don’t need the salt. – Carbonated beverages are always decoys. Isn’t that poison? – Stupid question. – Yeah. – All right, so- – Just put it on the ice. Oh, it’s a gel. – Maybe if I cut both ends and blow. (crew laughs) – Just don’t suck. (glow stick gurgles) – Hold on, is something happening? New glow stick, please. – I feel like maybe- – That didn’t work. – Before we get, it’s always more helpful to get the principle before you get the decoy. – Yes. – Stevie, what’s up? – Three points. – [Stevie] You’re look for a way to inflate the balloon without blowing it up yourself. – Okay. – Let’s just shake a Sprite and put a balloon on it. – But we need to get rid of three other things, so. Put it in there. We need a decoy. – Do I need the eye flush. – [Stevie] You do not need the glow stick. – Oh, yeah. – Yeah, she was like- – It’s probably non-toxic these days. Kids are crazy. – [Stevie] Well, I was told to tell you, don’t get it on your skin and don’t consume it, so you got it on your mustache- – So, in the eye is all right. – And your eye. – I mean, salt. Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh. It’s too late. Salt and Sprite makes a volcano. – No, no, no, I got it, I got it. I figure it out. Put salt in the balloon. – Oh! – I need you to put fingers in there, make a big hole for daddy’s salt. – And then turn that over into this. – Okay, so, okay, all right. At this point, you listen to me. You put, so you put it on there without turning it over. You just get it on there, don’t get any salt in it. Okay, so now, okay, now it’s good. Then we just take this and we just lift it like this. – Look at that, yes! Yes. – It’s gonna bust, it’s gonna bust. It’s gonna get all over the mic, don’t let it get on the mic, it’s Sprite. – It’s not gonna bust, it’s not gonna bust. Oh, look at it. Look at what we did. – Look, now there’s bubbles. (water bubbling) – You hear that noise? The Beaker Boys, this is the sound of winning. – We did it. (bell dings) – Did we do it? (crew cheers) – Man. – I’ll tell you, it came down to three points. I wanna thank Caitlin for having such a good attitude and I wanna thank Mikayla for being so darn cheap. Let’s see ’em. Let’s see our prize. – I wanna see if Caitlin did a better job than us. I wanna see if Caitlin’s balloon is bigger than ours. – Oh. (bright music) ♪ Children gather round Caitlin ♪ ♪ She’s gonna make a balloon get big ♪ – Ooh, ooh. – A little time ramp action.
