GMM 2837: Sonic Vs. Checker’s (Rally’s) | Food Feuds

Who does drive through best, Sonic or Rally’s? Let’s talk about that. Good Mythical Morning. When you wanna eat fast food, you usually have two options. Drive through or actually go inside and eat at the restaurant. What do you prefer? The drive through. ’cause I like the inside of my car to smell like french fries and Jack in The Box egg rolls. Yes. And I think a lot of people feel this way because. I don’t think these days anybody’s favorite place to eat a meal is inside of a fast food place. Only if I’m alone. Oh, yeah. And then for hours. That’s what gives today’s food feud an advantage among all the rest, they don’t even have an inside. Yeah. Sonic Drive-in is often overlooked in a fast food game, but it does have over 3000 locations across 47 states. And then there’s Rally’s or as I know them, Checkers. Yes. Drive in. With just under 800 locations across 29 states. You know, we could compare numbers all day, but why do that when we can compare the good stuff? It’s time for Food Feud, Sonic versus Rally’s. I, uh, I know that we’re supposed to do this thing, but I myself am really hungry. I don’t have any food back here, but it’s okay. I’m, I’m hungry for like, drive through history. Oh. It just was, oh. Oh. Don’t worry, Stevie, I’ll feed you. As the fast food industry continued to expand in the eighties and nineties, many brands turned to elaborately themed dining areas and play places to entice customers to stay longer and spend more. However, as ball pits plasticine trees and singing animatronic rodents spread across the nation, a few forward-thinking drive-through establishments refuse to follow the trend. Instead, these noble chains maintained a streamlined approach with no dining areas whatsoever, allowing them to focus on the food instead of the furniture. Our first chain today began as an Oklahoma root beer stand. In 1953 called The Top Hat when founder Troy Smith realized he could rig up speakers to help Diners order faster, business exploded, and he changed his restaurants named as Sonic to connote their signature blazing fast service. Oh, our second chain began as two separate brands in two separate states in the 1980s. Both founded by former Wendy’s franchise owner’s named James. James Patterson, not the author, realized he could double business at his local burger joint. By having two separate drive-throughs and entrepreneur, James Matay discovered he could sell more combo meals without a parking lot, taking up that extra space with similar first names and business strategies. These brands combined forces in 1999 to become one restaurant with two names, Checkers and Rally’s. But which of these two quick service kings is really the Cadillac of fast food? We’re putting them head to head and bumper to bumper to find out whose taters are tastiest when you’re traveling in your truck. Whose milkshakes are more mouthwatering when you’re munching in your minivan? Who is taking us on a joy ride and who needs to get off the road? Ooh, yes. Yes. Munching those minivans boys. Yes. Yes. Sorry. All right. You we’re bringing them in. You okay? Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. I feel satiated that calm me up. Um, first up we have chili cheese dogs. Ooh. Oh, okay. Alright. You were not okay. No, I’m, I’m fine. Don’t worry about it ’cause I got a backup. Oh. Interesting. Just to back up. Interesting. Uh, Rhett’s side is the Sonic Chili Cheese Coney Dog for 4.29, and on Link’s side is the Rally’s chili dog with cheese sauce also for 4.29. I really enjoyed that history because the thing about, I, I always thought about Checkers. Never, I don’t, I don’t think I’ve ever been to it, I don’t think I’ve ever been to one either. Is that it’s a double-sided drive through. It’s a double-sided drive through. And now there’s, there’s plenty of this. And now everybody’s doing that. Right. I like a chili dog. Now this one, it, I can tell that it’s sliced cheese. Slices of American cheese. Pulled apart and put on this puppy. Hmm hmm. You don’t know if you like it. I like it. No, I do like it. I’m just really trying to evaluate it. I really like the. American cheese is a good choice. The American cheese all over it. Chili’s a little weak. The chili is not nothing to write home about. It’s not doing too much heavy lifting. I’m not even, I’m not really tasting it. Okay. This one’s so much better looking than that one, but I got a split bun, man. You got the cheese whiz, or whatever they call it. Hmm. The chili. There’s a lot more front and center over here at Rally’s. Pretty comparable. It melds with the cheese, wiener wise. ’cause the cheese is so runny. Wiener wise, we’re on the same page almost. They got a bigger wiener, don’t they? Who’s got the bigger wiener? Ah, same size wiener. Yeah. I’m gonna take another bite of this one. So we’re one to 10 in each of these independently. He’s taking another bite. Mm-hmm. He’s not being shy about it. I really want to. But I know what else we got coming in terms of a chili dog. I don’t want the chili to be speaking too much. I don’t know. I think I do. I am gonna give this chili dog an eight seven, and I, I’m just really, you’re doing the Sonic A seven. I like the chili over here too, but the cheese just, I don’t like this cheese as much. I like the cheese less and the chili more. It completely balances it out. I’m gonna go with the seven over here as well. They’re both solid chili. I’m giving it a six. Alright, next up we have double bacon Cheeseburgers. On red side is the Sonic Super Sonic Bacon Double Cheeseburger for 7 99, and on link side is R’S Bacon Zilla for 8 59. So R’S has got a more attractive bun. It’s a little bit more of an attractively put together burger, but something about the messiness of that is very appealing. This looks like it’s been preserved, like they wanna put it under a counter. It’s got some very bright cheese, which they’re doing different things with their cheese at rallies. I mean, they just, this is just a melted mass. Oh, look at those Bacons though. Those bacons are just kind of hurting there in the middle. Hmm. Hmm. Burgers have gotten so good with what’s happening with smash burgers up. When you have a, you’re right. I mean, you had a smash burger last night. I did. I was a good boy. I didn’t have one, but coming off of a smash burger and then coming to this, this is not as good. It’s not bad at all. It’s very give. It’s good for what it is. Giving Burger King, it’s good for what it is, but Charbroil less Burger King. Okay, so what it’s giving, Hmm. So you got something on here called a mother cruncher. That is another thing that we don’t currently have. Okay. Hmm. It, it looks like, I don’t know, a breakfast sandwich. I don’t know why the bacon is more bacony. There’s so much bacon on it. It is crazy. I mean, look at that. You don’t need that much bacon. That’s way too much bacon. Um, you okay? Yeah. I didn’t mean to do it twice. That’s, that’s your second mug. That’s so weird. What are we gonna do? Well, I, I gotta back up. Oh. Oh, good. Oh, that’s a, that’s cool. That’s the thing that you say a lot. And it’s the thing you want to know when you’re drinking coffee. Yeah. Wow. This is so bacon heavy. They, the cheese and the sauce on the rally burger is actually, um, making me kind of happy. Uh, there’s so much, so much chicken juice. I mean, uh, cheese juice. It’s not the chicken one. Alright, what you gonna give this six? I’m gonna give it a six as well. I’m gonna take another bite of it. There’s a bit of a, like a kind of a homemade quality to it. It’s weird because it’s got a bumpy bun. I don’t know. This is tough. ’cause I think I like the taste of the rallies better. Me too. What did I give that? That six. Six. I’m gonna give this a seven. I am going with seven as well. Okay. It’s not incredible, but it’s just edging out the sonic. Yeah. Okay. Wow. This is a, this is a tight, tight race. Next up we have chicken tenders on red side, our sonic’s crispy chicken tenders for 5 99 for three pieces. And on link side our rallies fry seasoned tenders for 6 49 for three tenders. You also have ranch honey mustard and barbecue sauce from each establishment. I’m going sauce list To begin with, you said fry seasoned. Fry seasoned tenders. Interesting. I can definitely see a lot of. Pepper and these are really erratically shaped. I’m gonna, which is usually a good sign. Yeah, it is a good sign. I’m going into honey mustard, crunchy, soft on the inside. Not too chewy. It feels like it’s, the taste is not, it’s actual pieces of chicken for sure. Great. The taste is not really great. I think it tastes like the kind of chicken tenders that you get. Um. When you buy chicken tenders in a bag and, and yeah, like a frozen bag. Bake ’em in your, uh, oven, which is not horrible, but not what it could be. Alright, but now let’s try some of these. Whoa, I, what is that? I’m just trying to grab this wall. We are having so much trouble. Oh my. Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Oh, got it. I’m not gonna lose it. Oh. So now I’m going with honey mustard. Whoa. Saved it. Saved It didn’t go off. That was a close one. That was a real close one. Yep. Whoa. Oh my gosh. Oh, I’m just trying to drink it. You, you good? I’m great. Don’t worry. You have a mug now. Well, I got a backup. My backup to my backup. Whoa. What does that one say? Wouldn’t you like to know? So these have something on ’em. As Stevie pointed out, seasoning, they did a good thing, but they’re thicker. The number of times that I’m liking one thing about one and not liking something about it, and then liking something, but not liking something, the seasoning is good, but everything else about that I don’t like. Yeah. The consistency is not nearly as good as Sonic. They’re chewier. They what? They’re They’re chewier. They’re more pre, they preformed. They’re more, they’re more preformed. These are kind of a, I mean, look at that. They’re chickeny. It’s just a patty. And now I’m gonna try the barbecue. I’m gonna give Mason. Very sweet. A six. So I’m not su super excited about that, but this barbecue is so much better. Really? Mm-hmm. Their other two sauces are pretty much the same. Looking to fill my belly with that rallies. That’s an Outkast wine. I’m gonna give him an extra point because Outkast rapped about rallies. Mm-hmm. Alright, so I’m gonna give this. A six. That’s what I gave it. And I’m gonna give this a five. I’m also gonna give it a five. Not quite as good. Just not wowing us like we thought they would. Whoa. Whoa, huh. We got some. Yeah. Yeah. Should I talk about the mugs? Oh, sure. I have, I have so many backup mugs in case I do. What happened a lot today for some reason, and, uh, just one of those days. In fact, I have so many backup mugs that I’m putting them on sale in the mythical store. Can you go to mythical.com? I can do that. You can get your own backup mugs@mythical.com and they each have funny verbiage like this. We specialize in funny verbiage. What does that one say? Don’t talk to me until I’ve filmed my long running YouTube series featuring me and my childhood best friend, where we eat truly unbelievable things, explore surprising new products and trends, compete in original games with celebrity guests, implement serious experiments in hilarious ways and more. Well, that sounds like fun. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And uh, oh my God, what just happened? That was the last one. Those are the three. Uh, there’s not a fourth option. Yeah, but those three options are not joking. They’re seriously in the mythical store. It’s fry time. On red side are sonics groovy fries for 3 99 and on link side our rally’s famous season fries also for 3 99. Are they famous? Okay. Crinkly. Not, not, not good. Not my favorite. What else? Are they frying in? The same vat. It, i, it tastes like grease. They’re a little soggy and they’re not salty enough either. Um, not loving it, but let’s go over here now. I think I have had these before. It’s a seasoned fry crunchier. Oh man. See? They said that this is what, this is famous why they started putting it on their chicken fingers and it did help the chicken fingers, but it didn’t help enough. You know, it has a, um, a bo jangle seasoning kind of vibe to it. It’s not spicy, it’s not Cajun. But I do see what you’re saying. There’s a little, i, there’s a little something that happens in the sinus. That’s the closest I can approximate. These are good. Way better. These are good. You got like a seasoned fry, which is a particular thing, you know. I like how it gives it an extra crunch. It still leaves room for a good ranch dip. They’re really good. They’re a lot better than these. I gotta give these a, I don’t wanna get too crazy in the scoring on this round because they’ve been so close that I don’t want the fries to just be the ultimate. These are clearly better. But I don’t want it to be like, they’re so close. I don’t want to be like a seven point swing in one round. I have no clue what the score is or what we’ve scored. Anything. Everything has been very tight. That’s what I’m saying. So if you do the thing where you give one a zero and one a 10, well, I wanted to give that a two and I wanted to give this a seven, but now I’m gonna give this an eight. So you made it worse. And I’m gonna give that, I’ll give it a four. Um, they are bad. Four as well. Eight. I would typically go nine and three, but I’m going eight and four as well, which that may have done it. The, the fries alone. So four and eight may have done, may have done Sonic Inn. Sorry. So what does that put us? With another round. And finally we have milkshakes on Red side or Sonic’s Vanilla Classic Shake and Chocolate Classic Shake, each for 5 99. And on link’s side is Ralls Classic Vanilla Milkshake and Classic Chocolate Milkshake, each for 4 39. Okay, I wanna take a look at, oh, that their chocolate is really light. Really, really light color, but the chocolate here. It’s disturbingly dark. Uh, it’s, and there’s like syrup kind of like nestled at the top on mine. It’s, it looks like a frosty in there. I’m gonna go vanilla to vanilla and then chocolate to chocolate or that’s that a tick. Daddy, this chocolate tastes a lot better than it looks to me. That’s thick. That’s good Vanilla. Even thicker. Hmm. I think the chocolate over here rallies taste more creamy. It is. The sonic is much colder because it’s got more ice in it. That’s good. This is more like ice cream. The sonic vanilla is good in like a, go ahead. Go ahead. Put it down. Put it down. Um, so vanilla’s better over there. I said the chocolate was better, but the chocolate’s good over there. Chocolate has a very strong Hershey syrup taste to it, like chocolate syrup taste, which, so this is, this is, um, very, I don’t prefer that very, um, I like it to taste like chocolate ice cream. I actually like, oh yeah, the flavor of the vanilla better here. But this is just so ice creamy. You also get a lot more, I like the vanilla better from Sonic by taste, and I like the consistency of the rallies overall. Mm. So what am I gonna do? I think the taste wise, vanilla is about the same. Consistency’s better over here. Yep. I do not like such a syrupy taste on the chocolate. So consistency and taste across the board are better on the checkers and rally side. So for Sonic Five or Sonic, I’m giving Sonic a five over here. I think it’s an eight. I’m a green, it’s eight. The taste is, is better with chocolate and the consistency is better with both. I’m just believing in the ice cream of it all. It’s amazing. Oh, whoa. Add that. Why don’t you start? Do you have backups? I think I, I’m, there’ll be some that I won’t have to sell. Okay. Let’s see where that lands. Rally’s. HA 69, y’all did it. Has that ever happened before? You win just for that, but you also win because that’s 12 points higher than Sonic. I didn’t know that was gonna happen. I didn’t know it was gonna happen either. Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh, oh, oh. Ah, ah, ah, ah , ah, ah, ah, ah. I didn’t know that was gonna happen either. 69. Congratulations to Rally’s. You’re officially driving us wild and have won the chance to sponsor a future GMM episode. Let’s do it. Ha. Thanks for coming and sharing this video. You know what time it is. Hey, Rhett and Link, we’re Chenley and Clario from Charlotte, North Carolina.
