- What if we turn states into sandwiches?
- Let's talk about that.
(food squelches)
(catchy theme music)
- Good Mythical Summer.
- And can you believe it?
It is the very last day
of Good Mythical Summer.
- [Crew] Aw!
- I know, I know.
- But don't worry. Hey,
hey, hey, don't worry.
We still got two marathons
and a throwback episode
coming your way next week.
(crew cheers)
Yes, yes.
- Then we're gonna be
heading into season 30.
But enough about the future,
let's focus on the now, now.
- Yes.
And now is eating state
foods in sandwich form,
a weird game of baseball,
and a whole lot of fun.
(crew cheers)
- It's time for...
State Sandwich Sluggers!
(intense drum music)
Hey, dinner, dinner, dinner,
dinner, dinner, dinner,
dinner, dinner, dinner, dinner.
Swing!
- [Jenna] Thank you. Thank you, guys.
So, let's go through real
quick the ingredients
inside each sandwich
that we present to you,
represents one of the
50 states on the map.
- Uh-huh.
- [Jenna] After you try a
sandwich, you'll guess the state.
The closer you get to the correct state,
the further your players move
around that baseball diamond.
- Yup.
- [Jenna] And the person with the roast...
Roast runs.
- Roast!
- [Jenna] Rost muns.
- You gonna give out roses?
- [Jenna] The person with the roast muns
at the end of the game
wins a spot on the coveted
Heavy Hitter's Helmet,
and gets to add $6,000 to your charity.
- $6,000?
- [Jenna] 6,000!
- That's a lot.
- [Jenna] And this is the last
day to play, so batter up.
- Mhm.
(plates rustling)
- We have our first sandwich, cut in half.
- [Jenna] This first sandwich
is made up of a state staple,
a food grown in the state,
and a beverage founded in the state.
- [Link] A state staple.
- That's meat.
That's green peppers.
- And this is a soggy, soggy...
- But what's it soggy with?
I can almost taste it.
- I guess this is a green pepper.
It's not...
Spicy.
Boy, that's a good sandwich!
(crew laughs)
I love it.
- Not the bottom. Not the soggy bottom.
- [Link] That's soggy.
- [Jenna] Now Rhett, since
you didn't score any runs
the last game, you have the advantage.
- Thanks for rubbing that in,
Jenna, Jenna, Jenna, Jenna.
Okay. So, the staple is the beef.
The thing grown is the-
- The green pepper.
And if you let them grow
longer, they change color.
- Hmm.
(crew laughs)
Okay.
And...
- I don't know what that liquid is,
but it doesn't make the sandwich better.
I'm trying to just drink it off the plate.
- What did you say about the beverage?
- [Jenna] The beverage
was founded in the state.
- Founded?
- I think I might know
what the beverage is.
- Oh?
Do tell.
- I'm not going to.
- Okay.
- I'm not gonna tell you.
- You got something in your teeth.
- I also don't think
this is a green pepper.
- Yeah, it's really long, isn't it?
- And this is beef.
Beef is a staple of Texas.
- Cows, cattle.
- Cattle is a group of cows.
- But I don't think it
would just be a burger.
I think they would have done like
a brisket or something like that.
So, I feel like I have an inclination
as to what the liquid is,
and I have an inclination
that this is not a green pepper.
This is not...
Just so you know,
this is not strategic
in terms of this game,
because this state that I'm about to pick
doesn't have anything
bordering it on the left side.
Which means that if I'm wrong,
I'm gonna be very wrong,
but I'm gonna say California.
- California?
I think that that juice
is like apple juice.
I thought you were
going to start to hit me
with Washington State.
Okay, he doesn't think it's apple juice.
- I don't think it's apple juice.
I don't know...
But I have a guess as to what it is.
- It's acidic like that.
This long, green pepper
that's not a green pepper.
It seems to be more, I don't know.
The burger sends me Midwest,
because he's saying it's not apple juice.
Fine.
- I don't know.
I'm gonna go with Kansas.
Right in the middle.
- I think it might be Chardonnay, Link.
(crew laughs)
- It's not alcoholic though.
- And this is like a...
It's not a poblano, maybe it's a poblano.
- Well, tell us.
- They grow these in California.
- [Jenna] This sandwich represents...
Colorado.
- Ha!
- What?
- [Jenna] Rhett, you hit a single,
Link, you hit a triple!
- [Link] Boom! Look at that.
(Link laughs)
- [Rhett] You sucker.
- [Link] Run on around there.
Give him a kiss on first
base, then keep on going.
- [Rhett] Okay. Why is it Colorado?
- [Jenna] The burger is a bison burger.
- Oh.
- [Jenna] The green pepper
that you thought it was,
was actually a Pueblo chile.
- Yeah, okay.
- [Jenna] And the beverage is Coors.
- Ah, yes.
- Coors apple juice?
- The chardonnay of beers.
(Link laughs)
- Yeah, invented in Colorado.
- Wow, I didn't know that.
If I had known that was Coors,
it wouldn't have changed my answer.
To be honest with you.
(intense drum music)
(crowd cheers)
- [Jenna] This sandwich
is made up of a cookie
invented in the state,
a side from a popular chain,
and a popular food from the state.
- Wow. Another great sandwich.
(crew laughs)
Mm. I love it.
Especially with this weird cookie inside.
- Yeah, what do you call that, Link?
Is that a Newton of figs?
- A mistake.
Beans, fig newtons...
- Mac and cheese.
Okay.
(Rhett sighs)
(Link exhales)
(crew laughs)
I mean, I've got-
- Maybe it'd get better if it gets-
- I've got PTSD for not
getting a run last time.
Okay, I have my reasons
which I will explain,
but I'm gonna say Massachusetts.
- Really?
Mac and cheese...
Is it a pasta?
I don't typically think of it as a pasta.
That's why with mac and cheese,
I'm thinking like Midwest.
Not up there in the New England
states where they're like,
you know, where they're older states,
and they have more pasta.
(Link laughs)
(crew laughs)
And beans?
Crap it, crap it, crap it.
What chain has mac and cheese or beans?
I just think that Fig Newtons
are such a dorky cookie.
I'm going to go for a dorky state.
- Oh, here we go. Prepare
to offend someone.
- Mhm.
I better pick one that
not many people are from.
Uh, Indiana.
(crew laughs)
- Okay-
- Not dorky, but it's surrounded by dorks.
- I'm gonna tell you...
See what you think about this reasoning.
Boston baked beans, Boston Market.
- [Crew] Hm.
(hands thudding)
- Figs.
- Figs, just, I don't know.
- All right.
- Yeah, Boston baked beans.
- [Jenna] This sandwich represents...
Massachusetts!
- Yes!
(Jenna laughs)
- [Jenna] Rhett, you got a home run.
- You cracked the code.
- Oh, baby!
- [Jenna] And Link, you have struck out.
- Oh, yes!
There is a baseball god.
- And look at that, you're
bringing in your runner,
so you've got two big points.
- [Rhett] Two!
- [Jenna] And Rhett, you
really called that shot
'cause you're correct.
Those mac and cheese,
that was Boston Market.
- Yes!
And Fig Newtons were
made in Massachusetts.
- [Jenna] Invented, yep.
- See, that was pulling me west with you.
Figs are...
I thought that figs were the west.
Figs are the east.
Eh!
(intense drum music)
(crowd cheers)
Before we taste more sandwiches,
let me tell you about my
charity that I'm playing for.
I'm playing for Reading Is Fundamental,
the nation's leading
children's literacy nonprofit
that focuses on disrupting
the US literacy crisis.
- And I'm playing for the Los
Angeles Regional Food Bank.
They mobilize resources to fight hunger,
so that one day no one goes
hungry in Los Angeles County.
- [Jenna] This sandwich
features three foods
that were created in this state.
- It's a tall one.
- Created in the state.
- Mm.
And we got donut.
- [Link] Weird ice cream.
- [Rhett] What is that?
- Ugh.
(crew laughs)
What is that ice cream?
- I got blue cheese.
- Well, there's cheese.
- Yeah, but is it blue cheese?
This isn't blue cheese.
- "This isn't blue cheese."
(crew laughs)
What's your accent? (chuckles)
Hey, where you from? What's your accent?
- If I told you, you'd have your answer.
I already know.
What tastes so bad?
- Are you saying-
- The cheese tastes good.
- That cheddar cheese was invented here?
I can't believe that.
- The donut...
- Hmm.
- The donut tastes good.
- Well, Link, you're now
losing, so you get to go first.
- It is the ice cream that tastes bad.
Oh, God.
(crew laughs)
What is wrong with that ice cream?
- I think it might just be bad ice cream.
- Y'all gave us the bad ice cream.
Is that a hint?
(Link grunts)
- Where was bad ice cream invented?
- So, this donut is not like
a cronut, I don't think.
It's not anything...
It doesn't seem that special of a donut.
So you're saying donuts
were invented in this state?
- That's a bold claim.
- [Jenna] Uh...
- [Rhett] Oh, no, maybe
this type of donut was.
- That ice cream has blue cheese in it.
(crew laughs)
I don't care if you're laughing.
It's true.
There's like mold-
- I think it was touching cheese.
- There's mold in the ice cream.
There's just some nastiness
all in this ice cream.
It's horrible!
I mean, cheddar cheese is
gonna take me to Wisconsin,
but I bet you it's not Wisconsin.
But I'm gonna try to
hedge my bet a little bit
and go with Iowa.
(Rhett clears throat)
You know anything about
the donut? 'Cause...
- I believe that you were right
when you said it was a cronut,
because it's got a flakiness to it.
But that doesn't help me.
The only thing that helps me
is I would have just assumed
that cheddar cheese was
invented in Wisconsin.
I think the ice cream is just ice cream.
(crew laughs)
And I'm just like, dairy.
We got dairy upon dairy.
And maybe at like the
Milwaukee State Fair in 1999,
they invented the cronut
or something like that.
- Could be.
- I was gonna go to Illinois
if you went to Wisconsin,
but since you went to Iowa,
I'm gonna go to Wisconsin.
- [Jenna] This sandwich represents...
Oregon.
- What?
(crew laughs)
- [Jenna] So, you both struck out.
- [Rhett] What?
- [Link] Nobody gets to move!
- [Jenna] Nobody gets to move!
- Okay, well, tell us about
this blue cheese ice cream.
- [Jenna] Yes, that blue cheese
ice cream, you are correct.
It's pear and blue cheese.
You know, from the brand that's
known for unique flavors,
Salt & Straw.
- Oh!
- Oh!
- [Jenna] Created in Oregon.
- Yeah, you know what?
Maybe the reason I didn't
taste it is because
I actually like it, and I get this.
I was like, I'm not sensitive to it.
- You didn't even taste it.
It's the worst ice cream I've
ever eaten in my entire life.
(Jenna laughs)
I mean...
- I thought I was
tasting cheese proximity.
- I applaud their
inventiveness, but the result.
- And they invented cheese?
- [Jenna] The cheddar cheese
was created by Tillamook
in Oregon.
- And is this a donut or a cronut?
- [Jenna] And that donut was made by...
Voodoo Donut, created in Oregon.
- So Voodoo was created
in Oregon, not donuts.
- [Jenna] Yes.
- Okay. Dagnabbit!
We could've known that
about the donut, but-
- But we didn't.
- We're sitting here both in our dugouts.
- Yeah. "Hey."
- "Hey."
- "Next time, coach."
Manager, actually. (chuckles)
(intense drum music)
(crowd cheers)
- Over on our Mythical Society,
we release vlogs where we
share aspects of our lives,
and passions and
interactions and adventures.
- Oh.
- I posted a blog over there exclusively
on the Mythical Society,
inviting you into my world
of record collecting.
So if you're into that, my musical taste,
or the records themselves,
or just the paper they're printed on.
And the...
I was gonna say the rubber
that it's pressed on.
Yeah, my records are rubber.
- He got rubber records.
(crew laughs)
- I'm sitting here trolling myself.
- They're not fragile.
- Go to mythicalsociety.com.
- All right.
(plates rustling)
- [Jenna] This sandwich has a
popular meat from the state,
a sweetener invented,
and a cocktail also
invented in this state.
- Okay, that's a big steak.
(Rhett coughs)
Doesn't have to be cow.
- That sweetener is-
- Nasty.
It's all over it. Ew.
"Um, my steak doesn't have
enough artificial sweetener.
I'm sending it back."
(Link chuckles)
- Okay.
- Where's the cocktail?
- [Rhett] In the bottom.
I think I know what the cocktail is.
- Good God. Look at all that sweetener.
Sweet'N Low.
Stevia.
(Link spits)
(crew laughs)
God!
- It was nasty enough!
- It's so nasty.
Ew.
Who on earth would try
to do that to sugar?
The steak is sending me into the Midwest,
but who doesn't like steak?
- Yeah.
- The cocktail is sending me further east.
Actually, all the way to Virginia.
I don't know why I'm thinking that,
so I'm going to split the
difference and go with Missouri.
- Well, I think the
cocktail's a Bloody Mary.
- I agree.
It's got the tomato in it.
- But that doesn't do anything for me.
I mean-
- Nope.
- Meat, again, like
you said, it's like....
- Who doesn't love meat? Am I right?
- There's a lot of cows in Texas,
but there's a lot of cows
all there in the middle
of the United States, as you pointed out.
So I'm going for-
- Well, you can't take Missouri.
- A state that has like invented things,
because I think it's like
Sweet'N Low or something.
I don't want to nestle
up again next to you,
but I'm gonna try Illinois again.
Even though did I not do that last time?
I'm doing Illinois.
- [Jenna] This sandwich represents...
New York.
- [Rhett] Oh!
- [Link] New York. You're closer.
Is it close enough?
- [Jenna] You have both struck out.
- [Rhett] Dang it!
- [Link] Struck out again!
- One more!
If I'd have gone to the
dorky state of Indiana,
I would have gotten a single.
- What is that heinous, to use the word,
whiteness on that steak?
- [Jenna] You both said
it. It was Sweet'N Low.
- [Rhett] Sweet'N Low. Yeah.
- [Jenna] Uh-huh. Invented in New York.
The steak was a New York strip steak.
- Oh, of course!
- Oh!
- We've gotta get better
at this game, man!
- We gotta get better at this.
- Because it's just
like, this makes sense.
It's a strip, we knew that.
We cut it in half, that was our problem.
(intense drum music)
(crowd cheers)
- [Jenna] This sandwich
includes the state dessert,
a popular sweet, and a
condiment invented in the state.
- Well, that's barbecue sauce.
- Oh, gosh. I was
thinking it was chocolate.
(crew laughs)
- Um...
- Mm.
- An ice cream cone.
- Is the style of barbecue
sauce used strategic?
- [Jenna] Correct.
(crew laughs)
- All right.
- What is this dessert? It's very good.
- [Link] The state dessert
is an ice cream cone?
- No, the state dessert is that
thing you got in your hand.
Taste it and you'll like it.
I think.
- Well, it's got too much of that nasty...
- Get the part that doesn't
have barbecue sauce on it.
- Mm.
- That's like a butter cake
is what I would call that.
- Mm.
- Where does that come from?
- Yeah, like a ooey gooey bar
is what I call that stuff.
- Mhm.
- Ooey gooey bar, and an ice cream cone.
- All right, Link, you're still up.
- I think that all ice cream cones...
Like if anything ice cream cone related,
it just feels like if
that's the state dessert,
then we're talking a hot place.
But every place gets hot
at a certain time of year,
so that's a dead end.
The ooey gooey sweet treat.
There's got to be a pun in here.
There's got to be something
that really gives a state.
And then, who invented barbecue sauce?
Well, probably someone who
really is big into barbecue.
This type of barbecue is like,
I would say Kansas City style.
I'm gonna go back to Kansas.
- Well, I'm gonna go to Missouri,
because that's where Kansas City is.
(crew laughs)
- Well, hold on. Why did they do that?
(Rhett laughs)
- I was gonna go Missouri the whole time
and when you said Kansas
City, it was like,
"Oh crap, he's gonna go Missouri."
And then you said Kansas.
(Link laughs)
- Kansas City is not in Kansas.
That's so stupid.
- Well, I think, actually...
Isn't some of Kansas City in Kansas?
- See?
- But most of Kansas City is in Missouri.
So, let's see who's closer.
(crew laughs)
- So I just got less stupid?
Is that what just happened?
- Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I'm protecting you over here.
- [Jenna] This sandwich
represents Missouri.
- Yeah!
(Rhett laughs)
- [Jenna] Rhett, you hit a home run!
But link, you got a triple!
You're on the board.
- [Link] Okay, so you've
got three points now.
I'm bringing my runner in,
so I am not far behind you.
- [Rhett] You're not.
- [Link] With...
What?
- Well, you have one run and man on third.
- [Link] One point,
but somebody is waiting
to come in there if I get another triple.
- [Jenna] The popular
sweet was the butter cake.
- Yeah.
- [Jenna] The dessert was the cone.
And yeah, the barbecue sauce
is a Kansas City barbecue sauce.
- Yeah.
- It was very-
- The state dessert is just a cone.
- [Jenna] It's just a cone.
- No! (laughs)
I mean...
- How could that be?
- This type of cone.
- [Jenna] I don't know.
Someone from Missouri get in the comments
and tell us what's up with that.
- You should try ice cream in the cone.
- They're already there.
That whole Kansas City
thing, they're already there.
(intense drum music)
(crowd cheers)
- [Jenna] This sandwich
contains two popular foods,
and a staple crop grown in the state.
- Uh-oh.
(Link grunts)
(crew chuckles)
- Taffy.
(Link spits)
(crew chuckles)
What did we spit out? That meat?
(Rhett laughs)
- That meat, that meat, that meat.
- Ugh.
How could that be a popular food anywhere?
Uh...
I mean, is that liver?
Let's see.
It's three to one.
As long as I get someone on base,
I can still win-
- Yup.
- With a home run in the next one.
So taffy, lima beans...
Or what I would call butter beans,
which I think are the same thing.
Taffy, and like...
Some haggis tasting nastiness.
- Yeah, go to Scotland.
Say Scotland.
- Um, Scotland is not
an American state, but-
- Oh, not yet. (laughs)
- Falkland Islands are, if you ask us.
Saltwater taffy.
I think you got to be on the coast,
but I'm not gonna go too hard with that.
Liver...
Who loves liver? Or
whatever the crap that is?
It's like a liver pate or something.
Lima bean crop.
Crop, crop, crop.
All right.
So we're still in the
bread basket of America.
I'm looking right there in the middle.
You can grow some butter
beans in North Carolina.
I don't know, maybe it is more southern.
I think so.
You know what? I'm thinking...
The south.
I'm thinking South Carolina.
- Dang, I was hoping you were
not gonna go to the south.
Lima beans...
I mean, I grew up, not grew
up, I was born in Georgia,
and I always thought that lima
beans were a Georgia thing,
because the way my
parents talked about them.
Liver like this, this fried liver?
- So bad.
- Very much a southern thing.
Saltwater taffy, the
whole coast of it all.
I mean, I was thinking Georgia.
- Maybe go with New Mexico.
- Before you said South Carolina.
- [Link] So I'm gonna say Georgia.
- [Jenna] This sandwich
represents Delaware.
- What?
- Delaware? How far away is that?
(crew laughs)
- [Jenna] Well, it's too far away.
- Delaware's got butter beans?
Well, the saltwater taffy of it all
is more of a northeast thing, isn't it?
- [Jenna] Yes, yeah. Although, yeah.
I was hoping one of y'all would
say Virginia or something.
- Well, what kind of liver is this?
- [Jenna] That is not liver.
It's called scrapple.
Which is a breakfast meat
made from pork scraps,
cornmeal and spices, and
then pan-fried crispy.
- Yeah, and those scraps include liver.
I'm telling you that right now.
- Yes, definitely.
- [Jenna] It just says scraps,
it doesn't say what kind of scraps.
- Ugh.
- Well, dang it. Well, dang it.
(intense drum music)
(crowd cheers)
- [Jenna] This final sandwich is made up
of the state vegetable, a
condiment made in the state,
and a popular dessert.
- [Link] Sweet, hot, tatery.
- That's a hot sauce.
- All right.
I've just got to save face to try to...
Best I can do is tie.
All right, sweet potato.
At least it appears to be so.
What is this...
What is this sweet little nut treat here?
Hmm.
Hmm.
Condiment made in the state.
Born and raised here.
(Link knocks)
North Carolina.
I think that North Carolina's-
- [Rhett] You think that's Texas Pete.
- State vegetable is the sweet potato.
I don't know for that for sure,
but Texas Pete's made in
North Carolina, not in Texas.
- Well...
- And this...
So I'm going to block you
out from North Carolina.
Were you thinking that?
- Because I think that's Texas Pete. Yeah.
I was thinking Georgia
because I think that
the sweet potato is the
vegetable of Georgia,
but it might be also the
vegetable of North Carolina.
This is that pecan...
It's not pecan brittle, but it's pecan.
- It's good, whatever it is.
We'll find out.
- [Rhett] I'm gonna say Georgia.
- [Jenna] This sandwich represents...
Louisiana.
- What?
(Jenna laughs)
- [Rhett] Well...
- [Link] What about our state?
- [Jenna] So you both
have hit singles though.
- [Rhett] Oh, it's Crystal hot sauce.
You were incorrect on that as well.
It's Louisiana Hot Sauce.
- It's just Louisiana Hot Sauce.
- Oh, so good on fried chicken.
- [Jenna] And it was pralines.
- [Rhett] Pralines.
That's the name we were looking
for that we could not find.
I love them.
- [Rhett] And that makes the final score
Rhett with three runs, and Link with one.
- Woo-hoo!
(Link claps)
- [Jenna] So Rhett,
you are today's winner,
so go ahead and plant
that face on the coveted
Heavy Hitter's Helmet.
- Oh yeah, I will.
Yep, right there.
Right there.
More to come. (laughs)
- [Jenna] And with that, Rhett,
you get 6,000 for your charity as a prize,
and that brings the Good Mythical Summer
Charity Competition to an end.
Yay!
(crew laughs)
Here are your final totals.
Rhett, you earned $31,900
for Reading Is Fundamental.
- Nice.
- [Jenna] And Link, you earned $34,700
for the LA Regional Food Bank.
- Link wins the Mythical Summer!
(Link laughs)
- How did that happen?
I would like to thank
everyone who believed in me,
and now I'm done.
(Rhett laughs)
- Hey, reminder that we've
still got some marathons
and throwback episodes
coming your way next week.
- And then September 7th will
be the premiere of season 30
of Good Mythical Morning.
And we're back to our regular schedule
of Monday through Friday episodes.
- Thanks for being your Mythical Best.
- You know what time it is.
- Hi, my name is Jack.
And this is my little brother
Lincoln, but we call him Link.
It is currently summer
vacation in New York!
It's time to spin the
Wheel of Mythicality.
- [Kid] Really?
(Rhett laughs)
- Jack and Lincoln.
(ink laughs)
You boys are gonna grow up,
you're going to watch that back,
and you're going to be like,
"Man, remember that show?"
And be like, "Yeah, we still watch it,
'cause we're still doing it."
- And right now we're gonna
give some unsolicited advice
to Anna Mae, okay?
You are wondering if you
should join the Coast Guard.
- Uh...
Learn to swim first.
(crew laughs)
- Join us in Good Mythical More
to see if we can actually,
finally beat the Impossible Quiz.
- Yes!
