- Should these exotic snacks be sold on American shelves? - Let's talk about that. (bright music) "Good Mythical Morning." - There are so many snacks on American shelves, but I still can't help but wonder, what about the snacks that aren't on American shelves? Are there any other snacks in other countries that are so attuned with the American palate, unexpectedly attuned that they should be a staple at the average American grocery store? - Well, that is exactly what we're here to figure out today, but we're self-aware guys. We know we've been living- - Why is that funny? - Yeah, we're self-aware. We know that we've been living in LA for a while and that we can't claim to represent all of America. So we're calling in some help to make sure we get it right. Dad, welcome to the show. - You called the right person. Yes, you did. - Are you currently in America? - I'm in America, but I'm on the wonderful East Coast instead of the West Coast. - Okay. - Okay. - It seemed like you were throwing some shade. - We got some claps for East Coast in here. - Myrtle Beach represent. Dad, you have all of the exotic candies that we're going to try today, so you have a vote in this alongside us. - Well, that excites me that I get a vote, whether I like it or y'all like it or I don't. So that's pretty good. - All right. - And I think for one of these snacks, you have the power to overturn us completely. So if you really are like, "I believe in this thing," or, "I really don't believe in this thing," regardless of what we say, you can overrule. - But I just get to do that one time? - Just one time. - Yeah, one time. - Oh, man. - So choose wisely. - Okay, Brittany, what do we have first? - [Brittany] All right. Hello, you three. First up, you have Pica Fresa from Mexico. It's a chili strawberry flavored gummy. - Ooh. - A chili straw. - Hold on. In the episode where we put flavors together, we put strawberry and hot sauce together and discovered that it was an incredible thing. Ha ha! - I'm still not quite remembering it. I do remember it, yes. - It was the first one. - So now this is the candy-fied version, were you saying they watched the episode and put this into production? - Yes. Apparently that is what's happened. That is the only explanation for why this snack exists. - Dad's chomping already. - Mm. Man, I like strawberry. - How about that little spice in there? - Yeah. I like spicy too. - Man. - Man. - Man. I like strawberry too. - Now. - It's not spicy as much as tangy, but, you know, it does that thing where it like, starts to tingle the back of your jaw. - But it's not a springy gummy. It's a chewy gummy that kind of gets caught in your teeth a little bit. I though that you might have a negative reaction to that. - I am managing to keep it out of the molars. - Okay. So taste-wise, I feel like my opinion is, I think Americans might be ready for this. - It's not too spicy yet. - Tagline, I am strawberry fine. I am strawberry fine. - I am strawberry fine. - We might have to alter that a little bit. I don't know. Maybe we like that. Do we like that? How do you feel about that tagline, Charles? - Well, it was strawberry good and I think strawberry fine might work pretty good to me. I mean, you know, I'm not much on gummies, don't like them, don't eat them much, but I would buy a bag of these. - Oh, wow. He's not even a gummy lover and he's already berry fine with them. - I think the reason they got me is because it's got the strawberry, but it's got a little kick to it. - And the logo has pigtails. We know how much you like pigtails on a strawberry. I think we're ready to vote. - [Brittany] All right. - Obviously. - Is this just like a gladiator? - [Brittany] Yeah. We're going to give a thumbs up or a thumbs down on my count. Ready Charles, in three, two, one. - Okay. - No surprises here. - [Brittany] All right, unanimous. - Wow. - [Brittany] This is going on American shelves. - Okay. - Everywhere. - [Brittany] All right, so let's bring in the next snack. This is a Tao kae noi big roll from Thailand. It's a grilled seaweed roll and this particular variation is their spicy squid flavor. - Okay, all right. We got some hills to climb here. - Grilled seaweed rolled. Spicy grilled squid flavored. - I like the security level of this packaging. I mean, look at this. It feels like you're trying to conceal something from TSA. It's got like a metal foil. - What do you know about that? Concealing stuff from TSA? - Nothing. I don't know anything about it. Yeah, like sending something to space wrapped in gold, you know, to stop the radiation. Wow, look at that thing. It's like a cigarette. - Hey, is this something supposed to be good for you, seaweed roll? - Yeah, I think it's good for you. - It says tasty and easy, but it doesn't say good for you. - Wow, they've really dug. This is an engineering marvel. Look at that. - What does it mean for something to be tasty and easy? - I'm going to go in. - There's no way dad's going to like this. (people laughing) Yeah. Yeah. - He's tapped out. So you love it, huh? - As far as I'm looking, this one sucks. (people laughing) - I can't believe you're eating another bite, dad. - Well, I want to be fair about it, but. - I ate the whole thing because- - I hate seaweed. - This is like, you know the little sheets of seaweed that you can get? - So bad. - It's a better version of that. It's spicy. It's a little fishy. It's a little sweet. But I think I'm going to be out of it here. - I might have to take a break and go get a cold beer after eating that. - Beer break. - Yeah, yeah. You need a palate cleanser big time, dad. - [Rhett] I think anything called big roll that comes in something like this, if it was going to make it into just your typical American gas station shelf or grocery store shelf, I think it just has to be a big tube of meat. You know what I'm saying? I don't think we graduated beyond meat tubes here. I'm sorry. We're just not ready for it. - Uh-uh. - Well, Rhett, I know where they screwed up. Seaweed might have been all right, but when they put squid in it, boy, they screwed it up. - [Rhett] Okay. - For sure. - No, the seaweed is the problem, dad. - All right. Well, okay. Last maybe Hail Mary here. Do we think the fact that it's tasty and easy, does that have any impact on the way you feel about it? - That makes no sense. - Okay. All right, okay. - None at all. - Forget I said it. - Easy to open? Easy to eat? I guess it's easy. - I mean, I ate it. - It's easier than it is tasty. - Okay, I'm ready. - [Brittany] All right. Give a thumbs up or down in three, two, one. - Okay I liked it, but I don't think Americans will like it. So I'm going to give it a thumbs down because it's not whether or not we just like it. It's, do we think it's acceptable? - [Brittany] All right. Let's bring in the next snack. - Oh God, that's the worst. - [Brittany] Pacoquinha from Brazil. It's a traditional Brazilian candy made with ground peanuts, sugar, and salt. - All right. You have me at peanuts. - Well, Link, this would be a good one for me to pronounce on "Dispatches." - [Link] Yep. So dad, go ahead and plug the show. Go all the way. Tell people about your podcast. - "Dispatches from Myrtle Beach" with Charles Neal and my son Link. Pacoquina, or what? - Yeah, try again. - There's something under the sea. There's like, some sort of symbol under the sea. - Pasacoquina. Ha. - Brittany, is he right? - [Brittany] He nailed it. - Pasacoquinaga. - Oh my God. This is gross. Ugh! It's really lightweight. It's a formed, airy... - [Rhett] It's very fragile too. - [Link] What is this? Did you put the whole thing in your mouth, dad? - Every bit of it. - Oh yeah, peanut. - Yeah. - Yeah. - Taste wise, it's pretty good. It's peanut and then what is that? What else is in it? - [Brittany] Ground peanut sugar and salt. It's very simple. - [Rhett] It's basically dehydrated peanut butter into a little plug shape. - I don't like the plug nature to it. - So you have a form factor issue with this. - It makes me uncomfortable. - You don't think Americans like plugs? - It's not pretty in any way. - [Speaker] What if we call it a nut plug? Do you think Americans would go for that? - Nut plug at your local grocery store? - Dad, you like that? Do you like that name nut plug? - I don't know. I'm eating another one. - Yeah, I'm on that second one too. - I'm ready to vote. - [Brittany] All right. - Because I'm disappointed. - Well, I think we just have to, - It's too sweet. - [Rhett] I think we got to work on the branding a little bit. - It looks ugly and gross and it tastes fine, just fine. The best thing is the butt plug idea. - [Brittany] I can't wait to see how you vote. - I mean a nut plug. - Nut plug. - I called it a nut plug. I'm sorry. - [Brittany] Okay. Three, two, one. - Nope. - Yeah, this one's coming to America! - [Brittany] All right, finally, we have a snack going on American shelves that you don't all agree on. - Yes. - Yeah. I mean, you guys got so thrown off by that seaweed log that you forgot your principles. This does not meet our peanut standards. - [Brittany] I would like to try it. - I like it. - Well, I think for, hey, for something where you can throw in the car or the truck when I go to work and I need a little peanut butter pickup. - Peanut butter pick me up. - [Brittany] Yeah. I think peanut butter pickup is the way to go. Let's bring in the next snack. - Plug me up. Peanut butter plug me up. - [Brittany] Peanut butter plug me up. Let's bring in, these are Vegemite and cheese flavored Shapes from Australia. So Shapes is a brand of cracker, and this is just one of the flavors it's available in. - Shapes! - Dad, what do you know about Vegemite? Have you ever had it? - Absolutely not. - Well, what's your favorite shape? - I can't even get in the box. - He can't think about what his favorite shape is until he gets the box open. - Well, I'll be honest with you. I don't know what shape that is. - I think it's Australia. - Oh, that's Australia. - Yeah, it is. Look at that. - Is that supposed to be a kangaroo? - It's the actual country. - Every single one of them. Every single one of them is shaped like Australia. Okay. All right. - I don't know. After eating that peanut butter thing and... - Vegemite is the Australian peanut butter. Got to keep that in mind. Also, whenever you eat Vegemite, we always eat way too much and we hate it. - This is a hint. - It's really just a hint. - I kind of like it. - I agree. - You got the cheesiness, but then you have like a little savoriness. How do you feel about this? - Not bad at all. Given all the Vegemite stuff, I really can't taste any Vegemite. - But correct me if I'm wrong, Vegemite- - So what is Vegemite? Y'all got to explain that to me. - I think it's like a byproduct of making beer or something? - When a termite has sex with a vegetable. - Yeah. - [Brittany] It's that, and it's a brewer's yeast extract with salt and malt extract. So it's just a food spread that Australians put on toast or whatever they want. - Very salty. - [Rhett] So they started putting it on everything and it has not translated to America. There's no major snack. People will have it at their house if they've been on a trip to Australia or whatever. And they'll eat it for a couple of weeks after they get back from their trip. - And then they'll push it. - Then they'll stop and it'll go to the back of the cupboard. - Further and further back in the pantry. - And then they'll like, three years later, they'll be, "Oh yeah, remember that trip to Australia?" The American palate isn't ready for it, but this cracker with cheese flavor, this might be the way to usher it in. If it's going to happen, it's going to happen at some point, right? Maybe it's going to be through Shapes. - Link, you know what I'm going to say about this, because I ain't crazy about cheese, no way. - [Rhett] Oh. - He ain't crazy about cheese, Vegemite. Didn't even know what that was. - [Charles] That would be correct, I'm telling you. - All right. Are you ready to vote? - But you've got a really good Aussie accent. Let's hear it. - [Rhett] Oh, that's true. - I got a really good Aussie accent? - Yeah. - That was it. - What? What? Give us some more. Tell us how you're going to vote. - I've got a really good Aussie accent? - Yep, yep. - All right. I'm ready. - [Brittany] Wow, that was good. Let's vote in three, two, one. - Okay. - All right, we overrode you. - I'm pulling for this one. I'm going to take these home. - I think you made a compelling argument, but it just doesn't taste significant enough. - I know, but you got to get it subtle. - Oh. - You start them on a little bit. You know what I'm saying? - All right. Well, I'll change my answer. - [Charles] Rhett. - I'll change my answer. - Oh, really? - [Brittany] Wow. So then, all right, we've got two out of three. Charles, you do have the opportunity to override if you really don't want this snack on American shelves, because they're bringing it. - How many more we got? - He's playing strategy. - I'm saving that. I'm saving that. - [Brittany] All right. - All right, you won me over. It's going to American shows. - Let's put this one on here. - [Brittany] Let's pull in that snack. - I'm putting mine back in the box and I'm going to mail it back to you so you can eat some more of them. - Smash. - [Brittany] This is Smash from Norway. Rhett and Link, you've actually tried these before in international chocolate snacks years ago. - [Rhett] Oh yeah, they're chocolate covered bugles. - [Brittany] Yeah. These are essentially chocolate covered bugles. - Mine's already open over here. - Sot, salt and sprock. - Now mine's just kind of been, it's merged. It's merged into one monolith that then you have to like, pick stuff off of. - Well, mine sat out on the porch too long. - Yeah, ours too. - [Speaker] Maybe that's why it's called Smash. You're supposed to take it out of the bag and smash it. - Very milky chocolate. That is the milkiest of chocolates. And then you got the saltiness inside of there. - [Rhett] We're gonna want to clean this up because we don't want ants here. Because I'm just going to put chocolate on the ground, just note to self and y'all. - You got to feed the ants, Rhett. - Why? Because they're living things. - [Brittany] Link, when you tried these in International, you said anybody would love this. Do you stand by that? - Anybody would love this. That's exactly what I was still thinking. I'm definitely going an up vote for it. - You can put chocolate on almost anything and it'll make it good. - Mhm. - This one feels easy. - I was going to throw that in my mouth. That's how far off I was. It stuck to my hand a little bit. All right. - Going to the ants? - Feeling good. Yeah, I threw it in. - [Brittany] Ready to vote in three, two, one. All right. - We need more Smash in our lives. - [Brittany] Unanimous. - Every single day. - All right. Are we being too generous? - No! - [Brittany] I don't think so. - They need to make sure that they have something on the bag to keep it cool. - Yeah, it needs to be sold with a little piece of dry ice. - Yeah, it needs to be sold in ice packs. All right, we want to promote our new Mythical Halloween collection. We're bringing our A game this Halloween with some spooky stuff that you can wear. - All kinds of stuff. - You can use in your kitchen. - We've got the cauldron hoodie that I'm currently wearing. We got two T-shirts with us. - Check out this T-shirt. - Some creepy characters there. - [Link] That is some creepy versions of us there. - In black and purple. - That one's on the back. And then this one is right here on the front. - Oh, front design. - Of this one. We got some chip clips for you. Keep your chips nice and clipped. And a "Last Meals" tea towel set. - And don't forget the mug that you've been drinking. - Oh, crap. Look at that mug. This mug is glow-in-the-dark. - This is the whole collection, guys. - Go over to mythical.com. Are we saying mythical store yet? - We're saying mythical.com. - Yeah, we are. Mythical.com. - [Brittany] All right. Your next snack is Dubbelzout, A.K.A double salt licorice. So this is the type of licorice that is very popular in the Netherlands. - [Link] Of course it is. - Now, soft licorice, unsalted, soft licorice has a foothold in America already, like the Australian style. But this like Scandinavian style, oh wow. It's got a strong smell. Even I can recognize that. Smells like somebody just took a sock off. - God, really. It's very sour, almost. - I don't even want to put this in my mouth. - Wow. Man. I kind of like it though. - It's feet. - At first you hate it, but then you start loving it. - No, dad's had it in his mouth for a while. He took it out. - I don't know if the ants will come after this one. - It is so salty, extremely salty. - It's terrible! - It says DZ on it. What do you think DZ stands for, dad? - Something disastrous. - And it doesn't get better the more you eat it. - How do you feel about black licorice in general, Charles, like if it was like soft black licorice? You like that? - I would eat some strawberry licorice. - [Rhett] Yeah. But it's not really licorice. - It's right here. You like it or you just like the torture of it? - Especially now that it's been in my mouth for a while and I've chewed it up and stuck in my teeth, I'm really enjoying myself. - But you're enjoying yourself because it's like a pain? - I want to do this. I just want to get the taste. I don't know. I like the taste, but I recognize that it's off-putting, but I also, I like it at the same time. I don't know. I got two sides of my brain, but I understand that this is going to be a really tough sell, so I'm not going to foist this on the American people. - [Brittany] Ready to vote? - Who knows, though? Let's vote to make sure. We can change our minds. - [Brittany] Three, two, one. All right. - Big down. Big, big down. - We're not ready for this. - Even Rhett's voting it down. What kind of world are we living in? - And I'm voting it, whatever my vote was, to get rid of something, I want to get rid of this for good and I don't even want to... - [Brittany] Well, you had a veto. - Hold on, but we both said no to it. You want us to remove it from set. - Yeah. I'm telling you. I don't even want any, hey, it's so bad. I can't even think about what I want to say. (people laughing) - I think, give me that back. So dad, you want us to go to, where's this from, Norway? You want us to go to Norway? - [Brittany] Sorry, Netherlands. - You want us to go to the Netherlands and eradicate this from their land as well? - That would be a good thing to do. - [Link] All right. We now have a mission. - [Rhett] That's quite a foreign policy. - We're going to send you to do that. - [Brittany] Well, I do have to say it was a veto, so I think legally speaking, Charles just put on American shelves. - I know. I think he did the opposite. - [Brittany] Okay, so your final snack is Nongshim Banana Puffs from Korea. The brand describes it as a cultural icon in Korea. - Okay. Banana puffs. Now we like bananas around here. Who's got a banana in their house right now? Charles, do you have a banana in your house right now? - Hey, I just ate one with some peanut butter on it. - See? We love bananas. You got bananas in your house? - If we do, I don't notice them. I'm banana blind. - You're banana blind? - Yeah. - Why? - I just don't need them. I don't need them. I don't hate them, but I don't need them. Banana flavored things, I'd rather have watermelon, almost. That's accurate. - It's got that banana flavor flavor. You know, banana flavor and banana flavor flavor are two different things. - Yeah. - And banana flavor flavor, I still like, even though it doesn't taste exactly like bananas. - And then the corn comes up from underneath and you do taste that. - And corn and bananas, from a distance, if I saw somebody eating a banana from a quarter mile away, it could have also been a corn cob. You know what I'm saying? - Except for how you put it in your mouth. I mean, you put a corn cob in your mouth. - No, I eat my bananas like this. - Well, then that's what's confusing. - Well, it's pretty neat. They got banana in it and they kind of shape like a banana with a little crook on. - Banana powder, is that in it? - Dad likes the shape. - It's got actual banana powder. - It's like a cereal. Like corn puff with a fruit flavor. - I found the problem. - It feels like it should be in a bowl. - I found a problem, Charles. - I think maybe we need to get some milk and pour it in this bag. - I found a problem though. - Okay. - Despite the fact that we recently hosted the World Cup, I can just say that amongst my friends, we don't care about soccer anymore. We cared about it for a couple of months, and now we've forgotten that it's a thing. - [Link] Right. - [Rhett] And so now we don't even know what that ball is anymore. And so I think we're going to have to change this to a football. - Oh no, no. But see on the back, it says banana kick. Oh, it says that on the front too. That's what it's called. - That's the name of it. - That's a soccer move. - Yeah, but I'm just saying we're going to have to call it a football and we're going to have to create a banana kick in the world of football. Okay, let's see. Pour it in there. Is this half and half or just straight milk? - [Link] Dad, is that enough? - That's enough. - Okay. All right. - Okay. - We're done with that. - No, we can pour it back in there when we get done with it. - All right, dad. This is your idea. We're giving it a shot. Oh, okay. So there's a wet one. There's a wet one. - Fully soaked. - Better. - Oh, yeah. - Really good. - Oh, nice. - Great idea. Oh, every time. - And banana milk is a thing. - Every time, throw some milk in there. That's what does it. - Well, you know, when you eat cereal, if this is plain cereal, you could just, a lot of times I get a banana and slice it up and put it in with the cereal. - You got to try that. - What I think is that, - The milk. - For American audiences, all you got to do is say, just add milk right on it. - And change the soccer ball to a football. - [Brittany] Well, I think I know how this is going, but do you guys want to vote? - You don't know, Brittany! - I'm starting to like bananas. - [Brittany] I won't make any assumptions. - Okay. - [Brittany] Three, two, one. - Yes? - Look at that. - And Dad, we're going to let you keep your veto vote that you tried to use on the licorice. Next time we do this, you might have two veto votes. How's that? - Okay. All right. - What was your favorite, everybody? The first one was my favorite, the strawberry gummy. - I think I agree with that. The Pica Fresa. - Yeah. The first one was the best one. - And this is my second favorite. - We're also bringing back some Smash and some shapes. Lots of good stuff happened. Dad, what's your favorite? - My favorite, nut plug. I like the nut plug. - [Link] All right. - [Rhett] We'll get them back. - Already using the name. - So look for these on an American shelf because yes, we have that power. - Y'all just don't know how much power you do have. - That's a scary thought. Thanks for being your mythical best. - You know what time it is. - Hi, I'm Ray. - I'm Nikki. - I'm Mikayla. - And we're at the Catoosa Blue Whale on Historic Route 66. And it's time to spin the wheel of mythicality. - How did they get that whale carcass all the way out there? - The Catoosa Blue Whale. I've never heard of that.
