scientists are studying selfies and you might be surprised at what they’re finding let’s talk about that good mythical morning why do people take selfies feel free to answer link Cloyne for attention and a boost of self-esteem you’re partially right I’m going to give you a document what their face looks like like a stop-motion age progression no just like a picture of your face there is a professor mark are leery he may or may not teach like this but when I Robot impersonation I’m sorry mark he’s a professor of psychology and neuroscience itti adversity yes mark I know you requested that I impersonate you like this but I’m not going to because it’s weird he’s a professor of neuroscience at Duke University intern North Carolina he said I posting selfies people can keep themselves in other people’s minds through the clothes one wears ones expression staging the physical setting in the style of the photo people can convey a particular image of themselves presumably when they think will garner social rewards so in other words you’re investing into your social persona by staging everything in the right way getting the angle just right and taking selfies that’s why people take selfies even if they don’t know it you don’t just take selfies like Oh got it too you know just take my daily selfie or I’m just haphazardly doing it people this is a calculated thing and there’s actually these things that people do on a regular basis to calculate the perfect photo we’re gonna get to that I just take selfies because I want to prove I was there if I take a pretty picture of like a pasture I won’t be like hey I was at that pasture it wasn’t been downloaded thumbs up in the foreground that’s my butt that whose thumb is that your fingerprint your fingerprints on your thumb to shake where did selfies come from well actually a guy named Robert Cornelius who was an American pioneer Photography produced a daguerreotype which is an image formed on a polished silver surface under this in 1839 limited photo one of the very first photos ever and because he didn’t have anybody there with him apparently and he can actually make it it was so long the exposure time was so long like a couple of minutes he was able to take the lens cap off get in front of the thing look at himself looking at into the camera for a couple minutes and then go back and finish taking the photo and so I guess just by default one of the first photos ever was actually a selfie but he did have his he doesn’t have his hand on the camera doesn’t really look like you know like a girl on night out on the town he looks like a man in 1839 sort of just solemnly staring at the camera so debatable whether or not that’s itself I think his jackets on fire the first use of the term selfie appeared in 2002 on an Australian internet forum September this was the post I’m drunk at a mate’s 21st I tripped over and landed first with him front teeth come in a very close second on a set of steps I had a hole about one centimeter long right through my bottom lip and sorry about the focus it was a selfie he was also like from a Charles Dickens play so like an eighth grade play that heap’d how he sounded he had a little bit too much to drink he fell he busted his lip and took a picture of himself but then when describing the picture on the forum he called it a selfie and he did not know in his drunken state just how much this would catch on now it’s used all the time today people know exactly what we’re talking about when we say selfie but the first time it was used as a hashtag was on Instagram January 16th 2011 Jennifer Lee from Oakland 2 shared a picture of her face a selfie and hashtag did selfie so congratulations Jennifer Lee you you hold the record for the first hashtag selfie and it’s good when something is that well that’s cool that you can go back and actually find that you know there’s documented she can say that’s me you can’t find another hashtag before me I mean with the advent of you know help devices right I mean it’s just inevitable that people are going to start taking pictures like snapping away snapping away and snapping away now there’s never away some of the ways never the way is out there’s a lot of no escaping it now these scientists you know these science is always wondering about something I wanted to find out stuff just enjoy people over it selfie citynet decided to investigate how people photograph themselves with mobile phones in five cities around the world so the selfies from five cities around the world including New York Moscow Berlin Bangkok and Sao Paulo now they the first thing to determined is the percentage of photos that are selfies now what would you say wild guess what percentage of Instagram photos are selfies into I’m going to say 20% now I mean that’s high but I’m gonna say that one out of five no it’s actually three to five percent okay four percent only four out of 100 Instagram photos are actually selfies which almost everyone overestimates that thinks that it’s more but they said no technically a person who takes a patient of themselves only about 4% of the time hmm now which ginger do you think is more likely to take a selfie um women correct link you must stay on the internet quite a lot because I just had a 50-50 chance I women are significantly more likely to be the ones I do still like guys there’s like a little bit well you know I’m taking a picture of myself it’s I don’t know for me it’s I don’t know it just seems like someone shouldn’t do but men are more likely to take selfies as they age and women are less likely to take selfies as they age what they found is that in general women take more selfies than men in fact in Moscow Russia 82% of all selfies are from females but once you pass the 30 year mark women start taking less selfies and men start taking more selfies well I don’t think that means that as men age they take more selfies I think is that older men take more selfies than younger men because older men are kind of clueless about you know how people are they’re going to be received taking selfies so I heard about the selfies I’m gonna start doing that they just clueless or maybe there’s just this pressure on women to remain young forever in our society and as soon as they pass 30 I think they don’t they’re no longer fit the mold they quit taking pictures of themselves you ever thought about that link well that’s probably that’s probably said that is probably true and it is definitely sad that’s all that’s probably sad as if I cared about it I think that was sad that’s definitely sad is probably true now the average age of a person who takes a selfie 23.7 round that up 24:20 the 24 year old the person out there just the average person in a selfie right now is a 24 year old person what kind and that just goes to show you that it’s not just the teenagers who are taking selfies I mean people much older than that this is a phenomenon that everyone is participating in now what do you think about what do you think is the most common thing for someone to do in a selfie with their head along with their head shake vigorously no they don’t because it makes it blurry and it’s like oh with blur bar selfie no blur face is not hasn’t really caught on that’s tech more face I want to be first to do it I got to do it right now duck face is caught on I discover that people are more like a smile first of all people smile a lot in selfies but the head tilt the head tilt is incredibly common in selfies I don’t know what the percentage of head tilt is but I do have the percentages of men versus women women tell their heads about 50% more times than men do so a woman’s going to take a selfie she’s even 50% more likely to tilt the head right because women have more brains it’s hard to keep the head straight I think it’s pigtails trying to get on it I think I were the late I think there’s enough enough ladies out there with the side ponytail it’s just got to get started and it was just an evidence I think we can probably test and do debunk that theory pretty quickly but I will tell you one thing uh if you go to my Instagram you will see don’t do it I have taken some selfies and I always feel a little self-conscious about it I went to your Instagram I saw that you’ve taken some selfies my Instagram is fallow uh but but that means there’s no crops in it right I don’t I don’t take them anymore but I gave up the thing I have noticed is that we don’t do a lot of head tilting I didn’t go through all mine but I noticed that in your selfies you don’t tilt your head and I gotta say good job good on you man you shouldn’t stand up for the men out here don’t tilt your head about sit up I was about you take a picture of us instead of that look at that is very very strong tilt thing going okay so meeting to the minds do you think hashtag do you fit the averages do you you tilt your head are you 24 years old you hear woman 24 24 year-old woman is who tilts her head approximately eleven point eight percent of eleven point eight percent no actually it’s eleven point eight degrees oh wow that’s what it is I got the degrees up in there that women tell their heads about what twelve point three degrees versus men tilt their heads about eight point two degrees some science is how there you’ve got a protractor out on
