can you tell when someone’s laugh is fake let’s talk about that good mythical morning I came across some research that is fascinating UCLA study tonight of UCLA if people can tell the difference between real laughs and fake laughs and sigh it’s fascinating story I want to tell you about it but I will also say that inspired by that study we have devised our own experiment which should be a lot of fun oh yeah okay so here’s the thing they recorded 18 legitimate laughs and then 18 fake laughs they showed it to three different P 36 total first people they played the laughs just normal speed real and fake 37 percent of the fake laughs food people then it was a minority but then the second a second group of people they showed these laughs sped up now the fake laughs they it fooled 50% of the people harder to tell us well don’t spit out that’s why I laugh fast when I figured that third group they slow the laughs down then they asked a different question kind of interesting they asked was this slow down laughs made by an animal like a nonhuman animal or a human animal okay and here’s what they found out they found out animals laugh if yes in if though if it was but this is just a perception these were all human laughs but if the laugh was real if it was a real human laugh the person couldn’t tell if it was an animal or human but if it was a fake human laugh they could definitely tell that it was a human fascinating yeah in this I love UCLA this is basically because a real laugh comes from an emotional vocal system that’s shared with primates and other laughing non-human animals but humans distinctively are the only ones that can fake laugh because they use the human speech system to mimic laughs you know it’s acting he’s like a professor and it’s not as breathy and things like that should teach class so anyway you’re welcome for that this is what classes in session oh this is like this is actually an experiment that’s about to happen what we’re going to do is we’re going to go into our laugh lab we have each already filmed ourselves laughing and never what that was for now we are going to conduct an experiment to see if we can tell if the other person’s laugh is real or fake to the laugh lab welcome to the laugh lab it’s it’s the same place we were just a second ago except now we’re looking at videos on our computers yeah okay as I said we have filmed ourselves laughing – to some internet videos we thought were funny and also fake laughing I’ve picked my laughs that I’m going to present to you you’re gonna pick you pick the ones you’re going to present to me I get to tell you if it’s fake or real and the thing is if the one thing you think about if my laugh sounds like a nonhuman animal then you know it’s real but you also know me so there’s lots of criteria that are coming into play here to decide if I’m giving you a fake laugh I’m trying to tell you if it’s fake a real and I’m using the fact that if it sounds like an animal is real as a to guide me in this okay I’m game but you’re not determining if I’m an animal right because already know that okay to be the case here’s the first one all of these are slowed down fake fake yeah why do you think it’s fake I don’t you sense you six years old man but you’ve never seen me slow down man K fool me animal see the end there you see how it just kind of dropped okay let’s eyes there hmm yeah never in real life start allows oh no I did cuz I was that like I was watching something that made me laugh okay all right you’re right here’s the second one you ready uh-huh oh you’re better on the second one yeah I saw it I just gave you is gonna I was gonna say real you’re gonna say real anyway yeah yeah I did seriously straight up I thought you revealed your answer but I was totally gonna say real cuz I cuz I could see I was watching your eyes in the way it was moving to follow something to laugh at specifically well that’s not you’re supposed to look it I’m just using my brain man right here it is uh that’s quite a for quite a breath you got going there it’s like a wheeze okay alright so now let me see if I can tie it up Oh die I where there was real a fake it was definitely gross I would say real that’s real there was like your eyes were water and it sounded like an animal jump yeah Wow I said you said wow you said wow cuz you actually left alright let’s keep this train rolling my number three here fake man well okay but I’ll give I’ll give you a little bit more of this one before you totally decide real real real fake fake I think that with you
