the super volcano is going to erupt is it really all that bad let’s talk about good mythical morning thank you for making us a part of your daily routine it’s a good mythical morning no matter what time of day you watch with us okay well we’re not watching you but whatever I’m watching I look at the monitor quite a bit check my hair okay you’ve probably heard about this supervolcano under Yellowstone National Park it’s hard not to watch television now especially if you watch one of these like Discovery Channel’s or science channels National Geographic every other day they’re talking about the supervolcano that’s going to blow up the world now III will say I don’t have cable and I’ve only very vaguely heard of the supervolcano you have an antenna right so an antenna I do I have a digital antenna get a lot of good stuff with that nope nothing really okay I’m gonna a lot of singing competition shows it’s good those are the best those might be in jeopardy let me explain I get Jeopardy – this is the volcano the supervolcano under Yellowstone has an explosive ‘ti index of 8 that’s on a scale of 0 to 8 oh really why didn’t they just make it 10 I didn’t even know there wasn’t explosivity that is I’m glad in the descriptive term next to 8 on the scale is apocalyptic Wow meaning if this thing erupts it will be apocalyptic and it is under Yellowstone this is real it see I’m not making this up this is all the science channels are there is there telling you the truth ok uh and it’s a caldera caldera volcano meaning it’s not a mountain it’s actually kind of a very large depressed Basin so it’s like a flat area now so a lot of people know about because it’s not like this big mountain that you can go to and look at this you’ll Old Faithful uh all the geothermal activity at Yellowstone including Old Faithful is a result of all the heated superheated magma that is underneath the ground there yeah they recently found out during an investigation that is 2.5 times bigger than they originally thought and it was already a big deal if this thing or to erupt but just like last year they found out no this thing’s two-and-a-half times bigger than we thought that much more magma and there’s all this stuff that’s been happening lately that’s brought it back into the news including increased earthquake activity I think this year or late last year there was like a four point eight magnitude earthquake which is a really big deal for the area usually lots of earthquakes precede an eruption the ground there is uplifting as much as 10 inches over the past few years that’s another sign that whoops something’s getting ready to happen and the Bison are leaving there’s there’s a video that went viral of these bison there’s got new people coming into Yellowstone on the park rope and the Bison are just running out of the park and a lot of times it’s like animals they got super senses and they know when stuff’s going down right and the Bison are smarter than people we all know that and they’re leaving they’re getting out of town so huh and scientists say there’s absolutely nothing we can do to prevent this eruption it’s not a matter of if but when you can’t cap it you can’t cap it do they know where it’s going to come up or is that even a question because there’s no conical there’s not a well that top of that mountain that’s where it’s coming up it’s a lot bigger than just one point exactly it this is I’m going to talk to you about some of the catastrophic things they’re going to happen when this thing erupts okay but I don’t want to be all doom and gloom like all these science programs we’re this good mythical morning not bad mythical morning and so we’re going to find the bright side I’m going to tell you a horrific fact about what’s going to happen when this thing erupts and I want us to explore the bright side of that horrific fact well the bright side of a volcano is typically the top side there was a lavas coming out that’s good link is that good that knows criteria great observation all right here’s one thing that you might want to know if this thing erupts a full-scale eruption everything within 100 miles will be killed instantaneously find the bright side everything within 100 miles is going to die is it instantly mm-hmm it all at once up what explosion oh goodness hotness and I think I killed it kill you that’s animals and very difficult to find the bright side unless you like want to just make a room for something new I’ve got some bright side you probably won’t be there let me think about if you’re watching this program you probably won’t be within a hundred mile radius of Yellowstone at the time well now I’m not gonna be okay I thought that was a good thing it’s gonna impact some people we’re probably probably won’t be at Yellowstone at the time you don’t think that’s a good thing well yes it’s a very self-centered Brightside here’s here’s something that will affect more of you a full-scale eruption of this volcano could potentially dump a volcanic ash layer at least ten feet deep up to 1,000 miles away wells was shut down almost all of us Midwestern agriculture a 1,000 mile radius from Wyoming ten feet of ash find the bright side friend well it’s shuts down all agriculture unless you you’re like harvesting ash yeah we could become Ashman you that’s what you’re thinking no but that’s a good one I was thinking Disney World wouldn’t be affected and the crowds were probably pretty thin so you’re not really making a bright side of the thing you’re still just making the radius of where things are still okay I’m thinking about you what’s not affected listen you make it snowboard on tin foot of ash that’s quite a base no ash in Disney World no lines you probably ride every ride twice there’ll be a long lines because everyone will have evacuated there go to the next one I think okay snowboarding on 10-foot of ash let’s go with that way two-thirds of the US could become temporarily uninhabitable because of toxic gas Oh your your radius is getting even larger most of the United States will become uninhabitable and I don’t know how long this toxic gas is gonna stick around uh I mean I don’t mean to make everything about business opportunity but I’m just think about the gas mask industry we should invest in gas masks right now is there better silver lining than that this is pretty doom and gloom I was thinking about post-apocalyptic movies and TV shows would be able to film in many different locations that they can’t now cheaply now you have to go to the Salton Sea or some little ghost town you just be able to go next door and make a post-apocalyptic drama comedy Wow and I’m supposed to be happy my response is like I’m happy oh yeah that’s the bright side post-apocalyptic a webseries together they’re cheap it gets better link the planet would be best better would be radically cooled up to 20 degrees because of the ash and dust in the atmosphere 20 degree cooling of the planet talked about snowboarding I was thinking cross-country skiing everywhere literally cross-country yeah snowman make a snowman in Burbank can’t make a snowman out here he’ll melt there’s no snow here you can’t make him to melt but again you don’t seem to be too convinced that these are positive things yeah well let me really try not happening yet I bet I the biggest one is snowboarding on ash like that’s the biggest one I’ve got okay man gloom is a is still lingering I’ve covered some things that are now that’s all potentially disconcerting you’ve learned all this for the first time 100 mile radius everything dies yeah thousand mile radius 10 feet of ash two-thirds the United States becomes uninhabitable the globe cools about 20 degrees now well let me just say one thing the National Park Service at Yellowstone has gotten so many requests about this volcano I’m sure it’s real business like what I said is banging I’m at least I know I’m not going so they have responded they have an official response a QA on their website to answer some things and so I’m going to clear some things up and maybe you won’t be so scared now okay here’s what the National Park Service says don’t worry I well I said don’t worry this is what they say though another caldera-forming eruption is theoretically possible is very unlikely to occur in the next thousand or even 10,000 years so you know what it’s probably not going to happen it could happen it is theoretically possible in our life it probably won’t happen also or a kid’s life the most likely activity would be lava flows such as those that occurred after the last major eruption such a lava flow would ooze slowly over months and years allowing plenty of time for park managers to evaluate the situation and protect people so in other words this full-scale everything explodes everything goes crazy just makes one possibility that just makes good television but it’s probably just gonna be like a little bit of a Probab will make that noise but a little bit of lava comes out we can run faster than that and the but you get on bison and you right out of the park yeah and also for the most likely type of volcanic eruption in Yellowstone anywhere would be safe except in the immediate vicinity of the advancing lava flow so in other words get out of the way of the lava you’ll probably be okay if if you see the lava don’t run towards it you’re going to want to so that’s all that’s the bright side think that’s what they’re saying if this thing explodes tomorrow and it’s the full-scale eruption then you know what we’re going to do we’re going to go to digital see you in Disney World will have on cross-country skis and we’ll all make a post-apocalyptic movie together it’ll be a great gathering of mythical beasts will be selling ash because that’s going to be our job we have lots of edge to sell you but if that doesn’t happen is probably is going to be a little spud of oil or lava
