does your name affect your destiny let’s talk about that good mythical morning the Romans had a saying no minest omen and that literally means name is destiny really no money a woman if I said it just like name and every day no I still read it they didn’t have to do that parents would say it to their children a snowman omen name is Desi meaning that what your name is your first name maybe your last name or today we’re gonna be talking about first names actually can affect your future it turns out the Romans were onto something because science has backed this up a number of studies have shown in very interesting ways that what you are called affects the way people perceive you the way you perceive yourself and we’re going to get into that today yeah I think this is a fascinating topic it’s the type of thing that well I haven’t thought about it actively a whole lot but when I do think about it I mean we have interesting names we’ve talked a little bit about that and how maybe that’s had an impact on our lives or our psyche so yeah press on Roman dude I’m not gonna give you being big yeah don’t I just don’t do that I’m read again well it’s interesting but red is my name and I think there’s a spoiler alert here there’s an application for for those of you who are going to have progeny and you’re going to name them there’s a tremendous amount of power it’s not naming Ted taken lightly you got to think about this because you could change your child’s life what pressure science say well link studies show one study shows that children who like their names turn out to be more confident and self assertive than those who do not like their names that makes sense because think about how many times in a given day or when you’re meeting people the first thing you ask somebody is what’s your name and then you typically answer it with your name for me I say Rhett right and I like my name sometimes for you guys in my name I don’t like I don’t know mmm that’s bad gosh but if you can you help me but if your name is something that you don’t like and I’m not gonna throw out any names right now because if you have that name then you’re going to be like I shouldn’t be confident I was gonna say Dilbert is really anybody out there named Dilbert I mean is that somebody’s actual name yeah you should call yourself that if that’s what it is I’m sorry I had to go there Dilbert unless unless unless somehow you’re able to overcome that and you’re able to turn it into a positive and if so that that’s great but it certainly makes sense that if you like your name and that’s what you’re always leading with as a human you’re starting off on a confident foot yes be you’re not being defensive about Dilbert right apologetic you know what the first thing out of your mouth to be your name and then apologize for it this one was completely out of the blue for me I never thought about this okay research shows that boys with names traditionally given to girls are more likely to misbehave than boys that have masculine names more likely to misbehave if you’re a guy with a girl name like a boy named Sue like the Johnny Cash song Oh which is a great song and that’s that’s the story of spoiler alert again overcoming a name that I just spoiled a Johnny Cash song you don’t know the song I don’t think you can spoil a song I knew a guy minutes I knew a guy named Ashley you do not know this guy he went to Angier oh I’ve never went to Angier but this was in grade school and I think my mom and his mom were friends and Ashley had a twin brother named something that wasn’t Ashley I don’t remember no divider I never knew which one was Ashley but now it makes sense the one it was amazed he was the main one seriously I gave him both gifts for the at the birthday party and one of them graciously accepted the GI Joe guy the other guy just practically spat in my face and said he already had it that was Ashley hmm I didn’t know it at the time I was like I’m sorry that was the offer I didn’t know I should have said hey Ashley you you’ve got a girl name and you got a chip on your shoulder play with the frickin GI Joe well now again it’s not a girl name let’s just be honest it’s Ashley it’s a girl name well no his he was a boy it’s traditionally a girl name oh just like Leslie there’s lots of guys named Leslie but there’s a lot more girls named Leslie in fact our first girlfriend was named Lizzie hey Leslie how you doing we watching so I gotta walk away I don’t know why we’re there but I’ve never known a Leslie a guy named Leslie that I liked Leslie Nielsen is the only one I could think of I don’t know him I got no reason to like him well he seems like a troublemakers you know so he’s deceased oh yeah of course yeah but what else does science say certain names that lend themselves to be made fun of like if your last name is butts and your first name is Seymour I mean I don’t think there’s anyone out there that’s named Seymour butts but there aren’t we have known some what about Phil more feel more butts yeah anyway people with these types of names have been known to grow up to be more defensive and maybe to be compensating maybe be a little defensive and sensitive so it’s just my name I don’t actually do that I’m an innocent guy and if I did I would wear gloves so sorry here’s one that is oh it sounds like it’s a joke but it’s not your name can also influence your decisions in life based on alliteration alliteration is using the same consonant at the beginning of two words like it has been scientifically shown that a disproportionately large number of dentists are named Dennis no I’m not making this up if you’re Dennis you have an increased chance of being a dentist and if you’re a lauren you have an increased chance of being a lawyer what what just because it’s like well are in the lawyer I’m Dennis the Dennis sit on down well you know Dora the explora that’s not alliteration that just rhymes that would be like rent the vent you know which if that could also work I’ve always wanted this I thought about the I said I feel it really if our school guidance counselor would have employed this I think she’d have done a better job we would have done engineer it you should be a roofer haha link a link you know what you should do you should be a Lincoln Log maker assembler what is it it could be like a lawn mower link the lawn or not the machine but the person who Moses I was already doing that link the landscaper see you were already doing it you you are making this true you were making science true and you didn’t even know it hmm making science true since 1984 or whatever every man making science through one stupid statement at a time I think is it okay this is now this is what we want to to home in on here is the idea that people have built-in perceptions they can’t help but have preconceived notions about names so when you meet somebody and you’re like hey I’m link or hey I’m Steve people are going to think certain things they automatically have these things in their minds already if they had a bad experience with somebody but even beyond that sometimes you just picture something when you hear somebody’s name and this kind of thing will follow your entire life so let’s do a thought experiment here I’m going to throw out a name and then we both say what we think of it and then we’ll reverse you think of what what the name means to you at the same time and let’s see if they line up all right Tammy what do you think of when you hear Tammy she’s got brown hair but she does it blond I think Tammy and she and she’s she talks a lot it’s a little bit curly she likes to permit she might she means it all about her hair I think she’s a switch she’s a sweet person that I don’t want to date but I would I’d like to hire her to work with me on something hey Tammy how are you what give me a just give me another name Barbara Barbara a lot of syllables this but Barbara’s are complicated I can never you can’t read-a Barbara really I think Barbara’s are the life of the party and they like to be called barb for short hey barb oh and once you start calling Barbara barb everything changes and they’re just that they’re always happy they’re always happy to be they’re always happy to lend a hand how about Billy Billy Billy’s way too nice like almost sickened ly nice like he’s so nice that it’s like come on are you really being that nice I think Billy is you know what I mean maybe this is any name ending in the e sound but I think this is okay guy grow up you know when you’re a kid you can be called this but you got to go with Bill I mean it’s it’s you’re an adult now how about butch butch I think of like short-sleeve white shirt sleeves rolled up flipping burgers grunting I think of like a guy with a flattop who has some military experience that’s a woman um Cletus oh this is this is very stereotypical I can see a guy with like a missing front tooth right if your name’s Cletus yeah you’re gonna have a hard time getting a job in like the IT sector you got to change your name go with the middle name Clete stormy stormy um stormy I think stormy is a female I would hope a storm can be anything you wanted to be stormy is stormy he’s never a real person stormy is the name of a woman a fictional woman that a guy writes a singer-songwriter song about old storming I love you stormy you been some time with me tonight stormy haha what about Coco Oh Coco she’s really hard to deal with she dresses in all white she wears boots she’s always unhappy she’s always too hot no you got I mean I’m going with the first thing that pops into my mind loofah loofah is a DJ for children you know it’s oh but it’s a woman it’s a female DJ but she only plays like kids parties so super house it’s a fake name yeah okay uh and how about this one this is I just went with this door I can picture a man named door uh door he’ll always seizes the opportunity I don’t know I really can’t I’d be I think doors a good name if I know if I’m in or McGlothlin if I met a person named door I would literally feel fear I just out of I’d be afraid for what their life is like okay what do you think about those names and what’s your name leave a corn a min the comment and then say what you think it means about that and thanks for liking this episode you know what that is yo my name is Jacob and I’m from Sweden and it’s time to spin a wheel off with the cat today we’re launching another episode of our podcast ear biscuits this week’s special guest was Lee Newton from SourceFed also we made a know how much you mean to me but I’m like high five you think I’ll that it doesn’t do it shake man right to be formal no I just feel like we should do something where we just like I’m gonna I really I don’t I mean just go with me here I’m gonna come in I’m gonna come in like this put your arms in at you put your arms in are you yeah yeah I’m coming in now close them like a crab how’s that feel how you like that it’s not the top of my list I made it up I give it another name chase chase you know it sounds desperate you can’t give us names that people hear because you guys know they’re chasing
