GMM 914: Dumbest Crimes Inspired By Movies

You ever seen a movie and thought, “Hey I could commit a crime like that”? Let’s talk about that. ♪ (intro music) ♪ – Good mythical morning. – Sometimes people do stuff that is so stupid that you’re like, “This is just like a movie!” and sometimes what they did – that is stupid was actually in a movie. – Yup, it’s time for us to present to you… Let’s get started with a classic, Back to the Future! You remember that, Doc Brown figured out how to make a time machine out of a DeLorean and you would go eighty-eight – miles per hour and then you would travel in time! – Sure. Well a 40-year old dude in – you guessed it, Florida – with no background in science, engineering, or time travel was like, “I can do that. I don’t have a DeLorean but I – have a Dodge Challenger.” – Oh they’ll go eighty-eight. – “I’m sure it can get eighty-eight” – Uh huh. So this man did that. He got up to eighty-eight miles per hour. – What year did he land in? – He said “I’m trying to–“, he was trying to create a time portal and the weird thing is, is it actually kinda worked because he created a portal into Advanced Tax Services in Pensacola, Florida. He actually created two portals, one in the front and one in the back when he went – directly through the tax service. – (Link) Okay, before I laugh too much, – was anybody hurt? – No, he wasn’t hurt. – Thank goodness because this is amazing. – And you know what, no one traveled in – time either. – No. Did he get his taxes done? No word on whether or not he got his taxes done in that short period of time. But he was not hurt! – And it was minimal charges. – Clean – clean break right there. – Good clean fun! – Yeah it takes more than going eighty- – eight, does it? – Yeah (laughs) there’s a few other things – involved. – Something like special effects and like – terrorists and like a van in like a mall parking lot– – Right yeah. – to like really up the stakes. – And Michael J. Fox. Yeah, him too. Alright I got another one. Elsewhere in Florida… – Oh, really? Surprising. – A high school science teacher, Laura Bailey-Cutkomp, showed the Disney movie Up, a Pixar film, to her students. I don’t – know what Up has to do with science but, helium? – Yeah, helium man. – Um I don’t know, home– – Can learn a lot. Home-moving class? But that has nothing to do with science. Um, so you know the dog, – Doug, has to wear the cone of shame. – (Rhett) Yes, I remember. And that gave her an idea. She bought one and she started cone-shaming her high school students if they acted up, she slapped a cone of shame on ’em. Let me guess, there was nothing wrong with this at all. Nobody reported anything. No and no students posted photos of cone-shamed kids on Facebook. – Right. – That definitely didn’t happen but here are some blurred versions of it. (laughs) It makes it hard to see your textbooks but I’m just nitpicking a little bit. It is a good idea. No. Um, she didn’t get fired. She just got transferred to a middle school uh where they don’t use Facebook. Yeah you can do this to middle schoolers, they won’t complain. They won’t tell their parents about this. How about October Sky? You remember the formative movie in Jake – Gyllenhaal’s career back in 1999. – (Link) No, but I hear it is a great movie. (Rhett) Yeah that will live in your memory forever. – (Link) That’s what the poster says. – (Rhett) You’ll never be able to forget this one. The rocket boys uh actually had to collect some money to build a rocket and the way that they did that is they stole some old spikes off of abandoned – railroad tracks. Okay? So in 2006– – Used those as currency? two teens had an idea, “Let’s do what they did in October Sky.” Two very different details though, number one: it’s not a movie. It’s just actually happened – in real life. – True. – Number two: Jake Gyllenhaal was not involved. – Okay. – I have more points. Number three– – Oh wow. – the tracks were not abandoned. – Ooh. They took 157 spikes from these railroad tracks that were $3 each which, do the math on that, that’s $471 split two ways! We’re not talking about a big score here. – You might be talking about a big accident. – But thankfully they discovered that this was done ahead of time, before disaster struck. Nobody died, they were able to repair the tracks. The teens were arrested and then when – in their defense they were like, “We were just doing what we saw on October Sky” which, listen– – That’s not a defense. – We’ve done a lot of things on this show. I don’t think we’ve done anything technically illegal but maybe if you do – ’em in certain states or certain places– – We’ve put– – maybe they would be illegal. – We’ve put ‘Do not attempt’ – at the bottom. – Do not use, “I saw this on GMM” as an – excuse for your crimes, please! – Matter of fact, we should just write at the bottom ‘When you attempt this thing and the police ask you about it, do not – say that you saw us do it first.’ – Don’t drag us into it! ‘Don’t drag us into it’, that’s what it’s gonna say. ‘Don’t drag us into it.’ – You can drag Jake Gyllenhaal into it. – Next up, I got a couple in Maine, Thomas and Megan Woodard, who were watching a rerun of Seinfeld. – Yeah who hasn’t? – Like we do. Um Kramer and Newman hatched a scheme to drive a truckload of cans and bottles out of New York to Michigan so that they could cash in on the redemption fee, which was double. – Right. – Okay? So they make more money. The Woodards thought, “Hey, we own a recycling redemption center. This is on!” They open and it was in Maine. So they open two out-of-state redemption centers, one in New Hampshire, one in Massachusetts. Massachusetts. They gave smaller refunds in those states to the people who brought the bottles. Trucked the bottles back to – Maine and cashed in on the higher returns in Maine. – Oh geez. Well, except it is illegalz. Uh bottle refund fraud is what it’s called. – Oh, that’s quite a charge. – Over three years, they moved over a – hundred thousand containers – bottles of cans. – Okay. – They made a whopping $10,000. – That’s – that’s a lot of work for $3,333 – and 33¢ every year. – Yeah, especially when the fine is – $10,000 when you get caught. – Oh, really? Well, you know, it all – it – all comes down the wash. – And twenty-one days in jail. – So it was worth it! – Well, it’s a good story. Okay, you’ve heard of The Purge. You know, 2013 movie. I think there’s been a second – Purge at this point. – (Link) Too scared of that. But it’s this twelve hour period where you can do whatever you want to without legal repercussions. The city becomes bloodbath of chaos and murder. Well in 2014, a teenaged boy in Louisville, Kentucky sees this and he tweets, “Who’s trying to get a – Louisville Purge started with me?” – (both laugh) I love the phrasing of that. Well apparently, a lot of people in Louisville were trying to get a Purge started with him. Um so he actually made a poster. You know if you make a poster, something becomes very official. – (Link) Real. It becomes real. – (Rhett) He took the Purge poster from the movie and he just put ‘Louisvilles The Purge’– – (Link) How many Louisvilles are there? – (Rhett) on top of it. Well, he forgot the apostrophe, he just forgot the apostrophe. In fairness, there are multiple Louisvilles across the nation. (Rhett) Yeah and you can’t fit Louisville in-between The and Purge. – (Link) No. – (Rhett) You gotta work with what you got. (Link) The font would be way too small. So anyway, this was enough to get people excited about this and the cops were like, “We gotta – we gotta prepare for this. We’re gonna cancel events, we’re gonna close down businesses.” And that Friday night comes, 8PM strikes on the clock, everybody starts looking out their windows. Guess what happened? Nothing happened! Absolutely no crimes were committed. However, there was a rumor that someone stole a giraffe from the local zoo. But it was just a rumor. – Are you serious? – That was the worst thing that happened – was a rumor about a giraffe getting stolen. – Did that happen in the movie? – The Purge! – Don’t answer that. Alright, if you think you can’t take a tween vampire romance movie seriously, think again! Uh 2009, a thirteen-year old boy in Des Moines, Iowa was obsessed with Twilight. So he started wearing glitter and shimmer makeup to get the ladies… – (Link) No. – (Rhett) I’m sure that worked. He went on a biting spree. He bit eleven students over the course of a few days. He bit this one thirteen-year old female student on the right hand at a track meet. – Oh. You’re not gonna get much blood. – It’s difficult– – Out of a hand. – It’s difficult when she’s running. – I don’t know– – You know? It’s like – trying to get your mouth– But you know what, she’s probably got blood that’s pooling in the hands– – Pooling in the hands. – Because of the– – That’s what he was thinking. – This is a smart kid, why we picking on him? This kid should be commended. Biting the hands of tracking – track meet girls. And it happens everywhere, you know, there is a biter in every class. – Yeah we had– – We had one. – He bit me. – Bradley. Bradley D. That’s as far as we should go. We can’t – we can’t say his whole name. – He had blonde – blonde spike, mullet. – Yeah. – And he had teeth. – And he was a lot smaller than me so he’d – like, was able to just like sneak– – Come in low. – up like a raptor and (makes bite sound) – On your track hand. – Yeah. – Right there on the track hand. You know, he went for the hand. He got me on the forearm– – He did? – I was like, “What the – (stuttering)” I didn’t tell anybody. He didn’t get in trouble. I was like “Dude, why did you do that?” – (Link laughs) You just– – And then I went and washed it off. You’re like “I’m not friends with you.” Alright, I don’t know how Twilight ended. It might have like a half-vampire baby but who – I wouldn’t know. But uh this dude was delayed – had a delayed referral to a juvenile court on an assault charge. Watch – out Bradley if you’re still out there. – What do you think the statute of limitations on a bite is? I could – I could – I could charge Bradley with assault right now. – I believe he’s no longer biting– – Do you wanna do that? – That’s the thing I’m more concerned about. – You know what, you’re forgiven Bradley. – You can bite me again if you want. – Thanks for liking, commenting – I said – biting, not liking – commenting and subscribing. – You know what time it is. – Hi I’m Nola from San Francisco, California! – And I’m Lily from Arlington, Virginia! – We’re swinging on a swing in Miami, Florida. – (both) And it’s time to spin the Wheel of Mythicality! Please don’t commit a crime using a mug but if you are gonna just definitely do it, use our mug, the Good Mythical Mug. RhettandLink.com/store. Click through to Good Mythical More. We’re gonna play a video game entitled ‘Twisted Metal’. – Oh yeah. – Oh yeah. Bringing back the memories. Unisong about hangnails. (both singing) Hey nails. What’s up, girl? You (inaudible) get (inaudible) something. Yeah let’s do that together. Let’s hang out (both clap). Let’s hang out right now. Let’s hang out together. I just hit a snag.
