GMM 95: Training Wheels Are Evil

the way you learned how to ride a bicycle is wrong good mythical morning this episode is brought you by royalty-free music library calm that’s where we get pretty much all of our background musics now I’m alarmed at what you have said link because I can ride a bike just fine and the way I learn how to ride a bike was with training wheels training wheels that’s it training wheels are evil training wheels are bad people I’ve read I’ve read an article because I I to learn how to ride a bike with the train but you’re not very good at riding a bike you should you still have trouble staying on that’s neither here nor there but I read this article said training was a bad training wheels are evil you shouldn’t use them you shouldn’t train your kids so there’s ramifications here people if you still need to learn how to ride a bike or I had a friend Matt Peden you know Matt Matt didn’t learn how to ride a bike until after he got married I don’t know how this happened the guys really good at playing basketball it’s got a great sense of humor he’s a good friend from back in North Carolina shoutout to Matt but he never learned how to ride a bike until after he got married at like age 22 well I think it meant more at that point though you know it just means more when you do it later in life he and his wife went there I’m just trying to help them out a little bit he just wife went to Ocracoke and as you know when you go out on that island and Outer Banks you everyone rides beach cruisers and that’s where you learn how to ride it bite as you know how to swim he’s it I I don’t know we can we can email him you should be able to do both of those just as an adult anyway the article said you should also like mustard it was almost like an epiphany in my mind the way the article explains like I should have already realized this there’s two things that you need to learn when you learn how to ride a bike one is pedaling but the other one is balance now you tell me which one’s more difficult pedaling balance balance obviously balance is more difficult so why do we put our kids and why did our parents to subject us to a bike that taught us how to pedal but didn’t teach us how to balance in fact it taught us how to not back right because when you when you’re on a bike I you know I don’t want to go into the physics of this but it’s so counterintuitive how to ride a bike if you’ve never done it it’s like speaking an alien language with your body as you’re straddling something made mostly of metal yeah that’s going a little far but okay if you’re falling to the right turn to the right yet your mind does not it that goes against all logic that your body it’s counterintuitive my mind says yes mama body screaming no well that’s what that’s what’s happening actually mind and body are screaming no until you tell your mind to scream yeah are you saying you want to see Christina Aguilera ride a bike what is it I’ve totally lost I’m an innocent bystander here all I’m saying is that you got to turn in think about it turn turn into the fall so I’m reading this article they say you should teach your kids or kids should be taught to ride bikes without training wheels yeah there’s this thing called a balanced bike and it’s made all out of wood and they sell it in fancy toy stores so so women who drive up in their Range Rovers and they’re eating the manual will say I gotta have one of those are my kids yeah they don’t say buy one of those either I don’t think those women eat manual I don’t have to eat much at all they say get a regular bike kick the training wheels to the curb lower the seat all the way down and remove the pedals you can screw the pedals off so then it becomes a balanced bike that you don’t have to pay a lot of money for and then you can reattach the pedals once it’s time to learn how to pedal and then they just glide so they’re sitting on the seat which is really low but they can stand and just glide and you get up some speed yeah and then you just pick your feet up yeah and you’re learning to balance and then they then they use add the pedaling and it’s just like it’s building it in the right order I respect this yeah and I wish that I had learned this way because I learned the way that you probably learned the way that you learn and that was actually out here in California evil way when I was a kid we lived in Thousand Oaks California right down the road from us and my dad got me on the bike you know that I had any took the training wheels off when I was like whoa what what now you know there’s two points of contact now there’s about to be several points of contact my fall in rapid succession and he would just run with me and then let me go down the sidewalk I mean there’s cars parked there and I just kept busting he put me in jeans he’s like I wear jeans son put jeans on and then I would just into your dad with John Wayne son I’m gonna shoot you if you don’t put on the jeans partner pilgrim and you’re gonna ride this here bicycle and I kinda got a slide well I kind of got it down but the problem was is that he made me wear jeans to learn the bike and so then he would kind of just let go inside and let me go out there on my own and I’m going down and I got it going really fast and of course I didn’t really understand how you stopped I’d go down like seven or eight houses just going down the crossing everybody’s driveway and then eventually my jeans get caught in the chain cuz that was before chain guards my jeans get caught in the chain and I fall down the bike is on top of me I’m like a little five-year-old kid out there and I don’t start going yeah i sat there and yelled we’re stuck your jeans are stuck stuck and I can’t carry the bike remember pinned under a bike I was pinned for like 15 minutes mom dad of course no no the neighbors come out to help the new kid from Georgia dad eventually I just sounded just like that by the way and then so I mean this was traumatic to me if I had the balance bike that would have never happened when I was eight I learned how to ride a bike with the training wheels and then I went to auntie C’s house and she had this bike with like a big banana seat and had a handle on the back and she would run with me and and she would let go with the handle yeah so the first time I learned how to ride how to balance was going at like the top speed that she could run yeah there was there was no Hill there was no nothing like that and you know I feel for parents having been one who taught my kid how to ride a bike the only thing more frustrating the teaching the kid to ride a bike is putting lights on a Christmas tree oh I mean it is one of the most frustrating things ever because you can’t explain it you just have to experience it and then once I learned at Nana and Papa’s house it was this big hill a street asphalt and I went down there with my step-brother at the time Jason he was like three years older he’s come as a punker he had a big banana seat we get down to the bottom of the hill and then it turns to the right but we have so much speed I start turning to the right and he cuts right in front of me and I’m thinking ah you need you should be gone to the right the road goes this way it goes right off the road into you know the people’s head of that pond down there and like he’s gonna go into the pond but what we didn’t know was that there was this little line of string that was used as like a border to keep people from parking on the side of the street next to the pond Oh close and he lays it down and instead of getting close line it comes up and it grabs his ear did it rip it rip it off and then by the time I get over there there’s blood on his hand on his face going down the whole side of his body and he’s saying mom dad just like you and I go to La oh my gosh his ear has been ripped off by this cord that’s pretty awesome and it had only been like the bottom of his ear had been ripped off like he had an elongated earlobe you got more of an ear lobe which is you know some women appreciate that and that was that was tragic and of course I guess he didn’t learn how to pry he didn’t have a balance bike I’m will aim it on that and now okay I’m taking her Matty I’m taking this to heart because I’ve got two boys one can ride a bike one is eight and one is three and doesn’t ride a bike yet he drives a tricycle so I taught Locke how to ride the bike using what I call the gravity method which kind of sounds like a bad birth control technique like we’re using the gravity method that’s why we have eight children but what it really is is when you go out onto a hill a grassy hill is what I suggest and I would just run with him and then I would let him go and so if you if he fell and I’m talking like a just a snuff slope to kind of keep him going yeah and now it’s sent him down this hill and he would get at course there was a tree line at the end of the hill and during the time with her a string on a no but he ran right into the trees a couple times but he’s okay and he learned how to balance the gravity method and then you take them out onto a concrete or the street and then they replicate the same thing and they go and they do the gravity method up there and by the end of it they’ve got the thing of course you know this is you know I talked Locke how to ride the bike a few years ago and you know helmet and shin pads we don’t have any of that stuff going on it was just like you had a pair of underwear on and jeans of course in my family and it is sort of since you out there and who knows what would happen you didn’t have shoes on half the time so what I’m going to teach Shepherd how to ride his bike using one of these yes I’ll bet you’re expensive I’ll teach you land oh no it’s a regular bike no don’t get a balance bite by a regular bike but you’re gonna learn like get a Walmart bike and get the pedals off don’t make some pedals on wooden yuppie buy don’t buy one of those so see I think that what we’ve done is you know we’ve helped you in your relationship with the kids that you’re gonna have one day or that the kids that you do have and we’ve subsided some frustration and open up a world to you balance bike how do we in this episode trip to the barber okay so who’s the barb I’ll be the barber okay hey mr. barber like – how you doing good to see ya I’m great I don’t really I don’t really know much of it just a little trim today I don’t want a lollipop so what you’re telling me is you want to buzz all right no I just a little bit off the sides in the back you know like a little bit of a mullet look but not too much all right no level it’s kind of a signature look I got going here I’d like to think of it those wings those wings that’s communist only commies have this kind of thing we’re gonna go buzz good no no no
