We're trying Shake Shack's new barbecue items while learning about barbecue history Welcome to Good Mythical More. As soon as I heard that this thing existed, which was moments ago- Uh-huh … I was very excited to try it. It's two things really. It's an entire menu of Shake Shack stuff. You're excited- I'm excited for this rib sandwich … about the McRib, um, that Shake Shack has made. They have an entire limited edition barbecue-rized menu for summer, and the main thing is the barbecue boneless baby back rib sandwich, which we are going to try post haste. Now, this isn't … Now, everybody knows the McRib is not, like, ribs that … I mean, I guess it may have been ribs at some point. We also have this mac and cheese we're gonna try, which is- But this is actually ribs that have been hand-de-boned. Okay? I, the only thing I've had like this, and it wasn't like this, 'cause it, 'cause the fact that this is r- maintain a rib form factor is kinda crazy. That place AC BBQ, this Anthony Anderson, et cetera, the entertainer, they have a barbecue place over on the other side of town. They do a rib sandwich, and it's really good, but it's just like somebody took ribs and just, like, ripped the meat off of them. Like pulled pork, but it's pulled off the bone pork. This is like they took the bones out of the ribs like a magician. And then- Oh, no … how did it … Yeah, it's just like they did, they, like, grabbed the end of the bone, like, twisted it, and it, they literally say, "Made with 100% baby back pork ribs that are hand-de-boned." Ah. "Slow cooked for nine hours, marinated in a proprietary barbecue spice blend with apple cider vinegar. It delivers flavor in every bite." Yes. "Topped with barbecue sauce, pickles, and coleslaw." It was hand-de-boned, and I'm going to mouth eat it. Mm. Wow. Damn, Shake Shack Y'all didn't have to do this. I mean, a fast food place doing this? What? I mean, it is $15, which is a bit crazy, but- That is a lot, 'cause this is like a quarter of a rack, or maybe a third of a rack of ribs. Yeah, I mean, the, the, the raw material cost of this thing is a lot It's good though, isn't it? Mm-hmm. It's so good. It's so good. I just wanna eat a little bit of that rib with nothing else. And that barbecue sauce I actually I like a dry rub rib, but I've realized that I like a dry rub rib that then has sauce on it. Wow. You know what I'm saying? Which is exactly what's happening here. I- in this I want the sauce, so I'm agreeing with you. It'd be, it'd be too dry otherwise. I mean- Good Lord, that's good. Y- you'd never wanna go back to a McRib after this, do you? McRib is not this. McRib is different. McRib is a spiritual exercise at this point for me. You know what I'm saying? Okay. It's like going into a church. It's like a pilgrimage? You know what? I don't really believe in it anymore, but I feel like I gotta go sometimes. Oh. You know, when I'm travel- when I'm in Europe, I like to love to go into the big chapels. There's a r- it's a reverent atmosphere. The pickles and the slaw are necessary 'cause it can get too porky otherwise. Oh, I just moved to the mac and cheese, but I won't even say what I'm gonna think about it because we're gonna look at our first thing that we gotta put in a certain order. So we're gonna eat this mac and cheese and tell you what it's about. Highly recommend getting this once, but it's gonna be hard to go to Shake Shack and just not get a burger. It's gonna be hard for me to not eat this whole thing. You gotta go to Shake Shack, get a burger, and come back the next day- So I probably will and get this. We're gonna put in chronological order all of these things. McRib from McDonald's debuts at some point on our timeline, which we're gonna put- When do you think the McRib was? '89. Yeah. '90. Late '80s. '94. Mm. Could've been as late as '94. Yeah, that's good. I wanna keep eating it. I'm gonna s- 91? I'm gonna save it Barbacoa with a K. Christopher Columbus makes contact with the Taíno tribe of the island now known as Hispaniola. The Taíno are observed grilling meat- Oh, you're reading that. I was like, "He doesn't know anything. Where does he get- Where, where, where is he getting this information from?" No, I know things. Okay. All right. The Taíno are observed grilling meat over an indirect flame, indirect fra- flame, from a stick structure called a barbacoa. Hmm. So this is after the maghrib. Hmm. So this is, this is early. But they have it at Chipotle, or as, uh, your dad calls it, Chipote. The Potle sometimes. I'm gonna take another bite of this, pull it back on. The, the, uh, mac and cheese, very good, but not, like, something I need to make a phone call about. It features cavatappi pas- Read that. I'm chewing. Featuring cavatappi pasta mixed with a creamy cheddar and American cheese sauce, topped with toasted bread crumbs. The bread crumbs are nice. It has a little bit of a homemade vibe to it. I appreciate the cavatappi Okay. Um, it's good mac and cheese. Hmm. Hmm. I… You hear my stomach? Yeah. Does that mean I should st- stop, or keep eating? It just went, "Brr." It went, "Brr." It was, like, sh- downshifting, trying to, trying to start working through this mac and cheese. This is definitely better than, uh, than the Shake Shack fries any day of the week. You don't- But do they not have tater tots? You don't like the cr- crinkle cut. Mm-mm. Does Shake Shack have tater tots, Chase? I don't think so. I'm double-checking. I don't know why I thought they might, but I'm pretty sure they don't. White House barbecue. The first ever White House barbecue is held, serving smoked brisket to foreign guests and elevating barbecue to the national culinary stage. Smoked brisket? Okay. Mm. Then that's gonna be late 1800s, early 1900s at the, at the earliest They do have onion rings, but no tater tots And the reason I know that- That early? Like- They might have brought it in … when did they build the White House? Well, the White House was probably built, like, around the founding of the country or shortly thereafter, 'cause I know Washington was in it at some point. But- Washington was in part of it? … barbecue, you might know this if you know a little bit of barbecue history, but, like, so American barbecue, we owe that to, uh, you know, African slaves who basically, they were given the bad cuts of meat, which is the fatty cuts of meat, like brisket is, is a prime one. Hmm. Or, like, a pork butt, and they cooked it very slow in order to cause it, the fat to render, and that basically started barbecue culture. So the White House taking a brisket, a smoked brisket, up until they basically got that from the African slaves, there's no way that they would've even known about it. I don't know what year that happened, but I think this, I mean, I just feel like this is… When did that transfer happen? I don't know, but I would say the 1800s. Ooh, I got some. Okay. All right. Well, we don't need to know everything. We don't need to know everything. We just need to put it in a relative order. But I do need to finish this sandwich. I want my baby back. Chili's airs their first commercials debuting the iconic I Want My Baby Back Ribs jingle. This is after the McRib, I feel like. Don't you think? Boy, that's a t- this is a tough one. This might be the toughest thing we've done all day. Remember, like last year, the recording of this jingle surfaced online and I'm, and the, like, the acapella group that did it, I think they definitely look very '80s. But it also could be early '90s. You know how the '90s now to us starts to feel really old? As we feel old Late '80s. McRib's earlier You think it's mid-'80s? Okay. It, think about the way it looks. I mean, I don't think, I, well, I think they're both '80s. Hmm. Come back to it. Barbecue chips. I finished the sandwich. Snack company Herr's- So it can be done, just in case you were wondering … is the first to introduce barbecue potato chips to the US. It can be done in, like, eight minutes Okay … could've done it faster really. I was just slowing it down for y'all Barbecue chips. Obviously we're on this side of the mic, but we're probably right here. Who knows? Barbecue chips Who knows what's gonna go there … '70s Uh, might be '60s … earlier, earlier. '50s maybe even. '50s. Barbecue chicken pizza. Pizza chef Ed LaDou collaborates with Wolfgang Puck, that's a hint, to create the first ever barbecue chicken pizza for the California Pizza Kitchen menu, and boy is it a standard. Wow, they invented it for California Pizza Kitchen? That had to be '90s, right? This is after I Want My Baby Back, yeah. That's what I'm feeling about it. Strong, strong feelings about that one. Stonehenge barbecue. By analyzing residue on pottery shards and animal bones, a team of archaeologists uncover evidence that the humans who built Stonehenge organized feasts featuring barbecue style roasting. Well, this is earlier than Columbus. And the White House. Okay, there we go. It's beautiful. I'm gonna read it closer. So it- Is that all of them? Okay. We, we're actually, if you read that one again, what, what we're trying to get is what, when did the archeologists uncover- Oh … the evidence? Well- 'Cause I, I think otherwise it'd be very clearly the first. Oh. When did the archeologists uncover the evidence? A team of archeologists. Discovered that it had been- So we gotta have- Yeah … a team of archeologists. You know, the earliest archeologists only worked solo. Lone wolves. So we have to go back to the time when archeologists started teaming up. The first archeologist team was a husband and wife team. Mm-hmm. Mr. and Mrs. Harry and… Scary Giles. Yeah. Mr. and Mrs. Harry and Scary Giles. Yeah. Hey, oh, you do know some things. Yep. Well, I know that thing. And the way that they would work together is that he would find the bone, and then she would clean the bone. Sounds scary, doesn't it? Yeah. Okay, so they analyzed residue on pottery shards and animal bones. Well, we, we have no idea. They were barbecuing at the stone age? Yeah, the, the point is you don't know any of these. Uh… Well, obviously it's, they don't want it to… It's not, it's, it was after that. And it was after this. But it was, I mean, they, this is the type of thing that they didn't figure out until after- Pre- pretty recent … barbecued chips were developed. Pretty recent. After barbecued chips, for sure. Yeah. I'm feeling like that right there. You gonna eat all that mac and cheese? No, no, I'm stopping short on this one, but I'm gonna get a lot in this bite. Tell us more about that mac and cheese as we figure out exactly how many you have right. Mm. I think it tastes like something that you might have at a family reunion. I really wanna know if you're going to go to Shake Shack and get this rib sandwich. I, I just feel like- No … it's a little too expensive. The thing you may not- And, and we've already had it … know about me is that I typically don't eat the way that I eat on this show in my normal life. I'm not saying I won't get a burger every once in a while. But I just- You have- … can't imagine a scenario that I'm gonna go- … one correct. We have one correct? Congratulations. Oh, come on. That can't be true. It is true. Well, just, we just need to shift everything. You know? Well, Christopher Columbus making contact with tribes. W- we're talking four- 1400s. Yeah, how could, how could we only have one correct? Is this the only one we have correct? Yes. The, the weird thing is- Okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, I, I, I get… The White House Barbecue Foreign guests. Okay, White House Barbecue's later Than barbecued chips? Mm-hmm So we move those two, switch those two. This is a wild card. And if- Stonehenge Barbecue happened the, it's the most recent This has to be the most recent thing. And now we have all of them correct You have two wrong. Oh, we have two wrong Did we get McRib and baby back wrong? Is that what happened to us? Maybe. That's what I was trying to tell you. Okay, so let's make that switch, and then before we find out that we're, that we're right, let's say the n- the, the, the years, the d- this exact years. Of these two. I Want My Baby Back, 19- '89 and this McRib was 1990. Whoa, they're that close. Mm-hmm. Okay. You guys now have three wrong. Golly. Put those back. Put those back. Well, hold on. One of these is now… We had two wrong. No, we had two wrong, and we just made another one wrong. So now… But wouldn't we have two… Hold on. What just happened? How would we have… 'Cause that would be t- Hm … two wrong that then became two right. So these must be correct. It must be something else. You think the barbecue chicken pizza was before- Uh, now I have th- three Move barbecue chicken and Stonehenge I mean, this can go anywhere. The archeologist can go anywhere. Guys, you have three wrong. A different three? I mean, one of a different three, man. It's, it's over there. We've done some, done something wrong over here. But we changed stuff over here- Yep … and we ended up… We went from two… Oh, I know what we did Dink, the McRib is before the White House barbecue? The White House barbecue could have been any time. It could have been- It might have been Obama who did it. You know, you, you don't, there's no- Yeah, I bet you- You don't know. You don't know … I bet you it goes all the way- It might be- … I bet you it goes right here it might be right here. It could be right here. Yeah, but then that moves too many. No, that's, uh, we're 100% right now. I had it and then you did that one last switch and now you've got four wrong. All right, I'm about to give up. We're getting worse. So this and this, and then This and this. So just that. White House Barbecue here Four- No, five wrong … five wrong. Okay, Chase, just tell us what the right answers are. All right. All right, so I made it four. Okay, so in 1492, Christopher Columbus makes contact with the Taino tribe. Then next is in 1958, snack company Herr's is the first to introduce barbecue potato chips. Chips. Mm-hmm. In 1964- Wait, wait, wait. 1964- That's gonna be, that's gonna be White House … White House barbecue. The White House first ever barbecue is held. Yes. Right. What's the next year? Yeah. 1981. 1981. Ooh, that could be Stonehenge Barbecue. I think it's Stonehenge Barbecue. No, let's go with McRib. You think '81? I mean, I don't know. We, it could be '81. We were over there in Buies Creek. We didn't… Things came late. All right. McRib, '81. 1981, McDonald's debuts the McRib. Yes. Yes. 1985. Oh, oh, oh, oh. I want my baby back. Hold on. But we, what… I want my baby back. I'm not singing it, I'm just saying it. Pizza chef Ed LaDou collaborates with Wolfgang Puck- Yeah, brother, say we would've b- we would've gotten that one for barbecue pizza. So California Pizza Chicken existed- That's CPK … chichen, chichen, existed in 1981? California Pizza Chicken. In 1985, at least. 1985. Yeah. Wow. And, and, and Puck was doing stuff already. So, so I want- He's old … my baby back, 1990. Chili's first airs commercials debuting iconic baby back ribs jingle in 1990. Yes. Yeah, 1990. So we were- My little victory … 1990. I said '70 and you said- Almost- Yeah … a decade apart. Almost a decade apart, the McRib and the… What? 1990 what? Seven. Oh. Oh, it's '97? That wasn't… Then it was a little defeat. It was a big defeat for me. So what about Stonehenge? And so now you d- just changed things and they're too wrong. Oh, they were right? He was right, though. 2003. In 2003- A team … plus a bunch of other years, 'cause it's 2015. Ooh, so recent. The, yep, the team of ac- archaeologists, that's when they finally worked together. Who worked for the barbecue man. But it was a husband and wife team. Sure. And the, and the way that it worked was- Sure … say it, he would find the bone and she would clean it, right? That's what it says in the official wiki, right, Chase? Yes, that is exactly what it says in the wiki. Ha. A little victory. And it was- And then they opened up a restaurant called Stonehenge Barbecue. Yes. Harry and Scary Giles, right? Harry and Scary, yeah, but they're both spelt like you spell Terry. It's E-R-R-Y. Yeah. Oh, well, you didn't have to say that. I just thought it was weird. All right. Is it still a thing for people to, like, go and update Wikipedia entries that are… and make them wrong? That's your mission. I, I'm not gonna do it. I want y'all to do it. Get your copy of our kids' book, Spaghetti Head and Chicken Fingers, now at mythicalbooks.com.
