We went foraging for tacos in the wilderness.
Let's talk about that.
Good Mythical Morning.
Link and I may look like two tough, rugged
outdoorsmen, but looks can be deceiving.
This hair, hours of gel and hairspray.
This beard, purely cosmetic.
Link, he's afraid of the sky.
We aren't exactly survival experts.
Like, apparently nature has a
bunch of stuff that you can eat.
Mm-hmm.
And not only that, but apparently
there's also a bunch of stuff in
nature that you shouldn't eat.
Mm. Or it'll kill you.
So naturally, pun intended, we teamed up
with local foraging expert Jess Starwood
to see if she could help us rustle up
wild-grown ingredients to make a killer
taco, and also a literally killer taco.
To the wilderness.
Ah.
Oh, yeah.
Ah.
I've been bound and gagged and blindfolded
and knocked out and helicoptered in to this
extremely remote location, and I have no
clue where I'm at, and I am faced with the
task of having to forage for my very life.
If only I had a companion to make
me feel safer in this environment.
Amazing structure here.
All natural.
Who goes there?
Oh my God, come take a look at this.
In order to pass through my
bridge, you must answer my riddle.
What is black and white and red all over?
A newspaper?
A bloody panda.
You shall not pass.
Rhett.
Oh.
It's me, Link.
Is that you?
Ah.
Oh, I'm so glad.
You were…
i'm so glad to see you.
I know, dude.
No, I've been looking for you for three days.
Ah.
Which explains how crazed you are.
Yeah, I need to change my underwear.
Oh, that's what we're doing.
We're making the foraging video.
That's right.
You know what we should do?
We should forage for the forager.
Hello?
Hello?
Ah.
Yeah.
I bet you're a forager.
I sure am.
I bet your name is Jess.
That's me.
Jess, I'm Link.
This is Rhett.
We've been bound, gagged, blindfolded,
dropped from a helicopter, and-
I was a troll for three days.
Yep.
And here we are.
Well, sounds like we've had a rough time.
We're gonna forage for some stuff.
Yeah.
I don't give high fives.
I just, I…
I do secret handshakes.
Okay.
Thank you for joining us.
Mm-hmm.
Okay, so this is what you do, right?
Like, you, you're a, a mycologist for real?
This is what I do, yep.
I- And this is what I do.
I find stuff.
Hey.
The stick.
Sorry.
We don't need to bring, bring your
stick into this conversation right now.
Yeah, yeah.
We're learning about what Jess does.
I am listening to Jess.
Good, because that's gonna be
really, really important today.
We are going to be looking at and tasting
a lot of different things, and some of
them are extremely, extremely deadly.
You mean, like, how, like
how quickly would it kill us?
One of the plants, um, probably
maybe, like, 20 minutes or so when
it's, you start to feel effects.
And, like, it's- That'll fit.
That'll fit.
That'll fit in a half hour episode.
Yeah.
We, we're gonna have to
eat it early, I guess.
Yeah.
The goal if I understand it, is
that we are actually making a,
a dish by the end of this thing.
Yeah.
We're going to transform these
ingredients into something that looks
good and tastes good, and not die.
Uh, just, just a couple
things to be aware of.
I'm not the smart one.
I've gathered that.
But neither is he.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Right?
If that makes you feel good.
Let's talk about, like, what
we're looking for with mushrooms.
Sometimes they're really obvious and
they stick out like that one right there.
So that's a mushroom.
That is a poisonous mushroom
called a jack-o'-lantern mushroom.
Looks like holly.
Uh, that's an oak tree.
Okay.
Yeah, it's the, it's right next to it.
So, oak trees are good.
We don't wanna pull that out.
He just touched it.
It's okay.
It's not the poison oak,
it's just regular oak.
Like, you can-
No, he just touched the mushroom.
I didn't touch it.
Yeah, he did.
I watched you.
You, he touched it with his index finger.
I touched it with my right hand, and I'm
only gonna use this hand for touching things.
So you have 20 minutes.
No, I don't.
I'm gonna wipe it on the rock.
We'll start here.
Mushrooms are not poisonous to touch.
We are gonna hold and touch the
deadliest mushrooms in the world today.
Oh, gosh.
So you can touch that one all you want.
Like, nice and- Just don't eat
it and don't lick your fingers?
A lot of people are more afraid of
mushrooms than they are of plants,
but that's not a good perspective to
have because, like I said, you can
touch all of these deadly mushrooms.
Mm-hmm.
But deadly plants, pr- you're,
it's not gonna be a, a good time.
Should I pick it?
If you want.
We don't wanna just take
the whole thing, right?
'Cause if we take the whole
thing, then it can't…
That's not the whole thing.
That's the fruit of the mushroom.
This thing, it probably goes three
miles in every direction, right?
Correct.
So- Ha.
Yeah, so this is just like
the apple off of a tree.
Mm-hmm.
Straight back.
Underground here is the mycelium, which
is actually the organism of the mushroom.
And so when conditions are right, it
has enough water, food, sunlight, and
it's super happy and it's ready to
reproduce, it sends up a mushroom.
Picking that actually is helpful because
it's gonna spread spores to procreate.
So it's, this is poisonous?
So it's poisonous.
It's not deadly.
It'll give you a stomach
ache and you'll, I mean-
L- little diarrhea?
L- lots.
Lots of diarrhea?
And you'll kind of, like, maybe wish-
Link's kinda into that.
Oh.
He gets stopped up.
His problem is it's, it gets stopped up.
It'll clear you out very well.
Yeah.
Yeah, it'll probably just make me regular.
Yeah, try it.
I'm just gonna break it open.
Ooh.
Yeah.
These are gonna be tempting.
So these actually glow in the dark.
What?
You want me to blow?
No, I want it to glow.
Oh.
Just give me a little breeze.
Why did you blow in my…
A little, a little belly breeze.
Why'd you do that?
You wanna take a look?
That was so inappropriate.
I'm good.
Okay.
We could also take some with us because we
are going to make a very deadly dish today.
So we're gonna make one we can
eat, and we're gonna make one
that we should definitely not eat.
Correct.
And we're not gonna get them mixed up.
Yeah, that's the idea.
What would a troll do?
I think I see some in here, so I wanna-
Some what?
Some mushrooms.
Oh, I thought like little
fairies or something.
I don't know.
Okay.
Well, you might find those.
I don't know.
I'm going to give you
guys some mushroom knives.
Uh- Well, you're gonna
give me a mushroom knife.
Yeah.
Here you go.
Yes, I'll take a mushroom knife.
Do I trust him?
No.
Yes.
No.
Yes.
No.
Yes, yes, yes.
I, I have kids.
I know how this works.
Yeah, you do.
Yeah, yeah.
You're looking at one.
Fine.
Okay.
There you go.
That is sharp.
Yeah, you can't, he can't have that.
No.
And why, why's it got a little mohawk?
That is if the, you have, um, dirt,
'cause mushrooms live in the dirt.
You wanna brush off any debris.
Like an archeologist.
Yeah.
This is-
Kind of something like that
…
For mushrooms.
All right, get in there.
Get yourself a mushroom.
Well, what is this?
Here's a bag.
If you find something,
you can put it in here.
It's kind of like an Easter egg hunt.
Now, first of all, what, that's, that's bad.
Oh, this is poison oak.
And- Are you serious?
Yes.
Yeah.
At, duh, uh, uh, don't touch.
I'm not gonna touch it.
This is poison oak.
Yes.
Leaves of three, thee must flee.
Not for me.
What is it?
Or leave it be.
Leave it be.
Leaves of three, don't touch me.
I'm gonna get up here.
As he literally just made contact with it.
Like, you lit- No, I didn't.
Yes, you did.
I, I didn't touch it.
No, your pants did.
My pants?
Yeah, your pants now have poison oak.
Yeah, just find the mushrooms, man.
All right, I see one from up here.
I'm gonna use my mushroom knife as instructed
Whoa.
Now, is this a good one or a bad one?
So this one, it's all white.
Which means it's all right.
No.
So white mushrooms are gonna be the
ones you really wanna be careful about.
So this one-
Figures
…
I don't see things on there that
tells me that it is one of the deadly
ones, but we'll take it back and
compare it to some of the other ones.
Is a light brushing, is that acceptable?
Yeah.
Oh, you cut, you cut that one at-
Oh, gosh … at the cap, dude.
You gotta do better than that.
What part do I want?
This part or this part, or both?
Why'd you smell it?
Why'd you smell it, Rhett?
Oh, there's a worm on there.
We're, we're out here seeing if these
are poisonous or not, first thing
you did was put it in your nose.
None of them are poisonous to smell, right?
No.
Okay.
All right.
Yeah, I knew that.
Get some of those spores in there.
So this is the Amanita Velosa,
or the springtime Amanita.
I'm gonna need another one of
those, 'cause it's fine, right?
That's how it works.
So- Right?
Yep.
Amanita is the group of mushrooms,
or family of mushrooms, that
contain some of the deadliest-
Uh-oh.
The tastiest, and the kinda trippy ones, too.
Oh, a little bit of all of the above.
Amanita does it all.
Have you ever seen anybody do
the breast stroke technique?
The doggy just took a dooky technique?
You're right, I didn't think
it was gonna be this difficult.
Oh, I see one.
You just put your hand down there.
It could've gotten cut off
with my mushroom knife.
Well, it didn't, dude.
Okay, that's another Amanita.
Ooh.
So, yeah.
Can you tell that's the
same as the one we just got?
I can tell it's the same.
It's the same exact one.
You didn't finish the doggy thing.
So the dog will p- poop like that.
I- if the legs are shaking, you
know, you know it's a good one.
Yeah, that's an anal gland problem.
First of all, what if there's a mushroom
under there, you completely ruined it?
Good point, and that's something
I wanted to mention, is that-
Yeah, now's a good time.
…Ethical mushroom hunting, we wanna
try to leave the- Yeah … forest
floor as undisturbed as possible.
Well, I mean, you hadn't said that.
I mean, I… That's why I was going easy,
'cause my natural instinct is to do things in
a normal way that respects people and nature.
Yeah.
Unlike my friend here.
You wanna- Got in there and doggy'd it up.
You wanna hug it out?
I do not wanna hug you right now.
Let's move on to the next spot.
Okay.
Is it just because you don't believe in him?
I mean, prove me wrong.
My head's feeling a little itchy.
Is that something?
Uh- Yeah, poison oak … yeah,
it could be poison oak.
But it usually sets in a couple days later.
Leaves of three, do not eat.
Let it be.
All right.
And I see a big white
mushroom right there, so.
Oh.
Whoa, whoa, whoa.
Don't, don't … Let's leave it where it is.
W- in, in wildlife documentaries, you
get down around something and then you
talk about it before you just pluck it.
Tell me some cool things about
it so I can then say it to the
camera la- like you didn't say it.
Now, you see this mushroom right here?
Yeah.
It's got gills that are white, and it's
white all around, which I don't know, but
it makes me think that this might be one
of the deadliest mushrooms in the world.
The deadliest.
Mm-hmm.
Mm-hmm.
The deadliest mushroom in the
world grows in California.
It does, and it's been spreading all across
the country, um, all across the northern
hemisphere, and it's popping up in places
that it hasn't been seen before, so.
So what, what's the, like,
colloquial common name of this thing?
Like, what does the common man call this?
This is the death cap.
Oh, this is the death cap.
The death cap.
This is the one that you
hear about that people, like-
Everybody's hearing, uh, about it in the
news right now, and it's been killing people.
And in rap songs.
There's a lot of references to cap.
Like capping and-
But I can touch it?
You can touch it.
Pluck it, man.
So let's pick it and see all of it
up close, just to be sure what it is.
Keep it together.
Whoa, y- why are you grabbing it like that?
It's, it's fragile, man.
Yeah, yeah, you're bursting it.
People are dying because this is
similar to one that you can eat?
It's very similar.
Well, oh, yeah, okay.
And 'cause I, I mean, we're looking
at ones that are different sizes,
but I assume that this could be
smaller or this could be bigger.
Correct.
That kinda thing.
Yeah.
So they both have the white gills
that you were talking about.
My favorite white gill is Vince.
Go rest high upon that mountain, Vince.
People will just eat these.
Ooh.
Like, they, they cook them and does
the cooking, uh, get rid of the poison?
Not at all.
What about sniffing it?
You can sniff it, yeah.
It's got a strong scent.
It smells like a-
Oh, actually it does.
Well, yeah, y- what, what, what
am I doing, just saying things?
Well, yeah, y- whoa, uh, you might-
I mean, it smells like a mushroom.
You might be capping.
I'm not capping, man.
You might be capping.
I do remember you saying that I could put
the most deadliest mushroom in my mouth-
N- n- no, I, I didn't say it.
I, I, no, I didn't
… and then spit it out.
Not about this one.
It, it depends on who you are.
Does it?
You said, you said you could put it in
your mouth as long as you didn't ingest it.
Let's not give people ideas.
Hey, why don't … Hey,
hey, let's just do this.
Maybe this is just as satisfying.
Watch this.
Now that we're touching it, is
there poison on our fingers?
Well, first of all, poison oak
leg is touching my leg right now.
They are very deadly.
If you eat these, you'll get
a stomach ache initially.
You'll probably go to the bathroom.
You'll not feel well.
You feel like you've had,
uh, some food poisoning.
But then you get better, and you're
like, "Oh, it was … I'm fine.
It was no big deal." Oh, stinky.
I think it's, like, 24, 36 hours
later, your, uh, kidneys, your liver
stop working and shutting down.
That's no good.
And at that point- Start
bleeding out your eyeballs?
No, you're just organ failure.
You know, I mean- At that point,
you might go to the doctor.
And that, at that point,
you're, it's too late.
Ooh.
Um, so you have to catch it early and know
what you had put in your mushroom soup.
And how much?
How much of this could do that?
Probably, like, half a cap.
What?
Yeah.
Could kill a human?
Yeah.
What about, uh, cows or deer or lizards?
Do they die from this?
Yeah, so if dogs get ahold of one of
these, they're gonna have the same effects.
So definitely keep an eye out for your pets.
They show up in landscaping and
urban areas, too, so- Yeah, I
definitely feel like I've seen these.
It's, it's a possibility.
I've seen… This is, like,
the worst year we've had yet.
I'm trying to remember
what the, it looks like.
And it's just because it's warm.
It's getting warmer, and that, there,
that's why there's more of them?
Yeah.
I'll put it in my basket,
and we'll cook it up later.
Okay.
Okay.
I just can't believe that me- And
we're sniffing it off our fingers.
Putting my fingers in my mouth
wouldn't be a bad idea right now.
But I'm not gonna do it.
I think it, it would be a bad idea.
So here- What are we looking for here?
We are here because of the oak trees.
Oak trees are amazing hosts for mushrooms.
They form these mycorrhizal relationships,
meaning symbiotic relations.
I've heard about this.
Yes.
The trees and the mushrooms
talk to each other.
They do.
You ever heard this?
Yeah.
No.
So they form these mutualistic relationships
where they're sharing resources and
helping each other sustain life.
It's kind of like a good example of
how we should be living in the world.
It's like a partnership.
Yeah.
The oak tree and the mushroom.
Exactly.
The oak tree, yeah, I mean, you're tall, he's
short, so… Well, I wouldn't say I'm short.
Well, I mean, y- you know, relatively.
From what I'm seeing here.
You want a spot?
And, and slightly shuffle.
I got one.
Oh.
Now, you don't have to come to me.
You can go find your own.
Okay.
I mean, I was interested.
Oh, now this is a white one.
I found one that's bigger than
the one that you're getting.
Ooh.
That is a thickie, I'll
tell you that much, though.
So this one, it looks white here,
all white, but then under here
you're seeing that peach colored-
Oh.
Yes … cap.
So this- And that tells me I can eat it.
Pretty much.
This is a hot spot.
Are these the same two, are these
the same mushrooms, it's just
one goes up and one comes down?
This one's younger.
So when they start out, they're more like
this, kind of like a little egg shaped.
Mm-hmm.
And as their gills and spores are
developing, they s- open up, they open up.
I never knew that mushrooms changed that way.
They sure do.
As they get older, they- Yeah … they raise.
So do they, do they taste different?
The mature ones can, as they age, this
species gets a little on the fishy side.
Um- Oh, we don't want that.
No.
So this is good to eat?
Yeah.
You mind if we do a little taste?
'Cause it- Go for it.
But how big of a bite?
Um, I would do a- Oh … start
with, start with a small one.
Oh, it is fishy.
Y- you need to feed these
mushrooms more pineapple.
How do you know 100%?
I know.
Uh.
Uh uh uh uh.
Doesn't work that fast.
Well, first of all, they smell
different than the, the other one.
Ta- ta- taste it.
Taste that fish.
It's definitely not as good as that
one, but it's not overwhelming.
I did take a smaller bite, though.
There is no one way to look at a
mushroom and see one, one feature
and be like, "Hey, that's a poisonous
mushroom." You're gonna look at all
different features of the mushroom.
You found another This is a baddie.
Hmm.
What tells you that?
It's, it's white, and it's completely white.
I do not see the- Brush off the
top … I do not see the universal veil.
It's this part, the bottom part.
Yeah, exactly.
It's got, like, it, it's got a
little… It's coming out of something.
Mm-hmm.
That is the destroying angel.
The destroying angel.
The destroying angel.
That was my nickname in high school.
What would happen to Link if he ate this?
Same thing as the death cap.
I'm no angel.
So eating a quarter of this could kill a man?
Yeah.
I do wanna nibble it.
But no, no you don't.
Why would you do that?
It's crazy that that one, th-
this one's growing here, and then
right beside it is something else.
And then there's just one in there.
Yep.
One in there, and then you're dying.
Exactly.
But, I mean, I've just spent an afternoon
with Jess, and I was able to point
that out, you know what I'm saying?
You just gotta listen.
I think we've mixed up our baskets a bit.
Uh- This was the- This is the bad basket?
Yeah.
Bad basket.
I mean, it did touch my goo- Tasty sack.
I'm running out of room in my pouch
because Link's pouch is already in there.
Well, I… Let's go find some plants.
Okay.
Hell yeah.
Jess, what is your opinion
on peeing outdoors?
Hold on.
Did you just do that?
I just picked that.
No, I'm just asking Link,
did he pee outdoors?
Jess is peeing right now.
Look the other way.
Okay.
All right.
Sorry.
I assume you're pro peeing outdoors.
Uh, yes.
Okay.
What if the outdoors is a gravel
strip on a very small part of your
yard right outside your own home?
Um, okay.
So well, you just picked something.
I did.
So this is a plant called… Okay.
Eat?
You can… Oh, oh, hold, hold, hold on.
Hold on.
There's a couple extra in there
that we're gonna take those out
Well, I just
I… Salad.
It's salad.
Salad.
When you come out in a place like this,
do you just see salad, salad, salad?
Like, you're just constantly-
Salad … seeing salad?
Here, what about some of this?
That's poison oak.
That's poison oak.
I knew that.
You told me earlier.
Mm-hmm.
Mm-hmm.
See?
Oh, okay, you, here's a fun one.
So this one is called stinging nettle.
Since you have gloves on,
I'll let you handle it.
Oh, okay.
Eat it?
Unless you like a lot of hypodermic needles
in your mouth, I would probably not.
So how do you make it not stinging,
and how are we gonna eat it?
When you cook them- Oh … or heat
them or dry them, those little needles
will break down and no longer hurt you.
It's one of the most nutritious
plants that you can eat.
H- I hear a plane.
I think this is our
opportunity to be rescued.
We're only eating salad.
Hey, help us.
I thought you were saying that
like, "Don't worry about us. We're
only eating salad." We'll be fine.
But you were like, "I'm only eating salad,
so therefore I need to be rescued." Okay.
Uh, so we need, we wanna keep that.
We wanna keep that.
We're gonna keep that, but if you are
brave, you can… I am not brave as you.
Look at you with the hypodermic
needles in your mouth.
Well- Yeah, so- … you build up a tolerance.
It, I don't mind the sting of these.
They're not too bad.
All right, fine.
We'll eat it.
Oh.
Oh.
Got you on the lip?
Oh, it got me on the lip, dude.
Oh, no.
Oh.
You ain't playing.
The plant that fights back.
My whole roof of my mouth.
Yeah.
You're not getting that?
Yes.
Yes, I am.
But it also contains serotonin- My lips
… which is the happy- I am happy right now.
It contains serotonin?
It does.
I'm so happy that my mouth is hurting.
Uh-huh.
It's all right.
We'll get some more here.
Maybe some of this.
Actually, yes.
We'll- Ah, see?
Good job.
This is one of my favorite herbs to use.
It's called bur shervel.
It's a wild- Bur shervel?
Bur shervel.
We went to high school with him.
Yeah, nice.
Bur shervel.
Bur shervel.
And so this is a member of the carrot family,
uh, parsley family, related to cilantro.
And it looks very, very
similar to poison hemlock.
Eat it?
Yeah, you can eat this one.
Hold on.
It looks very similar to poison hemlock?
It does.
Hemlock, that's like Shakespearean.
That's the plant that killed Socrates.
Should I eat this?
Uh, yeah.
I ate a little bit.
It tastes like carrots.
There's a little bit of carrot taste.
He's not wrong.
I know.
You wanna grab some more nettle- Oh.
Oh, yeah … since you
have your gloves on there.
Plenty of nettle.
Loads.
That's not nettle.
Th- there's a plant called not nettle?
Oh, nettle.
Yeah.
I see it right here.
There, let's put that in here.
We're gonna collect some
poison oak while we're here.
Oh, yeah, 'cause we're making poison tacos.
Duh.
This is it, right?
That is it.
So that is poison.
Poison.
Make a, make a wide hole.
Do not hit Jessie's hands.
I'll be all right.
It's not deadly, but it's a bad weekend.
Depends on where your rash is, I guess.
You don't wanna be driving this into the
cul-de-sac, you know what I'm saying?
That's probably enough for our tacos today.
Do you wanna write on that?
No, I, I know what I'm doing.
She still knows what it is.
Okay.
All right.
I, I'm feeling really uneasy
because my lips are tingling.
You're gonna be okay.
And typically I use that as
a sign of a herpes breakout.
Yep.
Don't touch them.
Don't touch.
Yep, these are poisonous flowers.
And I like to always add extra color
to the foods that I make, but these
ones are poisonous to the touch.
Poisonous to the touch?
Poisonous to the touch.
What are they?
These are called larkspur.
If you were to ingest
this, what would happen?
You would die.
This is- These are, these are deadly?
These are deadly flowers, yeah.
And they're poisonous to the tou- they're-
So you can, yeah, touching them can be- I
just, first, first of all, I just feel, I
don't know, this makes me feel different
about nature, 'cause I love purple.
I feel like I could be on a hike with my
wife and I would be like, "Hey, baby."
I wouldn't tell her to eat this.
Open wide.
But I would be like, "Here, hold this.
Put this in your hair." How often do
pe- people put this in their hair?
And then what would the symptoms be?
If you were to eat this, it would
shut down your muscles and paralyze
you, um, and then end up suffocating.
Great.
I don't believe you.
Let's find out.
No, sir. But we wanna put
this on our poison, uh, tacos?
We are going to add those to our tacos.
Yeah.
I'm excited I actually get to use
poisonous flowers for something.
Yeah, you usually just
point those out and move on.
Yep.
What about these yellow flowers?
Can you eat those?
Uh, you can eat those, yeah.
Huh, broccoli.
Yeah.
Now try these purple ones.
No, no, no, no, no, no.
Nope, nope, no, no, no.
What about just a handful of grass?
Yeah, all grass is edible.
Well, I want a little- What did
you touch with those gloves?
Uh, I touched purple flowers, death flowers.
Okay.
So I don't, I need to dis-
dispose of these gloves.
Uh- Oh, I just touched it.
Oh.
You just touched the- Okay,
I would just- Hold on.
Put- Put your glove back
on … put me in a hazmat suit.
Put me in a hazmat suit right now.
Put your glove back on.
I don't know if I can.
Yeah, I'm gonna be fine.
I'm, I'm, I'm- I'm gonna be okay.
I don't know, I don't know.
Isn't that… Hold on.
I don't… Can we at least stop here?
Is it that she's touching her face?
Is it touching her face, too?
I'm okay.
I didn't touch any- Isn't that…
There's no way that me touching
that thing and then touching my hair
like the Fonz is going to kill me.
I mean, that just can't happen.
That can't happen.
Right?
Yeah.
You'll be fine.
Can't happen.
You'll be fine.
You'll be fine.
Let's get a little closer
to a medical facility.
Oh, so right over here,
so this is poison hemlock.
Oh.
So we're not gonna touch that one.
It looks like parsley.
It looks just like- It
looks like that bush herbal.
Here, we'll compare that real quick.
This is when it gets scary.
It is.
Actually, this gives me nightmares at night.
So if you're looking for bush herbal and
you come across that one- Don't … it
looks very similar to that one.
Especially if they're not
right next to each other.
Now, th- Yeah.
So this one's fuzzier.
Mm-hmm.
It's fuzzier and it's got- This
one's pointier … it's got more,
more little intricate pieces.
But your boy, if it had been a long night
and you were hungry for some salad- Yeah
had a couple to drink.
Yeah.
Mm-hmm.
You might hemlock yourself.
Poison hemlock is one of the
deadliest plants out there.
It paralyzes you from the feet up.
Oh, God.
By the time it gets to your diaphragm,
which is the muscle that contracts
and expands your lungs- Yeah … you
suffocate, but you are completely conscious
and aware during the entire process.
It's not like the mushrooms where you've
got a couple days to figure things out.
This is gonna happen pretty quickly.
You just walked up on this.
Like, this, this is everywhere?
This is everywhere.
This is an invasive species and
you can find… W- uh, uh, uh.
Yeah, 'cause there it is, too.
Yes, there it is right there.
Don't touch it with the good bag.
Now I gotta touch that bag.
Why don't you just move back?
I don't know, man.
I don't know.
I'm not- Why don't you move back?
Okay.
So how bad is it just to touch?
So from what I've read, we
should not be touching it.
I, I don't wanna test the theory.
I don't wanna see what
that point of- I mean, no.
My… Here's the thing.
Now, you're the expert.
I'm just, uh, you know, I just
talk out of my butt for a living.
I just feel like if, uh, touching
this stuff would kill you, there'd
just be dead kids everywhere.
You know what I'm saying?
Like, you'd just come- Sad … you, you
would just come out to a place and there
would be dead dogs and kids and old people.
I mean, some middle-aged people.
Mm-hmm.
Just everywhere.
Well, people don't come outside as much as
they used to- That's true … for one thing.
And now we're gonna cook this stuff?
Yep.
What comes after foraging?
Eating.
Nope.
Uh- Cooking?
Cooking.
Oh.
We're gonna do some cooking.
Now, all the bad stuff is on this side.
All the good stuff is on that side.
On this side.
We're gonna make some tacos.
I feel like we should switch because if Link
is gonna help on this side, we already know
we're not gonna eat anything that Link makes.
So let's just- Well … make this consistent.
But now I'm handling all the deadly things.
Yes.
Yeah.
Two for one for me.
So don't put anything… Don't put
anything in your mouth over here.
I'm not gonna put anything
in my mouth over here.
All right.
I like to make my tortillas a
little bit healthier if I can.
It's a traditional corn tortilla,
but I'm adding some nettle into
it because it's so nutritious.
First of all, we want to make sure
all of those needles are deactivated.
Yes.
So by doing that, what we do is just put
them quickly into some boiling water here.
I, I don't need your help to glove up, man.
Look, let, let Stevie try.
I don't even think it would work.
Like, it does work.
That works.
You know what?
We should be doctor.
Two men, one doctor.
So I wanna get a ball about that size.
Yeah.
That looks great.
Making biscuits basically.
Yeah.
Aw, yeah.
All right.
Dang, look at that.
Good work, us.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
If I just take that- Nope,
nope, nope … I can cur-
I can make it smaller.
Nope, nope, nope, nope.
That's actually really good.
Yes.
Hand up He's a good glover.
This is crazy that this is happening.
I've never done this.
You ever, you ever seen anybody do this?
You've never done this?
I've never done this.
Make a poison oak tortilla?
Boy, if you rub that on you- Oh, you're-
you will be, you're gonna be in a pickle.
That's crazy.
We're putting the poison in the
biscuit batter to make tortillas.
Oh, my goodness.
Probably want to- I hope that- Oh … this
isn't being filmed- This is good?
… because we could be implicated.
Ooh.
Can, can you turn this on?
I'm so nervous right now.
You're nervous.
I, nope.
No, I'm, I'm not nervous at all.
I'm nervous for you.
I'm good.
So you're just gonna
make one of the bad ones?
Yeah, 'cause we're not actually
gonna eat- Because why not, right?
Yeah.
The death tortilla is ripening.
Well, maybe you would die from this one.
Yeah.
But this is what's gonna kill you.
These guys over here.
I got the perfect bag for the
batter that we don't need.
Oh, you're not… Oh, okay.
Yeah, bat- bowl and everything, huh?
Oh.
I'm glove man and bio
boy and half of a doctor.
Eh, well- So that's done … and
you're the, the evil witch.
And the evil witch.
Yeah.
That's right.
So would you like to cut
the- The poisonous mushrooms.
Yes.
Yes, I would.
The poisonous mu- I will glove you.
It would be my honor to be gloved by you.
And then that- This
is … that's, that's the thumb.
This is… Yep.
Yeah.
This is the- See how hard it is?
It i- Well, yeah.
There we go.
All right.
Live, laugh, glove.
That's us.
And did you hear that my glove
just made a little fart sound?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Okay, so chop these up.
You want them somewhat like that.
So I'm gonna stop here.
Yep.
These are the most deadly
mushrooms in the world.
And- And here I am with a
knife- Yeah … chopping them.
Yep.
Now, the steam that's coming off of
Link's poisonous mushrooms- Yeah … if
he breathes that in, he'll be fine.
He'll be fine.
Okay.
Well, I am holding my breath.
Mushrooms are like the meat of the forest.
They are.
Except for all the animals there.
The wind is blowing from
non-poisonous across poisonous.
That's the, the wind direction you want.
Yeah, we, we set this up.
I think Dylan might enjoy
the, your taco, right?
Dylan's used to us trying to kill him.
I mean, he's a, he's a vegan.
I'm making this one for you, Dyl-wad.
Ooh, look at what you did.
Finished this one.
Make a little salsa.
Made a little salsa with tomatoes,
onion, and garlic and lime.
And then we're going to… What- Yeah.
D- just- Maybe, maybe just-
No … maybe put that on the side.
No, no.
You're not gonna put the salsa on the side.
You don't do salsa?
I like salsa.
I just don't like, um- Yeah,
you'll be fine … tomatoes.
You'll be fine, because the alternative
is eating something that will kill you.
I'm t- I'm touching, I'm using this part.
Take your gla- I think you can
just… Well- Take my glasses off?
No.
Okay.
One second.
We're gonna have you put that taco
or that- Stakes is high, y'all.
You wonder why I kind of
backed out a second ago.
You put me over here on this.
Yeah, I did.
Like, y- you put me in harm's way.
I was like, "He'll love it. He'll
get over there, he'll become a
witch. Everything will be perfect."
Uh- Do you see that the troll's
plan is coming in to fruition?
Um- He failed the riddle,
and now he must die.
Jess must die with him?
What?
Wait, what?
I don't wanna die, too.
I got kids.
So- Hey, this is beautiful.
How can you not eat that?
Look at that.
Yeah, well just f- you're about to find out.
I just want you to know that that could kill.
That could kill t- three people could die.
Hold on.
Let's add more to it that could kill.
Let's make it more deadly.
And then that fork, that fork's gotta go.
Sick of forking that fork.
Oh, yeah, add those larkspur.
It's made with such care, you might
feel guilty about not eating it.
And look, just straight
up hemlock on top of it.
Oh, my gosh.
This is crazy.
This is a nightmare taco.
Man, you- You got that witch in you?
You definitely could get
somebody to- Probably.
You got that evil witch in you?
You could get somebody to take a bite.
It's a possibility.
So this has poison oak tortilla.
Death cap and destroying angel mushrooms
Poison hemlock and larkspur flowers.
It's good.
And tomatoes.
Eat it.
And tomatoes and avocados.
Princess, this is for you.
So we've got a, uh, good taco in front
of, uh, Link that is totally edible that
he can enjoy, and then we've got the
two bad tacos in front of me and Jess.
We can't eat these.
We've just gotta look at 'em.
And watch Link eat the bad taco.
No, you got it backwards.
The reason why I know this is the deadly
taco, and it is extremely deadly, is
because a, while we set it down, a
bird doo-doo'd right here- Yeah … in,
beside it in an attempt to let us know.
Nature itself was telling
us- Yeah … do not eat this.
It's the circle of life.
But now what's going on?
'Cause hold on.
They- And then- Hold, hold, hold a second.
They both have purple flowers.
They both have this little leaf.
They both have mushrooms.
Right, and there's two on the bad
side and one on the good side.
One on the good side.
Yeah, so you have the good one.
Now there's- Yeah.
There we go … now there's two on
the good side and one on the bad side.
It's when, when it crosses
the line is when you eat it.
Don't!
You almost hit the plates, man.
Put the bad one over there.
We know which one's the-
Put the bad one over there.
No, I want the good one.
This is the good one and I wanna eat it.
The thing is is that for you they're
both bad 'cause they both have t- tomato.
Exactly.
All right, Jess.
Yes.
They look absolutely beautiful though.
Uh, you know what?
You grab the small one 'cause
Link and I will end up splitting.
I would- Okay … I would like to
see you eat it first, and then I'm
gonna observe you for 12 hours.
All right.
Well, first of all, what would
happen if we ate that one?
The thing that's gonna get you first
is gonna be the poison hemlock.
Within probably 20-something
minutes, um- So then you just
get poison oak on your dead body?
And then, yeah, but you don't have
to even really worry about the
poison oak, which is- And diarrhea?
Yeah.
Like, you'll, you'll be- Oh, that's good news
already done.
Um, so, like, the death cap- But maybe your
kidneys will shut down after you're dead.
I'm really hoping I have
diarrhea after I die though.
You will.
There's so many ways to die here,
even if you pick something off.
Well, it looks like I have a taco,
you have a taco, and you have a taco.
Yeah.
Right.
All right, Link.
I'm gonna take a bite of this
Well, that was a big bite.
You didn't even let her bite first, dude.
No.
I know.
I said I'm gonna watch this.
He was confident.
He nervous.
That's really good.
That is really good.
Man, and it's not poisonous at all.
I mean, I don't know if I'm gonna like it.
I, I- And it has nothing
to do with you All good.
All good.
It's just, uh, you know, I don't,
I don't like tomatoes or anything
that, I don't, I don't … And,
uh, I don't like cooked mushrooms.
I like- He likes raw m- I like raw
mushrooms … He, the only, he likes raw
mushrooms more than cooked mushrooms.
And I like, I like ketchup,
but I don't like- Okay.
Well, we could've put
ketchup on there for you.
And he likes salsa as long as you've
ground up the tomatoes so that
he can't tell they're tomatoes.
But you might like it.
It's not bad.
Okay.
Yeah.
I think it's great.
The t- the tortilla is really good.
I think it's excellent.
See, you- I could actually
believe that it's a fish taco.
Yeah.
Yeah.
'Cause the consistency is close,
and those mushrooms wanna give you
a little bit of that fishy fish.
Mm-hmm.
Mm-hmm.
So Jess, we have learned a lot
today just observing you, having you
teach us a few lessons about this.
And you know what?
I don't know if you saw it, but
we foraged something earlier.
We, we saw something that could be
foraged, but we decided not to forage
it because we thought we would let
you forage it as a gift to yourself.
Okay.
So go see if you can find it.
It's in that area.
Over there.
I feel like it's Easter morning.
That's right.
Okay, Jess, come out.
See if you can find it.
I think I found it.
You found it.
You're such a good forager.
Well, but now you gotta forage it.
Yes.
Forage it.
Forage it.
Ah.
You know, normally we would just walk
past something like this and not notice
it, but thanks to the training that you
gave us, we were able to see it, and
we just wanted you to find it as well.
Well, thank you.
Thank you for teaching us so much and
for putting up with us, especially me.
I, I understand.
Don't eat the blue ones, though.
No?
Thanks for commenting and sharing this video.
You know what time it is.
Hi, my name's Emily from Berea, Kentucky.
I'm in the Daniel Boone National Forest.
I just found this morel mushroom, and now
it's time to spin the Wheel of Mythicality.
But how do you know it's
a real edible mushroom?
I'm nervous now.
What?
It was the wind.
