We're trying the new Frosty
and Fries from Wendy's
Welcome to Good Mythical More.
We've got food we are gonna try.
It's from Wendy's, and
we're not gonna die.
Nope.
If we did, that would reflect poorly on
Wendy's- Yeah … which is not a sponsor.
We're just curious about what this is.
I also have a story that I wanna
tell you- Oh, okay … that,
um- Is it an embarrassing one?
Yeah.
Good.
It's embarrassing to me, maybe
a little bit to my son Lando.
Good.
Um, Lando got kicked out of his first bar.
Good.
He is 16 years old.
Yep.
It was my fault.
And it was your fault It was my fault.
Well, I can't wait to hear that.
But first, let's taste these fries.
These are the new pub fries.
They got some pub items.
There's, like, a pub burger.
Uh, these are the pub fries.
Okay.
Our natural cut.
This is, this is Wendy talking.
Our natural cut, skin-on, sea-salted
fries topped with warm beer
cheese sauce, shredded cheddar,
and crisp applewood-smoked bacon.
Is it weird that the best
pub fries aren't from a pub?
We don't think so.
Hey, listen, don't get
ahead of yourself, Wendy.
Of course, we picked these
up and brought them here.
Not us personally, but us collectively.
So the beer sauce has kinda gotten
to the … The beer cheese sauce
has kinda gotten to the bottom.
I recommend- And we do, we have
a good, like- Turning it over to
get- We have a good system here
with, um, heat lamps and whatnot.
But fries, they are real tough.
They- Those look a little travel weary.
Yeah.
Is there white stuff on it too, or
is that just inside of the- That's-
That's the beer cheese sauce.
That is the beer cheese
that I've gotten to.
Um, it's good.
I mean, two types of cheeses,
a melty one and a saucy one.
I could imagine that
that would be excellent.
Their fries are good fries
Um, I mean, it's basically
cheese, bacon and cheese fries
with a little extra sauce on it.
A loaded fry.
What's not to like about that?
But this Frost- Do you think they
sell more of them- Mm-hmm … calling
it Pub Fries or if they would've
just called them Loaded Fries?
Bacon cheese loaded fries, I think you'd
probably be like, "Yeah, I want that."
Pub Fry, I don't even know what that is.
So this is a man that
doesn't know what a pub is?
Is that the role play?
I, when I hear the words Pub
Fry, I don't picture anything.
Do you?
Uh, I just picture f- fries at a pub.
Exactly.
Um, and I guess they make fries pretty
interesting at, like, a traditional pub,
but I don't disagree with you, but if they
said it was loaded fries, they couldn't,
it couldn't be in the pub family.
Oh.
There's a family of people at Wendy's who
came up with the pub thing and they're
like, "Let's add pub fries," you know?
Of course they had to do it.
It might seem obvious,
but they had to do it.
Aren't these loaded fries?
Yeah, but they're Pub Fries now.
Next week- They're good … they'll
be back and they'll be pu-
they'll be loaded fries.
How could they not be good?
This Frosty, though, which I've never,
I mean, I haven't looked closely
at a Frosty, uh, cup in a while.
It spells Frosty and Wendy's head is
the O. Well, you know, in a classic
Wendy's world, it's a yellow paper cup.
We're not in their classic world anymore.
Nope.
They've g- What happened?
They've g- they've gone from
yellow to this palatable blue.
I thought they had a red spoon with a
wa- with a yellow cup in the old days.
I, I thought it was a,
like, a khaki spoon.
And they also had- And then
it had a square on the bottom
and it said Wendy's on it.
Like, the spoon got
bigger and said Wendy's.
This may be true.
I'm looking it up.
'Cause sometimes you could,
you could use the other end as
kinda like a spatula almost.
Wow.
It's red.
Everything we're seeing
on the internet is red.
Red, not yellow?
Where am I getting yellow from?
So it's a red cup.
All right.
And also, they used to have, uh,
uh, stanchions when you walked
in that, that like, like a bank.
Wendy's had that.
The same thing that Bojangles still has.
Like a little maze.
A little maze.
Oh.
You get to do a maze before you
get, uh, up there and order.
Okay, let's l- l- let's look at the
description of this, uh, of this
Frosty that we're about to eat.
It's the vanilla base.
Uh, it's called the Apple
Crumble Frosty Fusion.
So you got that classic legendary
vanilla Frosty swirled with spiced
apple syrup and mixed with oat crumble.
For a satisfying crunch, they say
Hmm
Very apple-y.
Pretty crunchy.
There it is.
I see the Wendy's cup now.
Yep, it's yellow.
It was yellow.
Alright.
You just had to go back in time so far?
I, I'm trying to get down
to the, um- To the apple-y?
All, all of that apple-y
stuff at the very bottom.
I'm gonna have to take
the top off my Frostie.
Sorry
if that offends you.
Oh.
Even the vanilla Frostie is something that
you can't constantly count on at Wendy's.
Why?
Why?
It's the chocolate that's always there.
The vanilla Frostie is
something that comes and goes.
Are you sure?
That doesn't sound true to me.
I see it on the menu right now.
That sounds like propaganda.
Well, I just saw an ad.
It said, "The vanilla Frostie is back,"
which implied to me that it went away.
And I'm like, yeah, it ain't always there.
Well- The Frostie used
to be just chocolate.
That's 100% true.
Back in the yellow cup days.
But now is it a staple?
Well, if it's back, we don't know.
It doesn't sound like it.
The McRib is back sometimes,
and it's not a staple.
Exactly.
I don't hate this at all, but I don't
really want fruit in my ice cream.
Is it like apple pie, though?
Like, is that the direction
that it's headed toward?
It is, yeah, but without apples,
and that's why I still like it.
It's just an apple syrup, and there's no
chunks of, of actual- No chunks of apple
redemptive fruit.
If somebody made this for me or got
this for me, just like y'all just did.
Mm-hmm.
Right.
I'd be like, "Oh, this is nice."
Never in a million years…
Well, maybe in a million years.
If I was just stuck at a Wendy's
for a million years, I'd have
been, end up trying it, but- You
don't think you'd ever order that?
No.
If I'm gonna order a Frostie, it's just
gonna be the regular Frostie, and maybe
if they've added some extra chocolate
or whipped cream or something, I'll
do that, but I'm not gonna go apple.
I don't g- I don't go a- I
don't make a apple choice.
Yeah.
I don't even really make a
apple choice with apples.
But we do have apples at our house
from some, from time to time.
Shepherd likes them.
So even when you eat apples- And
I will bite, I will bite an apple.
I'll bite one.
And then put it back down?
Yeah.
No.
I, I will, I will eat an apple, and I eat
it because I'm like, "I think I'm supposed
to do this." You know what I'm saying?
That's how I feel as I'm eating an apple.
It's like, "I think I'm supposed
to do this." And it's not bad,
and if you're a little bit
thirsty, sometimes fruit's good.
You know how like, you're like, "I
wanna drink something, but I don't
really wanna drink something, so
I'll eat something that makes me
feel like I'm drinking something"?
That's fruit.
I'm curious- Fruit is, is an edible drink
… because we, or I take french fries and dip
it into my chocolate Frosty at Wendy's.
I wonder if these french fries would
be good with this apple crumble.
Well, there's only one
way to find out, Mikayla.
Dip it right in there.
I don't- The fries are a little limp.
It's too thick.
The fries are limp and the,
the Frosty is too taut.
I've never really liked that combination.
Really?
I don't know about potatoes and ice cream.
Well, I didn't think of it that way.
I thought of it as, like, sweet and salty,
so it was just, like, a cool contrast.
The potato of it.
And a lot of people do.
A really crispy fry, a really
crispy fry, yeah, I can get that.
Not for me either.
You know how much water is in fruit?
Let me tell you a, a quick little
story before we get to Link's
story about, uh, embarrassing
his son and shaming his family.
Um- Shaming my family.
Jessie and I were … I told, I think
I told y'all recently that when we
were in North Carolina I got some
watermelon from that grocery store, and
the Watermelon Queen was- Was singing.
No.
A guy was singing about watermelon.
Yes.
And then the Watermelon Queen was
encouraging people to eat watermelon,
and I had already gone to the grocery
store to get mostly watermelon.
That was a thing that happened in my life.
That day.
And then, uh, we were
supposed to have my mom over.
She wasn't feeling well that day, s-
we ended up, Jessie was gonna make that
watermelon salad that's like watermelon
and feta and, like, it's like a, it's
just a, you know, it's like cut up
watermelon and feta and maybe something
else, and it's very refreshing and
good, a good summer treat, you know?
'Cause this is when we were in
North Carolina for the summer.
Oh, you get halfway down in
this and there, there's a whole
other layer of le crumble.
Le crumble?
Yeah.
Whole other layer of crumble.
Did you … Is it a le crumble?
Is it French?
Le crumble.
Um, I took this watermelon and I
put it on the counter, and I thought
to myself, "I'll get to that."
72 hours later,
I am looking at… I see a Barbara
over on, in the corner of the
kitchen and she's licking something.
And I, and I'm like, "I don't know
what she's licking up. I, I'll go
investigate later." And then I forgot.
The next morning, I wake up
and I go to the rug that's
right next to our dishwasher.
You know the one that you ruined?
Yeah.
You can tell that story too.
It's not much of a story.
It's just we were staying there one
time and Link put, uh, dish soap into
the washing, the dishwasher, and you
can't do that because what happens
is it makes suds that go completely
out of the dishwasher and go onto the
ground, and it's, it takes like seven to
eight cycles of running the dishwasher
to get it completely washed out.
Um, and it made the c- the, it
made the red in our carpet sort
of like bleed a little bit.
Oh, anyway, it's fine.
We're, we don't think about
it every time we go there.
But it's wet down there.
I'm like, "Whoa, why is it so wet?"
The watermelon was completely intact
and had completely given out and leaked
all of its water onto the counter.
Two dish towels had completely
taken all the water, completely
soaked, and then they had overflowed
and had gone onto the ground,
covered the ground and wet the rug.
There's so much water in a watermelon.
And that water stunk like
you would not believe.
Oh, really?
Stinky, rotten watermelon juice.
I don't think I'm ever
gonna eat watermelon again.
So you got a watermelon that
just got rotten within 72 hours?
I think it was already bad, and I think
the Watermelon Queen probably would've
spotted it if I'd have showed it to her.
Hmm.
I had… I'll make this quick.
I had, 'cause I, we have a
story about Link's child- Guys,
I have a good story to tell
embarrassing himself and,
and shaming the family.
The, I bought one of those… Have
you seen these black watermelons?
No.
They have them at, like, Sprouts, and
I've seen them, I think, at Ralphs, too.
They're black, I think
it's kind of a gimmick.
I don't know.
But I bought one, and the next
morning I woke up and there was
watermelon juice all on the ground,
and it had just started leaking out.
And I'm like, "Oh, God. I gotta
clean this up." So I go to
at least open the watermelon.
I take a knife.
As soon as the sharp knife punctures
the watermelon, it explodes all over me.
Oh, God.
Like it was carbonated.
It had just gone bad or something.
Oh, yeah.
It was, like, fermented.
You can't trust a watermelon,
and I wouldn't buy a black one.
That's weird.
Why?
Uh.
I'm gonna stay out of this
I'm staying right out of it.
So anyway, uh, Lando and I
love to go record shopping.
We're vinyl heads.
I'm like, "Dude, there's this record shop
we haven't been to." I was reminded about
it because I follow them on Instagram.
Uh, Permanent Records is one of the
preeminent record shops here in LA.
It's, it's, um, a lot of good finds.
I'd been there before and I remember
that there was, like, something going on
in this, in the front, but then if you
walk down beside and you go, they have,
like, a sh- a record shop in the back.
And I'm like, it's 11:00
AM on a Saturday morning.
We go over there and we park and it,
it's, boy, it's hot as all get out.
And we're walking up and it's a,
the front part is a venue, like
a music venue, um, and a bar
But we didn't walk into that.
Mm. We walked around it, 'cause I
know if you walk around it, you can
go to the, to the record sales place.
Which is a different room.
The record store.
Totally different building in the back.
Different building?
Yeah, it's like an, it's like a,
it's like a, a sh- a shed almost.
An annex.
Like a big, and a big
shed type of an annex.
And, um, before I can even round
the corner and start to go down
the hill, I see a little sign.
Mm. And- It's always a little sign … for
the record, I didn't read the sign.
But when I read the sign it said
You have to be 21 or over To
be anywhere You have to go…
No one admitted unless 21 or over.
I'm like, "Mm." Walk past the sign.
I didn't read it.
I'm sorry, but I have to wink.
Okay.
I didn't read it This,
this your new thing?
And then Lando's behind me.
I didn't say anything
to Lando about the sign.
Turns out Lando was also reading the sign.
We walk a little bit further,
now we're in the patio area.
Too late.
It's t- it's 11:00 AM on a Saturday, ain't
nobody, ain't nobody anywhere in there.
Right
Another sign Oh, bigger?
A little bit bigger?
Same, same sign.
Okay Said the same thing.
I didn't read it.
So they feel strongly about this.
Go a little bit further,
'cause I kept going.
I mean, I was there to buy records
Seems a third sign.
Okay.
These, these signs are everywhere.
Can you tell me what you
think in situations like this?
I just wanna get inside your head.
Not a lot.
Okay.
At this point, I'm just thinking, I'm,
every time I step forward, yes, there's
another sign, but I'm also getting
closer to the door to the record store.
But you're not- And, and no one's
there But you're- Nobody … but,
but you're not thinking like, okay,
just as, by, by way of example.
No, I'm not.
If I was with Shepherd, I would
just be like, "I have Shepherd.
He's not 21, but it's probably fine.
I'm beginning to formulate what I'm
going to say to the person who's
gonna come up to me if that happens."
Like, that's how my brain works.
So what, what are you
thinking at that point?
I just didn't, I was like,
"We're not going in the venue.
We're not going, we're not, you
know, we're not going to a bar.
We're going to a record store.
He wants to go just as much as
I do, so we just keep going." So
just you wanted to go that day.
That was it.
That was my… Yeah.
Okay.
I really wanna go.
Okay.
Got it.
And I really want him to see, I
really want him to come with me.
Right.
He's never seen- And it doesn't-
He's never seen a record
store … and it doesn't make sense.
Like, okay, yes, I'm
walking past these signs.
The venue's on the right and the
signs are on the left, and I am
walking in between them, but…
So I go in the door to the record store.
Whoa, there we are.
Records.
I, and I- More signs?
And then I start to look, I start
to figure out where I'm gonna look.
I'm looking at the wall, just
this is gonna be amazing.
And then, uh, no worker there.
Then all of a sudden out
of nowhere, she's there.
Mm. I mean, she's right there.
Just like super nice, super apologetic
tone, "I'm so sorry, but this is 21
or over 'cause we serve drinks here."
And I'm like, "Oh, this too?" Okay.
That was pretty good.
Oh, this too?
That sounded premeditated.
Uh, I just don't know what
it feels to premeditate.
Maybe I did that.
Okay.
All right.
You don't know what it
feels like to premeditate.
I'm not… I mean, I just, I just
played a little, I just play…
To me, I was just playing dumb.
This too?
I mean, it's a reasonable question.
Oh, this, this too.
Yeah, you're not serving drinks here.
This is records.
And then, so then she turns around
and was like, "I'm gonna have
to ask you to leave." And so-
Didn't even ask him for his ID?
He starts to- Maybe he's Benjamin Button.
He starts to… So then he's like,
"Okay," and he, he's like, he said
something and he's like, "All right.
I, I, I'll get out of here."
And as he's leaving, he's like-
"Dad, I want that record."
And he saw one that he wanted.
Immi- She's great … Imogen Heap.
Great.
Oh, she's great.
Imogen Heap.
Great record.
And then I'm like, um, so I turn
around and I'm like, "Lando…"
I'm at the doorway and he's on the
outside, and he has to, she's like,
"You have to leave right now." Yeah.
It's almost like we are going to be
busted by authorities, I think is what is
actually the deal, if they find somebody
underage is just, like, gallivanting
around their record store/bar or whatever.
So I stand at the doorway and I'm like,
"Lando, so go b- just go back to the
car and just, uh, crank it up 'cause
it's so hot, and I'll, I'll, I'll be
there, I'll be there soon." And it felt
like all of a sudden it became this
like there was a, a burning building
or something, like it was an emergency.
And I was like, "You, you, Nano,
you, you go back to the car and
just crank it up and you, you can
stay cool, and I, I will find you."
Uh.
Yeah.
"But I'm not coming with you right now-
Right … because I'm record shopping."
And then I turned around, and I mean,
and I just started record shopping.
And, uh, he went back to the car.
And then it occurred to me, you
know, I could've, we could've just
both left, but he wanted the record.
Why do that?
Right.
So then I went back in, and I just
looked at the, I looked at the records.
The only record I found was
the one he wanted, which was
really hard to find, actually.
I, but I don't feel like, unless something
else happened, I don't feel like- Nothing
else happened … you shamed your family.
I didn't shame my family.
I thought that- I mean, he
got kicked out of a bar.
Well, I thought that what you were gonna
say was you pushed back, 'cause that was
what I was expecting the story to be.
No, I would've, I, I- Like, really?
I mean, come on.
I mean, that's what I thought.
I was like, "Can't you, can't you just
have us go in here and…" I think
they want to sell, they wanna serve
alcohol- They want you to get a little
drunk before you start purchasing items
while you're going through the records.
I just think that the, the, the,
the thing that I didn't realize
was how much I was playing it like
it was an evacuation situation.
"You gotta get outta here." "But I
gotta stay." I coulda just gone out
there with him, walked out and said,
"Hey, let's develop a plan." Right.
"I'ma go back in there.
I'ma get that record for you.
I'ma shop for 10 minutes or so.
I won't take too long, and then
I'll come back out and get you." But
instead, I acted like it was a, a
life or death split second decision
to, like, s- uh, get him to evacuate.
You panicked a little.
I panicked for no reason.
You didn't premeditate, but you panicked.
I panicked.
Last q- I, I, I- I panicked … have a
question about the process because as
you know, I've got your location tracked,
um, so I can know w- why you're not at
places when I'm expecting you to be there.
Um, and I, uh, well, you know, I
check in on my family, and so I, the
th- the f- people that I have tracked
are Jessie, Locke, Shepherd, and you.
Okay.
And so when I'm like, where, usually
it's, "Where's Shepherd?" You know,
it's 1:00 AM, where is Shepherd?
And so, but usu- sometimes on the weekend,
it'll be like, "Oh, where's Shepherd? He's
supposed to be here. We're gonna go…"
And then I look, and a lot of times you
are somewhere like, oh, Link's downtown.
Like, let me zoom in and see.
Oh, he's at a record shop.
You're at a record shop a lot.
And so I ha- so it hit me, the last time
I saw you on the map at a record shop, I
was like, I need to ask him this question.
So-
21-year-old Are you always finding
something … Do you always go with like,
"This weekend, I have this record that
I'm look, that I, that I'm looking for"?
And are, and is it that the shops are
always getting new stuff in, so you
always just go to the same shops and
look at the new stuff they have in?
Yeah.
That's why, that's what sends you back-
Yeah … week after week, new records.
Yeah.
And there's a lot to go to, and
I'm not looking for … I'm adding
to the list of things that I wanna
find, but I'm, uh, I always have a
long list of things I'm looking for.
But the record shops have developed
a system for people like you to get
you to keep coming back, which is
constantly overturning inventory.
The new arrivals is like- That's
what it's about … I don't
have to pick through everything.
I just pick through the new arrivals.
Yeah.
Then I go somewhere else.
I'm just fiending for a fix, man.
And do you always come
back home with a record?
Drunk?
Yeah.
No.
Um, usually, yeah.
Yeah.
Do you have an upper limit
that you will not go over?
Dollars-wise?
Or number of records.
Or dollars, yes.
I'll usually run out of energy.
Oh, that's what does it.
Yep.
It's just energy.
That happens to me after the f-
halfway through the first store.
