GMW 43: Teaching A 5 Year Old To Make Sushi

Good Mythical Weekend. Can we teach actual five-year-olds how to do things they should never do? This is, Explain Like They’re Five. Hello everyone. First up, let’s meet our five-year-old. Hi Liam. Hi. How are ya? Good. Do you wanna wave to the audience? Nice. Alright, and let’s meet my best friend, comedian, writer, and all around cutie, Rekha Shankar! Rekha, you wanna wave to the audience? Hi. Okay, so this game is simple. We’ve met Liam and now we’re gonna find out what our adult activity is. We’ll try to explain it as well as possible so Liam can fully do it by himself on his own when the time is up. Does that make sense? Makes sense to me. Okay, Liam, before we begin, I have a serious question. What is your favorite animal? Tiger. Tiger. Any other tiger fans in the house? Okay. Alright. Okay, good choice, Liam. I think that was a really good choice. Okay guys, you can go ahead and remove the black sheet to see what you’re teaching Liam. Okay. Liam, do you know what we’re doing? Sushi. Sushi. Okay, so Rekha and I are gonna explain to you how to make sushi and then you’re gonna try to make it. Does that sound good? Have you ever had sushi? Okay. I guess the answer is probably no. But have you ever happened to make sushi? Okay. No, he’s had a long, long storied history of making it but not, won’t try it. Won’t try it. I wanted to check, I dunno, his backstory. So you’re familiar with the shape of sushi, right? Because right now this doesn’t even look like sushi. Sushi comes in like a little circular, almost like it’s like little hockey puck. It’s like a hockey puck, right? Have you played hockey? Nice. Imagine if the hockey puck was a big tube and you cut the tube into slices. And that’s what the puck was. You’ve seen a tube, right? Oh no. Um, oh my God. Okay. Okay. Someone show him a tube. Okay. Um, oh, this is kind of a tube. This is also kinda like a tube. Sure. Both of these are kind of tube shaped. Does that make sense? Yeah. Yeah. Incredible. Okay. I know we’re being kind of confusing, so I appreciate you following along. Okay. Um, okay, so we’re gonna take one of these first. This is called Nori. It’s seaweed. It’s from the ocean. Do you wanna taste it? No thank you. And honestly, boundaries very respectful. Respect your own boundaries. That’s beautiful, respectful, beautiful, and respectful to me, and I love that. That’s really good. Okay. Okay. We’re gonna set this down on this cool thing. You wanna give this a wiggle? It’s kind of fun, right? Yeah. It’s like a bendy piece of paper, right? Nice. Okay. Pretty cool. Okay, now we put this down. Yeah. We put the sushi that you or no. The, nori, nori. This Nori goes on the rolling mat. I’m panicking already. Yeah. You put the seaweed that you didn’t wanna try. Yeah. On the bendy paper that you loved and you loved that. Feel this, you feel the ridge part that should be, that’s gonna be facing you. Facing you. Do it again. Facing you. One more time. Facing you. But that’s confusing because this is facing him now. Him. Oh no. So smooth, smooth, down, rough up. Does that make sense? Yeah. Do you wanna say it back to us? Nothing. Yeah. And that honestly, and I wouldn’t either. I think that’s and that good. I don’t remember it, honestly. Okay. So you know what this is, right? Rice? Yes. Yes. Do you like rice? Do you wanna try some? Do you want a tiny handful of rice? No, thank you. Okay. Okay. Honestly, and that makes sense. True to himself. Be true to yourself. Okay. I love that. Now the amount does it Yeah, the whole thing. Yeah. But then it has to be a thin layer for you to roll it. I don’t think it has to be perfect. This isn’t going out at a restaurant. You are a perfectionist, and I think Liam and I maybe aren’t. Are you a perfectionist? Yeah. And honestly, you’d better not be neither. I, I think its better for your mental health. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. So you see what Rekha doing? She’s like pressing the rice down on the paper. Do you wanna try it? No. Thank you. Okay. So there is one day Jordan and I won’t be here, and this will be kind of your job. So I hope it looks fun. It is kind of fun. One fun thing that you can do. Is that if your fingers get too sticky from the rice, you can dip ’em in the water and now they’re literally so clean. What do you think about that? So this is the nori with the rice now, the next step is kind of the most fun. It’s all the cool stuff that goes inside the sushi. Yeah. So Jordan, do you wanna take this one hour? I would love to do this. Okay. Cucumber, are you a fan? No. Okay. I think because it’s here, I have to put it in and I’m sorry. Um, I wouldn’t do you like that normally, but ultimately this is my job, and one day you will understand health insurance. Okay? Um, avocado, are you a fan? Do you like guacamole? Do you like guacamole? Do you like sauce? Do you like ketchup? Do you like chicken nuggets? This is like that? Yeah. Okay. Um, so put that there. And then this is crab, but do you wanna know something so wild about this? It’s not actually crab. Do you know what it’s made of? Fish. I don’t think that’s as revelatory of a thing as you think it is. It’s not this type of ocean thing, it’s another type of ocean thing. Do you think that’s cool? Yeah, I don’t either. Okay. Okay. Excuse me. You’re at my job right now. Relax. Um, alright. And I’m just gonna put this on here. Maybe like, what do you think about that? It’s kind of interesting, right? Do you like what I’ve done? Yeah. Okay. Thank you. That’s very kind of you. We should turn this. We, we did, we actually did a bad job. You’re being generous, but we did a bad job. Okay. So you see how these things on the mat go this way? Yeah. All the toppings should also go that way. You see what I mean? How like this goes, this line goes this way, and the topping go this way. Okay? If you try to go like this, it kind of doesn’t work, right? You see how everything gets bunchy and you don’t wanna eat that, right? But if it goes like this, then when you go like this, it looks awesome. It looks good, right? It’s not bunching up. Okay, so now what we’re gonna do is we’re gonna take this, and this is the really fun part. This is almost like if Legos were food, do you like Legos? Yeah. Nice. This is like if Minecraft was sushi. Okay. So now what we’re gonna do, it’s gonna be facing you like this, and then we’re gonna roll it up. Yeah. So we do a little roll like that. And listen. Hey, something important to know coming from one adult to you is that things don’t need to be perfect. Right. Right. It’s kind of cool if you do things different in your own way. Jordan, I don’t want to call into question your strategy this late in the game. Are you even on camera right now? There’s one. I thought you guys were off camera waiting for the next round. They need something to cut to. That feels unfair. Been silently observing. Uhhuh. Can I help you Trevor? The rice. You’ve chosen to do it inside of the seaweed? Yes. That’s one variation of sushi. Okay. It’s true. I was just, I know it’s true. I was just curious. I just wanted to make sure that was– Rekha and I have both been to Japan. I’m not, I was just, I was just making sure. Are you questioning if we both been to Japan? No. Good, good. Because I told you to never question that. Yeah. Y’all could have gone. Okay. You see, and then you give it a little squeeze. So now it’s like this. Oh, that’s cool. It’s like one big tube. Remember when we were talking about tubes? That’s a tube. So if we want to turn this tube into hockey pucks, we have to cut it. So that means you get to use a knife, which is awesome. Yes, it’s awesome. So which knife do you like better? Dealer’s choice. Green or yellow? Green. I like green. Yeah. Okay. So now I’ll show you how to do this part and then you get to do it. You can just cut into it, but one thing that helps is to hold it while you cut. Cut, cut, cut, cut, cut, cut. And I would say instead of going straight down what people didn’t like, cut, cut, cut, cut, cut. No, I think maybe the objection is cutting it like it’s a loaf of bread, but it’s sushi and so it should be straight. Okay. Do you wanna do it? Oh my God, there is, there’s a bunch of rice residue on my pants. Why? Get over here. Oh look. And then I got to the bottom and I had to saw it. Okay. Do you see what the inside looks like? It looks like a cinnamon roll. That is a better metaphor. Okay. Excuse me. Okay. But that’s just, that’s just south outside. That’s just literally the outside. Jordan, do you wanna retake the intro where you introduced Rekha as your best friend? Yeah. Okay. This looks awesome. I Two words to use. This looks good. This looks, and this is looking good. So Rekha is kind of giving you an example of what not to do. No. You know, this might be weak nori. Does this look like sushi you’ve seen before? No. Okay. What is, what about that? Does that look more like what you’ve seen before? Okay. You cut a slice. Have you seen sushi? Oh, okay. Alright. Okay. So this is actually what’s crazy is this is the best sushi that’s ever been made. Yeah. Okay. I, I think that Jordan and Rekha, you’ve done a, you’ve done a great job. Thank you. That looks beautiful. Liam. Do you think that, that you can make a sushi roll now? Yes. Yes. Okay. So we can excuse, uh, the two of you. Uh, you’ve done, you’ve done wonderfully. I, you cannot guide Liam anymore through this. Okay. Chase is going to. Uh, replenish the ingredients and, and, you know, sit with Liam for safety reasons. Okay, Liam, can I get a high five? Uh, but other than that. You’re gonna do awesome. You guys can no longer guide and we need to see, and we don’t need to. If Liam has all the lessons in order to make his own sushi roll. Alright, remember what was the first thing to do? Mm-hmm. And then remember. This. Okay, go ahead. You’re absolutely crushing it. That too sticky. Alright. You know what to do if it’s sticky. Yes. Now what? Do you remember what comes next? I will say the ease and calmness with which you’re making this, Liam, is how sushi’s supposed to be made. Yeah. That’s awesome. That’s so good. That’s so good. That’s so good. Yes. Yes. Yes. Vegetarian. It’s vegetarian. That’s awesome. Keep it vegetarian. Yes. Chicken nuggets. That’s awesome. Anything else? What do you think happens next? If you wanna do that. Yeah, go ahead. Put that down. Don’t call it a fish pencil. It’s a fish pencil. Load it up. Then what do you think you should do? Roll it. Okay, let’s try rolling it. I knew I did do a bad job with that. See, you never know how you’re gonna affect a kid’s life. Wait, wait, wait. Remember what theirs looks like. You can use that to help. You don’t have to use that as an example. Huh? This is good. Now roll it again. Yes. Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. Oh! See that’s how More Emoto does it. Yeah. When that roller’s not working, use your hand. Yeah, that’s a hand roll. That’s maki. Use the yellow one. Okay. All right. I’m gonna help you, push down and go back and forth. It is almost like you have to go back and forth with it. And then there you go. I feel like if anything gets messed up, it’s kind of on Chase at this point, right? I think so, because we can only do so much, but when he goes to college, you know. It’s like Liam’s kind of trying to do it and Chase keeps being like, I’ll help. It’s like, yeah, and we’re like, you’re a pushing relaxer. Relax. Yeah. We already gave him the tools. You done? Yeah, you done? Yeah. Okay. I’d say that Liam did a great job and perhaps because of his great teachers, which means we’re gonna call that one a success. All right, and now we have to welcome Emerly. Yeah, yeah. We’re so happy to have you. Emerly, what is your favorite color? Purple. Ah, that’s awesome. That’s good one. Purple’s the best. I love that. No better answer. Okay, Rachel and Trevor, you’re gonna lift up that sheet to see what you are teaching. Emerly, please. Oh boy. Oh boy. Oh, oh, no, no. You’ll be teaching Emerly how to parallel park. Parallel Parallel Park. She’s absolutely gagged. Oh, that car is awesome. Oh my God. People are gonna be asking you to help them move with that car. Emerly, do you like cars? Yeah. Do you think driving will be cool someday? Oh my God, yeah. Whoa. Well, today we’re gonna teach you a little bit of driving, a big part of driving, which is parallel parking. This thing is awesome. It’s not for you. Well, it is for me. Um, Emerly, would you like to take a seat inside of our vehicle? Okay. While we teach you. Do you need any help getting in? Madam. Yeah. No, it’s got a Yeah, and it’s gonna need somewhere. Yeah. And you’re just gonna, okay, so this, no, it’s easy. It’s easy. And you’re just gonna kind of, I don’t wanna, okay. Part, part of driving is knowing how to open doors. Here’s the thing. First off, if we get, you are gonna get into the car, maybe it’s the other side. Do you think it’s got a lock on it? That would be wild. There’s no button on this that says open door. Emerly. D you need a code? Do you know how to get in? No. Okay. You don’t have to. Oh, I found it. I found it. Oh, what is it? It’s a little, little latch there. Oh, it’s got a latch. Thank you. Yeah, all there it is. Emerly, we’ve taught you how to open the car door. Do you think you can do it? You’re in the car now. Okay. Safe driving. First things first. Gotta shut the door. Really good. Yes. Yeah. Oh, snapped. Already. Already nailing it in terms of parallel parking. Okay. Emily, I’m gonna do a little forward and backward here just to get you accustomed to being in the vehicle. You’re doing great. Okay. Okay. That’s good. This is good. Hey, there it is. Backing up. Okay. I like the look on your face. You look like you’re ready for adventure, Uhhuh. This is crazy. Okay. I am going to turn the– You wanna honk the horn? I don’t know if it has one. Let’s see. Oh yeah. Okay, guys. Beep, beep. It’s all right. I can do the sound for you. Do it. Wow. Get outta my way. That’s you. We got the horn. That sounds like a goose. Yeah, it’s awesome. Okay. Okay, so the first step here to parallel parking. Um, oh, there it is, you found it. Perfect. I love that. You’re gonna need that for when people are like, you’re taking too long and you’re gonna be like, mm-hmm. I need to take my time. I’m driving safely. Yeah. Mm-hmm. So this is where we, we wanna end up, this is our parking spot here, and this is a car and that’s a car. And we wanna get into here without hitting. The cars, which is gonna be a task. So first off, when you parallel park, you want to drive up sort of next to the car in front. Uhhuh, why is everyone laughing? This is good stuff. This is good. Yep. Okay. You kind of getting it, this is the first part. First part is moving forward. Yeah. You know, so what’s your with anything in life. Yeah. Once you’re up next to this car. Mm-hmm. Now we’re gonna turn you and back you into this spot. Back into the right. So we’re turning the wheel to the right. So you wanna back up and then we’re gonna straighten out here. So my question is, is she gonna have to do it with that remote? No, no, there’s There’s stuff in there. Yeah. There are other controls here. You have controls in the car. Okay. So this, I think there, this is the forward, oh, maybe that’s the radio. That’s a radio. Oh my God. Yeah, it’s the all car station. That’s awesome. Hey, this is so much fun. Sorry, I’m trying, I’m supposed to be, we gotta keep teaching. I’m sorry. We’re going back in reverse here. Mm-hmm. And then. So we went forward, we went back and. Yeah. And we’re gonna keep– She’s trying to override you. Yeah. Sydnee. He’s in control of it right now, but soon you’ll be taking over. Okay. I feel pretty good about this thus far. Okay. Okay. Emerly, how do you, uh, feel about this? Do you, you know how to parallel park now? You feel confident? You should feel confident you, you looked good in there. Yeah. That’s a high five or a handshake? Both. Yeah. Yeah. So sort of you want to back in kind of at an angle and then get in and then pull it forward to straighten it out? Mm-hmm. You feel good? I feel good. You feel good? Okay. Awesome. Yeah! Most of learning is just confidence. Yeah. And we need confident drivers in LA. Mm-hmm. Alright, Emerly, are you ready to parallel park? You got it. You’re gonna do great. Take it away whenever. Whenever you’d like to hit that gas pedal. Good stuff. Nice. Nice. Yes. That was perfect. You came out swinging? Mm-hmm. Okay. And what next? Yeah, please pay attention to reversing. Nice. You got this. You got this? Yeah. Nice, nice. Okay. That’s awesome. Emily is making me feel that driving is me. There we go. There we go. Okay. Wait. There it’s okay. This and then a little forward. That’s okay. Honestly, this is pretty good in most places. Totally fine. That’s alright. I Not a lot. Well, Emerly, can I tell you that you did such a good job. This was so amazing. You did incredible. Everyone’s really proud of you. You drove today. I, I mean, I didn’t drive when I was your age, although a couple times my grandma let me do the wheel while she did the pedals. Well, that’s just Texas. Good job, Emerly. Okay, welcome back Liam, for this final round. We have all four teachers here ’cause we’re gonna teach you something really important. Jordan, if you wouldn’t mind taking that sheet off. Yes, that’s right. You’ll all be teaching Liam how to do CPR. Good. I was trained in this about 10 years ago. And me, maybe even longer than that ago. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Alright, are you ready? Yeah. So first we stumble upon a scene. Oh yeah. Oh my God. The whole way. Okay. Oh no. Oh, no. So Liam, the first thing you have to do is you have to make sure the person is not conscious that they can’t breathe. So how do you see if someone’s awake or not? I don’t know. I would go like, excuse me. Are you okay? Are you, are you okay? Excuse me. Torso. Hi. Yeah, little wakey. Wakey. I do a little of this. Does he seem awake? Maybe a little with the nostrils, the breathing out. See if they’re breathing. Breathing out. Does he seem awake right now? No. What did you name him? Chase. His name is Chase. Chase. Great name, good name. Good name. So Chase is not awake. So then I’m gonna go. Trevor, go get help and Trevor’s gonna go get help. Hello? 9 1 1. We have an unconscious man. Please send help. So the first thing you do is tell someone else to go get help. Make sense? Yes. Nice. Okay. Now the next step. Is compressions? Possibly. I think maybe first you check their airway. Airway. A, B, C. Airways. Breathing. Breathing. Compressions, compressions, airway. I’m learning so much Uhhuh. So it’s possible that they’re not breathing right, because maybe there’s something stuck in there. Like a big piece of pizza. Yeah, they choked on pizza. So you wanna check if there’s something in there? Is there anything in there? Is there, Liam? Do you feel pizza in there? Okay. Rocks. Okay. Why are you calling 9 1 1? Yeah. Did you feel any pizza in there? You did? Oh, we gotta get that outta there. Okay. Okay. Alright, well if that’s the case, then let’s say I and then it flies out and I catch it and I throw it over there. Yeah, but he’s still not breathing. So there’s no more pizza inside him. So what do we do next? So, a airways check, we check the airway. B. Breathing. Right. We, we kind of already said, but is, is there, pick a nostril or you could maybe put an ear to the chest. Right. Or a hand. Or a hand. Yeah. You could put a hand on chest and see if the chest goes up and down. Yeah. Because Right. You know what breathing looks like. So if he’s not doing that. That’s a really good example of breathing. That was good. Okay. Go off. I’m serious. I’ve been doing it forever. Uh, so if he’s not breathing, see? We do compressions. This is the fun part. Mm-hmm. Do you know what compressing is? Yeah. It’s when you take a video file and you wanna make it smaller and so you. It’s kind of like– No laughs from the room for that one. I thought that would get someone in here. Compressing is like. It’s like, yeah. Bouncing with your hands. Pushing. It’s like pushing, yeah. Pushing, pushing, pushing with your hands. Do you play a basketball or some such sport? Oh, it’s like dribbling. Yeah. Dribbling nice. But more and you’re doing both hands. Can you do that, Liam? No. Okay. Is it because it, you guys gonna, is it because it looks silly? Mm-hmm. Yeah. Kinda. Could we have fun? Could we all do it? It’s almost like a dance move. Do the one’s doing it do the CPR. Could you think about maybe doing it? It’s not looking good for Chase? Yeah. Okay. Okay. Well, you’ll have to do it a little later. Yeah. After you check the airways, after you check for breathing, you are gonna go in between these two circles. The sternum. And then you, you dribble like a basketball, but. Yeah, more basketball. Basketball. Basketball. Basketball. Basketball. I love basketball. I love basketball. Basketball. Oh. And then he’s breathing and now, and now he’s like, oh my gosh. Thank you, Liam. You saved my life. Wow. You wanna eat pizza? No. No. Okay. Does that make sense? Oh, okay. Is there anything that you’re like, wait, that part confused me? No. Okay. No. Okay. So first we asked for help. We sent Trevor, Trevor called 9 1 1. Mm-hmm. Then we checked the airways that we got a big piece of pizza out. We checked the breathing, ’cause breathing, and then we played basketball. Mm-hmm. On his chest. Mm-hmm. That’s how hard as it can. Okay. Do you, do you think you got it? You wanna try it? No. Okay. Do you think you could try it though? Just one time? No. I’m gonna be real with you. They told me that I’m gonna lose my job. If you don’t do this, I’m not gonna be able to work here anymore. Would you please try it for me and Chase? ’cause Chase is my friend. Chase. Can you confirm? Yeah. Jordan’s one of my best friends. Pretty cool. So could you try it for me and Chase? I can do it next to you while you do it. Okay, let’s try it. So the first thing, he’s like not breathing right? Well, he’s not breathing. You need help you. So you call for nine one one. Yes. There we go. It’s incredible job. Okay, so can you do that now? Can you say, someone call nine one one. Someone Call 9 1 1. Can you yell it? Can you yell it? No, because we’re in a library. That makes sense. You whisper to the librarian. Call 9 1 1. She goes, okay. And then she goes and calls 9 1 1. Okay. So re remember what he had in his his mouth. Pizza. Pizza. Okay. And what we have to do what with that? Very good. Yes. That’s perfect. I love basketball. Can we do a couple more? I love basketball. I love basketball. Basketball. I love basketball. Okay. And he’s alive. Oh my God. And he says everyone on stage is gonna get 20 cash. Yeah. That’s awesome. Wow. Okay. What’s that? That’s the lung. That’s a human heart. Yeah. Yeah, that’s a human heart. Okay, well thank you Liam, and thanks to Emerly as well for all of your skill demonstrating today. And thank you to Rekha for joining us as well and all of your skill demonstrating today.
