Oh my gosh, I can get on board with that. (skeptical laugh) I wouldn’t quite say it’s the greatest game ever made. (Finebros) What makes it one of the best? I think it’s– I don’t know. The story, the characters. It’s really a good game and it totally redefined gaming in many ways in the PS1. It blew everybody’s minds with the pure rendered backgrounds. The graphics, for the time, were fantastic. The timeline is epic. It is the game that introduced, especially the Americas and American culture, to what a Japanese RPG was like. The PlayStation was a great system and we saw what it could do, but then this was like, “Oh, no. This is what you can do with the PlayStation.” Final Fantasy VII was an experience, not just a video game. (Finebros) This game is an RPG. What does that stand for? Rated PG? A Role Playing Game. Raul Picks Games. It’s a Raul Pick. Role Playing Game. Or in this case, technically a JRPG, which is – (both) a Japanese Role Playing Game. – Correct. (Finebros) And what exactly, if someone doesn’t know, what makes it a role playing game? It’s just basically an adventure game. And you have a big world and you can go anywhere. – It’s not a linear game. – Those are hard. – Yeah. – I don’t play those. It’s usually a turn-based kind of thing. I’ll hit you and then I’ll wait, and then the enemy hits me, and then I’ll wait. You just immerse yourself completely in this character, so everything that goes on in the world around him, you’re pretending you’re this guy. You’re in the game. You are that guy. Typically, what you have is a party of characters. They often tell a much more epic plotline. Which actually gets its roots from Dungeons & Dragons back in the ’70s, and Dungeons & Dragons is a role playing game where you take turns with turn-based strategies. (Finebros) Do you like RPGs? Well, I was addicted to the Sims freshman year, so if that counts as role playing, then yeah. I like linear games because they’re more therapeutic for me. – You’re a Mario Kart guy. – Yeah, it’s like unwinding. – I like the genre. – I like it too. It’s like an adventure. I enjoy that type of game, but I don’t always have the time I want to really get into the storyline. In middle school and high school especially, I loved RPGs. I’ve kind of lost favor with RPGs at this point, just from a sheer time-to-rewards standpoint. (Finebros) And so this trailer now has over 10 million views. Wow. Not enough. (Finebros) And Square Enix’s stock is now at the highest level – it’s been since 2008. – Whoa. – Oh my god. – That’s crazy. (Finebros) Why the hype for a remake of Final Fantasy VII? I mean, nostalgia’s a pretty powerful thing. It’s what keeps Nintendo going. It’s a remake also. For example, Jurassic Park/Jurassic World. Jurassic World– it’s the number one movie in the whole world, so it’s basically the same concept. Well, there’s some gamers that still like playing video games in their 30’s, so they remembered it from their childhood. VII has that core, and I think even new people recognize that respect that comes along with this game. Final Fantasy VII was a game that really defined a lot of our childhoods and our video game lives. I have this theory, actually, that a game– and it legitimately is a game theory– that your favorite Final Fantasy game, and the one you love the most, is the first one you play. This one has a special place in people’s hearts, right? And so everyone was waiting for this one to happen. (Finebros) When remakes happen in film, the reception is usually not like this. So why is it different when you’re remaking a video game compared to remaking a classic movie? That is a good question. I’ve never really thought about it like that. That’s actually a good point. Maybe it’s because everyone’s played Final Fantasy a million times, so they just want to be really immersed in something, but I guess that’s the same with movies. You know what? I can’t really explain this. Has anyone else been able to explain that? This is not so much a remake as it a remastering. Like, remaking a video game is basically a remastering. It’s like taking your old film and restoring it. The technology changing impacts video games a whole lot more – than it does movies. – That’s true. All the old-time actors, they have this legendary feel, but video games, it’s like they’re not real people. They’re just graphics in a story, so if you just make the graphics better and the story more developed, they’re gonna like that more. When you remaster things, it becomes CGI and a lot of that old, original magic of movie-making is perceived as lost. In a video game, it’s all digitally done from the beginning, and so to see the next evolution of that is why people get excited. Trust me, the game is not out yet. I am sure that people will be plenty upset by what this game does and how it turns out. (Finebros) About how long does it take you to beat a Final Fantasy game? Oh, jeez. If you’re me, it takes a really long time. What? 60 to upwards of 100 hours? I mean, they are quite a time investment. I don’t think I’ve spent less than 60 hours – on a Final Fantasy. – That sounds about right. And that’s not including 100% of the game. (Finebros) Finally, are you going to play the Final Fantasy VII remake – when it comes out? – Maybe I’ll get it for my boyfriend? I’ll probably get about halfway through, and then I’ll probably stop. Yes, because I should’ve already and I kind of hate myself for it. Even if I don’t physically have the man hours to play it, I still want to. Like, you get invested in these things. And I don’t have that bone in my body. I could set aside a work week and a week of being a father. Yeah, I’ll play it. Does it have a sad ending though?
