GMM 1719: Ice Cream Taste Test Tournament: Finals

Which ice cream will churn its way to the top? – Let’s talk about that. (warm synth music) Good Mythical Morning! – This is it! – Ooh! – We have made it to the end of the road and we are about to determine the best store bought ice cream that you can buy at a store that is store bought! – Yes. – And it’s ice cream! – Yes. – This is an important decision. – Very important. – It’s an important moment in the internet! – Ice cream fans around the world, steel your spoon selves, hide your kid cones, hide your wife-le balls, the last four ice cream contenders are going head to head for the ultimate cream competition culmination! It’s time for Take It to the Scoop! National Ice Cream Tournament, Frozen Finale! – Are you okay? – Mm, yes, never better. – All right, so we’ve crowned the best from each flavor region, not without controversy. But now all that’s left to do is taste and judge last three match-ups. – But first, let’s take a look at how our regional champion ice creams got here. This is the pursuit for the perfect pint. – [Stevie] The pursuit for pint perfection has been an icy one. 64 ice creams entered, all but four melted away. Let’s meet our four remaining flavors. The first to the Frozen Finale, Haagen-Dazs chocolate peanut butter, had our hosts at hello, there’s peanut butter in me. After Haagen-dancing their way through the first two competitors, they found themselves facing off with Blue Bunny’s super fudge brownie. But Blue Bunny didn’t even know what hit ’em when the Dazs came to dominate. Haagen-Dazs, more like I’ll be Haagen that. You wanted a Cinderella story and the fruit region gave you a Cinderbella story in the form of Blue Bell’s banana pudding. After a first round banana v. banana bloodbath against Ben & Jerry’s Chunky Monkey, the Lone Star long shot persisted all the way to the regional final, pudding itself first, and that’s a fruit truth you can’t dispute. If you hear a bell ring, it’s because Blue Bell cookies ‘n cream has snagged the brand a second spot in the top four after cookies ‘n creaming its competition in the vanilla region. Blue Bell beat Breyers Oreo cookies & cream at its own game, and in the final match-up, Haagen-Dazs Dulce de Leche was dulce de let go and the south maintained its stronghold in vanilla. The final pint to secure a spot in the Frozen Finale, Ben & Jerry’s Half-Baked. The number one seat for miscellaneous beat both Tillamook Birthday Cake and The Tonight Dough. Suck it, Jimmy. (thunk) Half-Baked became fully baked when it eliminated Breyers Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and soared to the Frozen Finale of four. (whistle) – Man, it’s been a wild ride. We’ve laughed, we’ve cried, we’ve had a regular bowel. – (laughs) But now we bravely conclude our creamy journey. It’s the final cream-down. (bells) Our first match-up is the winning ice cream from the chocolate region, Haagen-Dazs chocolate peanut butter, versus the winning ice cream from the fruit region, Blue Bell banana pudding. Let’s start it. You wanna start over here? – Yeah, ’cause I mean, it doesn’t really matter. This, this one we knew we were gonna love. This one was the unexpected sort of eight seed dark horse– – Yeah. – Cinderella situation. – I feel like we’re gonna be friends for life. – It’s still good. – It’s not only good, the more that I’ve reflected up on it in the wee hours of the night as I’ve woken up and thought about her. It’s better than banana pudding. – Her? – She is better even in ice cream form. – Why’s it a woman? – Because when I wake up in the middle of the night, that’s what I like to be dreamin’ about. – Oh God. – [Link] What are you, what are you doing? You diggin’ for a? – [Rhett] I’m nuggetin’– – [Link] You diggin’ for a nugget? – [Rhett] I’m not that, oh gosh, I got that nugget, look at that nugget, right on top! – [Link] I’m just goin’ in blind. – It’s so big. Mm, look at that nugget. – I didn’t actually get any peanut butter. – Look at the size, and I got a way with nuggets, man. I can sniff out a nugget like you never seen. – Should we? Should we continue the upset? – No. – Come on, don’t forget, don’t lose yourself, don’t lose yourself. – No, I’m enjoying this– – Don’t lose yourself, don’t lose yourself. – I’m enjoying this peanut butter so much right now. – I know you are. But this changed my relationship with ice cream. – [Rhett] It’s great, it’s incredible. – But the one thing it didn’t do is it didn’t dethrone my connection. – [Rhett] This is for a good time. – [Link] With the peanut butter and chocolate. – This is like for a good time, highly recommended. This is for like a spiritual experience. – Yeah. – This is another level. There’s something metaphysical happening with this ice cream. – Because of the combination, but also the Haagen-Dazs delivery of it. Blue Bell, I think we’re agreeing– – [Rhett] You fought well, Blue Bell, but now we’re gonna push you to the side. – You gotta go to the bench. – Haagen-Dazs moves on to the finals! (thunk) (clatters) Well, that was a little disrespectful, but whatever. (bells) All right, our next match-up is a battle between vanilla-based and miscellaneous. Which will prevail, Blue Bell cookies ‘n cream or Ben & Jerry’s Half-Baked? – Blue Bell has been a revelation to us in this tournament. – Yeah, I mean, I like everything from Texas now. I’m thinkin’ about goin’ back to Whataburger. – It really has this homemade sensation to it. And the cookies aren’t too crumbly. – They’ve been creamed a little bit. – Yeah, they’ve been cr, just a little– – Even the cookies have been creamed. – Oh man. – This is a special treat. – Yeah, it’s got the dough, it’s got the fudge. Got the chocolate, it’s got the vanilla. – That’s tough to beat, man. – It’s like a ticket to a, to four amusement parks at once. – That’s tough to beat. – It’s tough to deny just the ubiquity of cookies & cream. Blue Bell says it started with them. It’s made its way into all types of shakes. And shenanigans. – I am really partial to Blue Bell at this point because they need to be rewarded for the job that they’re doin’ over there. – It’s a ubiquitous flavor that many brands try to do. – But they did it perfectly. – Whereas Half-Baked is unique. – You think it’s too showy? Is that what you’re gettin’ at? – Well, it’s pretty specific. So it just doesn’t have that broad appeal. – [Rhett] I feel like I can go either way. – I love the dough. – I feel like I can go either way, it’s like I look at ’em, I taste ’em, I appreciate them and then I just find myself running into this cookies ‘n cream and Half-Baked roadblock. – I can’t decide. – Are we gonna need some help to decide? – Yeah. – [Announcer] He’s the devil on your shoulder and the twin Link ate in his mama’s womb, the psychotic czar of sweets and every daddy’s little nightmare, it’s Cotton Candy Randy! (applause and cheering) – [Announcer] Come on over, Randy! – Why couldn’t we have just reached a decision? – Happy Cotton Candy Day, daddies! – Hi Randy. – Do you wanna hear a sweet nothing on this beautiful cream day? – Yes, I do. – Okay! (heavy breathing) I’m working on a secret method for us to make a baby! (laughing) – Lookin’ forward to that. – I’ve seen your browser history and even I think it’s messed up. (laughing) – Well, Randy, thanks for that and thanks for joining us. We’ve got these two ice creams we narrowed it down to. We’ve got Blue Bell cookies ‘n cream and then Ben & Jerry’s Half-Baked. We’d like you to be the final decision here. – All right, Blue Bell! I haven’t had that since I visited my aunt in Beaumont, Texas! (laughing) – Oh, really? – Yeah, she’s a swarm of bats that lives in an oil refinery! (laughing) – Okay. – All right! – Well, give it another taste, make sure you get some cookies in there. – She’s a swarm of– – Oh, yes! – Oh, you want plenty, okay. – Yeah, you want a chunk. (groaning) (laughing) – What was that? – That’s my eating noise! (laughing) Don’t you sound like that when you eat? – I do make a lot of noises, yeah. – Oh, cool. Man, that’s solid! – Yeah, that’s good, huh? – Aw, man, Ben & Jerry’s, let’s see! Are there chunks in this one? – Oh yeah, there’s lots of chunks. – There’s some peanut butter, oh, well, no, there’s cookie dough, no peanut butter. – Oh man! I hope, I hope the chunks are pennies. (groaning) (laughing) (groaning) – Eating noises, that’s a thing. – Gosh dang, that’s good too! – Yeah, that’s why they made it to the Frozen Finale! – You have to make a decision in five– – [Everyone] Four, three, two, one! – Gods, Half-Baked by just this much, just this much, I think it’s the Half-Baked! – All right, well, you can take it with you. And make all the eating noises you want. – Aw, cool, all right! Well, I’m gonna go eat this in the bathroom, bye! (laughing) – Thanks, Randy! – Okay, yeah, I wasn’t gonna eat after him. (groaning) (laughing) – Okay. Half-Baked moves on. You and your roller blades all of a sudden. – [Rhett] Yeah, nice touch, where have those been hidden? – Eh, I just brought ’em out for the finale, I thought it was a nice little touch. – Hey, no, it’s great, don’t be bashful, don’t be bashful! – [Link] It’s great, it’s great, it’s great. – Thanks. – All right, before head into the final match, please join us for a rendition of the National Ice Cream Anthem. I’ve gotten so many chunks, if you wanna get in that business. – I’mma halve the shard, and I’ll give you half the shard too. We’ve been through a lot together. – I mean, there’s just so much. I mean, Haagen-Dazs’s, but you’ve earned it. – I will say, sometimes you just get a bite of just chocolate, though. – [Link] It’s a good bite of chocolate. – [Rhett] But it’s just chocolate, no peanut butter. – And it’s not all chunks, there’s ribbons, there are chunks of peanut butter throughout. And then with the Half-Baked. We got a little melty, but I’m gonna in here to get all the good stuff that’s at the right temperature. – And it’s really, really, really tasty, I mean– – Chocolate chip cookie dough. – We knew that, that’s why it made it here. – So you’ve got two ingredients in a classic combination executed by a wonderful brand that does it right. Versus another wonderful brand. – [Rhett] Wonderful brand! – Two wonderful men, gobs of chocolate chip cookie dough, and the fudge brownie. – Man. – There’s a variety versus a ubiquity. – There’s something about how well this is done. It’s not just the peanut butter, which is perfect, but the ice cream itself is on another level. – I would say that about the Ben & Jerry’s ice cream too. I just don’t think that’s the differentiation. You know how much I love peanut butter, though. – Well, the only thing I’m gonna say about this is I’m coming in for a couple more bites and I haven’t gotten any peanut butter.
