GMM 2227: We Tattoo Strangers

Today we tattoo our fans. For real. – Let’s talk about that. (cheerful music) Good Mythical Summer. – Today we’re going to personally tattoo two Mythical Beasts, and I don’t know if I’m excited about it. – Heh. I’m nervous. – We’re not doing it because it’s right, we’re not doing it because they ask us to, we actually asked them to ask us. – Yeah. – The honest reason we’re doing this is because, when we were presented with the idea, and I heard “tattooing,” I heard “Tatooine,” where Luke Skywalker grew up. At which point I stopped listening, because, I never say no to anything Star Wars related. – Yeah, so thanks to Link’s porous attention span, we’re about to permanently change the appearance of a couple of Mythical Beasts! It’s time for, “We’re Giving Mythical Beasts Actual Tats! We May Have No Experience, but What’s Wrong with Thats?” – Welcome to the Good Mythical Ink Zone! – And please welcome the Mythical Beasts of the hour, Leslie and MJ! – Hello. – [Link] Hey, you two. – Hi. – Hello. – How you feeling? – We’re feeling. (Rhett guffaws) – Now we went ahead and asked you to be seated so there’s less of a chance of you just running. – Mm. I think the door is still open. – Yeah, but we’re in between you and the door. – It’s locked. – Mkay. – This is happening. – Yeah. – Okay, so I think the question that probably a lot of people watching have right now is, why are you willing to let us tattoo you? MJ, do you have a, you wanna start there? – No. (Rhett laughs) – Why on Earth are you doing this? – Why not? – That’s a good question. I don’t have a reason why not, maybe because we’ve never tattooed anyone, because tattoos are permanent. This is the real deal, but you’re, MJ, you’re totally game. – Oh, no, I’m 100% game. – [Link] This is not your first rodeo? – No. I have several tattoos already. – Okay, I see a little butterfly peeking out on your thigh, there. – [MJ] Yeah, it’s my butterthigh. (Rhett laughs) – And you got something on your arm, I know. – Yeah. Yeah. – [Link] Okay. – But Leslie, what about you? – Clean canvas. – You’ve never gotten a tattoo. So, I mean we put out this call, and then you answered it. – I didn’t think I would get this far. (Rhett laughs) I really didn’t think I would get this far. – Right, you’re like “Ah, I’ll cross that bridge when we get there.” “I’m there!” – This is not the first time that we’ve met MJ and Leslie, we actually did a video chat, because, we needed to do some research, so that we could design their tattoos. ‘Cause yeah, not only are we tattooing them, we’re also designing the tattoos. – How do you feel about having a tattoo that will be funny? – A funny tattoo would be hilarious, I think, and a funny story to tell. – I definitely would love for you to have a tattoo that when people saw it, it made ’em smile. – Yeah! – When it comes to sense of humor, like, how would you describe yourself on that front? – So dry. I have such a dry sense of humor. – My impressions is that you’re a very positive force in people’s lives. You like to make people smile, you like to compliment people, you like to bring the best out in other people. – Is there anything that, whether it’s just a particular food, or an animal? – I love cows. When Moochelle comes out, I get so happy. – Okay, that’s good, that’s good to know. – If we created a little flame, it would be an homage to the GMM logo, and the relationship that we have through the show. – Yeah, I love that. – Is there anything else that makes you light up, like cows do? – I’ve been wanting to get a cactus somewhere on my body. – Like a cow, but the udder is a cactus. – [Rhett] Not a cactus, but a cowctus. – That’s cute. – Yeah, I think we can work with this. – Thanks for sharing a little bit about yourself. You’re going to be very pleased. – Thank you so much. – Thanks for having me. – And then I said “Don’t thank us yet.” But we did connect, you know? We got to know each of you. So even if this part is not great, I feel like we’re friends. – “If this part is not great.” Dude, just keep this inside, man. This part is going to be great! You gotta emit confidence, even if you feel unconfident. – We could not have picked two better candidates. – [Rhett] There you go, that’s a good thing to say. – That’s really sweet. – I think you’re great people, and you deserve to have a permanent mark applied by us. We probably just need a little bit more experience. – Yeah, so listen, we’re not just gonna do this blindly, we are going to learn how to do this, and to help us do that, we would like to welcome official, licensed, local tattoo artist Gabby Clarke! (applause) – Hey, Gabby. That’s a nice entrance. – Hello, Gabby. – Thank you. – All right, so you know how to do this. – You’ve got tattoos. – I got, yeah, I have some. – You got ’em, and you give ’em, and you’re gonna teach us. Can you teach us everything we need to know about tattooing in less than two minutes? – Yeah, sure. (laughs) – Let’s get to it. We’re supposed to like eat some bananas so we don’t cramp up? – You gotta have potassium. – So put on your gloves. Lemme get my gloves. – Put on the gloves, starting here. – I’m going to just like give you some pointers before you start ripping through fruit. – [Link] Okay. – So I’m just gonna pull a line from here to here. You use your fingers to kind of lead the tip of the needle. All right, go ahead. To brace it, and, it is gonna feel like, the resistance is real. – [Rhett] Oh, gosh. – Oh, did you see the needle pop out? – [Rhett] I did. – [Gabby] So just the tip. Yep. – I can’t see anything. – [Gabby] Take your sweet time. – [Link] How does it feel, is it intuitive? – You’re running out of ink, hold on. – It feels awesome. – You’ve already used all the ink. Now, I used to be a good drawer. – I mean, so- – [Link] That’s good, Rhett. – Lemme see. – RJN. – Lemme see, we’re gonna rub this ink off with some Vaseline. We’ll see how good this actually is. – Are you about to reveal some errors? – Yeah, this is how you tell. – [Link] Oh. – Okay, so… – Perfect. – Yeah, this R looks great. I mean, a little- – Very prisonesque. – A little shaky at first. – My style is a little avant-garde. And I was gonna complete the M, so listen, my name is not NcLaughlin, it’s McLaughlin. – [Link] You couldn’t even spell your initials right, dude. – I ran out of ink. It’s okay. – That’s a great sign. You don’t even know how to make an M. – I, okay, you go. You see how you do. – Okay. – You wanna switch places? So, the depth was okay, except for that one time I went a little deep. – I mean, just a little bit deep, and then you can just slow down your hand a little bit, I know it gets, once you’re in it, you’re like “Okay, I can finish this line,” and you get kind of ahead of yourself. But just relax. – Let’s see what this feels like, here. – Yeah, ready? You want- Don’t get too close to the skin. – Yeah, yeah, yeah. – Feel it. – Mm, yee. I’m trying to resonate myself to the- – Yes, the feeling. Yes. Yes. – This does not comfort me. Personally. – It’s a needle. – “Have you been to that guy that tattoos and he makes the noise of the, he does harmonies with the needle?” – So do I need to go straight down? I can go at an angle? – [Rhett] 45. – Yeah, you can kind of be at a- So that is not gonna be the most stable. Brace on your hand instead of your pinky, ’cause… – Oh, you mean like this. – Mm-hm. – Oh. – Mm-hm. Mm. – [Rhett] Okay, all right, okay, I don’t… – I think that was on purpose. – I don’t, okay, hold on. What exactly was supposed to happen there? Like where was that line intended to go? – You said we can’t leave? – The door is locked? – The door is locked from the outside. – I feel like my face is turning red. – [Rhett] Yeah, it is. – Is my face turning red? I’m not embarrassed, I’m scared. Like, I’m going into some sort of panic. – I’m still rooting for you. – I’m nervous, man. But don’t tell them. I wore a black tee shirt so they couldn’t see it. (Rhett laughs) I bet ya I’ll do better on this. – Yeah, yeah, he’ll do better on that fake skin. – I’m trying to find my aha moment. – [Rhett] That looks pretty good, Link. – [Gabby] Yeah. Sometimes you just need some time alone with… – Check out that outline of a cactus. – It’s pretty classy. It’s chic. It’s cute. – I like to bring a little brutalism into my tattoo art. – Right, yeah, I don’t believe that’s what is meant by brutalism, but. – I’m ready to do it! – [Rhett] Okay. – [Link] Are you? – Do you think we’re ready? – Yeah. (Rhett laughs) – Do you think we’re ready? – You’re like “Yeah.” – Now, while y’all are figuring out if you’re ready for us to tattoo you, I’ll ask you, are you ready for MythiCon? – I’m ready for MythiCon! – You just thinking about going to MythiCon? Well everything you need to know if you’re going, or just FOMOing is at MythiConTickets.com. – Yeah, don’t FOMO, get your MOFOing tickets. MythiConTickets.com. You know what we should do? We should tattoo people with Mythical tattoos at MythiCon. – Well how ’bout if we get a professional tattoo artist to do just that at MythiCon? – All right, that’s what we’re gonna do. – We’re gonna be pretty busy. – We’re not making this up right now, we have legitimately planned to have a professional tattoo artist have an array of Mythical themed tattoos, and if you wanna get one, you can get one only at MythiCon. – Yes, also, I’m doing a little performance as James and the Shame, and DJ Rhett, AKA Link the DJ is also- – I don’t call myself DJ Rhett but I’m gonna be doing a DJ set. – By then you’ll have your DJ name, your official DJ name. – I hope so. – Can you debut your official DJ name at MythiCon? Because that’s my request. – I don’t know, I’m not prepared to say that. I’m kind of in a weird head space right now, but don’t miss MythiCon, tickets are limited, go to MythiConTickets.com for everything you need to know, and get those tickets while they last, all right? (electric guitar strum) – [Gabby] Smells like tattoo time. – See, this is the part that I would be comfortable doing, like cleaning an arm. I’d be good at this. – Man, this is getting real. Like now that I’m close to it, I see it’s a person’s arm. It’s attached to Leslie and she’s right there. – Yep. – This is her life, man. – Don’t say it like that. I feel like you guys are more nervous. – Yeah, we are. – [Gabby] So I would do little segments like that. Just like little tiny lines. – Little tiny segments. – [Gabby] Yeah, and then watch the speed of my hand, too, and how deep the needle goes. – Just to help me, ’cause I am getting nervous, you know. – That’s okay. – My nervous is peaking, just a little bit, because it’s about to be a real thing. You can make it all better, no matter how bad we are. – Yeah, I have faith in myself that I could fix things up. – I have my faith in you. – Thank you. – That’s a properly placed faith, okay. – Yeah, so, I would just bring the needle up that way, if you’re ready. – [Rhett] I am ready. – All right. I’m gonna be handing you, I’ll tell you when we might- – I don’t know why I’m not nervous. – [Gabby] Need more ink. You’re not? – I don’t know why. – ‘Cause this is internet gold! – [Gabby] You’re confident. Really stabilize your hand. – [Link] Ooh. – [Gabby] And then pull it out. Okay. – How did that feel, Leslie? – It felt okay. – I squigglied a little bit. – [Leslie] It’s okay. – [Gabby] So yeah, just like, don’t pull it with your wrist, bring it like your whole hand is staying still. Like yeah. – Eee! Eee! – Visualization. – Eee! – Yeah. – It really does help me to ink. – [Gabby] Yeah. – When the eenk is going in, I’m eenking you. – It only helps you. – Exactly, I’m the one who needs help, man! – But if that helps you, then that helps MJ. – [MJ] Okay. (needle buzzing) – All right. – It feels good! It tickled a little bit. – Did it tickle? Look into my eyes. – [MJ] A little bit. (needle buzzing) – Man, he’s really doing it! – Link. – That was pretty good. – Yeah. – [Link] Leslie, you’re such a rock. – Thank you. – Yep, amazing. – That was great. That was a nice line. – Meeree. – Don’t do it. – Mee, be still. Oh, I think I might’ve just created a problem. (needle buzzing) – I feel like, yeah. Feel like I’m getting too tender-footed. – Have you messed up already? – Nope, we’re still good. – We’re still good? He’s sinking the needle in once again. – Link. – To bring more ink permanently in, what’d you? Is that what you wanted to do? – Yeah. – Good. – And make sure you stretch the skin a lot. – You know, Leslie, the first tattoo I got was also on the internet. It was on my butt cheek. – Hm, well, I’m glad I didn’t place mine there. – When that needle first went in, the first thing I thought was “Man, this hurts!” The skin on my butt cheek felt like it was a quarter inch thick. Like he was just having to bust through it, to write my wife’s name in cursive. How does this feel compared to that? – I don’t know how to respond to that. – I can’t find the needle. – You’re shaking. – I can’t see it. – [Gabby] I think it’s also ’cause the skin gets kind of more stretchy. – All right. I need a break! (electric guitar strum) We’re taking a break. It sure would be nice if we had a little special guest come in at this time. – Maybe like a professional, to quickly make sure that we’re doing this the right way? I mean, a professional in addition to Gabby. – Yeah. Yeah. That’s what I’m thinking. – No. No way. Oh my goodness! It’s Madame Moochelle! Hello, beloved. – [Rhett] You approve? (Moochelle grunts) (Rhett chuckles) (electric guitar strum) – I’m gonna turn it on. – Here I go! (crew chuckles) Mm! Oh god. – You got this. – You know, it’s really not about thinking, it’s just about doing. Gabby, is this typically the level of complexity that someone would learn to tattoo? – No. – Oh, really. – No. – You go a lot more simpler, like… – Like small, very small. – [Link] What, like a smiley face? – Yeah. – Oh my goodness. – It’s coming together. (needle buzzes) (needle buzzes) – Ooh, it’s all over the place. That was crazy. That was like the most squiggle… – You’re a little nervous. – I’m not nervous. – [Leslie] Okay. – Urgh! – Maybe I don’t wanna look at this one. – So MJ, how do you hear the conversations that you’re gonna have for the rest of your life, in your own head right now? How do you hear it going? Like a stranger says “Excuse me.” And then you kinda know what they’re gonna say. – I’d wait for them to ask the question. – “What’s your tattoo?” – I’ll probably ask them. Be like “What do you think it is?” – Ooh, yes! “What do you think it is?” – I mean, not sassy, but. – “What do you think it is?” – [MJ] There we go. – I’m not happy with my performance, Gabby. But I’m not- – You can’t say that in front of me! – I haven’t done anything catastrophic. I mean, there’s no blood happening. That’s great. Let’s stress the positive. – That was good. – And I think this might be a good time for Gabby to step in, and… – God, I’m so sweaty! – Take some of the pressure off of us, and off of Leslie. – I’m great. – [Gabby] Leslie, you’re a good sport. – I’m doing fantastic. – Thank you so much, Leslie, for… – So I’m gonna wipe it with a- – Being my support structure. – [Leslie] Yeah. – I couldn’t have done this to you without me. – So when is it my turn to tattoo you guys? – Oh, was that in the contract? – [Leslie] I think so. – I’m just gonna wipe this with a little bit of green soap, so we can see what’s going on under here a little bit. – I feel like that looks good. – Honestly, this isn’t really terrible. Like, they didn’t blow any lines out. – I am so glad that you were game for this, this is great. This is awesome. – The udders were a great touch. – Alrighty, you’ve got a tattoo of a cowctus. – I do! (electric guitar strum) – Our job here is done. – We are pleased to present to you, starting with Leslie’s Be Your Mythical Best fire flower. – [Leslie] I think it is amazing. – [Link] Hohohoho! – Oh my gosh, I love it so much. Thank you guys so much. – What’s your mom gonna think about it? She wasn’t particularly excited about this. – You know, she saw it and she said “Wow.” – Oh, right, ’cause she’s here, she’s in the green room. – She is in the green room. – It is wow. It’s great. It’s refined, yet charismatic. It’s gonna bring a smile to people’s faces, just like you do, Leslie. – It’s so lifelike, so realistic, those leaves especially. – I’m glad you’re happy. – Thank you so much, yeah. – And over here, MJ has the one of a kind cowctus tattoo. It looks amazing. – [MJ] Yay! – How you feel? – I’m so happy. I’m just happy to be here, but this is awesome. – And it really works with your other tattoos on your arm, I love the ensemble nature of that right arm. – [MJ] Yeah, yeah, I think they go well together. – It’s a little funny, a little punny. – Yeah. – Give us a little udder action. – Oh. – Oh, yeah! – [Rhett] You get that udder stretch. – Oof, oof, oof. Oh, what’s the sound? – Yep. – Well lemme tell ya, this was a whole lot harder than I thought it was gonna be. – Yes, Gabby, I have a whole new appreciation for what you do. I thought it was gonna come a little bit easier. – Yeah! – But I’m so glad that you were here to make them look good. – Thank you for your patience, and for being a master teacher. – I’m glad that I could be that.
