GMM 2294: Surprising Food Combos Taste Test

Can you eat two things but only taste a third? – Let’s talk about that. (bright music) Good mythical morning. – Today we’re gonna find out if you can combine one food with another food to create the taste of an entirely different food. – And a portion of today’s episode is sponsored by ShipStation, but more on that later. – Now, many claim to have experienced this phenomenon of eating two things at once and suddenly getting hit with a bolt of brain lightning that says, “Hey, what I’m tasting is neither of the things that I’m eating.” It’s a flavor illusion, Rhett. I’ve never experienced it, but I want to. – I think even if I have experienced it, I think I eat too quickly to think about this, so I’m gonna have to eat slowly and actually actually comprehend what’s happening. It’s time for gravy mixed with pancakes tastes exactly like beef stew! Okay, we made that one up but let’s see if these other ones are true. Okay, there’s not much research documenting this strange mouth experience here in the state, but we did manage to do some, boopity-boop-boop-boop, research. Well, we found some research. We didn’t do the research, because the people, some scientists in Japan did the research, and they found the food mix method is what they called it. That’s pretty intuitive. And they didn’t offer- – That’s the type of thing that happens in Japan. – Yeah, they’re doing things and then they’re labeling them. – Right, right. – Things that we should be doing here, you know? – The spirit of Tokyo. – Whaaaaaaaat! I didn’t even take a breath for that one. – It’s been too long. – Because it was so- – It’s been too long, Rhett, I had to throw you a bone. – Okay, they didn’t offer any explanation as to why this phenomenon takes place. They just kind of acknowledge its existence. – That’s good enough for me. – I think it just happens because two things sometimes taste like one. – Well, here’s what they said. The combination of specifically pickled radish and hot milk. – Hot milk, you say? – Tastes like corn soup, and flan mixed with soy sauce tastes like sea urchin. But I don’t wanna try either one of those. – And we’re not, because we’re actually gonna be trying versions that you have experienced. Yes, you submitted combinations that you swear create undeniable flavor illusions, and we’re gonna test those out. (drum music) – [Stevie] Gentlemen, directly in front of you is one half of a flavor illusion combo, caramel sauce. – Caramel sauce. – Okay, it’s caramel sauce. – [Stevie] Then you have a lineup of other foods, strawberry mochi, fried cheese curds, and chicken pot pie, one of which is the correct missing half to the flavor illusion combo, surrounded by decoys. – This is fun. – Yes. – Already, I haven’t eaten anything. – [Stevie] For five points, can you tell me both which food mixes with caramel sauce to create a whole other flavor and what that new flavor is? – With no, nothing to go on? Okay, let’s start with the mochi. Mochi. – Now, like, now this just seems like a good idea. Like, this doesn’t seem like I’m trying to make it taste like it’s something else. It’s just, I’m trying to have a good time. – What’s inside of this mochi, Trevor? – Mochi. – [Trevor] Mochi. (crew laughs) – [Rhett] Yeah. – It’s, like, strawberry. – You didn’t even need Trevor for that, ’cause I said the same thing right before he said it. Cheese curds dipped in caramel. – [Link] Not bad. – This isn’t something that I would choose to do. – But it’s something that I’m being made to do, and I’m not complaining. – Boy, I like that. Oh, I gotta think if it tastes like something. – I feel like this is the one that should be something. I shouldn’t tell you that, but… (crew laughs) – Okay, and now chicken pot pie. I don’t know, I’m just gonna kinda just pour some caramel on it. – Oo, it’s so hot. Is it hot? – It is a little bit hot. It’s not as hot as you made it seem. – Trevor! That’s not great. – I think I would’ve preferred that without the caramel sauce. – Yeah, or the pot pie, one or the other. – Okay. – [Stevie] I forgot to mention there’s a lot on the line because the winter wins a very special piece of flavor combination art, and I know y’all have been talking about how you’ve been looking for flavor combination art. – Right, yeah. – [Stevie] So- – We’ve been talking to our flavor combination art dealers and they’re all coming up dry. (crew laughs) So we have this nice little thing. We gotta fill out both sides of it, huh? – Okay, I don’t know if I’m right, but I feel like I’m right within my own little universe, if that makes sense. Like, I feel like I tasted something. – Okay. Ready? – So I agree with you, it’s the cheese curds has to be the thing that is creating the taste, and I thought it tasted like fried chicken. – Oh, I said chicken and waffles. – I was gonna say chicken and waffles, but I thought that’s not- – That’s kind of a cop out? – Well- – I did think fried chicken, too, and that’s why I changed it, but- – I almost added “and waffles,” just so you know. So I think we’ve gotta be on the right track. – We agree. – [Stevie] Interesting. You’re incorrect. (buzzer sounds) But it is interesting that you chose the same thing. So I’m gonna take your points down. – Yeah, who’s really incorrect now? – [Stevie] Now you have three points on the line here. For three points, can you guess which ingredient pairs with caramel sauce to create the flavor which is funnel cake. – [Link] Funnel cake. – Just two boys eating, trying to figure out what they’re not eating. (laughs) – Yeah. – Okay? Funnel cake, you say. – Ready. – Cheese curds. – Cheese curds. (crew laughs) – I mean- – Yeah, I mean- – It’s the cheese curds. – I see it. – [Stevie] Yeah. – That’s it, right? – [Stevie] Yeah, we’re gonna switch things up for round two, but yeah, you’re right. So according to- – I think this is a good little anecdote. – [Stevie] According to Mythical Beast Maddie, aka MadDog3001 on Twitter, caramel sauce mixed with fried cheese curds tastes like funnel cake. Is that, do feel like that’s correct? – It also tastes like chicken and waffles. – [Stevie] Like, now that you, you said chicken and waffles, but, like, do you think chicken and waffles is closer or you think funnel cake is closer? – I see the funnel cake. I will accept that answer and us being both wrong. It’s a breakthrough. – It is, and it’s accurate. (drum music) – [Stevie] Okay, for five points, which of these foods mix with chocolate syrup to create a whole other flavor and what is that new flavor? Is it lemonade, blue cheese, or tomato paste? – Tomato paste. – Do you like any of the things in front of you right now? – Uh, I like chocolate syrup. I mean, putting that in lemonade is strange. – Yeah, but it does, these all feel like they could create something, though. They all feel like they hold some sort of, oh, okay. – [Stevie] And I’ll give you a little hint. The thing that, the flavor you’re trying to find, it’s a a brand of something. – It’s a brand. – Well, I don’t know if it’s chocolate syrup and lemonade. (laughs) – This seems like something you could do, something that might occur to you. – We just did it. You think this would occur to you? I don’t know if it would occur to me. – I meant you mix chocolate syrup in liquids. – Okay, I’m just gonna, I like both of these things. – I didn’t think that was horrible, but it didn’t strike me as being anything. – Now, blue cheese, the thing about both of these flavors- – I hate blue cheese. – They’re such strong flavors. Like, chocolate covers a world of hurt as we’ve talked about, and blue cheese is so pungent. Man, the blue cheese is winning this battle. I gotta feel like I gotta go less blue cheese, more chocolate, try to find something here, cause that just tasted like blue cheese to me. – Yeah, ’cause you’re not telling us the ratios. That’s what’s so tough about this, Stevie. You’re holding back so much – A brand. – Tomato paste. I immediately tasted something. I have my answer, like, immediately with that one. – Well, hold on, I don’t. – Because, and I almost said it out loud, because I didn’t know what tomato paste would taste like. And the only reason I’m comfortable saying it out loud is ’cause I have no clue if I’m right, but I feel strongly. I think I’m onto something. – There is one that seems like it created a new taste and not just two things mixing together fighting each other. But this feels, for me, this feels, I don’t think my final guess is correct. This is weird, but maybe it’s right? – I’ll go first. I said tomato sauce or paste makes cranberry sauce. – Oh, that’s my favorite brand. – Like, that’s what it just, it just hit me over the head. – Okay. I didn’t taste cranberry sauce but I think I’m tasting something that may get close with tomato paste to Coke. Apparently I’m wrong because there’s lots of- – [Stevie] “Hmm,” there’s a lot of “hmm,” yeah. You’re both incorrect. (buzzer sounds) – Okay. – [Stevie] I am gonna give you what you’re trying to achieve here, and so if you can guess the correct ingredient that pairs with chocolate sauce to get this achievement, you’ll get the three points. – Okay. – [Stevie] You’re trying to achieve a Tootsie Roll. – Tootsie Roll. Well, that, a Tootsie Roll is just chocolate. – That’s interesting, ’cause I’m not making this up, but that, it’s one of these, I can’t remember which one it was, the Tootsie Roll crossed my mind, but then I was like, it’s just chocolate, So I’m not gonna say that. But I do have my answer, and I actually think, I think this person has a point, unless I’m completely wrong. – Yeah, I got it. (crew laughs) Yeah, I think I have it. – All right, three, two, one. It’s tomato paste. – Blue cheese. The blue cheese and the chocolate is definitely Tootsie Roll. – I thought it was the tomato paste. – It’s just a little bit of blue cheese goes a long way, though. – [Stevie] According to @Hamburguesa67 on Twitter, chocolate syrup mixed with lemonade tastes like Tootsie Rolls. – Are you serious? – I was sure that I was right. – I was sure that I was right. – You know why? It’s ’cause we’re tasting so much chocolate. – And Amber’s sure that she’s right. – Well. hold on. – No one’s right. – Here’s the reason that both of… We can all be right here, and I’m gonna defend both of us. – We’re, are we both right? – The citrus of and sort of bite of lemonade added to chocolate is what, I guess, makes Tootsie Roll. Well, that comes from both tomato paste, which has got a tang to it, and obviously blue cheese has that. So all three of these are tangy things. – No, listen, it’s simple. Tootsie Rolls are chocolate with something wrong with it. (crew laughs) (drum music) – Before we get to uncovering the next flavor illusion, this portion of today’s episode is sponsored by ShipStation, the leading order management and shipping software on the internet. If you sell anything online, listen up. – With the holidays around the corner, I’ve got a confession to make. Listen, I know that I come off as this calm, cool, go with the flow kinda guy, right? But- – Of course. – In truth, even I can get stressed out around this time of year. – Even you, Link. – Even me. – I don’t believe it. – Yes, it’s true. There’s just so much to do, Rhett. And your options are blueberries, black licorice- – [Link] Boo. – [Stevie] Or cinnamon gummy bears. And I will note for this round, we have been instructed to taste the ingredient first and the Doritos second in order to achieve- – Oh, this one came with instructions. I like it. – Yeah. Yeah. – Is that right? Now, I really want us to get one of these- – I think we will. – At first, you know? – I believe it. So, blueberry. Dorito. (chips crunching) There’s, like, a slightly blueberry flavored Dorito. (crew laughs) Is that something you ever thought you wanted? – No. I didn’t like it. – Black licorice, obviously- – [Link] I don’t want- – It’s gonna do things for me and do things to you. – I already did the blue cheese. It’s like, what? – It’s so specific. It’s gotta do something. And it’s gonna stick with you as you eat this Dorito. (chips crunching) – The Dorito covers it up. – Hmm, not if you get enough. There’s something to that, but let me try and figure out what it is. (chips crunching) – Okay. – Okay. (crew laughs) All right. And cinnamon. Cinnamon. – Now, this looks like a panda. This doesn’t look like a bear. – Say that again. (crew laughs) What are, what do people call- – Look at it, dude. – [Rhett] What do people call pandas? – Does this look like a bear or a panda? – What do people call panda sometimes when they wanna, like, give even more emphasis? – A panda bear. – Yeah. (crew laughs) But when I think of a bear, I don’t think of a panda. – Well, that’s obvious. (crew laughs) Now, I kinda like that right there. – A cinnamon Dorito? (chips crunching) – I got something, y’all. I believe this is the first one that feels definitive. – Yeah, I’m a little bit lost, but you know what I’m saying. Like, a bear, I mean, when you say bear- (crew laughs) – Yeah, yeah, you’re not talking about a panda bear. You’re talking about a- – Any other type of bear. – Any other bear. I think I found something, guys, or I think I found what you were laying down. – All right, you go first. – I believe it was the black licorice, and I believe it tastes like pepperoni pizza. – Oh, I said black licorice but I think I’m in a Mexican restaurant eating some molcajete. – [Crew Member] What? – Okay. (crew members speaking off mic) – Yeah, that’s, like, the container, isn’t it? (crew laughs) – What? – Isn’t that? – [Crew Member] It’s also a dish. – It’s also a dish? (crew member speaks off mic) – Okay, that comes in the same thing. – See, it’s the dish that comes in the container by the same name. – By the same name. – A panda by any other name is still a bear. – And what is in that dish? Some flavors that you might- – Uh, yeah, it was something, I’ve had it once. (crew laughs) It’s like a soup, kinda. – [Stevie] According to at @WaywardDentrite on Twitter, nacho cheese Doritos mixed with black licorice tastes like pepperoni pizza. (Rhett laughs) (bell dings) – Hey, do you not taste that? It hit me. I was gonna say pepperoni, but then I was like, the cheese. It’s ’cause licorice has the same thing that’s in sausage, which is in, that makes pepperoni have that kinda bite to it. – I’ll be danged. – But take it, do it again. (chips crunching) – I’m just going eat more Doritos. – It’s overwhelmed, like, once you think pepperoni- – I do get it, and I do have a confession to make. The only reason I said molcajete is ’cause I just wanted to seem smart. – Oh. – I felt like I seemed really stupid earlier. (crew laughs) And I even put the thing on it. – I think you did it. You seemed real smart in that last round. (chip crunches) (drum music) – [Stevie] Okay, for five points, which of these foods mixes with strawberry soda to create a whole other flavor and what’s that new flavor? Your options are root beer, matcha latte, and baked beans. – Baked beans. – Root beer and strawberry soda. – I kinda of feel like- – I think I’m just gonna put both in my mouth and- – Yeah. – Get ready. – Ugh. I don’t like it. (crew laughs) – I love it, man. – [Link] I don’t really like this. – It does the same thing for me that black licorice does. – Okay, this is making a new experience in my mouth, but is it definitive enough to be my guess? – To me, the root beer is so overpowering that it makes it taste like root beer with a hint of strawberry, and I can’t get something new. – Mm. Mmgh. – I don’t know how anybody would discover this unless they were, like, literally standing around tasting everything. – Some people get bored, man. – Well, you can imagine that somebody mixed two sodas together. You can imagine that somebody was having just a bowl of beans and some strawberry soda. But who’s doing matcha latte and strawberry soda together? I mean, that’s- – It’s, this matcha latte is so thick. Koala, also not a bear. – I will say that if you tell me, “Hey, I saw a bear today.” – I don’t picture a panda or a koala. – I’m not gonna be like, I’m not gonna say, “Panda?” – “Koala?” (crew laughs) – I do agree with that. – Polar? – But I just found it interesting that you looked at something that looked like a bear that was made outta gummy and said, “Now when I see this, I don’t think bear, I think panda.” – All right, I’m writing down my answer. I’m not happy about it. I’m not proud of it. – This is nuts. Okay, go ahead, Link. – When you add matcha to your strawberry soda, you get candy corn. – Interesting. I said it was the matcha, as well, but I thought it tasted like oatmeal, and I thought it tasted like oatmeal with a little strawberry in it. (laughs) Strawberry oatmeal. (crew laughs) – Strawberry oatmeal. – [Stevie] Um, okay. – Anybody close? – No. I’m gonna give you the flavor you’re trying to achieve. – Okay. – [Stevie] Okay. For three points. And you’re gonna guess the ingredient paired. The flavor is bubblegum. – I think I know without even tasting ’em again. – Bubblegum. – And they’re, you know what, they’re right. – Okay, I mean, I’m guessing the beans. – Oh, it’s the root beer. It’s the root beer. It has that bubblegum taste to it. – I think that’s, no, I thought that was like cough syrup. – I think- – Which is too obvious. – Bubblegum flavor has a little slight medicinal little kick to it. – [Stevie] According to @_littledarkling on Twitter, strawberry soda mixed with root beer tastes like bubblegum. (bell rings) – It does. Once you, like, try it again. – Tastes like cough syrup. – Well, I think you just have aversion to root beer that’s getting in the way of it. But if you think about bubblegum, it does have, like, what does bubblegum taste like? Just a straight up pink bubblegum that’s not flavored like a fruit. – You’re right. – It’s got, like- – I definitely taste it. – It’s got a medicine. – There’s a certain type of gum, and it’s the type that I don’t like, like that- – It’s when you get bubblegum flavor at the dentist. – Yeah, that little- – That’s what it taste like. – That little bubblegum. All right, I mean, clearly you’ve won. – Oh, the twisty bubblegum. – Yep. – The classic bubblegum. Yeah, that’s what it tastes like. – And the smaller one than that. All right, what did he get? What is that? That’s a- – I got a strange combination (crew laughs) of me and you. – I’m glad you won that, Rhett. Where should I expect to see this on a- – In our office right between me and you. – Okay. – At all times. We’re gonna have it on a string in between the two of us. Hey, listen, I didn’t know if this was gonna be a thing. I was a little suspect. Also, just because we weren’t, like, looking up some scientific thing, we were just, like, taking your submissions. Not that I don’t trust you. But let me say- – Yeah. – That- – Good work. – It actually does work. And I think that those two examples, the… I think maybe all of them kinda work somewhat. – The two examples you got right? – No, well, for me, those were the ones that made sense. I couldn’t kinda, I couldn’t really get the other ones. But the pepperoni pizza and then the bubblegum really did it for me. – Try it yourself. Thanks for subscribing and clicking that bell. – You know what time it is. – I’m Caitlyn from the Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania currently in the lower Yukon of Alaska, and it’s time to spin the Wheel of Mythicality. – Oh, it looks so warm up there. – Beautiful, though. – Click the top link to watch us guess which candy Stevie is chewing by listening to the sound of her mouth (crew laughs) in Good Mythical More. – And to find out where the Wheel of Mythicality’s gonna land. – [Rhett] Unleash your legendary style with our line of Mythical grooming and personal care products, available now at amazon.com/mythical.
