GMM 2460: We Tried EVERY Canned Biscuit

In the land of biscuits, is Pillsbury really the king of the hill? – Let’s talk about that. (cheerful music) Good Mythical Morning. – In all the Gut Checks that we’ve ever done, we have committed to tasting every flavor, form, and fashion of a singular major snack brand. But, hold on to your guts, because we’re doing Gut Check with a twist, biscuits style. – Yeah. Now when you think of biscuits in a can, you probably think of Pillsbury, because, they have the market cornered with so many different biscuit variations, it’s hard to even spot the competition. But, they are not the only storebought biscuit game in town, and that does beg the question, which can holds the best biscuit? – It’s time for Gut Check, Canned Biscuits Edition. – [Stevie] Today you’ll be tasting every leading canned biscuit the Mythical crew could find. After you try each flavor, you’ll give it a score of one to 100 based on your gut reactions. Then you’ll taste the top four to determine which one is officially too legit to biscuit. – Oh, yeah. – Bisquick. – [Stevie] And if at any time you’d like to reset your palate, I do declare that there is some not refreshing, not sweet, not iced tea to wet your whistle. It’s just hot herbal tea. – Is it hot? Is it real hot? – It’s not real hot. – It’s not real hot? Okay. Have it later. And I have a scoring aid, of course. Y’all always taking care of me. That’s a beautiful picture of biscuits in a basket. The moldy one down here is a score of zero. And then if I keep going this way, I get happier until I get to 100. – Yeah, we know how it works. Here’s my scoring aid. – You keep asking for ’em. – [Rhett] 100… – [Link] They know you don’t need it. – Is hish…? – High. – High, ah. (crew laughs) I was like “Hish?” Zero is lower. Trying is important. You don’t need to just do platitudes to me. – Actually, this is kinda helpful for me as well. These are biscuits. – You can have that one as well. – Big, small, low, high. – Let’s eat some biscuits. I am excited about this, but I’m also a little bit nervous that I might not like biscuits by the end of eating this many with nothing else. Just straight biscuit? – [Stevie] Okay, we’re gonna kick things off with the Pillsbury category, starting with Pillsbury Flaky Layers Buttermilk biscuits. – Okay. – That’s a dense biscuit. – Does your scale…? Is 100 a biscuit that Grandma would make, or the best canned biscuit you can think of? – It doesn’t say. (crew laughs) – ‘Cause if I go with a biscuit I could get at Bojangles, or a biscuit that a grandma would make as 100? – I think this is the canned biscuits scale. Even though it doesn’t say that, that’s what I’m gonna do. But I’m gonna give that one… – 70. – Really? I didn’t like it. It’s too dense, there wasn’t a lot to it. 30. – [Stevie] Grands! Southern Homestyle Original biscuits. – Okay. Grand. – I just think a lot of ’em are gonna taste exactly the same. Like that denseness that you’re talking, that’s why I adjusted my scale. I feel like you’re on grandma scale, just, no shade. – “No shade.” That one’s better, I’m gonna go for 42. – It tastes exactly the same. 70. – [Stevie] Grands! Southern Homestyle Buttermilk biscuits. – Okay. (crew chuckles) It’s not any different. – Are we being pranked? – I mean, this one’s not any different. 42. – 70. – [Stevie] Grands! Southern Homestyle Butter Tastin’ biscuits. – Butter tastin’? – Butter tastin’. – Butter tastin’. – Mkay. Well, it’s… – It’s better. It tastes a little more like butter. – It’s got some, are you tasting some butter tastin’? – Oh! Aftertaste, 72. You get an aftertaste? – Yeah, the aftertaste is kinda like- – Butter. – It’s like movie popcorn butter type of thing, it’s like a fakey butter. I’d rather add it. I’m going back down to thirtyseight. – “Thirtyseight.” – [Stevie] Grands! Southern Homestyle Honey Butter biscuits. – Okay. – Oh. That’s tasty. – But would it be good on something that…? Hm. – I mean, I don’t disagree with you that I like to put things on the biscuit, but I don’t have those things. I’m just tasting the biscuit. – Yeah. – Do you know what I’m getting at? – Yeah. I can’t decide, so I’m- – 78. That one was pretty good. – I’m still in like a 47 zone. – [Stevie] Grands! Southern Homestyle Southern Recipe biscuits. – Well what’s the recipe? – Are they changing anything? Like they’re just adding different words. – Who’s being marketed to? – People not in the South, I think. – “Oh, Southern recipe? I’d like to try that. Never been, but I’d like to try it.” – That’s pretty good. – I think it might be better than the previous ones, but not as good as that last one. 74. – Nope, 50. This is my favorite so far. – I got a tight spread today. – [Stevie] Grands! Flaky Layers Original biscuits. – All right. See, when you get to the flaky- – Whoa, whoa, look at the flayers. The flayers. – I know, I was. I have my own. (crew laughs) Does it make it taste different, though? – Yeah. There’s more air. – It tastes more bready. – It’s not necessarily better though, is it? It’s a little bit better. – 45. – 71. – 45, we’re both in these tight zones, ’cause all these biscuits are the same! – [Stevie] Grands! Flaky Layers Buttermilk biscuits. – I think we’re going through the same things, with layers. I got a little crispy bite on that one. Which is influencing me. – I like, that was 53. – 73. – [Stevie] Grands! Flaky Layers Sweet Hawaiian biscuits. – Okay. – What? – Okay. – Sweet Hawaiian? – Mm-hm. It tastes like a Hawaiian roll. Which is not really what I’m after in a biscuit. – No, it doesn’t belong in the world of biscuits. – It tastes good, though. 61. – I exactly agree with you, but we’re on two different scales, I’m staying in my scale here. – That’s evident. You need mine to double check yours? – No. 38. I’m good, I’m liking this zone right here. – [Stevie] Grands! Flaky Layers Butter Tastin’ biscuits. – Okay, I get it. ‘Cause I like the layers better, and I like… That Butter Tastin’ aftertaste, though. It’s like they make a biscuit, and then right before they put it in the can, which has a different little word on it, they just add a little something, a little butter tastin’, a little buttermilk, a little something. – It’s less butter tastin’ than the other Butter Tastin’, but it’s got layers. I expected to taste more butter, but I didn’t. But I liked it, ’cause it’s layers. 75. – 53. – [Stevie] Grands! Flaky Layers Honey Butter biscuits. – This might be the one. – ‘Kay. I definitely like the layers. Kinda opens the biscuit up. – But the other flavor doesn’t hit as hard. Yes it does, but it’s not flaky. Maybe ’cause the air is getting in the way of some of the flavor. – I don’t think I’m loving the honey. I’m back in 40. – I do like the honey. 78. – I like to add honey to a biscuit, but it’s different than the honey that’s in that biscuit. – Yeah. – [Stevie] Okay, that concludes our Pillsbury category, so it’s time to see if the rest of the biscuits stack up. – Okay. – I haven’t left the 70s yet, today. – I haven’t left the lower 50s. – Yeah. That means you’ve not liked any of them, according to my scale. – I’m not on your scale! – [Stevie] With Annie’s organic flaky biscuits. – But even on your scale, down there it’s got a, look! 40 and 50, 50 you’re not even happy! You’re not even going by your scale! – That’s a tall biscuit. Annie’s got a biscuit taller than any Pillsbury biscuit. Is their can longer? – That tastes more like a traditional biscuit to me, than any Pillsbury did. 80! – Good gracious, Rhett. It’s got (indistinct). It is a… – It’s better! I mean, according to me. – Gimme another bite. No, no. – What did you say is make that face if, that face at 40. – I’m disappointed in all these biscuits. – Okay, I just wanted to be clear, here. You haven’t liked any of the biscuits. – I like, this is a 54. – Okay. – [Stevie] Trader Joe’s organic biscuits. – Okay. ♪ Mm-hm, hm hm ♪ ♪ I’m gonna hum so you don’t hear us chewing ♪ ♪ Why don’t I start doing that ♪ – This is the first actively disliked biscuit by me. 49. Sorry, Trader. – It’s got a weird taste in there that sends me to 20. See, we’re agreeing, and this is intact. – I don’t hate it, just actively dislike it, a little bit. – [Stevie] Aldi’s Bake House jumbo buttermilk flaky biscuits. – Do we have to give you a quarter to get it, but then after we eat the biscuit, you get the quarter back? – Now that’s a weird- – That’s a joke, for people who’ve shopped at Aldi, and you have to pay for the carts. – Eat your biscuit. Aldi. – All dese biscuits are dry. – Bland. (crew laughs) – Get it? Aldi’s. – Every single one of these? – Every single one has been dry. That just tastes like bread. – 24. – 48. – [Stevie] Immaculate Baking Company organic flaky biscuits. – Okay. – Promises a lot. – And it looks good. Hm… Oh! It tastes like a Pillsbury. – I think it’s got a little bit of fakey flavor to it, but not entirely unpleasant. 61. – I think the fakey flavor, 61? Is what makes a canned biscuit a canned biscuit. – You’re tasting the can a little bit. – I’m tasting that can a little bit. And you know what? Honestly, I like it. 57. But still within the scale. This is where I’m working. – Yeah, all right, mm-hm. – [Stevie] Great Value butter flavor flaky jumbo biscuits. – Hey, don’t count ’em out just ’cause they’re Great Value. – I’m looking for something to just knock my socks off. – Well… – It should’ve already happened. – It’s not great, but it’s like a real deal biscuit. – Yeah, the butter in this one tastes very real. – 74. Great Value. I mean, there’s nothing weird about that biscuit. You know Walmart knows how to make biscuits, man. – I’m at a 53 with that one. – [Stevie] Happy Belly jumbo buttermilk biscuits. – This is like Amazon brand, right? – But I like the name. – [Stevie] Correct. – Amazon. It’s Amazon brand. – Happy Belly, though? – Happy Belly is Amazon’s brand. – They’re all the same. I mean, unless they infuse it with a little this or that. – This one’s a little yeastier. – It’s not as good. Not as exciting. – [Rhett] It isn’t as good. – 28. – Eh, 52. – [Stevie] Kroger buttermilk biscuits. – Keep it simple, Kroger. That’s a little biscuit. – Bring it over. It’s like a yeast roll. – You sure it’s not for dogs? It’s so little. – It’s not a biscuit! It’s a yeast roll. – Kroger, what happened? What happened? – 15. – I mean, I’m just trying to think about it for a second. – [Link] I don’t know what happened. – It’s not that I don’t like it, it’s just not a biscuit. 24. – [Stevie] Kroger flaky buttermilk biscuits. – Mkay. This is a biscuit. – Is it flaky, though? Hm… – Mm… – They’re all the same. – That’s pretty similar to others I’ve tasted, but… – 54. – I don’t dislike it. I mean, 63. – 54 is my new 75. – [Stevie] ‘Kay. – I mean, this is what I’ve done. I think it’s because of the way that they made my scoring chart. – It’s their fault. Yeah. – You really gotta, I can’t turn the corner and go back this direction, like, it’s not a spectrum to go back that direction, so my scale actually only goes to 50 in my mind. I think that’s really what happened. – I’m sorry for you. – [Stevie] Kroger butter flavored jumbo biscuits. – Jumbo. Not that big, I mean. I guess when you start with something the size of a snail, anything’s bigger than that. – It’s very yellow. – Okay. That butter flavor’s coming hard. But I don’t like the consistency as much. – That fake butter. – I’m missing the flakiness. I like the taste. 66. – 24. – [Stevie] Kroger flaky butter flavored jumbo biscuits. – Okay, so that’s got all the stuff that I wanted from Kroger. There’s layers. – Nobody’s doing better than Pillsbury. – Except Annie. (Link growls) – [Link] So hard to differentiate. – I like this one. I like this one quite a lot, it has all the things that I wanted, and I do like the butter flavor. – That butter flavor… – I don’t have real butter. It’s not available, it’s only the butter that comes in that. – Yeah, but it’s like that fake popcorn butter stuff. – Which I also like. 76. – 33. – [Stevie] And that concludes our non-Pillsbury category. You’ve now tasted every canned biscuit available, and your scores will now be tabulated to narrow down the top four. – Wow. I have no idea what we’ve done. (percussion beat) – Before we get to our biscuit finale, we wanna let you know that we have our own official Mythical Guess Who? game, available exclusively as our quarterly collectible item on the Mythical Society. I’m really good at this game, it takes a lot of strategy. – Yeah, it does. – [Stevie] Okay, guys, according to you, the top four biscuits in no particular order are Grands! Flaky Layers Butter Tastin’ biscuits, Annie’s organic flaky biscuits, Grands! Flaky Layers Buttermilk biscuits, and Great Value butter flavor flaky jumbo biscuits, but before you crown the best one, Rhett’s favorite flavor was Annie’s organic flaky biscuits and Link’s was Immaculate Baking Company organic flaky biscuits. – [Link] Literal honorable mention. – [Rhett] It didn’t make it to the top. – Well, sir. – So there’s a theme here. Flaky. – We like flaky. What? – Just grab the other half. – Oh, you want me to rip it? – Rip and then… – Rip and bite? I grew less and less fond of the butter flavor, as we went along. I’m still there. Now this one’s organic. – This one tastes like a real biscuit. This one’s better than that one, side by side. This is a big one. – Buttermilk. – There’s not a flakiness to this one, is there? It says flaky layers, but… – The thing about this one is that Annie’s doesn’t have that can taste. – It’s weird that it’s that good. This one’s not bad, though. Buttermilk’s better than Butter Tastin’. – Definitely. Definitely. And then finally, the really yellow, butter, who is this? Great Value. – You said that you thought that nobody beats Pillsbury, and I think that Annie’s and Great Value is both better than Pillsbury. – Their butter is better than the Butter Tastin’, that’s yours. It’s not as strong of a butter flavor. But yeah, I think you’re right. – And then this one is better than that. This one’s gone. Butter Tastin’s gone. – And then we’re putting this one… I think we’re putting this one third. It really comes down to these two. – I don’t disagree. I don’t disagree. – So let’s throw this at number three. – But this is not a competition in my mind. – Great Value flaky jumbo biscuits, coming in at number three for the butter variety. I call that an upset. A victory for Great Value. And then- – I don’t think this is close, man. – Pillsbury Grands! Flaky Layers, your eight big biscuits are going in the number two spot. – Wow. I can’t say I expected Annie to come through so strong, but officially, the best biscuit that you can get in a can, and is gonna receive the golden gravy, is Annie’s organic flaky biscuits! – What? – [Rhett] Nyoo… – [Link] Oh, look at that golden gravy. (confetti pops) Woo, that’s nice. – [Rhett] Don’t eat it. It’ll kill ya. The gravy, that is. – You’ve gilded it. That happened to somebody on Game of Thrones. – Yes, it did. No different. There you go. – Is that smell that? – No, it’s the poppers. – Oh, these. All right, well. Annie’s, you did it. We gilded you. – All right, thanks for subscribing and clicking that bell. – You know what time it is. – My name is Jeff from Orlando, Florida, but today, I am in North Carolina, and I’m gonna have Bojangles biscuits and sweet tea for the first time.
