GMMore 2644: How Well Do We Know Gaming Controllers?

Welcome to Good Mythical More. We are gonna walk ourselves through the history of game controllers. But first, we’re going to donate $1,000 to one of our charities. Link, this is an opportunity. I haven’t looked at it yet. This is either your charity. Inner-City Arts. Or Save the Children. Yep. This is your opportunity to get on the board. We are going to donate $1,000 to Save the Children. To aid in their mission to ensure their three global goals are met, no child should die from preventable causes, all children should have access to quality basic education, and no child should be a victim of violence. Please join us in giving at savethechildren.org/donate. It’s gonna happen, man. I promise you. It’s going to happen. All right. That, hold on, let’s talk about that archaeologist. Yeah, let’s do that. In Southern Iraq. And just this, this thing, he’s out there, he’s living the dream. It looked like a green screen. I know you think that we are living the dream It’s like pristine. We are, but he’s also living the dream. And he’s got the handkerchief around his neck and a hat. And he goes into that thing, right? He goes into it. He uses little brushes. And he just. And I admit, I probably don’t have the patience to do his job, but I do have the patience to, like, do it once. Visit for a day. Do it once, make a video. Yeah. Okay. Invitation accepted. Yeah. Well, this is, we know what this one is. A lot of these, we don’t know. This is a. This is what they call a DS? Wii. No, yeah, I don’t know what this is. Wee! This is a. DS? It’s the thing that the kids have. It’s, now. That with the, with the, with the controllers on the sides. Shepherd had this. Wait, you don’t know the name of this? DS? What? No, no, no, no. Nintendo, because look. You turn it into a knife. This one right here is a, Wii, I, we had this one. Wee! It’s right here. – Nintendo. -It’s very white. I see him with it. This is the, Wii. We had, we had this. Hold on, hold on, hold on. I bought it used off eBay and gave it to my kids for Christmas one year. It came with the Star Wars Lego game, which was awesome at the time. We played it. What is it called? Hold on, isn’t this just what the Wii is now? That’s what I thought, but it, they go on the side, it’s a portable thing. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Like the Game Boy. You can also hook it up to the TV. It’s very revolutionary. We had one on tour, but it didn’t work. What? Yeah, we had it on the tour. I always call it a Wii, and my kids always got mad at me. Oh, so you’ve been corrected. Many times. Well, so you should know what it’s called. Stevie. Starts with an S. Slope. Nintendo. – Super. – Sexy! Sexy game! Alright. Nintendo Switch! Switch! Because it switches up! Yes. Switch, switch, switch! You can switch it to be portable, you can switch it to be an at home game! You can do anything. And it’s definitely the newest. It definitely came after the Wii. The Wii is awesome. This is the oldest, old as hell. Sriracha gets that color when you leave it out for a long time. What’s he supposed to do, taste it? Just a little taste, but I was told that it was seven years old. And it’s so hot right now. Did y’all sit it outside? Has it been in someone’s car? Why is it, thanks. – Why is it so? – Why is it like, dented in? Did you lose it? It’s like losing itself and creating a vacuum. It probably is just fine, though. It’s sriracha. In all honesty, of all the things that they could have grabbed from the Mythical Kitchen, I feel like this is like, not the worst. Everything in there. Store in a cool, dry place. I’m trying to figure out if it. Everything in there doesn’t go bad. If it says best by. Yeah, right there. Best before December 2022. Oh, you’re totally good. Oh, that’s not seven years. Well, no, it’s just because it probably used. It says best by before. Yeah, true. Let’s see what, yeah. Well, I think it’s sealed. Oh, it is still sealed? You’re so good. You’re so good. Go for a spoonful. Oh, there it goes. We just let some modern day air in there. I don’t like it. Did you have a Wii? Yeah. I mean, my home had one. My children had one. Doesn’t look bad. You just don’t like sriracha. It just tastes like sriracha. That’s good. That’s good. That’s good. That’s good. I did. I don’t like sriracha. – I did a little bit of. – It doesn’t taste, it tastes a little more alcoholic than normal. I think it has fermented a little bit. I Wii bowled. Oh yeah, we bowled. And if you don’t put the thing around your arm, you’ll break a window. If you get aggressive. So we’re gonna put that over here, because that’s been a while. What’s this one that’s hiding right here? Let’s get it out here. Okay. What is this? I think that is a Nintendo 64. It’s, is it generic-ified? Yeah, we, we were trying to. And the reason I think that, is because, didn’t our, not suitemates, because we didn’t have suites in college. Our hallmates. They played, 007. They had GoldenEye on Nintendo 64. And I think I remember walking into that room and being handed a controller that looked like that and being very confused. Because it has. And being like, what? Like, there’s two things over here. And then there’s multiple buttons. It looks like cow udders. And then there’s buttons here. Can milk come out of it? Hold on, it’s got buttons there. The joystick in the middle. You think it had? If this is a Nintendo 64, you’d remember that joystick. I just remember that I didn’t know which one to use to move. And I think both of them worked. I don’t know what it is, we’ll find out, but we know that it’s, younger than the Switch. This is 20 years old at least, right? Now, that’s PlayStation. Let’s go with this. Yeah, this is, this is PlayStation. Bless you, son. And when did PlayStation happen, though? After Nintendo 64? And which PlayStation is this? Is this 5? 2? I think that’s the first PlayStation. I mean, I don’t know. So, it’s before the Wii. Oh, before the Wii, but I mean, yeah. Oh yeah, I did, I did, I did that wrong. – I forgot. – Right? I feel pretty confident thus far. I think the Wii is going to go somewhere over here. And then this is going to go somewhere here. Yeah, Nintendo 64. Right? Is that? Playstation. What about an Xbox? I remember when the Playstation came out. Sony’s making a? Sony! And people want it? They make TVs and cameras. What? But it makes sense. Oh, now this is, this is, this is weird. – Look at. – This is unfamiliar character. What is that? There’s a. Slot. There’s a hole in it. What is that for? A cartridge? So, this has all of the buttons that you see on the Nintendo 64, what we’re calling the Nintendo 64. I don’t know what that is. But this is a. This is some gaming system that, you know what, this might not even be a gaming system. This might be plug into your computer situation. When people started doing that. Well, what would go there? Like a? I think that’s how you hang it on your, hang it on a keychain holder. I don’t. No, it’s a slot that goes underneath and then that’s the window to see. The screen? So maybe. So you hold it like this? – You put the cartridge. – And look through it? You put the cartridge in the controller. Oh, really? And then, instead of having to walk to the, to the console. Oh, you might be right. And there’s a screen? A game? There’s a screen? No, it’s still on. I mean, it has a cord. Oh, it’s a cord. Yes? I think, because this connects to the computer, there’s no interface on the computer for these cartridges, so they’re, it just makes the controller heavy. That’s my theory. I think it’s somewhere between 64 and Playstation. Let’s try that. I want to save some time to find out what all these things are. So, let’s go through them. This one is purple. What is that? Start and pause is one button. Nobody knows. There’s an X and a Y. Are there triggers on that thing? Nobody knows what this is. There’s a joystick here and there. Yeah, this is. This is AI. This is just crap. Put it down there with the weird one. Do you think it, I don’t, but the colors of it. I think it’s more modern than the PlayStation. Okay. Alright, we know what this is. This is another PlayStation. Is that, that’s not an Xbox? Oh, is that Xbox? No, it’s exactly. No, it’s exactly the same thing as the PlayStation. Except it doesn’t have the. The two joysticks. Oh, so this is the early PlayStation. You’re right. Yep. And this might be what they do now. Move that over. This might be now. This might be the most recent controller in this whole thing. What the crap is this? This is like a gold plated dial. A number pad. This has got to be the earliest thing. Or the most recent. No. It’s like a retro thing. And then finally we have this one. This is really dumb. A dumb disc. Like, ergonomically, this makes absolutely no sense. This, I would say, that this is. Pretty old. Down there, maybe the second oldest one. So, move those over. Let me make room for one more. Okay, Stevie, let’s find out what these things are. You’re not, like, that off, to be honest. Yeah. Yeah, we know gaming. – Okay, we’ll start with the. – We know gaming. We’ll start with the Switch. That is the newest. It’s a Nintendo Switch Joy Con from March 2017. The two halves of the Joy Con can be used in coordination with one another, like a single controller. We know, we know how this thing works. I’m just telling you about the controllers. Don’t insult us by telling us how a Switch works. It is fascinating. We didn’t know what it was called. It could have been the Nintendo Slope, but they went with Switch and it’s cool. Alright, so. Next is the Wii, the Nintendo Wii Remote. Oh, nice. From November 2006. And I’m not going to tell you about it because you already know about it. It’s already old, it’s already old. Think about that. We still have it. And then. Mario Kart. You get off. Because the next one is the GameCube controller, which is that weird purpley. Oh yes, the GameCube! The Nintendo GameCube! And that was released in Japan in September of 2001, and then in North America in November of that year. Anybody have the GameCube? Oh, a few of them. It was supposed to mediate Nintendo thumb, a repetitive strain injury caused by the repeated thumb movements of excessive gaming. Okay. And that’s why it was designed that way. Nintendo thumb. Then we have, yeah, now it’s, now it’s getting right again. Because this is the PlayStation 2 DualShock 2 controller from March 2000. That is a perfect gaming controller, is it not? Right? Does it get, I mean, have they really improved upon this model at this point? Davin agrees. Davin agrees. Yeah. It featured motors within its handles that would vibrate the controller in response to on screen action. That’s cool. I had this one. This one I had. You had a PlayStation? What was your game? What was your game? I liked, Tony Hawk. Tony Hawk was the, yeah, that music would get stuck in your head. Stevie doing some 520s after school. Yeah, you’d go into the abandoned mall. You know, that’s fun. Okay, and then you met him. You know, also Mary-Kate and Ashley horseback riding. You could dress them up. Learning now. You could dress up. Why I liked to do that. Mary-Kate and Ashley or the horses? Mary-Kate and Ashley. And you would, you would do like the competitions? I didn’t get that far. – You just dressed them up. – Yeah. Well, how did you dress them up? Well, if I remember correctly, and I don’t know if it was Mary-Kate and Ashley or just Ashley. It must have been Mary-Kate and Ashley. How could it have just been an Ashley game? Because I think, from what I recall, she was the horseback rider. Ashley was, in real life. No, you could only dress them in, like, dressage wear. Okay. As far as I recall. Dressage? Equestrian wear. Yeah. Tall boots. Yeah. Baggy? But why are the pants so baggy in the thighs? For the horse’s sake. Carney, Carney has his hand on the microphone, I know it’s coming. No! This reminds me of the finale of Full House. When they were on the horse, and little Michelle Tanner got amnesia. Because she fell off the horse. And then it gave them both a chance to be in the show at the same time. Because they talked to each other in fantasy sequences. And this is what it reminds me of. Okay, I was not anticipating that! Fantasy sequences? Man. They talked to each other? That is true, everybody. I believe that. I believe that. So at that point, one of them was playing Michelle on a regular basis? They would swap out, it started because of child labor laws. I know everybody back here is disgusted by that. Yeah, child labor laws ruin everything. That’s how our staff feels. They’re all 12. Okay, well. That’s a nice little tidbit. You know what, earlier you were making farting noises when he opened the Sriracha, so I just, I wasn’t anticipating, his contribution. That was sophisticated. Yeah, and he’s balancing it out. What’s next? Next is the Dreamcast controller. Oh, it’s one of those. So, you’re a little wrong there. Sega! Weird one. From 1998. No, no, no. The one with the window. So what went in the window? I don’t believe anything. Just less mass. A memory card. Oh, really? Memory card. You know, Michelle Tanner lost her internal memory card when she got amnesia falling off that horse in the finale of Full House. It was quite a memorable episode. Did it allow for flashbacks over the course of the entire? I do think they went that route, yeah. If I remember. Yeah. Remember this? Oh yeah, because they tried to jog her memory. That’s what it was. Oh, wonderful. – It was a device to. – Wonderful device. Yep, to have a flashback and to bring in the sister. I love that. Simultaneously. Then we have the Sega Saturn 3D controller. This? Yeah? Sega Saturn? That must be it. That’s it. Yeah. Sega Saturn 3D. I was gonna say that felt very Sega-ish because it was black. And it had the three buttons across. It’s from 1996, the follow up to the Sega Genesis. This did not work. The Sega Genesis, I had that. And I believe it was revolutionary at the time. Sonic was incredible. Extra button. Sonic was awesome. It was great. Steven Spielberg. That’s the only thing I remember playing. Was the first, one of the first people to test the controller outside of the team that designed it and it was subsequently referred to as the Spielberg controller. He’s just like, I kind of like it. It’s like, I mean, it’s a little circular, but Why are you asking me? I’m a movie director. Just, I just want to be encouraging. Yeah, this thing is That’s weird. It’s, I mean, ergonomically, like. It’s a plate. Missing a lot of opportunity here. Yeah, how do you go, how, the little, joystick. The joystick’s up here. You gotta have a long thumb. Oh, you got no trouble. I think what they were thinking is, it’s the, it’s the first Sega that used a disc. Like a, like a CD-ROM. And they wanted you to think disc when you saw the controller. And then they, they kept that disc thing going. It’s like maybe you could store a disc inside of the controller. But not really. Then we have the Nintendo 64, which is the one, yep. We were right. Nintendo 64. That’s what they were doing over there. – Utters. – In that room. June, 1996. Follow up to the Super NES. It was very new to us. Cause it, June of 1996 is when we graduated from high school. And then we show up in September, 96. You were right. – Yeah. – Syme dorm, and they had it. They, I mean, they had it immediately. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And we were like, this is crazy. You, I never touched it. I’ve never touched this control. I never had. You never played it? I was so bad at it. I, N64 was what I remember as a kid being like the coolest thing. That game GoldenEye was incredible. I just was so bad at it that it just ruined, it just completely broke my spirit. I think that’s actually when I gave video games up. Because those guys were in there all the time playing it and they were so good at it. Yeah. And I was just like, I can’t do this anymore, let me go do something I’m good at. I know we have the last two right, right? We have to, Playstation. Well, the N64 was the first like, M shaped design cause they were trying to do something different and it was supposedly, you were, it was, you could hold it in three different positions, but it was controversial, because users couldn’t take advantage of all its functionality without changing their hands positions. Right. Then is the Playstation, that you have correct. That’s 94, and, oh, well, that was in Japan, it was 94, North America in 95. Thanks for clarifying. And this was an unprecedented second set of shoulder buttons that enabled players to use their middle finger to better navigate 3D environments. You know, it’s funny she says September 1995. Because Michelle rides again, the season finale. Nay, series finale. And it’s funny I said. – Nay. – Because there were horses involved, but that aired in May of 1995, just a couple of months before this remote came out. Wow. Great, great. Keep, keep putting that stuff in the episode. Wow. Wow. And finally, this is the Intellivision from 1979. Mattel Electronics. This is pre Atari? No. Yeah. Controller featured a 12 button numeric pad, four side buttons, two for right handed users, two for left handed users, and a directional pad capable of registering 16 different directions. Very phone like. Yeah, they hadn’t really thought about the possibilities yet. Pre Atari. Wow, that is cool. Thanks for that education. Nap time!
