Here’s how Disneyland invented the taco salad. So, when Disneyland first opened in 1955, damn near all the restaurants were sponsored by brands. You had the Carnation Ice Cream Parlor, the Chicken of the Sea Pirate Ship restaurant, the Coca-Cola refreshment corner, and Casa De Fritos. Now, at the time, Fritos was owned by snack industry titan, C.E. Doolin, who actually bought the Fritos recipe for $100 from a Mexican cook named Gustavo Olguin. Casa De Fritos was serving the basic Tex-Mex food of the 50s. You had enchiladas, tamales, and chili con carne but Doolin wanted something to set Casa De Fritos apart. So, he invented the tacup, short for taco in a cup. He created a special bowl shaped mold on a stick. I just use too many tart pans and some tongs, filled the masa in there, fried it until crispy, filled it with beans, ground beef, cheese, and all the fixings and thus, the modern taco salad was born. Also fun fact, Doritos were invented at Casa De Fritos just a few years later but, that’s a story for another time. I’d throw that up on the matter horn. I’d be happy about it.
