It’s the most wonderful time of the year in the Mythical Kitchen and we’re excited to be partnering with our friends at Kroger to help make some magic and turn today’s holidays into tomorrow’s memories. Today we’re welcoming a kid chef to help us create an exciting new holiday dish. But here’s the thing, they get to pick anything they want from our available ingredients to include in the dish. So will our holiday creation be a hit and become a new family tradition? Or will it be more of a messy memory from the kitchen? Let’s have some fun and find out. It’s time to meet our chef. My name is Jude. My name is Jody. Well, it’s a father-son relationship. I’m the father. He’s the son. Wow. Jude loves being in the kitchen. Anytime I’m cooking, he comes in. He wants to help. There’s sometimes I try to show him some things like knife skills and he wants to do it. He really wants to do it. So he gets going and I have to correct him. And Jude’s really, he’s– He gets slightly terrified. I do get terrified. Finally I have got to the point where I hand him the knife and just kind of watch. But, you know, he’s got really good senses about what goes together well. I like to put sweet and salty together. Like I’ve had these like wafers and chocolate, and they have salt on top and I ate one and I’m like, “oh my God.” I also like to put savory and sweet together and it’s always awesome. We’re a Jewish family who’s been Jewish for like a long time. As far as I can remember. He makes like Jewish dishes like matzo ball soup, latkes, which are always really good. My family owned a restaurant in Cleveland, Ohio, so I grew up, you know, my grandfather owned a restaurant, his grandfather owned a restaurant and my dad was part of that. And cooking was always a really important thing for us in the kitchen. So I try to carry that on with him and his sister. My favorite holiday traditions are making food on Hanukkah. We also celebrate Christmas in our household, so we do some Christmas dishes too. Today I’m most excited about getting to cook for him and getting to meet the chefs, Josh and Nicole, and seeing what we come up with. So I’m really excited for him to try it. And if he’ll like it or not. I’m excited to see him having fun and just cooking with Josh and Nicole. And I’m curious about what they’re gonna make up. It sounds really interesting. He’s terrified. Nicole, it’s gonna be a wild one. I’m really excited. I can hear, he is like a raging bull. Raging bull. Behind those doors. Jinx, you owe me a holiday recipe. Hurricane Jude’s coming. Ah. Jude is in the kitchen. Let’s go. What’s up? What’s up, man? Okay, are you excited to make the craziest, the wildest, the most memorable latkes of your dreams? Terrifyingly yes. Terrifyingly. Are you gonna make some decisions here that might be questionable? Yes. All right, Jude, you’re gonna have access to our pantry and you can choose up to 10 items of your own choice. You can go as crazy as you want. You can go as wild as you want to make your dream latkes. Sweet. We want you to hold nothing back. Nothing? Nothing. Craziest thing you can think of. We will execute it together, Jude, because we are a team. All right. Now secret team handshake. We have a handshake? Yeah, dude, we practiced this. Let’s wash the windows. It’s wipe, wipe, wipe. Slop, smolder. Jude, you’re not smoldering hard enough. Smolder harder, Jude. There it is. Okay Jude, are you ready to see what’s behind that curtain? Yeah. Let’s do it. Three, two, one. Whoa. Jude, here we have everything you could ever want to make the latkes of your dreams. We have every kind of potato imaginable. You wanna make a pineapple sauce? You know, I know you like the applesauce in the latkes. You look at this table over here, this is your table, Jude. This is the table we crafted just for you. This is the wild card table. We got habaneros. If you want to burn your dad on a spicy latke, we can make that happen today ’cause anything is fair game. All right, hurricane Jude, my little chef tornado, are you ready to get it in there? You’re gonna pick a couple different items from each shelf. All right. Okay, wheel of Gouda immediately in there, we do have some fresh wrapped Gouda, he’s grabbing all the cheese. Nice, nice. Cheese. Interesting choice for the latke. Cheese on a latke, all right. All right, we definitely need potatoes. Nice. Normal russett, a good choice. Am I trying this afterwards? Yeah. You and your dad are gonna eat it. Make holiday memories together and this is gonna be an awesome dish. Okay, let’s– So you’re directing us. You’re telling us what to do. You are our boss today. You should be scared. Right now on this table, we got some awesome ingredients. We got like this marshmallow cream, if we were doing a dessert latke. You wanna go savory with it? We got some smoked salmon. I like smoked salmon. I don’t think Jude will pick it but that would be a good one. Potato chips. Yeah, okay, potato chips. That’s gonna get fun. Habanero pepper. Definitely don’t eat that. That is a habanero pepper. One of the hotter peppers in the world. Don’t pick that, Jude. Don’t do it. He’s thinking about it. Put it in the basket. Do it, do it. You don’t have to. I’m gonna take a small one. It’s in the basket. We’re using it. I’m a scaredy cat. I’m gonna take this. Sounds good. But there’s a twist. Uh oh. I’m gonna put– Spinning his way through the kitchen. Reggiano and I’m not sure if this will taste good but this. Is that Dansk blue? Yeah. That’s Dansk blue. You’re a special Dansk blue recipient. Now you have to eat all the blue cheese, please. That sounds delicious. I like like that choice. Awesome. So we got candies. We got more potatoes in the bag. That’s– I’m gonna get carrots. That’s wild. They literally grow wild. That’s some chili lime salt. And that is really incredible. How do these taste on latkes? Let’s find out. Put it in your basket. We’ll use it. Jude, we’re going places nobody’s ever been. All right, Jude. So let’s start thinking about sauces. You like applesauce, right? Yes. Do you think we can do it? Mm hmm. Let’s try. How many do we need? I’d say grab like four. Grab four apples. That’s a good amount. I’m gonna grab five just in case. How many can you carry? Put some in your pockets. Yeah, yeah, that’s smart. Doesn’t fit. Nah, you’ve gotta jam it in there. Take a stapler on your way up. Start pocketing off the supplies. Okay, Jude, your basket looks pretty full to me. Let’s see what you got. Oh wow. That’s a lot of ingredients for latkes. Hey Jude, look at that cool apron. Thanks. Super into it. Jude, you got a big old shopping basket here. Yes. You ready to see what’s in? Let’s take some stock, all right. I noticed you went for the Yukon Gold potatoes. And russet. We got more potatoes. Wow, we do have a bunch of apples. So I think we’re gonna make a homemade applesauce, right? Definitely. We have garlic. Garlic. Okay cool. I think we can use this. You use matzo meal in your latkes, right? Yes. I also got sprinkles. The sprinkles. That’s awesome. Do not know where that’s gonna come in yet. We have blue cheese and– Parmigiano-Reggiano. I’m not Italian. He’s right. And what’s this? It’s Gouda. Smoked Gouda. Smells Gouda good. Smells Gouda good. And then chili lime seasoning. I got more Gouda. More Gouda. You can put it with the rest of the Gouda. And then carrots. Oh, and Gouda. Guess what, Jude? What if I told you these are two ingredients in one? We can use the actual carrots and maybe we can use the tops for something else. We could use that in like the sour cream. That’s a great idea. Smart, smart kid. And here’s the actual sour cream. Mm hmm. Ooh. Yeah, hold it by the stem. That way you don’t hurt yourself. Eat it. Why don’t you just eat it? Wait, wait, how much money are you giving me? This is a negotiation right now. 500. Wait, actually? No, we gotta save it for the latkes ’cause I have a plan for that. Dang it. Look at our bounty, guys. What are we gonna do with all these crazy, wacky ingredients? I have some ideas. Do you have ideas? I have ideas. What are your ideas? I say we stuff pockets of cheese. Smart. That’s why we got this. Smartest kid alive. Number one. Great idea. And then pockets of sour cream. And with these we can blend them up and we can make applesauce. Hear me out on this. What if we took the carrots and we use that in applesauce. Carrot and habanero is a really good combination. We can add that to the applesauce along with some of the chili lime powder. That sounds awesome. You liking that? It’s good. I think garlic and cheese is a good combination, right? Ooh, yeah. For sure. Garlic, potatoes, cheese, what’s not to love? We do like a cheesy garlicy potato latke. Use this instead of matzo meal to really thicken that up. Make sure it fries up nice these potato chips. I wasn’t even thinking about that. I think we got a great idea of what we’re doing. You ready to do this? Yeah. Jude– What are we gonna use the sprinkles for? We’ll find out. We’ll, you know, we’ll do some ideation a little bit later. Jude, we got a lot of work to do. All right. Are you ready? Yes. All right. Punch those potato chips, so don’t punch them. Okay, okay. That’s good. That’s good. That’s a good movement, yeah. Yeah, yeah, keep doing that. Keep doing that. Yeah, that’s good– Yeah, this is called the hammer fist. So right now we’re crushing up these potato chips, right? ‘Cause we’re gonna use that instead of matzo meal to really thicken up the latkes. We’re gonna dice up that Gouda and we’re gonna add some Gouda pockets in there. Yay, Gouda pockets was my nickname in high school. Wait what? What does it even… Don’t worry about it. A little chunky. And I’m really into it. There you go. So we’re gonna shred all these potatoes. We’ve got the Yukon Gold. We got the russet. Wow. We got the Irish red. Triple potato latkes. Yeah, you wanna start tossing potatoes in there? Yeah. Here, you start pressing that down. Yeah, you’re killing it. Perfect. Okay, let’s do some onion. I like adding my onion right to it, because then like you can’t have a latke without onion. You didn’t grab onion. But we went and got it off the shelf. Because you need onion in a latke. You do. All right. You need onion. And you need eggs. Yeah, I forgot. It’s like you’re detonating a bomb. Most latkes are made with russet potatoes. Russet potatoes are what’s called a starchy potato. That means… Jude’s not listening. That’s fine. I’m gonna talk to y’all. Russet potatoes are starchy potatoes, which means it’s going to turn to sugar really quickly. And so when you fry them, sometimes they have a tendency to kind of burn. And then you look at a Yukon Gold. This is called like a middle potato. And then we have Irish red, which are a waxy potato. Some people say it doesn’t fry well and it’s better for boiling. I really like frying waxy potatoes. I’d like to think that Jude is learning through immersion right now. Like when you play music for like a child in the womb. You know? All right, so let’s take this out. Whoa. You wanna dump all these shredded potatoes right into that bowl right there. Yeah, there you go. All right. So of course you’re gonna wrap it up and you’re gonna use all your strength to ring it out. Yeah, squeeze ,Jude. Oh, you got some loose potato here. Let me help you out. I’m sorry. That’s okay. I’ll hold the top and you squeeze, okay. Teamwork, I love it. Hey Josh, you wanna come give us the last final squeeze? No, you guys are kind of doing good. All right, fine, fine, fine. Just give us the last final squeeze. I’ll give you one, give you one. No, it’s gotta be like… There we go, there we go. Wow, that was a lot of juice in there. Yeah, twist it, Jude. Help me out, squeeze. Okay, okay, okay. Oh no. Oh no, it’s back in, wait. One last squeeze. One last squeeze, let’s go. One, two, three, last squeeze, last squeeze. Latkes are hard work. All right. That looks awesome. All right, Jude, before we kick this off, you’re a wild man in the kitchen. True. Safety goggles. We got habanero and you are our official crusher. The most important job in the kitchen ’cause you’re gonna crush those chocolate sprinkles with the chili lime powder in this mortar and pestle. You think you got that? Yeah. All right, cool. Now Nicole, can you dice me up some carrots? We’re gonna insert our carrot habanero, chili lime, applesauce. So many words. Yeah, yeah. Put some of that in. Yeah, crush that. Nicole’s chopping up some carrots for the sauce. Do you want this in chunks or like dices. Chunks is fine ’cause we’re gonna blend that all with the apples. And then we’re gonna pop it in a pan. We’re gonna cook it down. So I’m gonna take this habanero and very carefully slice it in half. Don’t eat it. Don’t touch it. Oh my God. Wanna touch it? Okay nope, mine. Okay, now we’re gonna toss that in the pan. So what we’re gonna do, this is called steeping. You’re gonna take the peppers in there and all the oils from these seeds inside are gonna steep into the sauce. Ooh, that’s good with the chili lime. Yeah? That’s awesome. I didn’t know how the chocolate was gonna factor into any of this, dude, so I’m glad. It’s like sweet and salty. That’s awesome. Do you like the sweet and salty combo? Yeah, yeah, hold on. I wanna try two. Can I have a tasting spoon, please? Always keep. Thanks. Jude, how many spoons do you have in your pocket right now? Zero. Mm, any good chef should have at least five spoons in their pocket. What’s ? Here, take some pocket spoons. Hmm. You can take those home with you. That’s just like Mexican candy. It does. Yum. Who would have thunk? I love that we’re going in this kind of Mexican direction right now. Hmm. This is awesome. All right, real quick. I’m gonna blend this up. Oh gosh, there it goes. I’m just gonna jam this down here. We have a little bit of water in there to get it started. So this is how you make your own homemade applesauce. You take apples, crush them in there. You ever have a carrot applesauce before? No, I haven’t. Me neither, not– Me neither. Are you excited for it? Yeah, I wanna try. You wanna try it? This is just carrot and apples right now. We haven’t seasoned it yet. Or cooked it. It was a big bite. That wasn’t a try. Is it good? Is it good? I’ll take that as a maybe. It’s not seasoned yet. So over here I got some blue cheese, some carrot tops, and a ton of sour cream. Look at that. That’s the sour cream? Yeah, it kind of looks like ranch. Doesn’t it? Are we gonna put this in there? No, we’re gonna add this to our applesauce. Yeah. All right, so I’m adding sugar in the chili lime to the carrot applesauce. Yeah, yeah. You stir it, come over here. Be careful, there is a habanero in there. We’re just gonna let it steep for a couple minutes, then we’re gonna pull it out. I think it’s called a– Oh, what is this? Apple. Nicole, carrot top, blue cheese, sour cream. Pretty fancy. Jude, latkes have never been this fire before. You ready to be the frierlater? Yeah. I’ve learned to cook by the assembly line. So Jude, your job, you’re gonna spray my hands with that non-stick spray. You gotta be strong. There it is, there we go. Okay, enough, enough, enough. Oh, you got a little bit on my pants. That’s fine. That’s good. Now I’m gonna take it and I’m gonna shape– It’s part of the process, buddy. I’m gonna shape the latkes– Buddy. And we’re gonna drop them in there. Oh, it’s a nice medium temperature. Nicole’s gonna take the spatula and kind of press it in a little bit. All right, spray. There it is. There it is, there it is. Now we rock and roll. We’re gonna do about four at a time. Something like that? We gotta keep the cheese pockets alive. Don’t die– Don’t burn them. Oh, spray, spray, spray. It’s important to have a good spray man in your corner. Go for it. This is perfect. Awesome. Oh, nice big latkes. All right, I’m gonna do a little flippy flip on some of these guys. Let’s see. Oh, pretty good. That’s good. That’s good. Caramelized cheese? Yes, please. Oh, that looks so good. It’s all your brainchild. These are ridonculous. All right, cool. We’re just gonna pull these. Can you go set the table? We got V and Trevor waiting for you. We got special tables set up. You’re gonna set the table for your dad. Then we’re gonna serve these up and pop over there. You ready? All right. Jude the dude. Jude the dude. My man. I mean, what can we even say about working with Jude? Like a raging bull. Like a raging bull. He’s like a tornado. A whirling dervish. Yeah, yeah. Just running his way through the kitchen and that energy is… That’s what you need in the kitchen. I was really eager to see him use the habanero. Same. Honestly. To see that heat used, you know, it takes a lot for a child to be able to do that kind of stuff and just be confident and just throw it in there. Oh yeah. And he was totally down. It’s a very non-traditional holiday dish, but I genuinely think that they’re gonna make that together. I think so, too. Cheesy latkes? Who doesn’t wanna make cheesy latkes? Like on a Tuesday, let alone on holidays. And I was really impressed with what we turned out actually. Oh, same. The dish is incredible. Also the curiosity that he has in the kitchen. That’s a huge part of it. And especially making a dish that’s very special to us. Of course, yeah. It’s important to us. And obviously important to him and his dad as well. Yeah. And I mean, I’m just really happy that we got to create this holiday memory for them. Well, today what I’ve made in the Mythical Kitchen for you are smokey garlic Parmesan latkes. Whoa. Ooh, big reveal. That looks amazing. They look gorgeous. So– I know. Okay, so these are obviously potatoes. What else did you do here? I put cheese in them. Cool. So what’s in here? That is sour cream, I believe… Oh, you got some cheese in there. Sour cream. That’s really good. Is there blue cheese in this? Probably had a cheese pocket. Cheese pocket, cheese pocket, cheese pocket. Oh. Yeah. That’s fantastic. So there’s blue cheese and the tops of carrots. So the green stuff. All right, what’s in this guy? This is carrot applesauce with apples, obviously. And what this is is chili lime and chocolate sprinkles. Chocolate sprinkles. And there’s a habanero pepper in there. That is a really beautiful color. I love that. So this has the habanero in it? This has the habanero. I’m scared. All right. Habanero apple carrot. Ooh, what a bite. Good? Very good. You gotta get in here. Okay. Wow. Oh, get in there, Jude. Yay, Jude’s trying it, perfect. The chocolate’s subtle so– He should be very proud of himself. Good workmanship from that kid. Ooh, we got the wide eyes. We got the wide eyes. That’s reaction I like. You made some awesome choices, Jude. This is fantastic. Yeah. Go, go, go. Hello. Hello. We’re back. What’s up? This was awesome. Are we loving it? It’s fantastic. That’s good. Jude, you crushed it. You should be so proud of yourself. You did a great job. You guys wanna try? Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Just one, just one. I’m not gonna deny that. I always go the applesauce on top of the sour cream. The habanero has a little kick to it. Mm hmm? The crunch on the edge of that latke is insane. It’s fantastic. That’s so good. The salt and the chili lime powder in there– Uh huh? That was you, you picked that out, man. Incredible. Never would’ve done this without you. The smokey garlic Parmesan latkes. Would you make this again next year? Is this gonna be added to your holiday tradition? I would 100% make this, yeah. Awesome. Can we get the recipe? Today was a lot of fun for me. I got to see Jude in his element in the kitchen and on camera, and I was really impressed with the ingredients you chose. I thought that it really came together well. Half of them I didn’t realize were gonna be turned into like what it would end up to be. It was so cool to pick out whatever I wanted. Like whatever. I got chocolate sprinkles. Yeah, how’d you get chocolate sprinkles in there? They just told me to grab something, so I did. I’m like, this may be good. Sweet and savory. It worked. It’s pretty exciting. So we’ll create our own new traditions. So on the holidays, try some new recipes and experiment with ingredients and I’m excited. Sounds good. I like making holidays into memories. I think that’s what holidays are about. Traditions and family and– Yeah, making them into memories. I’m proud of you, kid. You did good. Thanks. Today’s holidays are tomorrow’s memories.
